A puzzle with many pieces and a story for all. Action, friendship, betrayal, love, and responsibility all are huge aspects of this book.

When Tori has to investigate the murder of a friend along with her partner she has no idea how hard this is really going to be. She is having trouble already with losing her brother, who had faith in God, to cancer. She's made him promises that she is following through on but they aren't easy.

When she meets Cole Jeffers a friend of the family she hadn't met yet the night Nathan's murdered she is having trouble reconciling that with her friend Sally. She has more trouble when it's made clear he has a very good relationship with the family.

Tori's partner Max is sick and he is being unbearably rude and aggressive toward the Moore family and to Cole and it not only an embarrassment but it isn't who he is.

When they all join forces and find out things none of them knew before this becomes a very difficult puzzle to solve and it looks more and more like Sally has the most motive.

Will they be able to solve this murder? Will it end a friendship started in college? Will Tori go further in her relationship with God?

Solid suspense novel. I loved that new details kept unfolding to keep me adjusting my point of view on who might be the villain in the story. I wasn't crazy about how Nathan was portrayed. Love the cover!

A suspicious murder leads to a complex investigation, baffling both the FBI agents and US Marshal on the case, who are personally involved with the victim's family. The deeper they dig, the more dangerous it becomes, and the truth eludes them as everyone seems to be hiding something.

This author knows how to work a police drama very well, leaving more questions than answers as it goes on, with the suspense building up. The human drama side of the story was interesting, dealing with betrayal, bitterness, grief and fear. Faith enters to bring hope to a few characters, while others choose to hang onto greed and revenge. A little romance adds a tender side to the story, including a marriage in need of renewal, and a friendship growing into something more.

Fans of police-type dramas with action and suspense will enjoy this. Some mature subject matter included; probably better for adult readers. 4.5 stars

Of all the suspense authors I read, DiAnn Mills is the one I have most likely read the least of. I guess I just discovered her later.

This is the second book in the FBI Task Force Series, and the author pulled out all of the stops on this one. I like her writing style anyway, but she just seemed to outdo herself on this one. There was nothing to dislike on this one, and I didn't want to put it down. I started it on my lunch break at work, read some more on my second break, and finished the book when I got home.... and it is just 4 pages shy of 400 pages.

What I liked:

The plot. Some plots are so simple, you can see the guilty party and outcome a mile away. Others are so intricate you get lost. This one was intricate enough that I was kept guessing as to what was going to happen next, and who was guilty, yet not so complicated I got lost. It was never ending suspense and drama.

The characters: I liked the two main characters, and enjoyed the interaction between them. I also liked the family of the murdered man and was drawn into their tragedy as they mourned a man that wasn't who they thought he was.

The Christian content: I have read Christian books where the conversion of a main character seemed contrived and just done to wrap up the book. In this book, Tori struggles with faith in God because of losing her brother who was a Christian to cancer. I thought that sub-plot added a lot to the book, and was not resolved in a contrived or last minute thing.

The romance: I am not big on romance, but don't mind some in a book like this....and I actually enjoyed that part also.

What I didn't like: Well, nothing. This was truly an amazing, suspenseful read that can be held up as an example of what good Christian suspense should be. After I finished this book, I even ordered a book by this author I had not read.

Deep Extraction was a very detailed and gripping thriller that was hard to put down for any length of time. We have a family tragedy that from the outside looks like an accident, but digging deeper the facts are coming out and suggesting murder. In steps Cole Jeffers, a US Marshall, and Tori Templeton, FBI, who both happen to be very close friends to the murder victim, Nathan Moore and his family. Those two had yet to meet, they are now meeting for the first time as a team to clear this family’s name and uncover the real culprits.

This story was definitely an emotional one as this family is not only dealing with the death of their husband/father but finding out that he was not always who they thought he was. I felt for his wife, Sally and their two teenage sons as the outside trappings of their father was peeled away and they must come face to face for the first time with the type of man he was. And they really had no way to confront him on this side of heaven to get some closure for what he did and to try to restore the relationships.

I enjoyed watching the sparks fly between Cole and Tori, at first due to distrust, then later attraction. They made a great team together, not only their banter but the fact that they had each other’s backs too. I thought this novel had just the right pacing; short enough chapters to keep us on our toes and wanting more and yet gave us time to catch our breath. This was a rather complex mystery with a lot of moving parts that the team really had to dig through, even while more victims were piling up and they were fighting for their lives as well.

This was a well done romantic suspense and I think my favorite so far by author Mills.

I was provided with a copy of this book for free from Tyndale House Publishers. I was not required to give a positive review and all views and opinions expressed are my own.

With DiAnn Mills' trademark whip-sharp writing, Deep Extraction is a suspense novel with plenty of twists and a spark of romance.

FBI Special Agent Tori Templeton is called in to investigate the murder of one of her friends, Nathan Moore. She will have to balance her desire to bring the killer to justice with her need to support her friend Sally through the grief of losing her husband. Working the case with Tori are her partner Max and US Marshal Cole Jeffers, also a friend of Nathan and Sally. But as Tori, Max, and Cole dig into the case they find information that changes the way they view both the investigation and the victim.

This crime caught my attention right from the start. I thought it very intriguing. A man killed by his own pacemaker. But as the investigation continues more information shows the crime is far more complex. Usually, with DiAnn Mills' books the reader is given an insight into who the killer is, with more details about the why and how revealed as the story progresses. But with Deep Extraction even this aspect is given a nice twist, leaving the mystery even more fascinating.

As always, DiAnn Mills' writing is evocative of an excellent crime show. Sharp and to the point. Just how I imagine law enforcement work, think and talk. And the characters follow suit. I love how Cole Jeffers starts as a suspect before moving to an investigator role. At the start, Cole is gruff and plays his cards close to his chest. It leaves Tori wondering what kind of guy he is. But he gets results, even with her grouchy partner. Tori isn't keen on opening up but Cole slowly breaks through her walls one smile, teasing quip, and gentle question at a time. Because Cole also has a great sense of humour. Tori is a strong and professional career woman, but rocked by the recent loss of her brother and trying to stay ahead of her pain and fear. Working the case prompts her to follow through on the promise she made to her brother about getting serious about God. Through her work with Cole, she begins to develop a relationship sparked by serious and humorous conversations and tentative trust.

I enjoyed this book, and I especially enjoyed this particular mystery and investigation. I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment in this exciting series.

The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

Sometimes a novel falls short in plot development or character development. Diann Mills consistently excels at both. Deep Extraction by Diann Mills is the story of FBI special agent Tori Templeton and US Marshal Cole Jeffers. Personal friends of the murder victim and his family, they are called in to investigate a mysterious crime—death via hacking into the victim’s pacemaker. Many secrets are revealed, adding to the story’s intrigue, and both Tori and Cole face personal challenges as they work together through his case. I think parts of this book were a little difficult to believe, such as the murder itself. Overall, I loved the book and would recommend it as a fun read. I loved this book. DiAnn Mills did a superb job. Great plot and great characters. I loved both Tori and Cole. Wonderful job of keeping you guessing until the end. The book was not overly romantic as the romance was secondary to the story line. I will definitely read more of her books every chance I get.

An oil and gas CEO dies suddenly of an apparent heart attack soon after he tells his wife he wants a divorce. The autopsy reveals his pacemaker was hacked. FBI agent Tori Templeton and US Marshall Cole Jeffers are both friends with the wife and are charged with investigating the case.

I read numerous books in several genres lately that deal with hacking of electronics. Scary but totally realistic. Readers who like Christian fiction should enjoy reading the outcome of this crime drama.

All of Mills' books sound interesting but then I start reading and the writing is just not up to par. There are a lot of half formed sentences and what's supposed to be snappy dialog that just ends up falling flat. Good plotlines, but couldn't finish. Hopefully I remember this before I start the next one!!

I found Deep Extraction a book that captured my attention from the cracking of the spine. I know that much of our world is now controlled by computers, but truly would not have thought that a pacemaker could become an instrument for murder through hacking. My thoughts aside, the author brought so many layers into the storyline that this reader was kept wondering just who did what and my suspense was kept on edge until the very end.

The family of Nathan Moore was a loving and pretty normal family. Of course, they were moneyed and lacked for nothing. But they loved one another, went about their daily lives of work, homemaking, and school just as most folks do. But in the depth of their lives, lies were being lived out unknown to those around.

I found the character development tops and the plot complicated yet not so convoluted that it could not be comprehended. The touch of romance was sweet and well-handled. The action scenes vigorous and intense but did not overshadow the main plot lines.

The Christian element was well presented and not overbearing. It just simply flowed as part of the lives of those who were believers.

I recommend this as a book to be read and shared.

Like so many of Diann Mills books, this one was filled with intrigue and suspense. It was not quite as much non-stop action, but I felt it had many threads of a story that went off to tie into the previous book. I would not read them out of order.

I really enjoyed it. It was lighter suspense, but kept me completely entertained and working to discover the bad guys. I kind of hope that in an upcoming book, we see some of the same characters again.

Deep Extraction is my favorite of DiAnn Mills' FBI Task Force series. Hands down. The FBI tasks Special Agent Tori Templeton to investigate a suspicious death. Her friend's husband, Nathan Moore, had a heart attack, his pacemaker failing. She's determined to support her friend but also to stay objective. Emotions can distract her...and so can her unacknowledged hypochondria. Her partner sounds like he's hacking up a lung every time he breathes. Two of her relatives have died of cancer; the "big C" looms at the back of her mind. God didn't save her brother, who strongly believed in Him. But that's besides the point--she has a crime to investigate.

In walks Cole Jeffers. A US Marshal-turned landscaper, he brushes off his badge to find out what happened to his friend. He and Tori must work together through the twists and turns of the investigation. On the surface, Nathan Moore seemed like a good man. He donated to charity and volunteered. Tori and Cole quickly discover that not everything is how it seems. The FBI pinpoints the wife as the main suspect, especially with the discovery of marital problems. Both Tori and Cole, though, believe in her innocence.

I could read Deep Extraction by DiAnn Mills four or five times and learn new things every time. DiAnn Mills is a mastermind. I'm convinced. She packs so much depth into every character that they almost weren't fictional to me. I saw them as real people--like I met them at a coffee shop to interview them for a news story. Each meeting resulted in more information--about who they were. How their beliefs and pasts affected their work. Their hopes and fears.

Cole and Tori's relationship developed naturally throughout the course of the novel. I loved that, and how the characters grew. All of them. So many novels' characters are flat--like a flat-line on a heart rate monitor. In Deep Extraction, though, everyone's heartbeat strengthens as the novel progresses. While the plot is great, the characters' changes--all for the better--really help to build the book into the wonderful piece of literature it is.

DiAnn Mills explores difficult topics like cancer. How God can let people suffer and die. Infidelities. Incorrigible teenagers, struggling with anger, betrayal, and heartbreak. When I closed the final page of Deep Extraction, I didn't want it to be over. When it comes to novels, I'm a hard person to please, but DiAnn Mills blew this one out of the water. She truly outdid herself with this one. I shove many books in my closet, never to pick them up again. But this one? Heart-racing, mind-bending, suspenseful, and thought-provoking, Deep Extraction will have a prominent place on my shelf to be picked up again and again. I will definitely be recommending this one to my friends...if I don't literally throw the book at them first!

Deb’s Dozen: DiAnn Mills’ Deep Extraction is Mystery & Suspense of the Highest Caliber

Mystery & Suspense is one of my fave genres, and DiAnn Mills one of my fave authors in that genre. Deep Extraction is DiAnn’s latest in the FBI Task Force series.

You’d think a pacemaker would save someone’s life—in Nathan Moore’s case, one killed him. Special Agent Tori Templeton has a dilemma—she’s the agent on call when the death is discovered, but she is also a very good friend of Sally Moore, the victim’s wife and prime suspect. Tori and Max Dublin, her crusty partner, respond to the scene.

Tori is disturbed to learn Sally’s first call was to Cole Jeffers, the Moore’s landscaper, instead of to her. Max immediately assumes Sally and Cole are having an affair—a standard solution to an age-old situation. Add to the mix two teenage sons: one an angel and the other depressed and defiant.

So starts the trail of twists and turns and twists upon turns as Tori and Max attempt to solve the murder—the first twist is the Cole Jeffers has reactivated as a Federal Marshall and is assigned to the case.

You will not be able to put down the book as every chapter brings a new development not anticipated (at least by me) in the previous chapter. The characters become very real—they each have problems they’re trying to overcome and I found myself rooting for them to do so. Tori, Max, and Cole are especially believable, as is Nathan, the Moore’s son. The pace is fast, but steady. One thing for sure—you’ll never be bored nor will you guess the conclusion. Five stars again, DiAnn.

DiAnn Mills is a multi-published, multi-awarded author—her books have appeared on the Christian Booksellers Association and Evangelical Christian Publishers Association bestseller lists. She’s won two Christy Awards. DiAnn is a co-director of the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference, teaches, and does research at the FBI Citizens Academy. She and her husband live in Houston, Texas. Check her out at www.diannmills.com.

DiAnn gave me a copy of Deep Extraction, but I was in no way obligated to write a favorable review.

For fast-paced romantic suspense it is hard to beat a novel by DiAnn Mills. Deep Extraction, the second installment in her FBI Task Force series, is no exception. With characters you’ll love, an action-packed plot, and a spiritual theme that touches the heart, Deep Extraction will appeal to fans of this genre. Take this book along on your next weekend getaway.

FBI agent Tori Templeton and US Marshall Cole Jeffers are called to solve their friend Nathan Moore’s death. Not only faced with the shock of the murder of someone close to them, they also have to come to grips with the fact that they really didn’t know him. But they are determined to uncover the layers of deception to find the guilty party, no matter who that might be.

Deep Extraction is filled with tension and surprise twists and turns. The main characters are challenged with finding truth, even if it implicates those closest to them. I found Tori and Cole’s struggle with maintaining professionalism and objectivity in the face of personal feelings a great addition to the book. Can anyone ever really know someone? That’s what they battle as they investigate a case that gets more personal day by day. Readers who like plenty of action will appreciate the dangers Tori and Cole encounter — snipers, explosions, to name just a few. Along with dealing with the sense of betrayal, they must also overcome ingrained fears from past experiences. Trust in God is part of that struggle and is a theme woven naturally throughout the novel. The reader gets a glimpse into the actions of the bad guys before the main characters and I loved that, but I didn’t see the big surprise twist coming either!

Although book 2 in a series, Deep Extraction can be read as a standalone. A page-turner that I just could not put down, this one gets a recommended rating from me.

Recommended.

Audience: adults.

Deep Extraction, book two in An FBI Task Force Series, is written by DiAnn Mills. Nathan Moore is the extremely wealthy owner of Moore Oil & Gas. One of his rigs is boomed and he is later found dead from a heart attack. As the story evolves, it becomes evident that Nathan was killed by someone tampering with the setting for his pacemaker. FBI Agent Tori Templeton is called to investigate the crime. Tori is a long time friend of Nathan and his wife, Sally.

The Moore’s son calls a family friend, Cole Jeffers, to come be with them during the crime scene investigation. Cole is on leave from his job as a Deputy US Marshal. Cole wants to help find the person responsible for killing Nathan. He gets reinstated as a US Marshal and is assigned to the FBI task force in charge of the investigation.

Tori has been partners with Max for some time. Max has just found out he has cancer and this investigation will be his last. During the investigation he is often rude to those around him and has been reported. Together Cole, Tori and Max work together to find Nathan’s killer.

This is an awesome book. Being part of a series, it is still very much a stand alone book. The story is so full fast moving and full of action, I found it a little confusing at times. The crimes against the Moore family multiply as the story builds. Nathan has many secrets in his life that are now being found out. As his secrets come out, the amount of suspects is also building. As I was reading the book, I was trying to figure out who killed him and why. As the twists and turns in the story grew, I gave up trying and just enjoyed this great Christian Suspense/Romance.

The thing I enjoyed most in the story is the friendship that both Tori and Cole have towards the Moores. And their determination to get to the bottom of the crime without letting their friendships get in the way. I also enjoyed the building of friendship between Cole, Tori and Max. I enjoyed the subtle Christian influence in the story as well. This book would be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys detective suspense stories.

Romance, mystery, Christian faith elements, Clean
This was an interesting read. Definitely complex and lots of details. I will say at the very beginning, I couldn't quite suspend my disbelief that the two agents who were friends with the family and wife who initially was a murder suspect would be working the case. However, once the novel got going, Tori, Cole, and Max all were great characters, and loved how the case unfolded. Definitely suspenseful, and lots of intense moments. All the side characters contributed nicely to the story and how the mystery unfolded in unusual ways. Lots of moments that made me want to keep turning pages. That being said, I also had one other qualm
With all of that, it was also fun to see how they gradually fell for each other and some of the moments that opened their hearts in the stress of their jobs, brought them together. They were great characters, with some good redeeming qualities that made for a great read. Perhaps more of a 3.5 because of the doubts and suspending the disbelief, but definitely rounding up for the quality of the mystery and the strength of the main characters thoughts, actions and interactions on the written page. You definitely could see their thought, and know where they were heading, wondering, and could 'see'/read the story really unfold. Great overall read, and I am definitely going to check the other book out in the series.

I seem to be on a fiction kick lately. Maybe because it's my escape. Or maybe it's because I realize I need to spend some time being overtaken by the power of a story. In reality, it's probably a little bit of both. Deep Extraction by DiAnn Mills fit the bill of a story to escape in that showed me the power of a story.

I quickly devoured the first book in the FBI Task Force series - Deadly Encounter so that I could start Deep Extraction. Little did I know, I didn't need to read the first book first. Each story can stand alone. Each book in the series is built around an FBI task force and shares the story of how the agencies work together to solve a crime.

Deep Extraction shares the story of Tori Templeton, FBI Agent, as she teams up with Cole Jeffers, US Marshall. Together, Tori and Cole team up with Tori's partner Max. They work to solve the crime of a man they thought they knew.

Oil and gas magnet, Nathan Moore has been murdered by someone hacking his pacemaker. Though Tori and Cole are both longtime friends with Moore, they soon learn several startling and disappointing things about this man they once held in high regard.

Throughout the story, you are kept in suspense. The truth of what really caused the crime is a mystery you won't likely solve yourself. Though I caught glimpses and had begun to ask questions in the last quarter of the book, the final story only unraveled in the final chapters of the book as it wrapped up.

I loved the character development in this story. Both Tori and Cole had pain from their past to work through, as well as struggles through their current case. In Deep Extraction, you find realistic glimpses of what it looks like to work through some serious pains and questions.

This was a great read! I loved getting lost in Tori and Cole's story. Working to solve the crime was fun too.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Tyndale House. This review is my own honest opinion.

Deep Extraction is a great combination of suspense and romance. It truely keeps you on the edge of your seat. Add to that, the mystery of who is behind the murders, bombings, and threats and you have the best of reads by Diann Mills.

The story opens with both our heroine and hero getting calls to come to their friend's aid as her husband has been found dead and it appears to be murder. Again, I found this made the book most fascinating in that it is told from the perspective of Tori Templeton, FBI agent, Cole Jeffers, U. S. Marshall, and another individual who may or may not be the murderer.

Anyway, Nathan Moore is dead, apparently from a heart attack caused by the digital tampering of his pacemaker and the key suspect is his wife; however, other key persons are added with positive motives i.e. a son and mistress. The case is complicated as Nathan Moore had been the target of environmentalists who have already bombed his oil rig and sent multiple threats on his life and that of his family.

Our agents are having trouble staying ahead of the murderer or murderers and quickly become targets themselves. Tori suffers from a fear of cancer having had multiple family members affected, Cole who was the yard man (on leave U.S Marshall) suffers from PTSD having been wounded badly in a case gone wrong, finally, Tori's partner is dying from lung cancer.

There are so many facets to this story that make it a page turner including the attraction of the key protagonists which is evident from the beginning making you root for a romance to develop and succeed.

This is a 5 star read. I received this ecopy from Netgalley for my honest review.

Deep Extraction tells a story of finding God, loyalty, and pursuing the truth--no matter how ugly it is.

Along the way, Tori and Cole must wade through lies and danger to hunt down the killer who never laid a hand on his or her victim. They also must wade through their clear attraction to each other--something that as they work together more and more, becomes more apparent.

The last thing FBI Special Agent Tori Templeton wants to investigate is the death of her best friend's husband--and especially after she discovers that the moral man was actually cheating on his wife with his assistant--who is pregnant. S/A Templeton is an exceptionally relatable person--she is a hardcore woman who is dedicated to her job and still recovering from the death of her brother from cancer. She finds it impossible to put her trust God--after all, Kevin believed and he still died. She frequently finds herself visiting doctors to confirm that something as simple as a mole is not cancerous.

Cole Jeffers is very happy winning awards for his landscaping designs--and leaving the world of the U.S. Marshals behind. But when his best friend, Nathan Moore, is murdered, he reinstates his badge, and joins the task force with S/A Templeton to solve his murder--and discover who the real Nathan Moore is. Cole found God after someone shot him--and laughed as he bled out. He hopes to bring Tori to God--but is afraid to be close to her.

This is a GREAT story. I love that Tori is so relatable, she is a tough but tender woman who is given the hard task of separating fact from feeling. I am absolutely going to look for more of her books!

This was a thrilling book that kept me on my toes with all the unexpected twists.

FBI Special Agent Tori Templeton and her partner, Max, were called in to investigate the death of Nathan Moore, owner of Moore Oil & Gas. Tori was a friend to Nathan and his wife, Sally, making it sometimes hard to stay in investigative mode. Especially when she wanted to help Sally through the loss of her husband. US Marshal Cole Jeffers was also working the case and was a friend of Nathan's. As the investigation proceeds, they learn that Nathan wasn't the person they thought he was. And that he had been murdered when someone tampered with his pacemaker.

I enjoyed this suspenseful story. With so much going on and the twists in the plot, it could have been hard to follow. But the way DiAnn Mills wrote it, I didn't have any problem keeping up. I just wanted to keep flipping the pages to find out what was going to happen next. Because the more these investigators dug, the more secrets they found.

Cole and Tori are incredible characters. Both are very strong, intelligent people who are great investigators. Their light romance nicely softens the drama. Especially, with the mystery of who is behind the bombing of the oil rig, Nathan's murder and threats to his family.

I really liked not knowing who the murderer was until the end, and was surprised to find out who it was.

I received a copy of Deep Extraction through NetGalley but I am reviewing it on my own as I do with everything I read.

DEEP EXTRACTION is another winner from DiAnn Mills—author of Tyndale House Publishers FBI Task Force novels. This title is the second in the series. The first title was Deadly Encounter and it is still available online

Tori Templeton is our heroine, an FBI agent with real flaws and fears she is struggling to overcome. Her partner Matt Dublin is the guy you love to hate, wearing his vitriol in plain sight from that giant chip on his shoulder. Of course there is our hero, Cole Jeffers who comes off as somewhat of an enigma, but I liked these characters because of their imperfections. They come off as real people doing a tough and thankless job.

The story begins with the murder of Nathan Moore, gas and oil magnate from Houston, Texas. A bombing at one of Nathan’s oil rigs days earlier indicates his death could be part of a bigger conspiracy. Complicating things is the friendship Tori and Cole shared with the victim and his family, as they fight to keep their personal feelings separate from their primary goal of solving Nathan’s murder.

Deep Extraction is a good mystery story. One that will keep you guessing. Readers will also find the gospel’s timeless message woven throughout its crackling dialogue and unfolding plot.

I thank Tyndale House Publishers and the Author for sending me this complimentary copy in exchange for my review.

DEEP EXTRACTION available on preorder from Amazon or in April at these other fine retail sites.

Uncovering secrets is firmly in the wheelhouse of FBI Special Agent, Tori Templeton, but uncovering those secrets when investigating the murder of her best friend's husband takes a special kind of grit. Business tycoon Nathan Moore's pacemaker is hacked shortly after one of his oil platforms is bombed. Coincidence, or conspiracy? As far as Tori knows, Nathan was a loving husband, and father to her best friend, Sally, and their boys. Who could have wanted him dead badly enough to kill him?

Cole Jeffers has been a friend of Nathan's for years, spending almost as much time in their home as Tori did, but almost always at different times. A landscaper by profession, no one knows that he is on leave from the US Marshals Service. When Nathan dies, Cole gets a call from Nathan and Sally's oldest son, asking him to come. Is Lance right in his belief that his father wasn't the man they all thought he was?

The longer Tori investigates, the more deceit she finds. When the Marshals reinstate Cole and assign him to help investigate the murder, she's not sure whether to welcome him to the team, or tell him to take a hike. Can they work together to uncover the murderer before he takes them out, too?

DiAnn Mills writes some of the most gripping romantic suspense in the Christian realm. Deep Extraction is no exception. I had no idea who the mastermind was until the reveal at the end - or I should say, until he was fully introduced at the end. There were hints throughout, but the final reveal brought him/her into the open.

I can definitely recommend Deep Extraction, and really, anything Mills writes. I haven't read a bad one yet.
