KEY News #3

Let Me Whisper in Your Ear

Rate this book
Reporter Laura Walsh's KEY News colleagues jokingly call her the "Angel of Death" because of her uncanny ability to have celebrities' obituaries ready to roll-even for people who are not expected to die. It seems someone's been "whispering" in Laura's ear, tipping her off to secrets about some of the rich and famous who don't have long to live.

When the remains of a 12-year old boy, missing for 30 years, are discovered buried where the legendary Palisades Amusement Park once stood, Laura sees her chance to move beyond the obits to "Hourglass," KEY News' answer to "60 Minutes." But when glamorous "Hourglass" host Gwyneth Gilpatric meets a devastating end, Laura's ready-to-air obit raises not only the suspicions of her co-workers, but of the police as well.

A tension-filled thriller from a rising star writer, Let Me Whisper in Your Ear is Mary Jane Clark's best book yet.

I wish I could give this more like 2.5 stars... But I can't give it 3. It was definitely not poorly written, but I felt like there was very little character development - maybe because there was SO many characters. I enjoyed the story line; I think it was perfect for this genre. However, the conclusion was so rapid that I didn't feel like I had enough time to comprehend what happened or even WHY it happened - and I feel like the "why" is so important to the murder mystery genre, at least for me. Surprising, yes. Page-turner, yes. But fantastic? Nope.

I am so enjoying this author's books....so suspenseful with a fast moving plot as well as subplots. I really like the informative tidbits she includes about places and historical items. Real page-turners that are hard to put down. High on my list of favorite writers.

I love suspense books. It's just getting harder and harder to find one with good suspense. Unfortunately, this is another one of those that has good promise, but doesn't deliver.

However, you'll keep reading just to find out what really happened to the missing kid and how Laura's father was involved. But in the end, neither the killer nor the missing kid story line carries much umph.

There were quite a few typos in this book which surprised me since it was published by St. Martins Press. That's not something I hold against the author. That's the editor's mistake. Maybe if Mary Lane Clark hadn't been the daughter-in-law to Mary Higgins Clark the editors might have taken a bit more care with her book. But when you know you're going to have a bestseller based on family, why bother when you have a ton of other books to edit?

This was my first Key News thriller. I might try another only because I like Ms. Clark's Piper Donovan mysteries. Hopefully the next Key News thriller I read actually is more thrilling.

For those interested, this is a very quick read with short chapters. There is also very little cursing and no sexual content.

Rating: 5 Stars!!
Review:
This was only the 3rd Novel ive read by Mary Jane Clark so i kind of knew what to expect but i really liked this one since the setting surrounding the story was completely different from other mysteries ive read about.

The Characters were interesting to read about. I couldnt pick just one as my favorite since i seemed to like all of them despite the not so smart decisions each of them made.

The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like i was actually in the book while reading especially the Rollercoaster scene.

Overall a Wonderful Edge of your seat Mystery. Can't wait to read more by Mary Jane in the future!!

Once again, Mary Jane Clark delivered. This is the fourth book I've read and for the fourth time, I wasn't disappointed. Clark adapted the multiple suspects formula and the way she connected the characters relationship with each other was really effective.

From her other works I've read so far, the heroine in this book was different because she wasn't a broadcast reporter but a back office producer. Her writing obituaries even before the person has died was really fascinating and creepy at the same time. With her stories and heroines, Clark gives us an idea of what goes behind the glamorous facades in a broadcast media network. Bosses were really heartless bastards who only care about the ratings. Sometimes one can't draw the line being a professional or a human.

There were a lot of characters involved, subplots, multiple murders and mysteries to be solved and it all boiled down to a great story with no loose ends.

First of all this is not entirely a murder mystery. This started off as a very interesting story. Very intertwined, and at one point I thought that very one is a killer, it was that good. The story consists of about 100+ chapters, each one a few pages long, and that is how I like it. It reminded me of Richard Osman's "The Thursday Murder Club", as far as the format is concerned. Small, beautiful chapters.
The writing style of the author is too good if you ask me, there is this chapter in which Mathew ( of the characters ) is ranting about valium addiction. The chapter is so beautifully constructed, the build up and the end, so amazing. I can't just get it out of my head.

The ending kinda sucks. It had a potential to be a much more then the author let it. The illusion of a very dark secret that the story gives at the beginning is just an illusion after all. All the downsides aside I loved a few chapters like I said, they talk about human nature, and the writing style in them is just marvelous.

Mary Jane Clark's writing style is very similar to that of (her former MIL) Mary Higgins Clark, so if you like one, you'll probably like the other. This is a pretty standard formula murder mystery with a small touch of romance, offering both a present-day killer to be unmasked as well as a 30-year-old cold case that becomes news again. The number of characters keeps the reader guessing all the way through, but a cheesy and sanctimonious ending had me rolling my eyes. I would actually rate this 2.5 stars, but I just couldn't give it a 3 because of that ending.

I'm a very big fan of Mary Higgins Clark, so when I found a book by her former daughter-in-law I decided to give her a chance. I went into the story thinking it was going to be a good murder mystery but I never even got to the actual murder because it was so bland. No I do not want to hear about Laura Walsh's life story! It would've saved a lot of time if they revealed it little by little. I want to hear about the mystery not the characters daily routines! I don't recommend. If you want a better mystery look elsewhere. 😫🤦🏼‍♀️👎🏻

Memories of my childhood came back to me while reading this story. I only remember going to Palisades Park once, but I still know the feeling I had when my Dad said he'd go on the roller-coaster with me. Not the Cyclone, but the next size down. I was only a little kid then and was SO thrilled that I was able to ride that coaster!! I don't think he was thrilled, though, lol.
Vivid descriptions of the park throughout this book, coupled with memories of Cliffside Park and NYC, made this an enjoyable read!!

The main characters in these books work at a news station. You do not have to read these in order to understand the characters which I like. I can never remember which is the next book if I'm reading a series so I appreciate being able to pick up on it right away. And she was/is a news correspondent so it reads as if your there. I like more of a romance in the mysteries I read but even without it she writes well. I would recommend her books.

These little mysteries are always fun to read. The ending is not very satisfying, but the process of getting there is fun. This one was about a KEY News star who gets pushed off a balcony. The heroine is a young news producer named Laura Walsh. There's also an old mystery about a roller coaster. It didn't all tie together too well at the end, but these mysteries are more about the journey.

This was a great thriller and Mary Jane Clark did not disappoint. It was a great page-turner! I had no idea who the killer was. I enjoyed the intricate connection between the characters. Loved the short chapters too!

Similar to Mary Higgins Clark - rich famous people with their problems in huge apartments and with huge bank accounts. But basically quick read, relaxing. And I had fun with the way author misspelled "oplatek" and repeated it so many times.

Let me first say that I read this book not knowing it was a part of a series and it worked out just fine! It was a great book, and I really didn’t care that it was the third book! You can read this book on its own and it’s still amazing!

Well written book. The plot was well devised and the supporting characters were all interesting, even if the main protagonist was a little dull. Would read other books by this author, but I'm not running out to the store for them.

I love the short chapter format and enjoy the unique setting of intrigue in the setting of a major media conglomerate. Yet I wish there was more emotional depth to the character development.

Very good as this author's books always are. Edge of the seat. I didn't figure out who done it until Clark wanted me to and only a little bit before the heroine did.
