Kate's Case Files #2

Kate's Capitol

Rate this book
Do the small compromises we make daily really hurt anyone or matter to God?
Kate’s first case as an FBI agent is nothing like she expected. Posing as an intern at the Texas Capitol, she finds herself spending more time behind the computer than she does figuring out the case. Is Representative Jason Ashbury guilty of a third degree felony or is one of his staff to blame? And how is she supposed to handle the effect Patrick has on her?
Patrick was looking forward to guiding Kate through her first case, instead he was assigned to Ashbruy’s home office in Tyler. He cannot figure out either the case or his relationship to Kate. Are Ashbury’s dedicated employees covering for him, or the instigators? Will Kate ever let him be her friend, or will she continue to push him away?

This book is a story that has a lot of fact along with fiction. The setting is a place I worked, the case is based on a news story, and the message is one that God has been teaching me.

Kate and Patrick are back for another adventure.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Kate's Innocence, I really looked forward to Kate's Capitol. I was not disappointed! The flow of it was perfect. Never did it seem to drag or leave me clueless as to what was going on.

I really appreciated the theme of this book, about following God in even the small aspects of life. This one is without a doubt a strong Christian-themed book.

The romance was slightly disappointing to me. It's not that I don't like romance in books; it just seemed to move very quickly from the last book. And, okay... so maybe it is because I don't like a ton of romance in books. ;) I just want Patrick and Kate to stay friends a little longer and not go through a whole back-and-forth "she likes me, she likes me not" ordeal. Yeah, that's just me. ;)

If you've read Kate's Innocence, this is a great followup.
If you haven't read Kate's Innocence, you now have two books to put on your TBR pile. ;)

2018 Reread
If you re-read the first book, you gotta re-read the second one too. ;) I'm even more hyped for the rest of this series now! <3 I'm really excited to see how the author develops Kate dealing with her past, and I can't wait to spend more time with these great characters. Also, I had forgotten TJ's nickname, so that was fun to remember. XD

Original Review
Well, it didn’t take me long to devour the second book. ;) It seems like when I need a light but satisfying read, I always pick up something by this author…

I don’t know if I’ve ever read a sequel so different from the first book but so lovable in its own right. This one was less exciting and a lot slower in some ways, and I figured out parts of the mystery pretty early on, but it was still so neat to see them build a solid case. And they were UNDERCOVER! <3 *grins hugely and happily* (Kim was so funny pushing her Asian accent…)

I liked all the “snooping”, the GPS tracking stuff, and when . ;) The party was extra fun too, and I thought it was hilarious and adorable how Patrick and Kate had to pretend not to know each other. ;) (Can we talk about how accidentally cute their emails are?)

I’ll admit I was pretty sad when I found out who the villain was, but the overall spiritual message (and slight warning, even) of the book was really good. (Also, it was really neat to see who was the one to give them the tip. Don’t judge books by their covers!!)

Just a note that the main character is in which got pretty intense and a little disturbing.

Best quote: Patrick nodded. “You did remember to get the security videos shut off, didn’t you?” “Yes, Mum,” Thomas said sarcastically, as he bent over Laura’s locked door.

Altogether, this was a great sequel, and I’m impatiently waiting for the third book. :D

The second installment of Kate's Case Files, and I loved how different it was from the first in the series! The same characters were the stars, but the plot was definitely switched up with all sorts of political and non-political intrigue.

Characters: Kate is a fun narrator - she definitely has some shadows in her past that need to be dealt with, but she's also very much in the moment and cool under pressure. Watching her learn and grow through her work was also interesting. Patrick is a good quarry for her - he definitely isn't shy to call her out when she's not doing the brightest thing in the world. He did seem a bit pushy in this one in the romance department, but by the end of the book, he'd realized his mistakes and backed off. As for the rest of the characters, the team was great to see again - each one of them has such a great personality and make such good additions to the group.

Writing/Plots: I blazed through this book when I read it, and the simple yet lovely writing style definitely contributed to that! The author's style really fit this type of book. As for the plot, I found the world of politics interesting. The case was more low-key than a lot of other suspense books - not a death threat on every single page -but things definitely got tight there at the end. Overall, really well-paced and full of character development when things were filled with suspense.

Theme: A big thread throughout this book was being faithful even in the small things of life. One small surrender on something could change everything and could lead to much larger compromises. That's a scary but important truth to realize, and this book really drove that home! Patrick also tends to try to do everything in his own strength, which is a good reminder of all of us that we can't do anything in our own power. Only God can enable us to do as He's called us to.

As another great addition to Kate's Case Files, this book is a great read focusing on political intrigue, suspense, and truth-filled themes!

Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

After reading the first book in this series, I was eagerly looking forward to reading the second. I was not disappointed! I read it in one afternoon and enjoyed it all. I loved getting to reconnect with Kate, Patrick and all the other characters. And, though this wasn't an "exciting" case (with guns, bombs and such), it was still very interesting, had it's tense moments and came to a satisfying end.
I hope Sarah Holman writes more stories in this series.

5 stars & 5/10 hearts. I was a little apprehensive about reading this, fearful that it might not live up to the standard of book 1. But I was so pleasantly surprised! It was so similar to Kate's Innocence in setup, yet so different in execution!

The setting was really fascinatingly unique. I have never read anything set in politics before, and it was super cool to have an inside glimpse into the Texas Capitol. The new cast of characters was also delightful. I liked Mia and even Emily, Steve, & Laura—in spite of themselves—and I loved Jason. The FBI team were even more epic than in the first book, and was fun to learn more about Kate especially but also the rest of the team. And the villains were so interesting—I couldn’t help feeling so sorry for them.

The plot was really fun. Like in the first book, I couldn’t pin down who was the bad guy for forever—and when Patrick finally told me, I was properly shocked. The climax was totally unexpected but also super cool, and the ending was perfect. While I didn’t like Patrick playing at the flirt and causing Kate to have a hard time, I loved that he apologized. And while I wish he would quit disobeying or defying Thomas, the relationship between everyone is epic, and I enjoyed seeing Patrick & Kate move a little forwards in their romance. And the banter/humour was just as good as in book 1.

Like in the first book, again, the author packed a real punch with the message. In two short passages she perfectly explained the humungous cost of compromises and how to avoid them. I also appreciated the small message about what the FBI is really like and how certain cases are just not black and white.

Overall, this was the perfect sequel, a fantastic addition to the Kate’s Case Files, and an excellent hook for the next book. :D

Content: an unmarried couple shares a kiss; ; mention that Thomas has “lady friends” waiting for him at home and changes them frequently.

A Favourite Quote: ““Like I said before, we all make countless decisions a day. How many times do we stop and ask what God would have us to do? How often do we think about the far-reaching consequences of those choices? … Someone doesn’t go from being clean to a drug addict after one decision, it takes several. We don’t go from having good boundaries to having affairs in one choice. We don’t go from being a truthful person to a habitual liar with one lie. It all starts out as one choice, one little compromise. This case was a good reminder of that fact. They even had good motives, but the results were wrong.”
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “It was much easier to snoop when you weren’t trying to look like you weren’t snooping.”

I enjoyed this book just as much as the first one! It's been quite a while since I read Kate's Innocence, and I probably should have reread it first because I had forgotten some things, but most of it came back to me as I read.
I loved the characters just as much as last time! Patrick and Kate were just as good and the character building is very well done. I liked Brian much more this time, although we didn't get to see that much of him, and Logan and Kim were so sweet. Thomas wasn't in that much either, but I still like him. I love how different each character is from the other, and how well they all work together.
The mystery was so good, although it was quite sad. I loved seeing the team undercover and also seeing Kate do her first real bit of detecting!
Kate's backstory has me very curious, and I'm rooting for Patrick to get through to her and help her get past it! She irritated me a bit in the beginning, with the way she treated him, but obviously this is only a part of her character arc which so far is being done so well.
Really, I think what I loved most about this book was the writing style itself. I noticed it in the first book, and I was even more struck with it this time. The author writes so well that I can picture each scene as clearly as if it was happening in front of me. And once I started reading, I could hardly stop. In fact, I read the second half of the book in one sitting, and the first half didn't take many more. I just couldn't put it down! And the climax was so well done. I loved Patrick in that scene! And the scenes in the hospital made me laugh. Everything was so well written that I just wanted to keep reading! Which is why I'm going straight on to Book 3...

Note: I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Couldn't stop reading it! I loved Kate’s Capitol! Having read the first book in the series, Kate’s Innocence, I was excited to be able to read the second. In this story, Kate is now an FBI agent, working with a team to discover the truth behind claims surrounding Rep. Ashbury in the Texas Capitol, Austen. Can Kate keep up the façade of an intern long enough to glean the information they need? When Patrick shows her special attention, will she be okay with that, or want to keep her distance? With love and political intrigue combined, this is a great story. A truly capital experience.

(Note: I read a pre-release copy of this book.)

I'm to a mystery-loving person. In fact, I rarely read, or am even interested in mysteries. But I thoroughly enjoyed Kate's Cas Files #1 and wanted to give the rest of the series a shot.

Once again, it was a fast-paced book that kept me completely hooked. I enjoyed seeing all the characters again, even though the team definitely wasn't as much the focus as in book 1.

As someone who is loves justice and is nit-picky about the detail, I loved how the villains were portrayed differently than book 1. Not all villains/bad guys are the cookie cutter bad guys we expect, and I appreciated the author showing that.

My one complaint was that the end came incredibly fast and I felt like the last three chapters could have been explained better? But besides that it a read that is very entertaining/distracting.

Another thoroughly enjoyable mystery story from Sarah Holman!

In a way, Kate’s Capitol was quite different than the first one. Kate’s Innocence (book 1) had a lot of action and peril; this one has more of a political/office/spy sort of feel, so there was still tension, just of a slightly less life-threatening sort for most of the book. It was interesting watching the FBI team tracking trails of paperwork etc. This one is somewhat tense but not as high-stakes as the first book, so they feel rather different, although it got exciting and perilous at the end there for a bit—eep!

Overall it was a good modern mystery/thriller. Even the office parts, of which there were many, kept me absorbed, even if you’d think they wouldn’t be as interesting. But it seemed very authentic and well-researched; I felt like I was in the Austin capitol building and other settings. The attention to detail was fabulous! (I know the author worked there for awhile, and it shows; I was totally pulled into the place!)

This novel was a quick read, which I absorbed in an afternoon, and was fast-paced and enjoyable. I felt like I was watching a TV show, actually. :D As if each book is like an episode (or maybe a pair of episodes), self-contained with full storylines, but with a few ongoing threads continuing from book to book—what’s in Kate’s past that she doesn’t like to think about? Are Kate and Patrick ever going to realize they’re perfect for each other? Is Thomas going to have a character arc? Etc. I really liked this feeling. :D

I love this cast of characters, this close-knit team of FBI agents who are friends, and have enjoyed getting to know them. :) Brian, Logan, and Kim seem more side-character-ish, with not as much focus on them, though they are still lovable, while it’s mostly about Kate and Patrick (I really like him!) and maybe a bit about Thomas sometimes—perhaps because he’s the superior who’s kind of in the shadows and not around as much; I’m curious to learn more about him. They all have a very well-drawn individual “feel” to their characters, like people I know, and I’m extremely fond of them. ^_^

I thought I was going to be sad that Kate and Patrick were working separately for a lot of the story, but I actually ended up loving it! It was super fun to go back and forth in their POVs and see them working separate angles of the case, and talking through email or phone calls—it was unique and fun and upped the tension sometimes. :) I love their story and so enjoy reading about them.

At first I was disappointed in some of the ending, until I recognized the point of it ending that way, realizing it illustrated a moral point, so I decided I was okay with it. It had some good Christian themes and thoughts as well. :)

For readers who enjoy clean Christian fiction with an FBI twist and a light dash of possible-romance—or even just an enjoyable mystery-type read, well-written and with a fun cast of characters—I highly recommend these books!

I’ve so enjoyed these first two books in the Kate’s Case Files series, and I look forward to more adventures with this team! :)

FAVORITE QUOTES

It was much easier to snoop when you weren’t trying to look like you weren’t snooping.

***

“Like there is more to life then solving crimes and catching the bad guy.”

Patrick lifted his head. “Such as?”

“Tsk, tsk, you are a sad man, Patrick Connor."

***

“One day, we are sitting in the office, getting ready for the work day.”

“I think you were making paper airplanes out of your reports,” Brian interjected.

***

Thomas tried to push in after her, but Patrick held him back. “You flashed your badge at that poor nurse, didn’t you?”

Thomas grinned. “It saves a lot of time and paperwork.”

Patrick shook his head. “I think that you could charm your way into the White House without an ID.”

“Why do you think they made me boss?” Thomas said, entering the room.

I enjoyed getting the chance to read this next book in the Kate Files series. It was great following up with the characters and getting to know them more.
Though I've never been much into political things, I found this book's plot interesting and engaging.
Though I think that the 'who-dunnit' was a little...underdeveloped/obvious. When it came to figuring out who the "bad guy" was, there was a big deal made about who it should be that I was expecting that it just had to be someone else, because who it was just seemed too obvious and pointed out.
But otherwise, it was a good story. :)
Like I said, getting to know Kate more was great, and same with the other characters. I think I still enjoyed Logan the most. :)
The message was good too, and seeing Kate's journey of faith continuing is great.
Looking forward to more books in the series!

There were quite a lot of spelling/grammatical errors and a double-chapter, but I was reading a pre-copy so I know the final version will be clearer. :)

A fun read! I can't decide if I liked this better than the first one or not. It was nice to be reunited with all the characters again-Kate, Patrick, Logan, Thomas, and many new ones!

What I liked a lot about this was all the mystery surrounding the capitol building. You can really tell the author knows her stuff. I didn't understand all the government details, but what I did understand was interesting.

I love the spiritual lessons of no compromise and how easily the author wove it through the story. One compromise after another may eventually lead to something we would have never imagined doing in the past!

There were a couple things I didn't like...Kate was a little annoying with how she wanted to pull herself away from Patrick. I was glad she was warming up a bit more toward the end. Also, I think the bad guy could have been a little less obvious, but that's just my opinion :) The term "double-dipping" was used so much!!

This is a worth while read. I would be very happy to read another in this series!

My Review
Genre: Fiction.
My Rating: 5 Stars.
Recommendation: Anyone over 13 because of slight violence.
My favorite character/s: Kate is more closed off from others than in the first book. I like Kate and feel bad for her as she struggles with her fears.
My Verse for Kate is Proverbs 15:13
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. King James Version.
Patrick is just as determined in this book to be Kate’s friend as in the first book when he was trying to prove that Kate was innocent, now he’s trying to break down the walls that Kate built around her heart.
My Verse for Patrick is Jeremiah 10:24
O Lord, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing. King James Version.

My Thoughts: I don’t normally read books that have anything to do with politics which made Kate’s Capitol not only interesting, but it also showed some of what goes into politics.

P.S. Brian is in the running for favorite character, so we’ll see if Patrick is a favorite in my review of Kate’s Dilemma!

I really enjoyed the first book in this series by the name of Kate's Innocence, so I was excited to read of Kate and Patrick's next adventure, set in Texas.

What I Liked: It was nice to catch up with Patrick and Kate along with the other agents in this book. I loved all their comradeship as they worked on the case. There were several points where the clean humor made me smile and chuckle a bit. It broke up the serious nature of the book very well.

While it took a little bit for the story to wind up to the climax, once it got there, you didn't know what was going to happen next and there were a few twists I definitely did not see coming. I did not mind the slower start, though; I kind of liked it actually. Sarah Holman pulled this story off very well.

The message of the damage that even small compromises in our lives can make was very clearly made in this story and I found myself encouraged in my walk with the Lord. I loved Patrick in this story. His strong faith is quite inspiring and the way he treats Kate, even when she doesn't necessarily want his help, is very sweet and caring. He might've been my favorite character in this story, though I liked Kate, as well. I also enjoyed the other FBI agents, Logan, Kim, Brian, and even Thomas.

What I Didn't Like: Nothing comes to mind of anything I didn't like.

I give this book 5 stars for an enjoyable story that is filled with a godly message, encouragement to grow in one's faith, and for an exciting mystery!

I am really enjoying this series! If there is one thing I love it is stories that feature the FBI (so much that I even wrote one myself!) and Kate's Case files is such a fun and unique take on the FBI. I absolutely love this fabulous (and hilarious!) ensemble cast of characters, I especially get a kick out of Logan and all her fun little quirks! It was neat that the majority of this book took place in and around the Texas State Capitol, the author described the surroundings and atmosphere so well that I felt as though I was really there.
I also loved the suspense in the last few chapters!
The message about honoring God with our choices even when it comes to the seemingly little things, was fabulous, and it was a reminder that greatly touched my heart.
Overall, Kate's Capitol kept me engaged from start to finish, I highly recommend it, and am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

I love Kate's Capitol just as much as the first book in the Kate's Case Files series -- maybe even a little better.

Kate's Capitol has political suspense and FBI intrigue. I found it to be a fun book, with a lot of interesting angles in the plot. It's Kate's first case as an FBI agent now. She and the rest of the team are taking on undercover roles at the Texas Capitol to investigate who is stealing extra money from Representative Jason Ashbury's campaign. Surely it's not Ashbury himself?

What do I like about it? The FBI agents fit together like a real team. They work together on heavy cases, play around with each other, and learn from each other. Kate is starting to fit right in at her new job. It's always good to see growth and change in your favorite literary characters (emotionally, spiritually, etc.), and Sarah Holman is pulling it off well in this series.

It's a clean read, with some hints of romance. What I like about Sarah Holman's books is that you'll always know that there won't be foul language or immoral situations in her writing, but there's always an inspirational, spirit-filled message.

Overall, I'm comfortable with sharing this series with any adult friends or teenagers. I definitely like the direction that this series is geared toward and will be excited to see more of this series in the future.

Another 48 hour read! Why didn't I read this series sooner? It's just powerful, plain and simple.

I was so happy to find that this book picked up shortly after the first. There wasn't even that awkward transition that you normally have between books in a series. The dynamics were a little different of course, but the heart prevailed.

I have to say my favorite thing about this series is the characters. They are so well rounded and play off each other incredibly well! And I know their fictional, but after spending a week in their lives, I feel like they're my friends. :)

Well done, Sarah! I cried when I read the Note from the Author at the end. I wish I could give you a great big hug. Thank you for sharing your heart with us through this series. <3

This book kept me interested from start to finish - much like it's predessor, but so much more in depth. There was a little normal attraction - but it wasn't inappropriate - more of taking control of their thought life. I learned so much about Washington politics & tunnels. Such intrigue! My preteen & teen daughters were eager to read it too!!

Really enjoyed getting back with the team again! I'm not entirely sure how I fell for this group of characters so hard, but I really, really love them! <3 Although I was a bit confused by Kate's feelings at the beginning--umm, did you really think you could take this job and not be constantly interacting with Patrick? But I did sort of understand her wanting to put up walls, even though I'm not entirely sure of everything that's behind them, and I'm really rooting for her to continue letting her guard down.

The way the mystery was written really made it feel like we were in the throes of an actual investigation. Like an actual, boring, when-are-we-going-to-find-something-out investigation. NOT to say the story was boring in the slightest. That sounds confusing. Not sure I can explain, but I'll try. I just kept waiting for certain meetings or incidents or contacts to bear fruit, only to have nothing happen with that particular piece--but there was still so much going on and so much tension and pressure to find the piece of evidence that WOULD bear fruit that the story itself wasn't boring and pointless. Also, the team was dealing with the same we're-finding-nothing-and-this-is-so-frustrating struggles, so I felt like I was right along with them. Still confused? It was realistic but not boring. Just trust me on that. ;)

I was kind of saddened by the way the investigation ended up...which was sort of the point, I know. :( I did like the way Kate's confidence in herself has grown and the way she's slowly letting Patrick past little bits of her defenses. Kim's undercover persona was absolutely adorable. <3 And I loved all the little details, down to the little bits of slang and jargon that prove the author really knows her setting. ;)

Looking forward to reading the next book soon!

Content--various crimes ; mentions of injuries (not graphic); mentions of swearing; mentions of a team member's immoral lifestyle

Another great story unfortunatelly with so many typos/missing words/incorrect words or so mangled they are unrecognisable I had to go down a star in my final rating - should Amazon provide an updated edition without these issues I'll raise my rating to four stars.
I like this team so much and plan to continue this series, despite the fact I struggle with the drama between Kate & Patrick. I understand many readers appreciate this kind of slow development in relationship and characters - for me it's just unnecessary painful (I know different tastes, and so on :-D) The dual location was an interesting idea I appreciated, the politics topic not so much - though that's entirely my personal issue speaking here. I love the witty style and look forward to read more of it in the next book(s).
I wish we could learn more about the other team members as well and perhaps see them happily in love.

I love the author's passion regarding Christian faith and how much all the lessons in her stories appear natural part of the plot/development/dialogues and not so preachy I experienced (and suffered through) in some other Christian novels. I'm so glad for the topic of this book Do the small compromises we make daily really hurt anyone or matter to God?, it's something that came up in several book I've read in the last time - in my oppinion this one was the best way the author implemented it in fiction so far.

~3.5 stars

I enjoyed the plot. The dialog felt a bit stiff, and there were a couple typos. As a Christian myself, I did enjoy the message, but I do think if you're not it might come on a little bit heavy handed.

I'm not super familiar with the working of government (especially within the Texas Capitol), so I found it interesting to learn a bit more.

It was somewhat tricky to keep track of the main characters (although that's really my fault, for taking such a big break between reading the first book and this one), but towards the end I could definitely tell them apart and they all started to feel unique.

Overall I did enjoy it, but I think this series might not 100% be for me so I'm not sure if I'll read the next one. :)

This was Kate's first assignment with the FBI, but she met them in the first book in the series. It was terrific! This was slower paced, but a difficult case to crack also. The crooks were so likable! Many players in the story. Great spiritual lessons also. I appreciate the way the author weaves spiritual truths into her stories. I plan to read more of her books in the future.

I just appreciate how wholesome and fun this series has been so far. The characters and the team are so fun. But also the faith content! I love how they aren’t afraid to be open about their faith and convictions.
The mysteries with a bit of a spy/secret agent vibe is fun.

And, we can all see Kate and Patrick are falling for each other ;) Can’t wait to continue this series.

Is this accurate to actual FBI SOPs? No. Do I care? Not in the least lol.

It’s charming, fun, has some actual stakes, and the characters are fun. Brian’s family is F I N A L L Y introduced and I loved them

Recommended 11+ for scary situation, theological discussions younger readers may not understand, and anything else I may have missed.
