Every year thousands of Australia’s wild brumbies are aerially culled or captured and sold for slaughter to manage the world’s largest population of wild horses.
Saving the Snowy Brumbies highlights the desperate plight of the Snowy Mountain Brumbies, as Kelly, Vicki and Amanda Wilson head over from New Zealand to take part in the 2016 Australian Brumby Challenge and learn more about the plans for these iconic horses.
The sisters rescue horses from the Bromby cull, and patiently tame them sufficiently for them to be brought back to New Zealand.
The book outlines the activities the girls do with the ponies, which have never been handled before, but with perseverance they can become lovely family pets and even perform well as show jumpers.
Kelly Wilson has written three adult books as well as the children’s picture book Ranger the Kaimanawa Stallion. She and her sisters also starred in a Television series, Keeping up with the Kaimanawas, which followed their work taming New Zealand wild Kaimanawas.
She said, “It seems fitting that our work with the wild horses first began because of our showjumpers, when, back in 2012, the Kaimanawa Watch Me Move won Pony of the year.”
I loved this book from its stunning front cover, interesting chapter titles, and wonderful photographs throughout, as well as the engaging text .The glossary at the end is helpful especially to anyone who is not so familiar with horse terminology .It will be enjoyed by anyone who loves animals, and positive stories about hard working young people .
Based in Northland, NZ the Wilson sisters are leading figures on the equestrian scene, and run the hugely popular Showtym Camps for young riders.

This book was about 3 sisters journey on taming the wild horses of Australia. It includes the struggles, the successes, heart break and happiness. All of them challenged to tame a wild pony in just 150 days for the Australian brumbie challenge.

I personally like this book because you can learn things while following the journey. I have learnt about the plight of the brumbies and how there was a plan to cull 90% of the snowy mountain brumbies. I think that it is awesome that 3 kiwi girls have an oppurnity to tame some pretty wild horses.

I was interested in this text because I love horses, I have read Kelly Wilsons other stories and I really liked them so I though I would try this book out. One of the particularly shocking thing in the book is that one of Vicki's horses passed away. In this text I learnt about the wild brumbies, the comparison of the mustangs, brumbies and Kaimanawa (all wild horses). The interesting style of this writing is that the writer also experienced the journey along side her sisters (who she wrote about) so she could include herself in the story.

What you might do the same/differently if in the position of a character in the text.
If I was Kelly I think I would try do things pretty similar to her but I would keep my horse after. If I was Vicki I think I would need help training my horse because I would not know as much as her.

This is a lovely book and I highly recommend it to all horse and animal lovers. The pictures are, as with all Kelly’s books, phenomenal. The story is even more wonderful, and details the Wilson Sisters taming of brumby ponies in Australia. Kelly does not gloss over difficulties and at times the heartbreak made me tear up. It is incredible to think that these once wild ponies were tamed, flown, competed, and sold to children in such a short amount of time! This book has really motivated me to focus on fun and get out of the arena more, while ensuring my horse had a solid foundation as this can only make the more difficult work easier.

Kelly Wilson returns to form after Mustang Ride which I felt was getting a little repetitive and "we did this... and then we did this....". She acknowledges herself in the afterword that this is a more reflective book and I think it benefits from that. It ties together elements of all earlier books, the learnings and experiences. It would even be possible to read as a stand alone because of the care she has taken building some of the earlier stories and background into the brumbies story. Nothing is overdone and it is an engaging read. Recommended.

I was unable to finish this book and have little knowledge of horses personally though I love and admire their beauty and spirit. This is written by three New Zealand sisters. I regret I just can't come to terms with the fact that capturing our brumbies, training them, transporting them to New Zealand and performing/competing is compatible with 'saving' though clearly the horrible culling done is a nightmare. It is well written for those who are comfortable with this concept.

An interesting book about saving wild brumbies in Australia from culling. There does seem to be an opinion that the brumbies do a great deal of harm to the Australian natural flora/fauna. Also because these women have done a great job of rescuing the Kaimaniwa horses in New Zealand, I'm not sure why they went to Australia, got horses and brought them back to New Zealand. A quick read, great pictures but the premise seems a little confused.

Another great book by Kelly Wilson. This is the 4th book of hers I have read. Easy to read, amazing photography and super awesome what these sisters are doing internationally for the plight of wild horses.

Tripe

Horrible writing, horrible ignorance on the damage the brumbies are inflicting on the natural wildlife of the Snowies (this is exactly why the government ecologist scientific adviser quit), perfect example of good intentions doing great harm.... now with pretty pictures.
