Terry Davenport is new to the job as Walkerville’s chief of police, but he takes his position seriously – even though very few things of note happen in the small hamlet. Walkerville may be boring, but Terry’s personal life is anything but.
When termites infest his house, Terry has no choice but to check into a local inn while his home is being tented. He chooses the Winchesters’ bed and breakfast, of course, and he’s hoping for good food and a modicum of entertainment from the young girls he loves so much.
Instead of relaxation, though, Terry finds himself in the thick of things when teenagers Bay, Clove and Thistle inform him that they’re sure some of the new guests at the inn are up to something nefarious. Terry thinks they’re jumping to the wrong conclusion, but he finds their endeavors to suss out the truth entertaining – even as Tillie Winchester eggs them on and makes things worse.
Unfortunately for Terry, it looks as if two scam artists are making their way to Walkerville and – surprise, surprise – the girls might be right after all. It’s up to Terry to find out the truth… and keep the people he cares about safe.
This is a short story set in the Wicked Witches of the Midwest world. It’s set back in time so it can be read at any point in the timeline.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
I loved this particular story because it didn't focus on the usual characters. I adore Bay, Thistle, and Clove, but it's nice to see another character's point of view, in this case, Chief Terry Davenport. Terry thinks they’re jumping to the wrong conclusion, but he finds their endeavors entertaining. Unfortunately for Terry, it looks as if two scam artists are making their way to Walkerville and – surprise, surprise – the girls might be right after all. It’s up to Terry to find out the truth … and keep the people he cares about safe. It was a cute story. The kind where you grab a hot cup of coffee, a comfortable couch, and just let the day drift away, page after page.
The town chief of police has a bit of an incident--as the mail man is delivering his mail he finds a hole in his deck with his foot. One incident rolls down the hill into more. Through the hole he discovers he has a termite infestation. The exterminator tells him he will need to find somewhere else to stay while his house is tented. He realizes all the inns in town will be full due to the Thanksgiving holiday. But one place might not--the inn run by three witches, or so the rumor goes.
This was a fun read. Lots of comedy and entertaining characters. The mystery was also a lot of fun. A great cozy read for the Thanksgiving season.
I love the Wicked Witches series, that is no secret! And I really love the Chief and the way he is more like a father to the girls than their real dads (I am gonna be pissed if he doesn't walk Bay down the isle/forest path whatever one day if Landon gets around to asking her), but the story itself was kinda flat. Not much mystery, not much investigating, not much of anything. I still gave the story 4 stars because of the special relationship that is highlighted in the book. Let's face it, the mystery here is just a setting for describing the place Terry has in these girls' live.
After rereading the book for a second time I moved my rating up to 5 stars, because this was never supposed to be a mystery story, I get that now and the final scene alone is worth ten stars and makes me wish I could draw. *sigh*
Winchesters to the rescue, just in time to save Thanksgiving!
The Winchester witches are up to their usual energetic family dynamic, helping Chief Terry find the bad guys and save the day! The family's - including Chief Terry, of course - bickering and absolute loyalty to each other both cracks me up and makes me a bit envious of the interaction and warmth underlying it all.. Well done Amanda!
LEE does tend to use the same voice with all of her characters.. but that's alright for most of her books. The three moms and the Aunt are memorable on their own. The girls are case study in insanity. Tried to read the series and some semblance of order you'll like it better.
I absolutely adored this story! I was thrilled when I saw that this would focus on Chief Terry, even though I did not expect that we would get an installment from his point of view. This really gave some more insight into his relationship with Bay and her cousins as well Marnie, Twila, Winnie, and even Aunt Tillie. I cannot wait for the next release!
Another great witches of the Midwest short. Love the characters and the story. I have enjoyed reading about the family adventures and interactions. It was nice hearing from Chief Terry, and it would be to read more about his past.
This was such a sweet book. it is told from chief Terry's point if view. you get to find out how he really feels about all the Winchester witches and find out what type if person he is.
You are transported to a simpler time in the past. Thistle, Bay, and Clove ate teenagers and getting into trouble as usual. Aunt Tillie is younger and you would never know she aged at all in the other books. The girls mothers are in the kitchen as usual fixing up lots if good for Chief Terry.
The girls are suspicious of a couple staying at the inn over Thanksgiving. Lucky for them Chief Terry ends being a guest after a untimely incident at his house. the four if them join forces to figure out what's going on and who is behind the mayhem.
Can they solve the mystery before Thanksgiving and manage not to ruin Thanksgiving day?

My rating system (* = star) 0* Could not finish this book (waste of time) 1* Finished the book but didn't like it. Two* Finished the book it was okay. 3* A good read worth your time. 4* An excellent read often with a novel concept or plot. 5* A great read. A prominent example of the genre.
I'm from the Midwest, and witches fascinate me. Thanksgiving is one of the holidays I enjoy, and after recently reading books about pilgrims, the first Thanksgiving, and Salem witch hunts, this title screamed at me. I'm glad it did. It was a pleasurable read to indulge in.
I liked experiencing the story from the POV of the bachelor sheriff. His views and voice gave a unique contrast to the overwhelming estrogen barely contained in the Winchester household. LOL I found his fatherly-uncle concerns endearing, as well. Though it would be lovely to see the author explore a relationship between Terry and Winnie, I appreciated the focus being on the relationship between Terry and the three teens, Bay in particular.
The mystery was well done. The teens involvement is great, but Tillie is hilarious. It's such a great premise.
I recommend this short. Readers who love paranormal cozy mysteries will want to check this out. I'll be looking into the rest of this author's catalog.
If you liked Nancy Drew as a teen, you will love this!
Take a small town, s single sheriff with termite trouble, and a b & b run by 3 generations of witches, and mix it up. What pops out is a wonderful story. With 3 teen witches looking for a mystery ( trouble ), and a sheriff who needs no help, so he thinks, in solving the search for a con man, you go from one family fight to another, the search in the middle of the night, and teenagers fighting over everything. It makes for a laugh out loud cover to cover read.
A cute short mystery with a great Aunt, 3 moms and 3 teenage daughters all living in the same house which happens to be a bed and breakfast. Chief of police, Terry has known these women for a long time and he has to spend a couple of nights at their Inn while his home is being treated for termites. The 3 teenage girls are full of sassy sarcasm and fight among themselves nonstop. THe moms and great Aunt are just as bad. lots of laugh out loud moments with this coven for sure. Thanksgiving in Michigan is going to be a hoot at their place. Look forward to reading this series.
Terry is now the new police chief of Walkerville, indicating this story is set a little in the past. He has a major termite problem at his house and will stay in the inn for a few days until that gets fixed. At the time Bay is 17 and already wants to be a reporter.
There's a couple of con artists that could be in the area. The three girls are suspicious of a couple staying there and none of the adults are listening to what they are saying. Things get more complicated at the end, too.
I love all of the books in the Short series. These books are on my top 10 all time favorite series, possibly in the top 5.
I recommended to my sister that she start with the shorts. You get to know all the characters and their back stories without the murder mystery element. There is a bit of suspense but no horror. Lots of fun, lots of laughs. Great stories.
This story is told from Chief Terry's perspective. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was funny. I enjoyed seeing the Winchesters from his point of view. The story and characters were intriguing. I look forward to reading more about these characters and their further adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.
The teenage Winchester girls, are almost as fun as the young adult Winchester ladies. This book kept me up all night tying to decide who was going to turn out to be the villain in this one! Margaret Little should definitely have had “yellow snow” in this book, however it was too early in the season for that.
This book is told by Chief Terry who actually partners with Aunt Tillie. But it goes through his relationships with a the nieces and the great nieces. There is plenty of humor, a mystery, some angst, and a criminal on the loose. Its right before Thanksgiving and the Inn is full, but who are the bad guys? Highly recommend.
The one thing I liked about this story is Terry's relationship with the girls is more evident. Especially with Bay! It would be great to see Winnie and him get together. He is more of a father to Bay than her own father.
Love reading about the Shenanigan that Aunt Tillie, and the stories involving Bay & Landon, Thistle & Marcus, and Clove & Sam and how they all make me laugh and cry through the books. Don't care how the narrator keeps changing.
I missed these guys and to have a story when girl's where teenagers was great and Chief Terry telling the story was different angle lived the snark and banter between Bay Thistle and Clove gave a different perspective of thier relationships with each other
The story was narrated by chief, Terry. He stays at the Winchester compound because this house is being tented, and he gets some long-term experience with the witches.
So glad the girls have Chief Terry in their lives. He is such an awesome father figure. Great writing, and awesome twist. Off to the next Winchester adventure.
