" Lord of the High Lonesome" is the story of Kit and Reese.

A sweet story set in North Dakota, this one has a tough filly who is tamed by a caring hand. Our h and her grandfather have managed the Flying Eagle Ranch ever since she was born, with its owner being an absentee who sent them paychecks. When the current baron finally decides to grace them with their presence, our h is presumptuous and infuriated. Treated him as brashly as she treats her ranch hands, she is equally incensed and fascinated by this brooding man. Though her history has taught her to be wary of the master, the H has other plans..

A tempestuous h meeting a strong H, and sparks flying. I don't think she was a shrew, just a scared woman hiding behind the tough facade. The H was initially annoyed, but slowly attraction emerged. I enjoyed their confrontation and kisses. I necessarily don't think the character should have been feminized, but this was written in the 80s, so I forgive it for its archaic way of exploring transformation. Never the less, a good read!

"Why doesn't he leave us alone? "

Kit and her grandfather managed the Flying Eagle Ranch. For years they'd been doing it without interference from its long line of mostly absentee owners.

Now the newest heir, Baron Reese Talbot, had come to look over his inheritance. He had some different ideas--and they went beyond the running of the ranch!

He wanted to teach Kit how to be a woman. But she wouldn't let him ruin her the way the old baron had ruined her mother. Kit was ready to fight!

The older cover betrays this story. It definitely was written in the 80s, and it reads that way. Brittle youthful (21 year old) female who stumbled upon (35 year old) dominating male who brings out the woman in her. Lots of old school devices used her, physical statue is a huge one--he constantly 'brands his arms around her torso as if made of steel bands' and she even tries to fight him off in one scene by kicking and hitting while he 'contains her ruthlessly.' Yeah. It's a gag.

It's definitely a tale that tries to be feminine, but then also is an identity changer. She goes from strong, but extremely rude girl, and quickly transitions to desperate and hurting, then is finally a capable and friendly woman. But the transitions are stilted and wan--not particularly fun or believable while reading.

Would not recommend to today's audience.

Old school, virgin chasing man with a title. This was a pass along that I happened to pack for a beach trip, because it was disguised as a holiday special... keep moving along. Any book where a lady tells a man to stop and respect her and he doesn't deserves less a 1 star review.

I liked this book. I was actually pulled into the setting a bit and could almost imagine a taste of the west (I am trying to be real grownup and not just...go west, irl). Of course the characters are a little clichéd, but there was a twist that I didn't see and although the hero pissed me off a bit (suggesting she should be more feminine and wear makeup-that would never fly nowadays), I really did enjoy it.

Janet Dailey is actually a talented writer I always thought, but I don't buy the love interest here. The heroine is downright bitchy and abusive the entire book. Her chip on her shoulder makes a little sense but isn't an excuse for all that, and she has to change what he likes too much with her appearance at the end for me. I don't see why either of them would have any attraction to each other.

This story was one of two in a Happy Holidays book, but to say this is a Christmas story is very misleading. The book is well-written, engaging, and emotional, and well worth reading…just not for Christmas.

Awful. Please never read this book. Had to finish it out of morbid curiosity. Sorry, Janet.

Inside the book:

Kit was more shaken than she would admit.

Especially to this man who'd just kissed her.

"Admit it, Kit," Reese said. "That hard shellbof yours cracked. Maybe I should have peeled it away layer by layer."

"Better men than you have tried." She turned to face him, regaining enough composure to battle him.

"Bold words, " Reese said, a knowing glitter in his Eyes. " And lies. I tasted the inexperience on your lips. I doubt if your experience goes beyond a few kisses behind the barn I'd swear you never made it to the hayloft."

"Is that something I should be ashamed about?" Kit challenged.

"No, on the contrary. "Lazily Reese reached out, his fingers closing around the shirt button nestled in the bed of her breasts. "Every man like a to be the first. "

Another quick read by a favorite author but pretty rote. Alpha male and high maintenance woman who runs the ranch for her grandfather but is owned by an Earl. When they meet sparks fly especially since he can see right through her. There love/hate relationship has a happily ever after that almost seemed forced and there is closure but not what I expected.
There are animals, the ranch, Kit's grandfather and the ranch hands, beautiful descriptions of the land, tears, anger, frustration, yelling, sorrow, loss, laughter and a softening of Kit.
Although an old series I do hope to read more of the books in the Americana series.

This little love story takes place in North Dakota. Kit and her grandfather are managers of the Flying Eagle Ranch. An English Baron is the owner and when he dies the property in inherited by Reese Talbot. He shows up unannounced and throws Kit into a turmoil. Kit has a self imposed shell around her and Reese tries to break into it. Good little romance story!

Good, quick read. Tomboy ranch manager meets the new owner of the ranch. She has "those feelings" ... but does he?

Kit doesn't want to repeat her mother's mistake.
A part of the Happy Holidays book.
