Working for Karma Incorporated might sound like the best job in the world, but there’s one really big catch: you’ve got to die to get it. Cassandra Mercer died at the ripe old age of twenty-one and is now gainfully employed by the Afterlife Corporation as a Karma operative. Her job duties include manifesting bad karma on unsuspecting victims.
Two months into her internship Cassie is promoted and given her first solo case. His name is Bishop and he is a cheat. He needs some bad karma, and Cassie’s the right girl for the job.
Inflicting a bit of payback on this cheat should be easy for Cassie, so she gets permission from her boss to do a little investigating on her own time. Investigating into her living life, the one she can’t seem to remember. The only problem, she is forbidden from doing the digging herself. Afterlife Corporation rule. She can hire someone to look into it for her, though, and that someone turns out to be Drake Greco. She regrets her decision the moment she walks into his office…

She’s tried moving away a few times but always comes back. At the age of ten, she decided she would be a writer and has been determined ever since. She currently writes full-time, but still, continues to “make things pretty” by designing book covers and websites for her fellow authors and bloggers. Cassie died but unlike most it took a year for her to show up in processing and be given the choice of limbo or working for the Afterlife Corporation. Obviously, she doesn’t want to do the time in limbo so she agree’s to work off the time as one of Karma Incorporated’s newest recruit. Cassie may just be a little too good at her job because what should have had her in training for at least a year has her out in the field with her first case after only two months. Her job is simple to return to Earth and create Karma to help change a person’s life for the better. Only Cassie has one little problem she can’t remember what happened to her and when she returns to Earth she seeks out someone to find out what happened to her. While she may not look like herself anymore diving into her past may just blow her cover and reveal more than she bargained for.
I like Cassie she’s very good at delivering Karma in her own unique way using her intuition to make it all work out just the way it needed to. However, she can’t let her past go even though she’s moved on and finding out what really happened to her is important even if it’s against the rules. I admit I’m intrigued by Drake there is something about him I just haven’t figure out what it is yet but I see an interesting connection to Cassie that changing her looks may not break off.
I’ve had my eye on this one for a while, the cover has been calling my name. I love the concept for the Karma Incorporated it all makes sense now and I almost wonder if the author has it all figured out. The idea that the Afterlife Corporation exists with ties to the world on earth is fascinating. I’ve not read a book by the author yet but I loved her writing style it’s smooth and easy to get lost in Cassie’s story. I enjoyed the characters it was easy to connect with Cassie and I can’t wait to see how her story unfolds in the next chapter as well as what really happened to her. This is a quick fast paced hard to put down the story that captures the imagination.
Review of CHEAT:Karma Inc Book 1 by Gillian Zane **** 4 Stars **** This review was done on behalf of CLiK Book Blog.
This is the first book in a new series for Gillian Zane and it delivered on the quirky that I've come to expect from Gillian.
You can't get more quirky than a girl who's offered the job of a lifetime but has to be dead to do it! Yep, you read that right, she's dead and working for Karma Inc in Afterlife. Cassie Hail or Cassandra Mercer as she was know by when she was alive, is the deliverer of retribution when someone still living needs to be reminded of Karma's power.
Into the picture comes Bishop. He's the womanising, douche bartender she's got to teach a lesson too. He's got his girlfriend pregnant while playing the fired behind her back but that's not the only negatives against him. Cassie must make him see the right side before it's too late.
With her past life a mystery, will Cassie be able to deliver her dose of Karma to Bishop or will she blow the whole job with her need to remember and track down her past life?
Great story concepts and a series I'll now be following.
Thank you Gillian Zane, for the opportunity to read and review this unique story.
I'm a big fan of Gillian Zane's NOLA Zombie series so I knew I needed to give Cheat a read.
Cheat is the first installment of a six-part urban fantasy serial so the abrupt ending was expected. It's hard for me to rate serials since I like to read the whole book before I forming my opinion but Cheatwas a pretty good start and it grabbed my attention enough that I want to read the next installment to see where Cassie's story leads us next. Plus there's the dark and mysterious Drake to figure out.
Cheathad all the right things to suck you in; a sassy heroine, supernatural elements, intriguing mystery and potential for a smoking romance.
Karma indeed is a bitch. Its even more of a bitch when its after you for all that you have done that required her to come back and bite you on the ass. In comes Cassie/Cassandra. She has the job of a lifetime that will come back to bite a many a person for what they have done. This time its one Bishop.
I liked the premise of this one and look forward to seeing more of Cassie and the payback she has in store for the ones that thought Karma was nothing more than a thought. I would like to watch as Cassie begins to piece more of her before life now life together. Cliffhanger or not this was a good read that provided something different. **This ARC was provided via Bewitching Book Tours via Instafreebie in exchange for an honest review.**
(3.5 Stars) I am always looking for paranormal reads with a new take on traditional creatures, views etc. In the case of "Cheat" Cassandra Mercier finds herself dead at an intake session in the Afterlife where she is being told that her life held so much darkness she must now live close to eternity in Limbo or working in the Afterlife. After considering her options, she decides to work in the Afterlife for Karma, Inc. where she hands out justice for those who need a chance at changing their ways.
After shadowing another operative, Cassie is handed her first case. She is to work at a bar with a bartender who is currently cheating on his pregnant girlfriend and stealing from the bar and co-workers. Rattled because this will be her solo case, Cassie also can't seem to reconcile not knowing what happened to ten months of her missing dead life. So, with the help of her boss, she hires a private detective, Drake Greco. She doesn't tell him the truth about who he truly is and he is quite adept at figuring out when people are lying to him. He is on to Cassie immediately and although he agrees to take her case he warns her he will figure out what she is really up to.
This read started a little slow but once you reach about 40% in things truly start to get interesting. I found the character of Cassie interesting but really wanted to know more about Drake. I wish the author had taken more time in world building and definitely transitions from one scene to another. I found her transitioning to be abrupt and without fluidity. I also felt that the ending was too abrupt. Yes, it is a cliffhanger (I happen to like cliffhangers by the way) but it could have been handled more smoothly. I will be going on to the next book in this series. Hopefully, some of my issues will be resolved there.
First time reading this author. Not sure of the genre. Paranormal. Unique plot and idea. Only downside is its a serial book with a cliffhanger . Quick fun read.
Five stars for Cheat by Gillian Zane Genre: #Paranormal, #Drama, #afterlife Audience: YA, NA, Adults Series: Karma Inc. Book One
Conclusion: Cheat is a funny paranormal story about karma. Cheat are all your fantasies of bad karma come to life. The Bullies, the bad guys, all of them get what they earned. I loved it. It's extremely well written, in lessor hands this story could have tuned boring or a Stereotypical but this story is non of that. I loved the description of the afterlife as a corporation you can work for. It made me want to drink down a margarita and watch it all pan out. I warmly recommend it to any and all.

I received this book from the author for an honest review.
I loved Gillian’s zombie series so when I saw she has a new series starting, I jumped. This book is a totally different concept for me and it also intrigued me. I mean working for Karma, Inc. You are the person who will be dishing out the bad karma we all want people to get served….awesome right???
Cassie wakes up and is given a choice…Limbo or working in the Afterlife. Well who wants Limbo right? She takes the Afterlife job and the sub company, Karma Inc. She is a bit distressed because she can’t remember anything about her life. Now most people can remember their life but not their death. Plus Cassie finds out she was being “processed” a lot longer than most people ……hrmmm…..
The story is told in mainly present tense but we do see flashbacks of Cassie getting processed and the parts of her life start to come back to her while she is working her first Karma case. We can see her figuring stuff out while also secretly investigating her life and death.
Now I will say the beginning of the story was a bit slow BUT that is because we are setting up the world Cassie will be a part of. We had to get to know the ins and outs of the Afterlife. SO if you give it a few chapters to get things going the rest of the book flies. The end of the book left me saying YES because I wanted to know what her investigator was going to uncover for her in the next book.
I’m not going to go into a lot of depth with my review of CHEAT because it’s a very short novella that is part one of a six part urban fantasy serial, and because it felt more like this was simply an introduction to the story. The main character is Cassie, who was known as Cassandra Mercier before she died. She’s having trouble accepting her new life in Afterlife because she can’t remember her old one, which is not normal. What’s also not normal is how long it took for her to be processed. While it’s against the rules for her to look into her own life and death, she can hire someone else to investigate as long as she doesn’t get caught or reveal who she really is. This is where Drake comes in and helloooo Drake. He’s all dark and mysterious and I am definitely intrigued by him. I’m assuming he’ll be the love interest for Cassie and I can’t wait to see them together.
CHEAT is told only in Cassie’s POV and as I mentioned before, is part one of a six part serial that ends with a little cliffhanger. I’m not sure when the next one will be out, but I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for it.

And oh boy Bishop has truly earned bad karma....
Cheat is the first book in the Karma Inc. series by Gillian Zane. Cheat is a paranormal novel about "Afterlife" and Karma. I really really liked this book and couldn´t put it down.
I like all books from this author , but Cheat is my favorite so far and I can´t wait till the next installment.
Cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater. Wow, to be a fly on the wall in the mind of Gillian Zane! She blows me away with her imagination, from Zombie Romance to Dying to work for Karma.
Cheat is about a young women named Cassie, who apparently has died and is offered a choice between Limbo and working in the Afterlife. Limbo is boring, so of course she takes a job in her Afterlife working for Karma, Inc.
She does well and gets promoted and given her first case... Time to issue some Karma! Unfortunately, she doesn't remember anything about her life or death, so she does some research into it, secretly of course.
Read to find out what she learns and slowly remembers and to see her at work with Karma, Inc.
I'm so looking forward to book 2 in the series to find out more! This was such an Awesome read, I 100% recommend this book! One-click ASAP, you won't regret it!
****I received this author copy in exchange for an honest review.****
This was an interesting start to this series. It's funny and quirky. The main character, Cassie, is complex. At first she was a bit ditzy, then she became more interesting as the story progressed. I have to say, it was not exactly what I expected from reading the summary. It was interesting enough that I will probably read the next book to find out what happened. I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Not a HEA, no dual POV. It's more of a part one, really annoying. Ends on a mini cliffhanger... but it's the only book in the series so far. I'm not a fan of books released in parts, unless I read it when all the parts are written so I can read it like a regular book. Had I known there was only a part one I would have held off until it was completed. That said, what I did read was written well and entertaining. It's not a romance, more of a paranormal mystery, so far.
Oh to have Gillian Zane's imagination. This book was so much different than my normal reads. But I really liked it even though it ended in a cliffhanger. I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.
OMG.....I need more! Gillian Zane has done it again! She has written another book that I'm addicted to and cannot wait for the next book! If you've ever wanted to see karma in action, then this is THE book to read! More, more, more!!!!!!!!
