“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” -Hamlet
This a a very short book I that I read in hopes it would inspire me to be more dedicated to working out. Lately, my mind keeps convincing me I have other things I could be doing other than exercising, even though I know working out will help me sleep, keep my brain sharper, and help me have more energy. This did have some inspirational stuff, but the author felt he had to keep convincing his readers that SEALs are bad ass. Yes, we all know that. He uses a ridiculous number of examples of how SEALs have physical and mental stamina. The gist of it is, if you manage to become a SEAL, you’ll hike/swim/row for preposterously long lengths of time with a ridiculous amount of equipment on your back. I think we all know that SEALs are way more physically fit than we mere mortals will ever be; we don’t need dozens of examples to make that point. All I wanted was inspiration to force myself to workout rigorously every other day. So here is the good stuff to help you with whatever your goal is:
• Earn Your Trident Every Day: Turn weaknesses into strengths and strengths into superior capabilities. Perfection is the goal. Push past the limits of yesterday’s performance. • Luck is good, but preparations is better • Never make excuses
Traits of Mental Toughness • Motivation: Why is it important that I achieve this goal? Figuring that out will help you accomplish what you set out to do. • Confidence: Comes through practice. Putting yourself through difficult things and succeeding. • Focus: Your brain will tell you that you cannot continues on. Your mind must stay in control and stay focused on moving forward. • Resilience: Unwillingness to give up
How SEALs suppress fear: 1) Segmenting goals. Don’t worry about how overwhelming the task is. Break it up into smaller goals/time frames. Essentially, take it one day at a time. 2) Control emotional arousal. Fear produces a chemical reaction. One way to deal with this is to focus on your breathing to regulate your heartbeat and remain calm. Inhale deeply for four seconds, and then exhale in a steady manner for four second. Repeat for at least two minutes. 3) Visualization: Visualize what could go wrong and how you will correct the problem. 4) Positive thinking: Tell yourself you can do it, whatever “it” is. 5) Emotional separation: For a SEAL, it means persevering even if their buddy has just been killed. For the rest of us, it means putting aside setbacks and moving forward with our goal. 6) Plan for the unexpected: Come up with contingency plans if something goes wrong. 7) Concentration and focus: With practice, you will be able to achieve intense focus.
Ways to increase mental toughness: 1) Begin. Make the decision that you’re 100 percent committed to your goal. 2) Milestones. Don’t focus on achieving the whole thing; break it down into smaller goals and check them off as you go. 3) Don’t let setbacks set you back. Readjust when things don’t go your way. 4) Become an early riser: It helps to start your day achieving something—anything. 5) Get outside your comfort zone: You can’t develop mental toughness unless you attempt things that challenge you. Try a new hobby, new physical challenges, learn a new language, etc. 6) Find a mentor to help guide you and encourage you to achieve your goal. 7) Learn everything you can about what interests you. 8) Find others who are interested in what you’re interested in. Mental toughness requires action; it won’t just happen. Success will depend upon your ability to persevere through situations that are varying degrees of uncomfortable.
Because this is only 100 pages, it might be worth your time.
Spends too much time on explaining how tough Navy Seals are (is there any dispute on this point?) with very little time spent on developing mental toughness (without joining special forces that is).
This guide really breaks down what makes the Navy SEALs the premier elite fighting force in the US. The secret isn't just physical ability, but mental toughness. This was a great, quick read on what it takes to reach the gials in your own lives.
Perfect for anyone who wants to know how they can reach their goals.
The first part of the book was not a big bang to me but the second half compensated everything. When the author started speaking about what it really means to be mentally tough and how this can be achieved, I was thinking to myself "Please, can this book continue and not finish in a few pages" :)
Very direct and informative, although quite short (only 106 pages). The author presents some very well laid out, actionable advice for adopting techniques used by the Navy SEALs to become mentally tough and conquer the challenges that you face in life. It is a quick read, but quite enjoyable and worth the $14 or so to purchase from Amazon.
I suspect that the true author must be a former Navy SEAL (given the concise nature of the text, summary of example missions, and a few grammatical errors here and there) who wishes to remain anonymous. There is no biographical information in the book. I wonder if the listed author, Chris Lambertsen, is actually a pseudonym in honor of Christian Lambertsen, developer of the original rebreather underwater system in the 1940s who is credited as being the "Father of the Frogmen." Also, there is a suspiciously similar text called "Navy SEAL Training Guide: Mental Toughness" by one 'Lars Draeger.' Draeger is a German company who manufactures the "LAR" rebreather unit used by the Navy SEALs and developed by none other than Dr. Lambertsen. Nevertheless, whoever the real author is, he wrote a useful text that gives some very helpful advice on how to sharpen your mental edge and apply it in order to achieve your goals.
A reasonable book that has a good overview of the various elements of mental toughness. The book is short and very easy to read.
I only gave it three stars as while it covers the various elements of being mentally tough it does not go into anywhere near enough detail about how to develop these elements. I was expecting the book to give an overview of what it takes to be mentally strong and then go into some depth around how to develop that strength...
I’m summary, an easy to read short book that gives a good overview of the topic but fails to address anything in depth
Navy's SEAL training manual on physical conditioning and mental conditioning is very hard and tough to get through due to extreme routine and the higher level of training. Mastering our own mental strength is one of the huge phase of evolution to improve our limitations.
Training everyday to build immunity on the challenges on day to day basis. Automated body responses until it becomes part of your own toolbox.
The book set standard on the mental training overview and how we can apply this manual to our psych.
Definitely something that anyone, not just those in competitive fields (which is pretty much everything) should read. I really enjoyed the way the author wrote and also the way he incorporated real world in with how the SEALS do things. I’d highly recommend reading it. I know a lot of the things he talks about are in a lot of different books but he had a way of putting it in OBVIOUS terms. Loved the book, took very little time to read.
Navy Seal - elite special force , one of the most toughest persons to ever live on this planet .
Book gives good detail about - what is takes to be Navy Seal ? How to develop warrior mindset . Some of the tested steps to combat fear have been discussed .
In this ever changing world with full of chaos , a must read for everyone who wants to make an impact .
Not worth it even the 100 page read. There's nothing in the book about actually developing mental toughness. It just talks about Navy SEALs and how badass they are - which undoubtedly they are - but that was not what the book premise was. The extremely brief guidelines are also basic GK which you see in motivational posters everywhere.
Inspiring books to read - in life or at work, there's set backs, unexpected situations, challenges, failures, obstacles, fears, stress that threatens your plan or goal. But never give up on pursuing your goals, Simply acknowledge , face them head on, and accept those obstacles, adapt, be resilient, adjust, do your best, be diligent, and prepare for contingency plans.
I highlighted very much of the book to go back and re-read when I feel I need a reminder of the powerful advice this book holds. I also have a much greater appreciation for our Navy SEALs.
Having read other books by Seals I found this to be abit shallow, touching on the surface of mental toughness. Nice cover, content could be better. If its your first Seal book, you might enjoy it but after reading Goggins, this is elemntary :)
70% of the book is about how the navy seal are thought and exceptional and smart and ....................., This book is about publicity more than developing mental toughness
If I was a navy SEAL I would give 4 stars, but since I am not (unfortunately) it's not always clear how it all directly applies to me. Good read nevertheless
One of the best book I have read in 2020. I would recommend read even if are not thinking of being a SEAL. It is about life, career and how to achieve the next level in your life.
Picking up certain skills to strengthen your mind, this book shares out much valuable techniques. Will always keep advice in my head for my journey in life.
