He's on the vacation from hell. She's on her honeymoon with a husband who isn't what he seems. They're both in the wacky world of New York Times bestselling author Katie MacAlister's paranormal Otherworld.
On his first day of vacation, Jim ended up naked, alone, and banished to limbo. Things went downhill from there. In a wild ride through Finland with very non-Shakespearean Titania, double-dealing Oberon, and a plethora of militant nymphs bent on revenge, The Perils of Effrijim is loaded with quirky characters, a fast-paced story, and an adorable demon who just wants to be with his beloved.
In Cat Got Your Tongue Joy Randall thought her honeymoon with husband Raphael was going to fulfill all her expectations, but almost immediately they run into a decades-old curse, a spurned ghostly first wife, and a long-dead randy Scottish Laird. As if the odd inhabitants of their castle wasn't enough, Joy finds she isn't going to get the honeymoon she deserves until she settles an ancient feud...which uncovers some pretty shocking secrets about her new husband.
This collection of two short stories and assorted mini short pieces were published previously, and gathered here for the first time. The Perils of Effrijim collection also includes excerpts of the two books that launched the characters in the You Slay Me and A Girl's Guide to Vampires .
For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.
Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books followed during the years after Noble's publication. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell, and for the mystery world as Kate Marsh.
Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.
I love all of the dragons and Jim. Wanted more, wanted Jim to explain to Aisling and her to kick the apprentice but for doing that to Jim. Maybe next book.
I bought this little anthology with my own money so can only blame myself for reading and reviewing it. ;-)
What a wonderful little book of short stories and other funnies. It’s been almost a week since I finished it and still giggle over the Facebook conversations at the end of the book. :-D
This is a compilation of existing work by Katie MacAlister, plus a couple of short stories. Some of it I’d read before (being a fan and owning a lot of her books) but over half was new to me and so sated my desire for a bit of her Otherworld madness.
That and the story ‘Cat got your tongue’ just makes me want to read more of the Dark Ones series so, all in all, I feel this book has done what it set out to do.
And what did it set out to do? Entertain, entice the reader to read more by Ms MacAlister and give you a few good old laugh out loud moment.
Would I recommend this book to others?
Yes I would. And not just to fans of Ms MacAlister. I would recommend it to anyone interested in a little tasting platter for her work if they’ve never read it before. It is a good blend of all her best supernatural series and Jim… what can I say about good old Effrijim? Actually, he often makes me speechless as I just don’t know where to start. So maybe this book is a good way to start? ;-)
Would I buy this book for myself?
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt and have no regrets. Great little eBook and very affordable – another good reason to go and buy it yourself.
In summary: A fantastic mix of short stories and other snippets from the mind of the Talented Ms MacAlister. Definitely something not just for her fans (like me), but for those interested in trying her books out for the first time. I highly recommend!
Definitely a great smattering of Katie MacAlister’s different series and characters! If you’re already familiar with her books it’s a great add on. If you’re new, the short stories are a great preview of her writing style but you may not get much from Jim’s emails or Baltic’s journal.
Nope. This is not a novel. It’s not even a novella. There is hardly any plot, no conflict resolution, no point. Over half of the book is just excerpts from her other books. Nothing here is essential to the series, and I did not enjoy the story at all.
I actually finished this a while ago, but it was a reread anyway. I need to go back and start reading these books again to catch up. I remember Aisling and May…but forget after that and I know that I love them!
PS-This is the day that the pump died. So, Dad replaced the pump and the well foot.
This was an ok story but felt slightly unfinished. I liked following a story of just Jim as he is sent to limbo by an angry Guardian. It had the funny parts like the other books in the series but it then just ended. So you have to imagine what would happen next. On the whole a bit of a disappointment in a really good series.
