I freaking love love love love love this book!!! Merely 48 pages but it gave me lots of insights and knowledge about the British Kings and Queens - one of my all time favorite topics.
The book summarizes the whole history of British monarchy, from the earliest times with Boudicca the warrior queen, to our longest British reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II. Just like all other countries' monarchy, British monarchy also went through many violent and chaotic times. This is part of the reason why I enjoy learning about British history and monarchy. So many things to know and learn from :))
I must say the author of this book kinda favored the Lancaster's side in the War of Roses, through the way he or she portrayed the Woodvilles - including Queen consort Elizabeth Woodville. However, this doesn't shy away from the fact that it is still a wonderful and magnificent book to enjoy if you are into the monarchy in general and British monarchy in particular.
Very nice little book. It has nice illustrations and charming little cartoons spread through the pages. All 100 facts are interesting, but not too obscure (definitely good for kids or anybody that hasn't studied UK history in depth). They are a bit disjointed at the beginning, before Scotland, Britain and Wales were united, but otherwise seem correct and relevant. Interestingly, but in no way a demerit, there is only one single line thrown in about the American revolution. The only thing that took me a bit off guard was the expression "religious toleration", which is correct! But I had to check. I'd never heard of anything but "religious tolerance".
While only a mere 48 pages, 100 Facts You Should Know: Kings and Queens is an action packed adventure through history. Author Fiona Macdonald didn’t just skim the history books for common knowledge facts to share, instead, she digs deep providing readers of all ages with many faces they might not be familiar with. From Queen Boudicca and her epic army against the Romans or Cnut the Great, the most powerful Viking ruler, you’ll lose your head, like King Charles did, with all of these micro-biographies. You’ll learn about how they ruled, who they ruled over, who they fought, what they wore, what the people thought of them, and even that King George II died while on the royal toilet!
