Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, the One Piece.
As a child, Monkey D. Luffy dreamed of becoming King of the Pirates. But his life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, an enchanted Devil Fruit that gave him the ability to stretch like rubber. Its only drawback? He’ll never be able to swim again—a serious handicap for an aspiring sea dog! Years later, Luffy sets off on his quest to find the “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
Luffy’s brother, the infamous pirate Portgaz D. Ace, is being held at Impel Down prison…and he’s scheduled for the chopping block! While breaking into the daunting underwater dungeon to rescue his next of kin, Luffy encounters former enemy Buggy the Clown and the toxically terrible Warden Magellan. Before long, what started as a prison break turns into all-out war with the World Government!
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

These volumes follow Luffy’s continuing quest to save his brother, Ace, from execution. As such, it finishes up his adventures in Impel Down prison and drops him – and his whole new set of allies (some of them on the questionable side) – into the middle of the paramount war between the navy and the Whitebeard Pirates.
We continue to get a lot of wholesome interaction between Bon Clay and Luffy, as well as the introduction of a whole new set of queer characters! Because, inside the hellish place that is Impel Down, there is a refuge created by and for gender-queer people (complete with restaurant/cabaret) called New Kama Land - or “New trans land” in the anime subtitles. (I had to wonder if calling this “level 5.5” had some “platform 9 ¾” influence? If so…that is retroactively AMAZING). The leader of this group Iva - born Emporio Ivankov - is a revolutionary with a Rocky Horror inspired character design and hormone powers! (Note: Iva uses a 1st person neo-pronoun, “vatashi”, in the original Japanese, so I will be using xe/xir here, and “they” for Bon Clay and Inazuma to reflect those language choices and their self-descriptions, rather than “he”). We get two brief updates on Sanji in the Kamabaka Queendom in the form of chapter header illustrations. There’s also probably the only instance I’ll ever applaud of an author breaking the fourth wall to signal that a “death scene” is a fake out while also milking it for emotion – specifically because of it fitting under…Queerness in ‘One Piece’, part 3!
(BTW, it cracks me up that this series has furries – not humans with animal ears, or humanoid animals, thought those ALSO exist in the ‘One Piece’ world, but actual humans dressed like animals – and THIS is where we find them! No cat-girls, surprisingly…but between this and the later introduction of Carrot, I think Oda might just prefer rabbits)
Anyway, discussion inside spoiler tag:
Having found out that Luffy is the son of a revolutionary comrade (and presuming Ace is too), Iva and Inazuma move up their breakout plan to help him. They make their way down to the lowest, most secure level…to find that Ace has already been moved! However, there they find two more unexpected allies: Guards: “All the prisoners who disappeared are back! And look what they’re wearing! They’re unstoppable! And they’re dressed to kill!!”
Once the escapees get hold of a navy ship, they head for Marinefort, where Ace’s execution is scheduled to take place. The marines are already bracing for an attack by the pirate fleet associated with Whitebeard, who is Ace’s adoptive father figure. However, head admiral Sengoku reveals that Ace’s biological father – and the REAL reason he has to die – is Throughout these preparations, Sengoku has clearly been trying to keep an eye on vice-admiral Garp, because
The Paramount War is utter madness, so for now I’ll just share my two favorite moments from vol 57: 1) Mihawk regarding Luffy: “It’s not his powers or technique. He possesses some quality that makes people want to help him. And in these waters, that is the most formidable power of all!” Yep. Sounds about right! 2) Admiral Sengoku: All right, cut the cameras. The world doesn’t need to see what we’re about to do. We’ll just tell them we won later. Buggy: (Starts livestreaming the war from a stolen transponder snail) Sengoku: WHAT IS THAT LITERAL CLOWN DOING?!! (paraphrase)

I don’t care how long the story is and that there will be more to the story and the plots, but still Ace doesn’t deserve all this Eiichiro Oda, you are the writer yes, but why did you write his story like this😭
* the rating doesn’t matter anymore this is the cause of pain🥰
Absolutely obsessed with this story! This author is brilliant and I cannot believe how this story is coming together. Binged this over the weekend and had to start the next one immediately. Would recommend everyone reads
With the escape of the prison behind them we see Luffy and his friends jump into the major war. I really liked the plot twists revealed in this arc. They make certain characters way more important and gives us more good reasons why this war is being fought at all. The amount of characters in just these volumes are incredible, I don't know how Oda keeps track of all of them.
Estoy volando leyendo estos arcos. Impel down fue increíble y este de marine ford es épico. Se abren mucho el mundo y lo lleno que está de gente muy poderosa.
Damn... this has been a ride. This saga is getting better and better. It got me fucking emotional. And I love it. One Piece should do that more often.
Anyway, Impel Down was great. I loved getting to see the characters from the past sagas and arcs. And also the new characters. They were really cool. Especially the Ivankov guy or whatever his name was (for spoilery part read the second part of the review).
Marineford though... it's amazing. Great. Unbelievable. I loved every second of it. Also I love Ace so I may be biased.
Overall, these were some great volumes. Despite Impel Down not being the strongest arc in the manga so far, I can easily give these volumes 5 stars if only because Marineford is that good.
As mentioned, there will be SPOILERS from here on.
So... to start with Impel Down and its characters. Of course, we have Bon Clay who is so amazing. I hope he's not dead but his sacrifice was so sad. Like... he stayed behind so that Luffy could save Ace. I just love this man... even if he did try to kill the crew in the past. I love how he helps Luffy just because they're friends and how he stayed with Luffy when he was poisoned.
Anyway, Mr. 3 and Buggy are hilarious here. Like... they're trying to run but they're too dumb to do anything significant and just get caught every time. I love their stupidity. Also everyone worshipping Buggy as if he were actually a good pirate is hilarious. And I love it.
Then we have Ivankov or whatever his name is. First I just wanna say that I love his design. And his head getting bigger with hormones is just very funny. I don't the man's just really cool and I love his eccentric personality and his will to help Luffy.
Then we have our boy Crocodile and I must say that I love how chill this man is. For some reason his calmness is just needed here because we have so many characters with eccentric personalities that we need one of them not to scream every two lines he has. Also his giving off hard Scar energy and I love it. I really like the moment when he doesn't take Doflamingo's offer and he fights him. The line "You damned flamingo" will always be in my heart. And my head cannon is that Crocodile is still one of the warlords and not Teach so do with that what you will.
I didn't expect Jimbei to be one of the best characters in this arc but he totally is. I love that he gives off mentor vibes and is a voice of reason (like when he stops Luffy from fighting Teach). His fish abilities are also really cool and I love how he helps Luffy and the others with them.
And of course we have our boy Luffy. Man... he's just getting better in every arc he's in. His will to save Ace even if he dies while doing it is just amazing and cute. I mean... he literally could have died because of that poison and was barely saved by Ivankov and Bon Clay. His entrance with the ship falling from the sky is just amazing. I love it. Probably my favorite moment in these 3 volumes. I love how Luffy is basically competing with Whitebeard who will be the one to save Ace. His attitude is just amazing.
Then, of course, we have my boii Ace. I should begin with mentioning that he is one of the hottest characters in One Piece. Now that this is out of the way we can talk about the real shit. Aka emotional trauma that this man gives me. The flashbacks are amazing and I just love my man being sad and on the verge of crying. And the way he calls Whitebeard his father even though his real father is Roger... chills. I like that everyone is trying to save him (because Ace is just that awesome) and the way he doesn't want Luffy to interfere because he wants him to be safe... wholesome as heck.
Lastly, I wanna briefly talk about Whitebeard because he's really cool. Like... he knows that Luffy is important to Ace so he orders Marco not to let him die. How cool is that? I just hope he doesn't die because some random dude stabbed him...
I'm really enjoying Luffy's quest to rescue his brother Ace. It's fun to see his adventures apart from the other Straw Hats, and I like the strange alliances that are forming along the way, with new characters such as Iva, as well as old characters such as Mr. 2 Bon Clay.
Still, I'm torn between simply enjoying this story and being upset by the casual sexism on display. I hate how simplistically gender is portrayed in this manga, with characters losing all of their muscle mass the moment they are turned into women (as well as Oda changing the Straw Hats' personalities in the SBS corner, saying that Luffy would eat salad rather than meat if he weren't a man).
Surprisingly, the queer representation we've seen so far (and in this volume especially) isn't awful, since both Iva and Bon are portrayed as formidable allies with as much care given to their stories as the non-explicitly queer characters. Any trouble with these characters' portrayal stems from sexism, which makes sense given the lack of romantic or sexual relationships in this series. If there is any aspect of a queer character to be mocked or teased, it is their gender presentation (specifically their femininity) that gets put on the chopping block. I dislike this trend, but it's not enough to completely ruin the series for me. I hope that the writing becomes more mature in this respect as the story continues.
Series: One Piece #55-57 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
This volume continues the escape from Impel Down and begins the battle at Marineford to save Ace. Luffy fights Magellan and is badly poisoned but is saved by Emporia Ivankov. I forgot how much I liked Ivankov. Luffy turns a lot of old enemies into allies as he escapes Impel Down. I am always surprised by how easily he can turn enemies into friends.
Once they escape from Impel Down they head to Marineford where the battle has already started. The Navy announced the true identity of Ace's father and why the Navy is so determined to execute him. We finally get to see Whitebeard's deadly ability in action. Unfortunately Whitebeard is betrayed by one of his own. So much has happened in these three volumes!
Not sure how, but Ive managed to avoid being spoiled for the series as a whole. (There's a few spoilers I wasn't able to avoid, but overall, I'm coming at this fresh.)
And wow! Some of the twists and turns of story are mind-boggling. The way they layer additional information about the world, the plot and the characters is just masterful, like it was there under the surface the whole time.
However, even after the events of this volume, Luffy still remains my least favorite of the Straw Hats....
Whitebeard is amazing. The arcs have been fire and the action is nonstop. Things keep escalating and I can tell things will only go crazier. This is giving me Avengers Endgame vibes
Another awesome and exciting volume of one piece, everything about one piece is so perfect! The story is so awesome and has the best art and lots of awesome characters 😻😻👌⛵️🏴☠️
