Sins and Scandals #1

An Earl by Any Other Name

Rate this book
An earl in the streets, a rogue in the sheets . . .

Leopold Graham, Lord Hampton, was never a man to let propriety stand in the way of his pursuit of pleasure. Hedonism is his only desire in life---until his father's death saddles him with debts that threaten to bankrupt the entire family. Now the only thing that stands between him and utter ruin is marriage to a proper, and preferably wealthy, young lady.

Ivy Leighton is no sweet English rose. Perhaps it's her gypsy roots, but she would rather make a spectacle of her independent spirit than sit quietly on the sidelines. If that means that the only place she'll ever have in society is firmly on the shelf, then so be it. But when Ivy runs into the handsome, rakish Leo who's looking for a respectable, well-bred wife, she can't stop thinking about the troubles they can get into. Now she just has to convince him that a life with her is really what he needs.

5 - "Being respectable... was going to kill him." Stars!

Lauren Smith is one of a few authors who I will happily read Historical Romance by, mainly because it’s so well-crafted you just get lost in the story.

An Earl by Any Other Name; the first book from her new Sins and Scandals series met all of my expectations and then some.

Love was a risk he would not take...

I really enjoyed Leo and Ivy’s story, it’s a sort of old and new money collides type of tale, except Leo’s old money has pretty much been used up when the death of his father uncovers just how badly he had been managing the family’s finances in favour of his mistress in town, he knows he needs to step back from his gallivanting roguish ways and marry well in order to save the families estate, and love is definitely not part of the equation…

I cannot be that man anymore, the carefree fool who didn’t know his life was on the brink of collapse…

Well until his mother starts meddling and literally throws Ivy Leighton in his path. A woman who remembers him as the hero from her childhood, someone she loved in secret, and although Leo feels something is familiar about her, he doesn’t recognize her as the child he used to affectionately call Button.

"Why do I have a feeling you are going to be trouble, Miss Leighton..?"

"Trouble…"

"Oh yes. Just when I have everything planned, you come along and remind me of why I used to be so wicked."

This was just another great read, and although novella length, didn’t feel like the story or character depth had been skimped on, once again the author pulled me in, kept me entertained and left me smiling with this book, as well as introducing me to Owen Hadley, the hero of the next book A Gentleman Never Surrenders due for release in September, and I for one cannot wait to read it!

"I’m already damned, so what’s one more scandal!"

ARC generously provided by the author, and it was, as it always is, my absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review.

A quick trip from lust to love

Unfortunately, I felt this one was a little rushed. It wasn't an overly long story which meant we have to go from meeting to HEA in 164 pages. In this case, it wasn't just that it was rushed, that made me squint and scowl at my Kindle, it was the dreaded...duty or love?

Leo is carrying the burden of his father's death in his mistress's bed. While Leo and his mother held no love for the man, they still must suffer through the humiliation. After their year or mourning, Leo heads to London to get their finances sorted out. A lot of doors previously open, are now closing in his face. What's Leo to do? Find a wealthy wife with a good name, of course.

With a candidate picked out, who is neither nice nor lovable, Leo has resigned himself to a loveless marriage. His mother does not want him to marry the woman and decides to show him who he should have instead.

Ivy is a young woman who is working hard with her fellow suffragettes, to give women equal rights and the right to vote. Her ambition will likely leave her unmarried, but it's a sacrifice she's willing to make. When a dear friend, and fellow suffragette, asks her to a house party she accepts with a smile on her face. Ivy remembers her friend's son who was also her childhood friend and can't wait to see him again. She can't forget how much she enjoyed his company and still thinks of him fondly.

While Ivy and Leo's first meeting was orchestrated, the time they spent together afterwards was because they couldn't help themselves. Both Ivy and Leo have plans for their life, and neither plays a part in each other's plans. While being with each other is a temptation, they know their futures are set to be apart.

I really thought this story had potential. Besides being rushed, I was also frustrated because Leo was lusting after Ivy, while still convinced he was marrying someone else. This, while probably true to the time, was still something that did not show him in a good light. He wanted to have his cake and eat it too, yet it would be Ivy's reputation left in ruin.

Love comes heavy and fast between Ivy and Leo. Unfortunately, my eyes rolled to the back of my head in the sex scenes. Leo talked to Ivy like she was a bloody horse.

"Easy, sweetheart, easy,"

...and it wasn't even just the once. Leo said that twice. Definitely not sexy.

So, unfortunately, An Earl by Any Other Name was not a winner for me. Huge potential, just missed it by that much.

I'm a huge Downton Abbey fan and when I saw Matthew Crawley die I just knew I had to write a story where some form of Matthew had a happy ending. So I dreamed up the scandalous tale of Ivy, the half-gypsy heiress and the reformed bad boy Leo who's now facing life as an Earl after his father dies in his mistresses bed leaving Leo and his mother in scandal and potential financial ruin. I had a blast researching the suffragette movement and giving my heroine Ivy a voice when it came to politics and the rights of women. I hope you guys in enjoy this Edwardian romance!

Book Review For: An Earl by Any Other Name by Lauren Smith 'An Earl by Any Other Name' by Lauren Smith is the First book in a New Series called 'Sins and Scandals'. This is the story of Leopold Graham, Lord Hampton and Ivy Leighton. Please note also this is a Novella with about 105 pages. But when tragedy struck she was taken away by her father. So in the present day she hasn't seen Leo since they were young. Ivy is not the demure lady and town gossip always seems to be talking about her...so he wouldn't think that she would be what a town wife would be. But it appears his mother thinks differently. Sometimes if you haven't read one of your favorite authors in awhile you forget how much you loved their writing. This new Series takes place eleven years into the Twentieth Century. A Large number of the English Aristocracy were on the verge of losing their fortunes and the land that has been in their families for hundreds of years. Leo, Earl of Hampton will do whatever is necessary to make sure the legacy that his father almost destroyed will last through his lifetime and that of his children. He has to find a way to invest in other ways besides land management and tenant farmers. But to do that he has to marry an heiress above reproach who will never cause a scandal. He just doesn't count on his widowed mother's house party plans that will reunite Leo with the only girl he ever loved.

Ivy Leighton is the daughter of a rich newspaper man. A modern woman who wants the vote and will never marry and become someone's property. She watched her mother, a servant who never had control over her life. Even if she fell in love she doesn't know if she can give up her freedom. The only man that she ever loved was a childhood friend who she hasn't seen since she was seven. She remembered he was a cheerful young man who was always nice to her. When they meet again as adults, he doesn't know who she is, and she is sad to see him so proper and joyless.

This is a wonderfully written story that you will truly enjoy. Lauren is a talented author who has the art of word craft down to a science. I sincerely love her writing and know that if you read this book you will too. I highly recommend this beautiful love story.

Series: Sins and Scandal #1
Publication Date: 8/1/17

Delightfully sweet and happy tale that takes place at the end of the Edwardian era (1910),

Leopold Graham, Earl of Hampton had always been a free spirited, happy, loving man – until his father dies in his mistress’ bed. Then, he found that the estate was in debt and the scandal his father created has denied him entry to investments and lines of credit. Now, he is serious and rigid and determined to marry an heiress.

Ivy Leighton is the half-Romani half-English child who lived on the Hampton estate until she was eight. She and Leo were fast friends even though they were eight years apart in age. Ivy has grown up to be a suffragette and feels she’ll have to forgo love and marriage in order to continue in her work for women’s rights because no man of that time would allow his wife to work for or support those causes.

When Leo’s interfering mother cajoles him into having a house party, she invites Ivy and her father to attend. You’ll just have to read the story to see how things go at the house party, but you can assume that Leo is a changed man before all is said and done.

This first book in Lauren Smith’s Sins and Scandals series may be short but it’s got more sass, steam, and sweetness than many full length novels. Some novellas seem too long, as if they should have been a short story. Some end too soon, like they should have been a full length novel. But An Earl By Any Other Name is perfect. A fully developed story that keeps you riveted from beginning to end.

Leopold Graham, Lord Hampton and his mother had been a year out of mourning but no one had forgotten his father’s sins. He “couldn’t escape the rumors, the whispering, the damned utter black scandal that his late father had brought down on his head”. Dying in his mistress’s bed and leaving Leo with a mountain of debt, Leo had to find a way to save his family estate. Before his father’s death, Leo had treaded the line between propriety and scandal, but now his father’s scandals were forcing him to lead a life of boredom. He had to bury the scandal, live a life above reproach, and marry a good English rose. He’d always hoped to marry for love. Someone to match his passions. But now he’d have to marry for financial reasons instead. He wouldn’t repeat his father’s mistake by obsessing over some exotic beauty.
Ivy Leighton had grown up on Hampton estates until she was 8. Her mother had been Lady Hampton’s lady’s maid. She and Leo, though 8 years apart, had been the best of friends. She’d been his constant shadow growing up. He’d called her Button. She’d loved Leo with all her heart before tragedy had forced them apart. “He’d been comfort and heat and light where she’d only endured darkness in her mother’s last hours.” After her mother’s death, she’d been taken away by her father who’d not known she existed. Her mother’s death had affected Ivy greatly. Her mother had never had the chance to live the life she wanted. That’s why Ivy devoted her time to the suffrage movement, making a difference for women in the world. She had plans for her life that didn’t include love for a man who didn’t believe in her dreams. No modern woman could have a husband.
Sixteen years later when Ivy arrives to Hampton House at the invitation of Lady Hampton for a house party, Leo doesn’t know who she is and Ivy is in no hurry to tell him. Ivy had never forgotten Leo but the man “she faced now was businesslike and polite with only a hint of that charming, troublemaking boy she remembered so well”. Still, he was the one man in all of England who could tempt her to fall in love. She must remind herself that love would ruin her dreams of a future as a woman with rights. Leo was captivated by the exotic beauty in his home. His body wanted her but the rational part of his mind reminded him about his plan. Still, the attraction was difficult to control the more time he spent with Ivy. She didn’t appear to be a wild radical like he imagined suffragettes to be. He’d never met a woman who knew about business and economics like she did. She took him to task for his beliefs on women voting. And she utterly enchanted him. Leo knew it was foolish to kiss a woman he had no plan to marry, but he couldn’t resist. And Ivy couldn’t resist either. It was the kind of kiss that could make a woman lose her head and her heart. And that was something both wanted to avoid. But with every touch, their best laid plans were fast unraveling.

A great introduction to what looks to be an enchanting series. Ivy and Leo were charming. Neither wanted to let another have power over their heart because they thought it would mean abandoning their plans for their futures. Leo thought he needed a prim and proper wife to succeed. Ivy thought love would crush her dreams of making a difference. But they learned that they could have love and freedom. Their HEA was a relationship that was a true partnership.
I loved Leo’s mother too. She was conniving but in a good way. She wanted to revive the man Leo had been so he could live life to the fullest and experience love. She was ready to live her own life too now that her husband was gone, and that included her political interests. I have to tell you as I read this, I thought of Mary Poppins when Mrs. Banks was parading through the house in her Women’s Rights sash with the servants singing along with her. I could just imagine Hampton House being like this with Ivy and Lady Hampton leading the charge. I’d love to see more of this family in a future book. And speaking of future books, I’m hoping Mildred gets her story told. I think there’s much more to her than meets the eye. Whatever is next, I simply can’t wait. I think I’ll have a serious series addiction to this new Sins and Scandals series. Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this fabulous book.

He's a rogue of the first order. Never met a woman he couldn't tempt or a party he wouldn't enjoy. She's a firecracker. Independent and meant to be the center of attention. Even if that notice, lands her in some sticky situations and having to face down some judgmental people. Ivy and Graham are two halves of a whole, but too bullheaded to admit it. Lauren Smith has never been afraid of explosive tales and carnal delights. An Earl By Any Other Name stays true to that formula but throws in some laughs and romance to even out the passion. The heat is fierce, the humor is smart and the drama's enough to capture the heart.

ARC REVIEW

An Earl by Any Other Name is the first book of Lauren Smith's new Sins and Scandals series. It's novella length and insta-lust to love. I know they say never judge a book by it's cover but I assumed (yeah I know) that this was a Regency or Victorian historical romance (strictly judging the dress), nope it's Edwardian early 1910. It really threw me off when they started talking about automobiles. Apparently I don't pay close enough attention to the Italic print at the beginning of a chapter. Normally I don't mind insta-love/lust but in this case Leo just bugged the crap out of me because of it, and then throw in the rushed feel of the book and it's almost like he has no personal growth, he just became more accepting. Ivy was fine she was justified in her worries. I loved his mother I kept picturing Glynis Johns the mom from Mary Poppins. I love the era, and I loved the idea behind the story but I wish it was full novel length, I just wanted to see a little bit more of a change in Leo and the conflict not so rushed.

Leopold Graham inherited the title Earl when his father died in bed with his mistress. Leo having weathered the embarrassment and finding out the money's all gone realizes he has to stop being a rake and be a respectable gentleman and that means finding a respectable wife with money enough to save the family estates. Ivy Leighton has known Leo all her life but after her mother's death a father she never knew existed came and claimed her. Now years later she is a beautiful young lady and once again back in Leo's life, thanks to his mother's meddling. She has manipulated things so Leo and Ivy end up together for the different house party activities. Leo spend most of the book thinking to make Ivy his mistress and marry the bland and dry Lady he picked for his prospective wife. Not to mention Ivy and his mother are part of the suffrage movement and he finds that silly, he thinks women aren't smart enough to make up their own minds about politics. I get most men thought that way back then but Leo was just aggravating.

Overall, it was an okay read, not quite what the blurb promised.

Actually, there really wasn’t a story. Leo and Ivy were both likable but the story was so filled with sexual thoughts from Leo and his constant inner thoughts about how he wanted Ivy but really had to marry Miss Mildred Pepperwirth for her dowry. It became quite annoying. Of course, everyone got their HEA but there could have been more story and less sexual thoughts.

There was explicit sex but I skipped it.

Very cute story set in the early 1900s. Leo, Earl of Hampton, is in financial trouble. He plans to marry a wealthy neighbor to whom he is not attracted to save his estate. Much to his dismay, his mother is involved in the women’s suffrage movement. She is planning a house party and talks him into it by saying she won’t go to the political meeting.

One of the guests, Ivy Leighton, spent the first years of her life living at his estate as her mother worked there. Leo was older but played with her and called her Button. When her mother died, the countess found her father and she went to live with him. Her father, a wealthy publisher, is also attending the party.

Leo does not recognize Ivy and the servants have been told to pretend they don’t know her. Leo is attracted to Ivy but appalled at her “women should be able to vote” beliefs. He is falling in love with her and eventually figures out who she is. There is a secondary romance going on but I’ll leave you to figure that out.

I hope Leo’s friends, Owen and Jack, get their own HEAs. I enjoyed this book very much.

An Earl by Any Other Name is set in early 1900’s where women’s right activist are on the rise. Leo Hampton was caught in his late father’s scandal that left him and his mother with little fund after paying off debts. Now wanting to marry to have stable job and choosing a safe choice that will hopefully get his estate back on track. Ivy is a old childhood friend, she’s independent and very much his opposite in beliefs. As a half Gypsy she has seen her mother work tirelessly and not have a voice, now an advocate for women’s rights and suffragette. That’s where they will clash at first.

Ivy is believer suffragette movement and something Leo is not open too. It will be interesting how they will deal with that along with fighting the attraction. They used to be good friends in their younger years when things were much simpler. Now they are both grown up. I like heroine smart and yet vulnerable. I get how Leo is troubled and unsure at first because of his own plight. Slowly Ivy helps him open up.

Their emotions warred, obligation and desire. Slowly unraveling with their new found feelings. Getting to know one another seeing and understanding can find great compromise. I can see parallels in their discussion about women's right to today's issue too. Something many are still fighting for. Cleverly done.

Charming and sweet story, refreshing topic. An easy and light quick enjoyable read. I do wish the ending wasn't so hurried. But better to not drag it out. I can see the set up for book two with a secondary character that will be interesting too.

It's not too often that I read a book that takes place in 1911 as I prefer the medieval era but I actually really enjoyed reading this charming novella. A very well written story and you can't help but fall in love with Ivy and Leo, such a great chemistry they have! I also enjoyed learning more about the Suffragettes and how women had to fight to get their votes back and be treated as equals instead of second class citizens. Definitely recommend this book!!

An Earl by Any Other Name is the first book in the Sins and Scandals series by Lauren Smith.

Leo Graham, Lord Hampton has struggled with debts his father got their family into before his death, and it's come to a point where despite being a man who always wanted to marry for love, he now has to marry a woman for her money. The woman he intends to propose to he doesn't even like!

Ivy Leighton is a suffragette, she has very strong views on women's rights, and although she would love to marry, she won't give up the independence she craves. The independence that she would lose immediately if she were to wed.

Leo and Ivy knew each other when they were a lot younger, they were firm friends, but when Ivy was taken away from their home by her father they lost all contact with each other.

Leo's Mother recently met with Ivy in London, upon seeing how beautiful Ivy is, and knowing the bond between her and Leo, she invites Ivy and her father to a house party she is giving. She wants to show Leo that there are beautiful, sassy women out there and that he shouldn't settle with marrying a woman just to save his estates.

Upon seeing Ivy, Leo is instantly intrigued and definitely attracted, he doesn't even recognise her from his past because she was only 8 at the time! Will he fall for Ivy, will she fall for him? It seems that even if that happens they still can't marry. She needs her independence and he needs money. How can this story possibly have a happy ending?? You will have to read it to find out!

This was a fun romantic quick read. One of the highlights of the book for me was when Ivy and Leo came across each other for the first time as adults. Such a fabulous laugh out loud scene. It set the standard for the rest of the book which had other such funny moments, but also some equally deep moments as well. I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to reading the next in the series.

Leopold, the Earl of Hampton, is in need of money for his family home, Hampton House. Even though he has a young lady in his sight to marry, his mother has other plans. Ivy's mother was the maid for the Dowager Countess of Hampton. After her mother died, Ivy's father took her away and raised her changing her last name to Leighton. Leo's mother invites Ivy and her father to their houseparty. Only Leo doesn't recognize Ivy. Old ties never die, when Leo and Ivy discover each other. A novella with heat and an Earl who learns a lesson in equality.

My escape into historical romance typically settles on the Regency period, so this story was a change for me. Based in the Edwardian period, with very Downton Abbey like moments, this novella was cute.

Leopold Graham, Lord Hampton, was never a man to let propriety stand in the way of his pursuit of pleasure. Hedonism is his only desire in life, until his father's dies in his mistress’ bed & saddles him with debts that threaten to bankrupt the entire family. Now the only thing that stands between him and utter ruin is marriage to a proper, and preferably wealthy, young lady & he decides Mildred Pepperwirth (love the name) fits the bill.
Ivy Leighton is no sweet English rose, she’s the daughter of a newspaper owner & a lady’s maid, but she would rather make a spectacle of her independent spirit than sit quietly on the sidelines. If that means that the only place she'll ever have in society is firmly on the shelf, then so be it. Then Ivy is invited to a house party at the house she grew up in. Lady Hampton thinks her former maid’s daughter Ivy would be ideal for her son Leo & plans to have them thrown together.
I’m a fan of the author & her books are a must read for me, this is the first in a new series & set at the start of the twentieth century in the reign of George V just prior to WWI, whilst this book falls between a novella & full length book the author builds a very clear picture of life in the early part of the century, the characters have depth & are so well portrayed, the star of the book was Mina, I loved the witty dowager who is learning to live life to the full. The pace of the book is very good & I read it in two sessions. With a new series set in a different era I wondered if I would enjoy as much as the author’s Regency novels, I needn’t have feared as it exceeded my expectations. A well written riveting novel that had plenty of humour as well as romance, I can’t wait for the next in the series

Leopold Graham, Lord Hampton, short on funds and long on looks and charm has resigned himself to marrying for convenience after the scandal of his fathers’ death. Half gypsy heiress Ivy Leighton knows what it is to be different and vows never to marry and give up her rights to a husband as she takes up the suffragette cause. Yet Leo and Ivy each secretly harbor the dream of finding happiness and their one true love.

Lauren Smith continues to bring wonderful characters to the pages of her romances as seen in the first work of her, Sins and Scandals series, An Earl by Any Other Name. This story brought together history and sentiment in this author's distinctive and appealing writing for a fast and enjoyable read. Ivy's unconventional background and modern leanings might have clashed with Leo's more traditional values but their attraction was far-reaching and genuine. Ms. Smith managed to parlay Leo from stuffy to sexy in the span of this work with ease and credibility. Ivy was assertive and vulnerable for a great character contrast that played beautifully into the relationship she had with Leo and made for some smoldering interactions. The scandals and sins of An Earl By Any Other Name is the perfect way to start a Lauren Smith series!

A fairly light hearted read. I loved that Leo's mother, despite the travesty of her marriage (or perhaps because of it) and her being a lady of Society, is unapologetically a suffragette. Leo made my heart hurt at first with the way he was so stressed about fixing the damages done by his late father's whoring ways and the way the economy is changing. Planning to marry so as to save those that rely on him instead of for love seemed so tragic. His mother and her devious machinations to show him that love was more important was funny and the results steamy. Ivy was a strong, wonderful heroine that was willing to give up dreams for her goals. The final scenes though were sweet and heartwarming enough that you'd have to be a glacier not to melt at it. As I said, it's a short easy read and I passed a rainy day with great joy reading this. I can't wait to see what the Author does to Owen and Milly in book two.

What’s it About? Leopold Graham, Lord Hampton has been left with cleaning up his late father’s mess. Not only did he die in a scandalous way, he left Leo with debts that could ruin the family. So the formerly rakish Leo has decided to marry for money, except his mother doesn’t agree with that so she invites Ivy Leighton to a house party in the hopes that she can show Leo what life can be with the right partner. Ivy no stranger to Leo though, when she was a young girl she lived in Leo's home and they were the closest of friends. Now she's an independent, intelligent young woman who has no intention of marrying but agrees to attend a house party as a favor to a woman who was like a second mother to her. Sparks fly between Leo and Ivy but Ivy is disappointed that Leo doesn't remember her and she's agreed to keep her identity a secret from him.

Overall reaction to the story? I was thoroughly charmed and delighted by An Early by Any Other Name and Lauren Smith I am a new fan! I really enjoyed this historical romance because it takes place right as women were starting to campaign and fight for their right to vote in England. That fact gave the plot a different feel to it than the usual historical romances that I read, not to mention that it greatly influenced the characters’ behavior. An Earl by Any Other Name beautifully balanced the changing times for women and the need for a sweeping romance between two very different people. I can’t wait to read more of this series!

Describe the hero in five words: Charming. Loyal. Selfless. Fun. Caring.
Did you like him? Yes.
Why? Leo started off as just a typical aristocrat set in the ways of his ancestors because there was comfort in the familiar, even if it wasn’t fair. But he quickly proved his worth by being level headed, open minded (Even when he didn’t realize it). I loved how charming and entertaining he could be. And as much as Leo claimed to be against the suffrage movement, he wasn’t an overbearing character; he was considerate of his mother and didn’t order her around as would have been his right as lord of the manor in that time. He was just so likable and easy to fall for because he wasn’t the type of man who was determined to be right when all the evidence in front of him said he was wrong.

Describe the heroine in five words: Courageous. Determined. Caring. Intelligent.
Did you like her?
Why? Ivy was wonderful! She wasn’t some featherbrained nitwit who said she wanted rights but had no concrete arguments to stand on. She knew why she wanted the right to vote and she knew just how to explain her thoughts to Leo in a way that wasn’t patronizing, nor was it antagonizing. She was logical, and articulate. Ivy’s independent personality didn’t feel forced or fake; she just was who she was and that happened to be a woman who loved and lived fiercely and wanted women to have the ability to control their own lives. She is definitely the type of woman I would love to be friends with because along with that fighting spirit she has a heart of gold. She treats everyone with courtesy, respect, and if she’s known them for long a deep and honest affection, no matter their social status.

Let’s talk about the romance: Leo and Ivy aren’t total strangers, they have a history together and that made this romance all the sweeter. Lauren Smith seemed to want to emphasize the emotional connection between them more than they physical which really worked in this case. With Ivy being a suffragette it made things a little more complicated but it didn’t take away from the connection that these two were building in spite of Leo not being sold on women voting. What I found beautiful about their relationship was the respect between them. Leo never degraded Ivy or women in general, he had his own arguments against women being able to vote that had merit at the time but he was also willing to listen with a fair mind to Ivy’s arguments. I loved that sense of equality between them in a time where things were starting to shift and men didn’t exactly take kindly to women wanting the right to vote. I loved that Leo wasn’t trying to be a “macho” man and was more than willing to learn a thing or two from a woman’s perspective.

How about that supporting cast? Leo’s mother was a breath of fresh air too! She was every inch a society lady but with none of the snobbish, single mindedness of her class. She wanted Leo to be happy and she knew he wouldn’t be happy with a traditional woman. I loved her to pieces. I wasn’t completely sold on Leo’s friend Owen who behaved terribly towards Ivy but in the end, his circumstances explained a lot and now I’m curious about him!

Click It or Skip It?Click It. An Earl by Any Other Name is truly a feel good romance with lovable characters and a swoon worthy romance.

Heroine: Ivy Leighton, 24. Half-Romani daughter of a newspaperman and the hero’s mother’s lady’s maid.

Hero: Leopold Graham, 32. Nickname: Leo. Earl of Hampton.

Date: 1911

How they meet: Leo and Ivy met off-page as children at his family home where Ivy was born to a servant. He knew her only by the nickname “Button” and they haven’t seen each other in 16 years (when she left the household following the death of her mother).

What happens: Leo’s father died a year prior in his mistress’s bed causing a scandal. Worse, he left the estate in a precarious financial position. After many carefree years as a rake, Leo has now had to devote his time and energy to improving the family’s financial situation, which will also involve finding a wife with a large dowry. He has a neighbor woman in mind whom he could tolerate, but his mother wants him to marry for love and to marry someone more forward thinking. Leo’s mother throws a house party, and among the invitees is Ivy. They have reconnected and both have a strong interest in the movement for women’s suffrage.

Verdict: I liked the set up for the story. I haven’t seen much attention given to this time period. I also liked how there was opportunity for personal growth on a couple of fronts for the characters. Unfortunately the novella format made the evolution of their feelings seem rushed. I wish this had been a full-length book so some of the hero’s dilemma’s could have been more deeply explored and also so we could have learned more about the hero’s and heroine’s lives in the past few years leading up to this moment in their lives.

Steam-level: steamy but only mildly to moderately explicit

Me estoy volviendo malditamente blando…

Incluso podría ayudarte, si me dejaras. Ya estoy condenado, así que ¿qué más da un escándalo más?

Tú me importas más que las opiniones de la sociedad. Al diablo con ellos si creen que pueden juzgarte por los pecados de mi padre.

Te necesito más que a nada. ¿Me entiendes?

Leopold Graham, the new Earl of Hampton, resigned himself to marrying for money. It was the only way to save his estate. His father died in the bed of his mistress, an Italian opera singer. Everywhere he went in London, whispers about his disgraced family followed him. His father's behavior left he and his mother shunned from the best homes and businesses, including investors. He had to do something. Leo refused to face the demise of his home and the life he had always known.

Love was not an option for him. His mother had loved his father-but he chose the beds of mistresses over hers. Leo would not make risk his heart.

Ivy Leighton had agreed to come to the house party - at the insistence of Lady Hampton. She had agreed to be part of an elaborate plan of Leo's mother to keep Leo from throwing himself away on a perfectly drab debutante who just happened to have a huge dowry. What she didn't count on was her father's new Hudson Speedabout breaking down a few miles from Hampton - Leo's home.

Ivy wondered if Leo would recognize the eight-year-old that had shadowed him, adoring his every word sixteen years ago. Her unmarried mother had been Lady Hampton's lady's maid. She died suddenly from cancer, leaving the eight-year-old orphaned. Leo's mother and the Hampton staff stepped in and cared for her until her real father could be located. When her father found out he had a child, he came and took her away to raise. Ivy never saw Hampton or Leo again. As her speedabout died on the road, it was Leo that came to her rescue.

Ivy didn't plan to marry. She only wanted to work with the suffragettes, a recent movement gaining traction with women that wanted to vote and have more control in their lives. She had been through six London seasons and had not found anyone measuring up to her ideal- Leo Graham. She knew that was only a pipe dream, and wondered if he would recognize her. His mother doubted it. And her name was different, now. She had take. Her father's. She had a passion for the suffragette movement - vowing to help women be in a better place than her mother, who died a servant. She couldn't see herself as an active participant in the women's suffragette movement and marry. Most men wouldn't allow it. And she wouldn't even consider marrying without love. So she was resigned.

Leo's rescue throws a curve ball to both he and Ivy, as his mother's scheme starts to take hold. While he doesn't remember Ivy, sparks fly whenever they are near each other. Their constant thoughts of each other when they are apart begin to threaten all of his plans- and hers.

Lauren Smith's straightforward style is easy to fall in to; I didn't put the book down until I read the end. Her characters take life on her pages. I found myself thinking of them as people I should know.

I loved the story - and saw hints that there could be another book. I dearly hope so! Excellent read. Five stars.

Leo knows his mother is up to her meddling ways with this house party she wants to host but agreeing to it is better than her attending a suffragette meeting!

Ivy has not seen Leo in sixteen years. Will he even recognize her? What will he think of the intelligent, independent suffragette she has become?

All this and much more in: "An Earl By Any Other Name" by Lauren Smith, book one of the Sin and Scandals series

Smith's writing shines in this title. Her use of deeply descriptive writing and brilliant similies cannot be overlooked. I especially appreciate the clear research she has done for the period including clothing, food, and motor cars. I found myself highlighting many, many striking passages throughout the book. A character I truly enjoyed was the meddling mother! We don't get many good-natured moms (or parents, in general) in HR.

Ivy is a character that feels modern but within the social parameters of the period. She doesn't feel out of place at the turn of the century with her independent ideologies. I sometimes struggle with overly modernized main female characters in HR, but Ivy is an absolute delight

As for steam, Smith's writing is neither flowery nor highly erotically graphic. She has a unique way of blending the passion and physicality of two people joining that I find truly refreshing. While being lower steam, the page count of this title is also a bit shorter than other books with the same amount of steam scenes. Steamy scenes drove the plot instead of being steam for the sake of steam.

"An Earl by Any Other Name" is a short, sweet, and sexy Historical Romance. This is the first book in Lauren Smith's Sins and Scandals series. The Hero's Leo the latest Lord of Hampton who's father ruined the family name. Leo's determined to become so respectable society will forget his family's shame. The fact no one wants to do business with him leaves his family estate financially at risk. His mother's happy to be out of their official mourning period and wants to live a new and scandalous life. Leo's beside himself when his mother informs him she wants to become a Suffragette. He refuses to allow her to attend a local rally but agrees to her request to host a house party. Little does Leo know his mother has the perfect Suffragette lined up to steal his heart.
The romance in "An Earl by Any Other Name" is sweet and sexy and the nostalgia is beautiful. The time period is familiar to fans of Downton Abbey. This setting is when many of the aristocrats' country homes and tenant farms were failing. The gentry was scrambling to either invest well or hunt for a wealthy wife. Lauren Smith introduces Owen Hornsby, a friend of Leo's who is experiencing serious financial issues. I'm sure we'll see him in an upcoming installment of the Sins and Scandals series. He's desperately willing to do almost anything to save his estate. Leo and Ivy are charming and intriguing. My only issue is it's at times overly repetitive. Ivy mentally reminds herself that she's sworn to never marry countless times. Leo mentally convinces himself Ivy isn't a suitable match. I mean EXTREMELY repetitive. That's truly the only objection I have to this delightful book.

QUITE AN AVERAGE HISTORICAL ROMANCE...THAT SADLY LACKS A GENUINE SPARK OF INTEREST BETWEEN THE CHARACTERS.

OUR HERO wants to save his earldom after the death of his father, who died in the bed of his mistress. Terrible scandal that. So, he's going to marry a woman of the peer who can salvage his family's reputation. In turn, he becomes a serious man, shedding his days of gallivanting and skirt chasing which turned him into a terribly dull man. When his matchmaking mama invites a lady over to their home for a small house party, he doesn't expect to fall for the vivacious woman who seems quite familiar and is exotically beautiful. This was a short novel, so the plot went by in a blur that wasn't satisfactory because their romance seemed rushed and became unbelievable. What Leo doesn't know is that he has known this woman his entire life...and fate has other plans in stored for him.

OUR HEROINE has loved Leo since she was 8, being the solid rock she depended on after the death of her mother. She was his BUTTON. When her father sweeps her away from his world, and she immerses herself with societies involving women's rights, she encounters Leo's mother who plots to matchmake them both. Invited to the Earl of Hampton's home, she is reacquainted with Leo under the guise of Ivy Leighton, a name he never knew her by. 16 years later, she's all grown up and he doesn't recognise her. But, she is determined not to marry, unless her husband can support her ideals.

OVERALL....the story was quite average...passion was there but the entire effect just didn't attach itself to me. I skimmed through, having none of the butterflies or eagerness to read their chemistry word for word. Mayhaps the characters were not compelling enough for me.

Posted on What I'm Reading

A few days ago I read, An Earl By Any Other Name by Lauren Smith. I absolutely loved the story. I'm only gripe will be the cover. The cover reminds me of most regency stories, so when I came to find out it was set in 1911 I was a little shock. That's pretty much my only issue with the story. However, it's a wonderful story set in a time where there a lot of change going on. We have women who want the right to vote, would like a voice in the world. They want to be more than object that should be place on a mantle.

Ivy Leighton would love to see change. She loved to be loved for herself and not her money. We still see at this time some of the Lord's trying to keep to the old ways, but the world is changing. Ivy definitely would like to be an equal in the world.

We have Leo, who is one of those lords who is trying to on to the old ways. Of course he has his road all mapped out, but when he gets to know Ivy he's not sure if the road he's on is the right course.

I love how Lauren brings to life these characters in An Earl By Any Other Name. You want to cheer on Ivy for being a progressive young woman, and at times you want to smack Leo for being an idiot. Yes, it's a quick read, but capturing. Yes, it could have been a little longer, but it was enough as a novella. Sometimes you get novellas and go that's it, but this isn't one of them. I love the dynamics these two bring to the story. I can't wait for more to come in this series.

England, 1911. Like so many of his peers, Leopold Graham, Earl of Hampton, is struggling to keep his estate. An endeavour not made easier by his father’s scandalous demise and all the gossip that ensued. Forced to leave his rakish ways behind, he became a dull and proper Lord, and set his hopes on a very well-bread, respectable and wealthy, but ice-cold young lady. That is until he rescues a damsel in distress by the side of the road…

Being the daughter of a lady’s maid and a self-made newspaper magnate, Ivy Leighton is the absolute opposite of a suitable lady. Being an independent spirit and a firm believer in women’s rights, she learned to navigate the endless stream of fortune hunters and scoundrels seeking her attention. They never stood a chance anyway. She already lost her heart many years ago…

Enter Leo’s feisty and fierce mother. Being released form her husband’s reign of terror and shame, she wants to live again and maybe create a little scandal. Most of all she wants to see her son happy. A house party including Ivy and her father seams the perfect occasion to show him he’s not out of options. A plan, a sweet and loving conspiracy, to unite two hearts…

📚 What a lovely little romp of a story! Romantic, passionate, tender. Dreams and memories of a long lost past coming to life again. A little drama, misfortune and social inequity with an undeniable attraction and love that overcomes all!
📚 Reformed rake, newspaper heiress, childhood friends, steamy, open door, suffragette heroine, fated mates
