There are so many kinds of pain, of having a haunted soul and Kathryn Knight’s Haunted Souls is a romantic suspense that exposes the haunted souls living within a couple torn apart by time, distance and secrets as well as the soul of a young boy, who had died 300 years prior and wandered through time in search of his mother.

Emily and Brett found passion and magic in their brief fling. When Brett went off to become a specialized military operative, that should have been the end of it, but Emily was a teen in trouble, pregnant, alone and determined to raise her child to the best of her ability, no matter what. Four years have passed and Brett is home, can Emily reveal the secret she has kept all this time? How would they tell their child, Tyler that his new best buddy is really his father?

When Tyler begins to have an imaginary friend, Em wonders, is it having Brett in his life or just the imagination of a child’s mind? And then it all started, the lights flickering, doors slamming and Tyler’s sudden ability to spell out a name he should never have heard of. He says Josiah is lonely, sad and wants his mother.

Meanwhile, Brett and Emily struggle to get over the sins of their pasts, the anger and resentment, shedding the guilt they each feel. Will curing their own Haunted Souls be a key to helping a lost soul find his way into the waiting arms of his long deceased mother? They say love conquers all and knows no limits, is it possible for Brett and Emily to heal through their shared love of their son? Will love carry on into the afterlife, too?

Kathryn Knight’s tale of the ghosts of the past and second chances to heal is filled with the unknown, a shining light for the future for both the living and the dead. Ms. Knight’s ability to weave a tale of such intricate design is refreshing as this is not just a romance of second chances for one couple too young for what life threw at them, but a chance for another lost soul to finally find the comfort and love it seeks. Wonderful world-building, strong characters that are fleshed out and so human and well-meaning, even in their inadvertent mistakes and the priceless innocence of youth in a child still able to believe in the magic we lose as adults. Start to finish, a fabulous tale that unfolds like a sweet rose, thorns and all.

I received an ARC edition from Kathryn Knight in exchange for my honest review.

Emily and Brett fall in love and have a whirlwind romance but when Brett, a bomb specialist in the Army, gets his deployment orders, they agree to break up. While Brett is overseas, Emily discovers she’s pregnant. She wants to tell Brett the news but is conflicted. Being a single mom is more challenging than she ever thought possible, but she takes on the responsibility. When Brett returns home a few years later and discovers he’s a father, will he turn his back on his son and mother to his child?

Brett, now home from his deployment and suffering from PTSD, doesn’t know if he can trust Emily fully. She kept her pregnancy from him and while he still loves her, he keeps her at an emotional distance. He loves his son, Tyler, and would do anything to protect him. When Tyler’s imaginary friend turns out to be an actual ghost, Brett will have to slay his own internal demons or risk losing Emily forever.

While this is a good second-chance romance, it’s a fantastic ghost story. I found Emily and Brett’s relationship an emotional roller coaster and at times a little over the top. Brett’s got trust issues and I get that, but he loves Emily and their child, doesn’t he? Then he needs to trust in his love and stop punishing Emily.

My favorite sub-plot in Haunted Souls is the ghost story. Who is this imaginary friend of Tyler’s and what does he want? Is he malevolent or is he just looking for his family? Beautifully-written suspense by Kathryn Knight had me clinging to my tablet, wondering what would happen next.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Haunted Souls. Knight is a brilliant storyteller with a gift for creating realistic characters and events. I look forward to reading more from her. Highly recommend!

My Rating: 4.5 stars

Transcending ordinary.

Despite the apparitions, the graveyards and the PTSD-fueled nightmares, there is a mellowness to this excellent ghost-story-meets-second-chance-romance. That isn't to say there isn't a spook factor, violence and raised heart rates during the spicy scenes, but a horror story this is not.

Pay attention to the plural word in the title, because the ghost haunting young Tyler isn't the only haunted soul in this book. Back from two tours overseas, explosives expert Brett Leeds is recovering from injuries, but haunted in his nightmares. His life gets a lot more complicated upon discovering he has a toddler son with an intense fling he had when home briefly. Young single mother Emily is trying to make amends for keeping her terrible secret. The novel opens with the revelation, and follows the timeline of Emily, Brett and Tyler struggling to get reacquainted and trust one another.

I liked how author Kathryn Knight handled the emotions between Em and Brett throughout the book. Confusion and hurt feelings mix with desire and compassion. Getting in the way is the very real situation where individuals with PTSD distance themselves.

"There was no excuse. And yet, some small part of him searched for a way to absolve her of the betrayal as he drove away from her house."

Despite all the emotional confusion, these two are still as hot for each other as they were on a two week break four years ago. Blistering attraction exists between two decent and good-looking people, but in the past they were hampered by schedules out of their control, timing and timidity, and in the present they are skirting those same issues. Lesson learned is to grab onto what you care about and work it out somehow. Brett and Em's story unfolds in layers, and is interesting but ordinary. The realism is compelling. Knight makes you feel Em's trepidation of being a single parent and Brett's confusion upon learning he is a father. The narration is heartfelt, yet never overly dramatized. And then toddler Tyler starts talking to blank corners in the room....

Brett and Em soon become convinced Tyler is being haunted. Most of the time it seems benevolent, but there are those instances that point to danger for Tyler. Trying to find a solution for the haunting brings the struggling couple closer, and banishing the ghost becomes imperative. Meanwhile, a very real menace is hovering on the fringes, ready to pounce on Em.

This book is recommended for those who like a ghost story, a military story or second-chance lovers. It is a perfect Halloween selection.

Emily Shea had a fling with Brett Leeds but he left and went on to training with the Air Force. Something she knew was going to happen. But then Emily finds herself pregnant and now after 4 years Brett is back. Tyler, Emily and Brett's son, has an imaginary friend. But he's not really imaginary. He's a ghost and he wants his mom. Emily sees too many things not to believe but it takes more for Brett to believe.

Okay, it's a ghost story but also a second chance story. The book seemed conflicted to me. Trying to combine a ghost story with the romance but feeling a bit stiff in the trying. I did like it though and I will probably read more by the author.

Kathryn Knight is a new author for me, and I found this to be a well written book. Emily and Brett meet up again after five years, and he is in for quite a surprise. Haunted Souls is a comtemporary romance with some paranormal tossed into the mixture. The book contains a little bit of history, and how the ghost comes to be. Overall I found this to be a good read and I would recommend it to others.

I am a fan of Kathryn Knight’s other books. Each one I have read, devoured, and loved. Haunted Souls is the same way. I received the book, started it, and could not put it down. I felt like there was a bonus story in this book. The story of Tyler and his ghost friend, Josiah, was the main story with the bonus of Emily and Brett’s love story.

The ghost story gave me goose bumps so many times. I could not imagine being in Emily’s shoes watching her 4 year old son interact with a person only he could see. Yet, Emily never doubted Josiah’s existence. Josiah did not directly interact with Emily but he did let her know he was there, many times. With each of these times I reacted in fear for Tyler and awe of how calm Emily managed to stay. I believe I would have acted more like Brett. The disbelief of what his son was saying and being unsure how to react. I am thankful that Tyler had his mom to protect him, believe him, and help him get Josiah back to his mother.

Emily and Brett’s story was not unique in that a soldier comes home on break. Girl gets pregnant and soldier goes back to war. The difference is how Emily handled it. Instead of freaking out, she did what she had to do to keep her baby safe. The choices she made were not easy. I admired how she became a single mom, struggling, yet never giving up. I also admired how she handled Brett’s coming home and finding out about Tyler. She didn’t place blame, in fact she shouldered more blame that she should have. She trusted that Brett would be able to step into their life and put Tyler’s happiness first. Brett did not disappoint either. He became the man that both Emily and Tyler needed. Kathryn Knight wrote their love story in very real terms. It was not instant fall back into a relationship. There were trust issues to deal with, histories to come to terms with, and a friendship to reestablish. The attraction was still there, but both knew they needed more to become a family.

I certainly recommend checking out Haunted Souls.

This is a second chance romance with a ghostly challenge!

After a seriously hot fortnight affair, Emily Shea and Brett Leeds knew they would both go their separate ways - Emily to study to become a vet whilst Brett going to training in the military. What neither had anticipated was that Emily would become pregnant and give birth to their son, Tyler. Four years after they last met, Brett returns to his hometown where she lives and now Emily is going to inform him of his son's existence . . . . Brett is determined to get to know his son, resenting the four years he has missed knowing about him but also starting to understand why. However there are other, possibly more worrying, concerns - like Tyler's new ghostly friend who has moved into the family home with Tyler and just what is wrong with the mother of Tyler's best friend from 'school'?

This is an enthralling story with so many threads interwoven in it making a complex but highly engaging story. The struggles of being a single Mum, the stresses of witnessing the death and injury of close friends whilst on military duty, the drama of their new joint parenthood, abusive relationships and the impact of a twelve year old ghost haunting a child all intertwine to make this superb story I have no hesitation in highly recommending. With well crafted characters, packed with angst, turmoil, danger and romance, I am so happy the author invited me to read this captivating novel - I'll certainly be looking out for other novels by her in future!

Many thanks to the author for gifting me a copy of this novel. This is my honest review.

Haunted Souls, by Kathryn Knight, is a tale about forgiving and loving yourself, despite the guilt that weighs you down.

Emily Shea had just introduced Sergeant Brett Leeds to their three year old son Tyler. The two haven’t seen each other in five years, and already the shock of a child begins to fall upon Brett. While struggling with their tense relationship, as well as their lust for one another, Tyler, meanwhile, befriends an unknown entity named Josiah. With a past that won’t leave them alone, and an uncertain future at stake, Emily and Brett must work together to ensure the safety of their son, even if it means putting up with each other. Knight weaves a Gothic story about a couple who picks up the pieces of their past, and learn that, even with the harsh realities in the world, they could still find refuge in each other.

To be honest, Brett irritated me quite a bit. Emily did everything she could to get into contact with him, but he still blamed her. Even so, he does demonstrate a certain protectiveness over her, and it’s clear that he still has feelings for her, no matter what he says. May attitude towards him changed when I finally realized the hell he’d gone through. Though his relationship with Emily and Tyler are slowly blossoming, he still has to deal with the nightmares he has, with Death carefully shrouding him in dark delusions. Then there’s Emily, who struggled with both her guilt and her worry for Tyler. But even so, the two managed to pull together through Joe’s assault, and again, through Josiah. Again and again, these characters show that, despite everything that’s happened, family is still family. Even if you’re separated by time, or memories, or even death, family is always going to be there for you.

This idea of family is an overarching concept of the book. Emily and Brett were still able to find one another, though there is a lifetime of sorrow between the two. Josiah waited for his mother, and when he couldn’t find her, he began looking everywhere for her, even as a ghost. Even Gayle, who was domestically abused by her husband, took her son and ran. A parent’s love for their child, friendship, and even romantic love are all interwoven within the words. Knight explores all aspects of that mysterious force, and shows that love is truly timeless.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. From the characters, to the theme of love, Knight creates a dark, yet tender world that will leave the reader breathless. As such, I would give this book a rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars, and would recommend it to those who enjoy contemporary romance, and the supernatural genres in general.

Audiobook Review…Kristin James is a new to me narrator who I will now look for more from. She took a story I was familiar with, since I had read the book first, and brought it to life. The characters emotions were real, the happenings in the book seemed to be real, and the story was real. Kristin’s voice was easy to listen to and she has a real talent in changing her tone to match what the story was needing. Kathryn Knight wrote an amazing book and Kristin did an amazing job narrating the book.

HAUNTED SOULS is a stand-alone, contemporary romantic suspense with a paranormal element. This is not a series, but Claire and Max from Gull Harbor do return for a couple of chapters!

There were a lot of references to Emily’s friend, Caitlyn. So much so, that I looked to see if one of Ms. Knight’s previous books featured her, but alas it does not appear to be.

I don’t often mention the book covers, because I’m not usually swayed one way or the other by the cover. Let’s face it, on Kindle or Audiobook the cover is rarely noted past the time of purchase. This time I want to just say that it is a perfect representation. It is a lovely collage of the most important elements of the story with an equal balance of dark and light. Kudos to the artist.

I loved this story that balanced the history of mid-eighteenth century America with the present day life on Cape Cod and the lives of three little boys and their mothers…yes three, because Tyler has a schoolmate whose family story is integral to the plot.

So many emotions were brought out, explored, and embraced. From the opening line, Emily’s raw fear and anxieties are evident. Life has beaten her down, until she is the type to faint in fear, but she remains as strong as possible for her little boy. Of course, I was cheering for the man who was a fleeting fling four years ago to become her knight in shining armor. Read it and find out if he did.

I think at this point, I would read a cereal box if it were written by Ms. Kathryn Knight. I look forward to her bringing me more of her audiobooks as they become available.

Narration: The narrator, Kristin James did a wonderful job of bringing each character their own voice. My favorite was her portrayal of Tyler. She does a three and a half year old boy beautifully in all of his mercurial moods.

Note: while I was given this book as a gifted audiobook copy, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

I genuinely thought this would be a paranormal thriller. It’s not good as a paranormal book at all, there isn’t enough information or activity or even scare factor. And as a romance it’s emotionally immature. Both are dealing with deep traumas and open up at a simple request and seem to have little emotional response. The issues are all solved too easily. There’s no mess to make it feel authentic. They open up and are suddenly vastly improved emotionally. Emily wears clothes and is so irresistible that Brett just up and falls in love with her. He forgives her almost purely on the basis that he’s still attracted to her and up to the moment he randomly decides to forgive her is furious about the choices she’s made, adamant that her excuses are just that, excuses. The situation with Emily’s friend felt tossed in as an afterthought to add drama they easily could have had if the book had some real paranormal activity in it.

Original review posted at NDP Book Review

Haunting. Forbidden. Dangerously sexy. Haunted Souls is the perfect balance between saucy and spooky, and contemporary and thrilling. Oooo the deliciousness!

We are first introduced to Emily Shea and her son Tyler. Where is Tyler’s father, you ask? Well, he doesn’t know he’s a father… yet. 😏

(Entering) Conflict #1: Emily must tell her 2 week fling from years ago that he’s a father! Yippee!

"He kept calling her “Em,” too… Very soon he’d be back to calling her “Emily,” she realized with despair. Or perhaps something more along the lines of “You selfish bitch.” Actually, military life had probably taught him much more original derogatory terms, all of which she deserved."

Let me just say that Kathryn Knight is not holding back, here! This story begins arms flailing intersecting the tracks of heartbreak.

Brett is a soldier. A dreamy, hunky, MAN-O-SOLDIER! He is not expecting his one almost-love asking to see him only to tell him he's had a son for the past 3 years. YaaaOK so Emily could have done a little better with the timing. Forgive, and channel your inner Doris Day, Brett! #QueSeraSera

As Emily and Brett muddle along trying to decipher each other and their new parenting roles, their son seems to be taking everything well. Too well, almost. Of course Tyler is taking it well! He is too focused on his imaginary friend to be worried about his parents. Besides, Tyler is all about sharing… and Tyler told his “friend” that they can share his mommy.

Chills.

Tyler’s new friend is, indeed, a ghost. But this ghost - albeit a creepy one - is kind and protective... but that doesn't mean things don't get dangerous! He’s a lost soul latching onto any type of love and affection.

So now we have Conflict #2: Emily must now deal with her son and his imaginary friend they somehow picked up.

Oh and there’s Conflict #3: Emily’s girlfriend is being abused by her husband.

Let’s not forget conflict #4… and #5… and #6… yes, Emily is in quite the conundrum. As one issue closes, another opens.

The most devastating dissension is that Brett doesn’t believe Emily when she tells him about Tyler’s new… err-friend. (Oh no no, Brett. You can’t screw this up now!) On top of all of this, Brett can not help his feelings for Emily as their explosive chemistry returns for round two. Brett may be falling in love with Emily, but how is she going to convince him to believe her? Love and trust are two very different things. How are they going to get rid of this ghost who’s become attached to their son? How is Emily going to help her girlfriend on top of her own issues?

Emily isn’t the only one with issues, though. Brett has demons he is harboring from the war. Haunted by nightmares consisting of his friends dying in front of him, he becomes violent in his sleep. He refuses to sleep near Emily and Tyler for their safety, and he also refuses to tell them why (which causes an entirely new string of conflict).

"A normal relationship would never be a possibility. At the very least, his screams would continuously deprive anyone near him of regular sleep…"

Emily, Brett, Tyler, Tyler’s “friend,” Emily’s friend… they’re all haunted in different ways and trying to find liberty. Unfortunately, fate wants Emily to suffer the most in this process, and all of these conflicts merge and apex on top of her.

Friends. FRIENDS. This book is incredible and it has a beautiful undercurrent of tension and desire. Through the constant undulations, Emily’s character transitions from a state of fear, to empowerment. Brett parallels this transition and goes from doubt to trust. Kathryn Knight presents us with layer upon layer of delicious tension, and this ghost ends up being a catalyst to everyone finding happiness.

Honestly, I was expecting exorcisms, demonic possessions, and military ghosts… *snort* don’t judge me. I got something so completely different and satisfying! This ghost-friend of Tyler's isn’t violent, or mean (even though he causes a lot of problems), but he seeks love, and this spirit inevitably and involuntarily helps everyone find absolution. Kathryn is tasteful in her portrayal of every character, the writing is immaculate and elegant, and OOOOO gaaawd this is one heck of a steamy romance!

Undeniable tension, and resolve. Haunted Souls emanates everything a ★★★★★ read should be!

I wouldn’t mind having a ghost follow me around if he helped me find love. Oh-la-la! Kathryn Knight, draft me up one of those! 👻

What do a single mother, a soldier with PTSD, an adorably precocious toddler and an 18th century ghost have in common? They are all amazing characters featured in this sexy, yet suspenseful romance.

Honestly, I was a bit hesitant to read this book at first. I don’t do ghosts! Horror ain’t my thing ladies and gentleman. However, I am happy to report that this novel is in no way classified as horror. Our ghost is actually rather friendly! Not exactly Casper friendly, but he gets on really well with Brett and Emily’s son, Tyler.

Let’s start our discussion with less ghostly endeavors, and focus instead on the romance side of things. Brett has returned home to the States after an incredibly difficult tour in-country to suddenly discover he is the father of a young boy. He initially seems intent to regard Emily with hatred and disdain for keeping the existence of his son a secret for so long. The closer he gets to his son though, the more he realizes that there’s an undeniable attraction between him and Emily that can’t be ignored anymore.

Hot damn these two are smokin’ hot! They only had a two week affair years before, and are hesitant to start anything up again with the added complication of their son in the picture. Not to mention Brett’s PTSD, which was handled with absolute perfection by the author. But good God they can’t keep their hands off each other! Their love scenes are filled to the brim with heat, passion, tenderness, and a bit of neck nibbling. My favorite!

Now for the ghostly factor. I was surprised at how much I actually enjoyed this feature of the novel! Our 12 year old ghost, Josiah, died all alone in a jail cell in 1757, and throughout the book we slowly uncover his sad and tragic story. It actually ties in rather well with the rest of the story to show how strong family connection can be. At first, Brett doesn’t believe there’s a ghost who seems linked to his son, but as the novel progresses we see how the family bonds and becomes closer because of this ghostly apparition.

That being said, I think the fact that Josiah was so friendly and non-threatening meant that at times he was almost pushed to the side in order to focus on another story line. For example, Emily is also trying to help her friend escape an abusive marriage, and although Josiah plays an important role at one point during this story, it was kind of hard to see how all the stories blended together evenly. Overall though, I really enjoyed the ghostly aspect of this novel, and wouldn’t give it up! I would have liked to hear some kind of speech from Josiah at some point in the novel, as we don’t hear the majority of the conversations he has with Tyler. I guess I just wanted more from him!

Haunted Souls by Kathryn Knight This book dragged me in on page one and didn't let me go until the final period on the last page. I had a hard time putting this book down. There was a couple of spots where I did skim over a few paragraphs that got a little long winded but other then that I loved this book. I am all about paranormal reads, and ghosts just happen to be my favorite. I am not a huge romance reader and this book does center a lot of romance, I am impressed it kept my attention so well.

In the book Emily and Brett met 4 years ago and had a whirlwind 2 week affair. Both agreed it would be no strings attached. Brett was headed to the Air Force to be a EOD Tech and Emily was headed back to college to finish her senior year and become a vet. Neither one wanted to admit they had begun to have feelings for each other so at the end of the 2 weeks they parted without looking back. Until a few months later when Emily finds out she is pregnant. She knows that her and Brett's parting was the end, and that his schooling and training in the Air Force was all he could handle at the time so she decides not to tell him about the baby.

Now 4 years later Brett is back in town and Emily has Tyler their son now 3 1/2 years old. She knows she has to tell him now before he finds out on his own. Brett steps right into his role as a father, and Emily and him do their best to keep their feelings to themselves for each other which are still in place even after the 4 year separation. Both also have their own demons to battle with. Emily has lost everyone who has ever been close to her and Brett has PTSD from his years of deployment. There's also a new presence in their life in the form of a 12 year old boy ghost who died over 300 years ago that Tyler picks up as a friend from a ghost tour and invites to come home with him. Brett who at first does not believe in ghosts tries to help Emily with the haunting, and in the mean time their feelings grow stronger for each other. Can they fight their demons, rid themselves of the haunting, and become a family?

There are a few sex scenes in the book, some violence, but very few and very light cuss words in the book. Katherine Knight has done an amazing job with this story. The book is filled with feelings that grab you by the heartstrings. Like I said I am amazed at how well this romance help my attention.

I’m not sure if I truly believe in ghosts, the paranormal world; however, I admit stories concerning experiences with the other side fascinate me. Maybe I am like so many others in the world; I get a slight thrill out of being frightened regarding the possibility death isn’t the end for us all. In any rate, ghosts were real for Tyler, Emily and Brett. One lonely ghost, Josiah, made contact with Tyler during a trip to the Old Jailhouse in Cape Cod. Through Josiah’s journey to be reunited with his “lost” mother, we get firsthand knowledge of the hardships faced in the 1700’s. Poor Josiah, his story was just as touching as Brett’s backstory and his was extremely moving.

Many soldiers battle PTSD every day and live in fear of hurting the ones around them. Their battle aboard might be over but the internal war rages on. For Brett, he was not only facing life out of the combat zone but he was acclimating to the fact he had a son. I’m impressed how well Kathryn depicted the struggle for a soldier to keep the wartime demons at bay while rejoining life on US soil.

Now, though PTSD and ghosts are sensitive subjects, Kathryn didn’t falter on the sensual moments. As Brett integrated himself into his son’s life, and as Josiah moved closer to his reunion with his mom, Brett and Emily couldn’t deny the fire between them never burnt out. As a parent, I can remember those days when the kid is finally asleep and mom/dad hustle to spend some alone time together. *wink wink*

As you can see, I thoroughly loved Haunted Souls. It touched on a multitude of emotions: fear (as a parent), fear (as a soldier), love, sorrow, and joy. It was a beautiful story about being reunited with a loved one and achieving internal peace. HEA!

Love, distrust, family, ghosts… just a few topics Haunted Souls touches on. Emily and Brett had a fling 4 years ago. They decided to end the fling due to his deployment. What neither realized was Emily was pregnant. Fast forward, Emily is a single mother of a son named Tyler. Brett’s deployment is over and he finds out he is a father. Tyler makes a friend with ghost name Josiah. There’s hurt, angry, and fear. Can the 3 (technically 4) save each other?

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but what I can say… I truly enjoyed the story I got! It was difficult to walk away from this story. Both Brett and Emily showed such a vulnerability which made you feel for them and root for them. You completely understood their feelings toward each other and the emotions they were dealing with. Their relationship was complicated, yet had an ease to it which made you want to grab one of them (and at times grab the other) and give them a little shake. While this was a GREAT second chance romance, this was also a really good ghost story. I was slightly surprised with myself that I enjoyed this aspect of the story. I, generally, don’t like horror, but this element added to the story and showed me different sides of this story and the romance.

Kathryn Knight’s writing isn’t overly complicated, yet it isn’t simplistic by any means. She can write and twisted, yet beautiful story of love and forgiveness, you’ll feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. I recommend Haunted Souls to anyone who loves complexed and damaged characters who you’ll love.

Kathryn Knight is a new to me author and I’m so thrilled to have read her book, Haunted Souls.  It’s a military second chance romance with paranormal elements. It’s nothing I’ve ever read before and I loved it!

I really connected with the main characters, Emily and Brett.  They are working out co-parenting and slowly easing Brett into Tyler’s life after he returns from military service.  You get both POVs, so you can understand where their logic, emotions and actions come from. I feel that the characters are not without flaws, which makes them realistic and relatable.  The emotions are not forced or rushed, and instead, grow.

The mystery surrounding Tyler’s new ghostly friend, Josiah Matthews, is an interesting aspect of the story.  Josiah is lost and confused and is looking for his mother. You learn more about Josiah’s story throughout the book when Emily does research and also bring in a medium.

There’s also drama surrounding one of the Ty’s class/playmate’s mother, Gayle.  Gayle is in an abusive marriage, which I found heartbreaking and sad to read about a character going through something like that.  Emily is trying to help her out, then becomes Joe’s target.

I really enjoyed Kathryn’s writing and the amazing story.  There’s a little bit of everything from steamy romance to paranormal mystery.  Also, well developed characters and story line with no plot holes. Everyone finds closure at the end, so there’s no cliffhanger.  Fantastic read!

Oh my gosh!! This book Haunted Souls by Kathryn Knight was oh so good and so scary at times. I loved listening to it. Emily and Brett had so much heat and chemistry in their brief time together that it produced a child that Brett had no idea about for several years. Brett was in the military and had served 2 overseas tours that ended in him coming home after a devastating accident. Emily was a single mom to Tyler and she finally called Brett to tell him about Tyler. To say he was angry, was the understatement of the year. They had a very rocky reunion.

Emily and her friend Gail had both taken their sons on a haunted ghost tour of the jail house in their town. Gail had to leave early and so it was just Emily and Tyler. It seems that Tyler made a "friend" in a ghost named Josiah and that is where problems started to arise in their home. To top it off, Brett didn't believe Emily and he was still having a hard time trying to forgive her for not telling him about their son.

The title of the book is so good, because it seems like every main character in the book really has a haunted soul. There were parts that I cried at, got scared at and even had to fan myself from the steamy parts between Brett and Emily. I received an ARC of this audio book in exchange for an honest opinion. I absolutely loved it. This is the second book I have listened to on audio book. Give this book a try, it will make you believing in second chances and maybe even ghosts!

Emily Shea is a single mom bringing up her sin Tyler. Brett Leeds has come back from a tour of duty and enters Emily's life not knowing he is Tylers dad. Tyler however has a new friend, a ghost called Josiah.

This book appealed to me for several reason. Firstly I would have picked up this book for it's cover. I was drawn to the ghostly theme and how a little boy is haunted and thought it could kick start my Halloween reading.

This book started of great and I was enjoying it. It reminded me of some Heather Graham books that I've read in the past. Nice easy reading not too taxing. I liked the mix of a romance and a ghostly element to the story.

It didn't take too long for me to start getting frustrated. There's a little boy who has a ghost friend, who obviously needs help. Emily however does come over as concerned and does involve a meduim but all she seems interested in is when is she next going to have sex. I know its a romance but there is just too much sex. I would have preferred the book to have been more on the paranormal side.

I haven't read anything by this author before so dont know her style or genre. If her other works are like this then I can easily leave them alone. It wasn't a bad read I think I was expecting something a bit more than what it was.

Than you to the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book via Netgalley.

I love romance books, but when paired with a good ghost story, it's like gold. Kathryn Knight has combined a little history, a little paranormal, some real life issues and a second chance at romance and given us just that! Emily and Brett met four years earlier and hit it off. Brett leaves for his training and now back has the surprise of his life. Tyler, their son is a smart, intuitive child who has brought home a spirit from a local history tour. Mix in some PTSD and domestic violence and we have a great story. I love Emily, her character is full of passion, loves fiercely and will do anything to help her friend. Brett is a strong, alpha type make who has a loyalty and love like no other. But will they be able to overcome the obstacles in their way to find their happiness? I think my favorite character is Josiah and his story. Knight surrounds suspense around the 12 year old spirit and Tyler with great visuals of his life. The melding of all the stories together flowed with ease and had me wanting to listen straight through. It's a great story!

Narrated by Kristen James, the story is brought to life with such wonderful voicing, it's impossible to put it down. She is a great storyteller and gave each character it's own voice and personality. She is a talent not to be missed.

I was gifted a free copy of this novel by the author in return for an honest review.

Somehow, interwoven with the ghost story and creepy vibe, this book still came across as sweet and astoundingly wholesome. Emily and Brett ARE a good couple, even if they struggle to realize it. Their love for not only their son, but each other shines through – even from the first few chapters. When the realization of what followed Tyler home rocks through them (They originally think it’s an imaginary friend… because honestly, what parent wouldn’t?) it taunts them, shakes them and challenges the fledgling tendrils of what they are trying to build.

Perspective:
Third Person, Multiple POV

Ending type:
HEA (Happily Ever After – Stand alone novel.)

pros:
~Sweet – the kind of story that will make you smile in the end.
~The support Emily shows. She is a struggling young mother who is doing the best she can.
~PTSD: Though I do not have personal experience with this, it was nice to see the portrayal here, and the feelings that come with it.
~Tyler: I have kids – I LOVED this little 3 year old.
~There is substance, over 300 pages.

Cons:
~Narrative feels a bit choppy in places.
~The scenes do not flow smoothly.
~The plot and theme feel familiar to other paranormal novels.

I offered to review this audiobook because I am such an an avid reader but also almost exclusively audio due to my schedule. Because of this, and the fact that a bad narrator can destroy a great series, I can be very critical of narrators. Especially when books have a single narrator required to speak with different voices for multiple characters. Most cannot do it without having some errors where they use the wrong 'voice' for the wrong character. Kristin James does a great job in narrating this book! It was a very enjoyable listen and I didn't have any issues distinguishing between characters.

As to the story, I am not one to give a lot of specific story details since I feel you should read the story for that, and Haunted Souls will not disappoint! The story was well done and the author did a great job of not over dramatizing the ghost in their mist. If you enjoy the paranormal, you will enjoy this story. If you enjoy a good romance, you will enjoy this story. The book includes interesting characters, lots of twists and turns in the main story, and several good underlying stories within that will make you want to keep listening until the story is over.

I received a free review copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Emily and Brett were once an item, but Brett leaves Emily alone to go for training. Emily searches for Brett, but comes up short and must raise Tyler alone. Brett returns to the surprise that will change his life. During a tour to a local historic prison, Tyler meets a friend, Josiah. Bringing Josiah home with him, Tyler promises to share his mom. Emily thinks Tyler has an imaginary friend until things start to go bump in the night. Kathryn Knight has a way with twisting so many lives into one story and bringing together the spiritual and physical worlds. Haunted Souls is a haunting tale of how different things were in the past, yet how strong the love between a mother and child is. There are so many characters, each with their own issues that weave together this story of love, trust and second chances. I cannot wait for another story by Kathryn Knight,

Kristin James brings this haunting tale to life. Her ability to narrate the intense, haunting drama as it unfolded, made me have goosebumps. Ms. James ability to keep all the characters distinct really helped with the ease of following the story. The suspenseful scenes kept me on the edge of my seat as Ms. James narrated. I hope to hear more from Kristin James.

This is the second book in the Series. I love this story. I love Emily. She's kind and caring. Brett is full of anguish and anger (and suffer from PTSD), but he learns to open himself to Emily. He's protective with Emily and their son, Tyler. The story is very well written and the storyline is suspenseful, intriguing and captivating from the first page to the end. The twists and turns added interest to the story. Children's Imaginary friends always scare me! And Tyler's imaginary friend also scared me. I love how Emily and Brett learn to trust each other and I love their second chance love story. I loved to see Claire and Max from Gull Harbor, even though it was a short appareance. I like interconnected characters. The narration was great, with all these characters and easy to listen. I'm looking forward to listen to more books written by Kathryn Knight and narrated by Kristin James. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

This is the first book I have read by this author and it will not be my last.

Emily and Brett meet over the Christmas holidays. The chemistry is so strong that these two spend the next couple of weeks together. When it was time for Brett to leave for the EOD school for the Air Force, him and Emily agree to part without any strings attached.

After Brett is deployed to Afghanistan, Emily finds out she is pregnant but decides to raise the child on her own without involving Brett.

Three and a half years later, Brett returns home and learns he has a son. Will he stay and try to be to reconcile with his family, or will he bail?

The book has so many plot twists it leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat. The dialogue is witty, suspenseful, and at times outlandishly funny. Ms. Knight writes very drawn characters and it’s clear as to the roles they play. Thank you Ms. Knight for writing a book with all the “feels.”

5 glorious stars.

Wow!! What a stunningly written story. Haunted Souls is an incredibly captivating and unforgettable second chance romance with supernatural elements. The storyline is compelling, engaging, and beautifully written, depicting an uncertain relationship and the bond of family, with a ghost in the center of it all. The characters are complex, flawed, and positively authentic. I could easily sympathize with both the characters' struggles while relating to their emotions of guilt and wariness.

The narration by Kristin James is excellent. She portrayed the characters' personalities and moods very nicely, bringing them to life. Overall, this was a very enjoyable listen, one I strongly recommend. I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

This story made me ache as these two tried to work things out. The pain of not knowing he had a son for 4 years devastated Brett. Emily knew she was a bad person by not telling him, but in her own right she did try. It seemed fate was against them. When Brett came back to town 4 years later, she braved the truth instead of lying to him. There was always something deep between these two, but circumstances and ambitions drove them apart. This story has a Gothic feel to it with the ghosts added in, but that is what will drive these two to rethink their relationship. This story is well developed and emotional. It made me think about some of my choices in life. How different my life would be if I made different choices.

3.5 stars, rounded down.

Honestly, the title of this is pretty misleading. I wouldn't say it's a ghost story so much as a romance with a small paranormal side narrative, one that isn't even all that spooky. The writing was sometimes clichéd and the artificially manufactured tension between the two love interests (just TALK TO EACH OTHER ffs) hella annoying, but I get you need tension to keep the plot going.

I liked the feel-good ending, though. The book didn't feel like a complete waste of time so much as a mild disappointment when it wasn't as scary as I'd hoped; hell, the little ghost boy felt like an afterthought most of the time. But it was okay... a solid second-chance heteronormative romance for those who are into that.

Captivating, intense, wonderful!

Emily feels like she is finally getting in a routine for single parenthood when he sons father moves back to town perminately and turns her world upside down. Will they be able to move through the twists and turns of life for their 4 year old son?

I loved this story. Author Kathryn Knight did a wonderful job capturing my attention, creating relatable and loveable characters, having a plot with many twists and turns plus she tugged at my heartstrings for Emily, Brett and Tyler.

I listened to this in audiobook form. The narrator Kristin (KJ) James is the best narrator I have ever heard.

I highly recommend this 5 star read
