Cowgirl Kate and her talking horse Cocoa are featured in several Level 2 Readers. I especially love the fact that Kate and Cocoa have conversations. When Cocoa runs after the school bus, Kate can have a talk with him about staying home to wait for her return. When she paints his portrait, he gives her constructive criticism. A play date with a friend causes Cocoa to doubt his place in Kate's heart. Finally, when Kate is doing a report on horses, Cocoa helps by giving visual cues on what horses can do. These books are perfect for kids who (like me) are horse crazy. My family had a pasture full of horses and ponies on our farm when I was a kid. I wish they would have been able to talk to me like Cocoa!

Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa - the Roarbots
A fun little book with vivid illustrations doing justice to the story and even more bringing characters to life! I was fascinated by horses as a preschool kid - they are certainly one of the most beautiful and noble creatures in the world - and would certainly love a horse being my friend. Moreover, a talking horse! And on top of this with a name Cocoa, which I instantly loved!
Thank you, Darla , so much for bringing this series to my attention! I've started from this one as well because the library only has them from the book 3 to 6! I think that these stories would be a fun way for kids to learn English as a second language.

P.S. The original art from the last page of Horse in the House, signed to Zoey from Betsy Lewin for her third birthday

A book my 6 yr old loved, a little old for my preschoolers. A solid reading level 3 book, this reader has a good amount of advanced vocabulary words, but not so long that it discourages a new reader. Used it for his read out loud book, which was perfect. It took about 20 mins for him to read and had just enough new vocabulary words to make it challenging. Also, it was a fun and interesting story he could get into. He liked it so much, he asked for more by this author. Great reading book!

Silverman, Erica Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa: School Days 43 p. Harcourt, Inc.

In the first chapter, much to her horse Cocoa's dismay, Cowgirl Kate leaves him to go to school. He follows the bus like Mary's little lamb until the driver stops and sends Cowgirl Kate back home with her horse. Next, Cocoa feels their friendship is threatened when Cowgirl Kate brings a friend home from school, but he soon realizes she is his friend too. Cocoa poses for a painting in one chapter and helps Cowgirl Kate with her report on horses in another.

The delightful watercolor illustrations and bright colors against the white background make this a very inviting chapter book for beginning readers. The characters are believable and their friendship shines through in each story. This series would definitely find an audience in elementary school.

Grades K-2 - ESSENTIAL (If not the whole series, at least a sampling) . Reviewer: Debbie Herget, Elementary Library-Teacher

This was a really cute book. However, I found the illustrations much more captivating than the actual writing. The writing seemed very basic and repetitive for a book formatted like a little chapter book. I understand that that kind of writing can be good for developing reading skills, but it just seemed like a book that would be a bit higher level of reading.
That being said, the illustrations make up for any complaints I have about the writing. They’re very well done, with beautiful colors and lots of personality. I will definitely be looking for the other books in this series!

Yee-haw! Cowgirl Kate and her loyal cowhorse, Cocoa, are back for more boot-stompin' fun. Only problem is, school's in session and horses are not allowed. Poor Cocoa feels left behind, but not for long. These plucky pals always find a way to stay best friends. This newly formatted Green Light Readers edition features two short stories that are well paced for beginners.

This is a small and cute version of a very basic chapter book telling small stories about Kate and her horse Cocoa, who gets very jealous and loves to have his friend's attention. Of course real horses don't talk the way Cocoa does, but that doesn't mean that they don't like to do the other things illustrated in these stories.

Cocoa misses Cowgirl Kate when she's away at school! He has to learn to handle jealousy and loneliness in this very clear, simple set of stories about our favorite cowgirl and her favorite horse. Might be a good one to read with a kiddo preparing to start school.

Definitely on the easier side of the spectrum. More of an EZR than an easy chapter book. Horse lovers should enjoy.

My child enjoyed this book, and it was a good early chapter book read, but I thought some of the characters’ behaviors weren’t kind.

This book would be good for kids just starting to get into chapter books. It has small chapters and only a couple sentences on each page making it a good transition book. I would not use this book to base any lesson off of though because it doesn't have any concept.

When the seasons change and fall comes around, it's time for Kate to go to school. Cocoa isn't too thrilled with the fact, as the four short, easy-to-read chapters of the book show.

In MARY'S LAMB, Cocoa is determined to follow Kate and her school bus all the way to school, until he realizes that the faster she gets there, the quicker she'll return back home.

With THE PORTRAIT, Cocoa helps Kate with her homework assignment, which involves painting a picture.

A NEW FRIEND introduces Kate's schoolmate, Jenny, who Cocoa is determined not to like, until Kate reassures her best friend that nothing will ever take the place of her horse.

In A REPORT, Kate and Cocoa both realize that Cocoa is the best one to help with a school report on horses!

The COWGIRL KATE AND COCOA series is great for beginning readers, or for a quick and fun read before bed. This one is no exception, and the lessons learned in the story are ones that everyone can relate to.

Includes two stories from the original Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa School Days collection. In "A New Friend," Cocoa the horse is jealous when Kate brings home a new pal, but Kate shows Cocoa that she will always love him best. In "A Report," Cocoa wants Kate to play with him, but she has to write a report for school. Good thing her report is on horses, so Cocoa can help her with it.

Both of the stories deal with topics many students will encounter in their lives: friendship, jealousy, and balancing homework with play time. The equine-centric tales, with their colorful illustrations, will likely appeal to many horse lovers. Because this is a reprint, librarians and teachers may want to check their collections before adding this book, in order to avoid unintentional duplicates.

It's fall for Cowgirl Kate and her horse Cocoa which means that Kate is off to school. Cocoa doesn't deal well with the changes school brings - Kate being gone during the day, making a new friend, and having homework - but soon he adjusts. Betsy Lewin in her watercolor illustrations gets the opportunity to give Kate some different clothes for the first time although the snazzy red cowboy boots from previous series entries still make an appearance. With each entry it becomes clearer that Cocoa is really the star of these stories with Kate as his straight man.

As my daughter learned to read, I found these books as some early readers. I liked how Cowgirl Kate and her horse Cocoa interact. Cocoa is like a big puppy, or maybe more like a toddler. He pouts, complains, insists on his own way, etc.

The language is 2nd reading level, so it is a good one to read to your 1st reading level children or to have your 2nd reading level children to read to you. I think that's what I like best about it. It is at a level that she can read on her own, and yet it is interesting and cute enough for her to enjoy it.

Cowgirl Kate and her horse (and best friend), Cocoa, face the tribulations of separation, school assignments, and (gasp!) a new friend in this third outing of the early reader series. The very personified Cocoa (he gets jealous and likes to play tag) and his sometimes exasperated caretaker will entertain early chapter book readers with their antics and short dialogue. Betsy Lewin's ink and watercolor illustrations give the book an old-fashioned, timeless feel.

It is Fall and time for Kate to head back to school, but Cocoa isn't thrilled about that. He busts out of his fence the day that Kate goes to school and chases it all the way to school. Kate tells Cocoa that others are making fun of him, calling him Mary's Little Lamb from the nursery rhyme. That's enough to make him run home! In this 4 short chapter book, we find Cocoa getting jealous of Kate's new friend and also Cocoa helping Kate out with a report!

The third book in the series is as refreshing as the first two books. I love the consistency in the humor and brief chapters that move the story along so nicely. In School Days, Kate and Cocoa work through separation anxiety and jealousy.

My daughter liked the book, because she could relate to it. She has been taking horse lessons for couple months and reading this book helped her remember good times she had with her horse Ginger and Hendrix.

My horse loving five year old daughter loves having this series read to her. It would be a perfect picture book for a late 1st grade or early 2nd grade reader who is transitioning over to chapter books.
