‘To find happiness, look halfway between too little and too much.’
—Ruskin Bond
• Why be happy and how, and why not to worry if you think you are not.
• Why it is easy to be happy, and how you can miss happiness even if it stands before you.
• How a bird can fill you with joy and how a stranger’s smile can soothe you.
• Why happiness may not even be the word for what we really need.
India’s beloved sage and writer brings together his own pithy observations and those by artists and thinkers he admires in this beautiful little anthology. A Little Book of Happiness is a miscellany for all seasons, one to cherish and to share.
Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British descent. He is considered to be an icon among Indian writers and children's authors and a top novelist. He wrote his first novel, The Room on the Roof, when he was seventeen which won John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957. Since then he has written several novellas, over 500 short stories, as well as various essays and poems, all of which have established him as one of the best-loved and most admired chroniclers of contemporary India. In 1992 he received the Sahitya Akademi award for English writing, for his short stories collection, "Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra", by the Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters in India. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 for contributions to children's literature. He now lives with his adopted family in Landour near Mussoorie.
An Italian proverb goes like, 'A hot sun, a hot wind; I go home and I am happy.'
An astonishing collection of quotes and proverbs about what happiness really is and how to find it. Bond states, 'The fewer your desires, the greater your happiness.' This is exactly what is needed to be the happiest creature ever. We should learn to find happiness in little things and that happiness is the best feeling ever. For me it is reading a book on a rainy day while sipping on coffee. Or listening to my favorite music and vibing it.
'Don't let one cloud obliterate the whole sky' -Anais Nin
I feel like I should have read this book somewhere outside with the nature accompanying me, instead of sitting alone in the room and reading behind the walls. It was refreshing to read the positive thoughts. Though the book being a short read, it carries a huge amount of optimism and gives a wider outlook towards several things around. This is a little book that brings to us enormous happiness and limitless wisdom.
"If a tortoise could run, And losses be won, And bullies be buttered on toast; If a song brought a shower, And a gun grew a flower, This world would be better than the most."
"If a straw can tickle a man, it is an instrument of happiness." - John Dryden
'Why are you dancing in the middle of the road?' I ask. 'Because I am happy,' he says. 'And why are you so happy?' He looks at me as if I am a fool. 'Because I am dancing in the middle of the road,' he says.
Ruskin Bond for me is that one elderly that you run to when you feel everything is going wrong in life, when you want to be pampered, when you just want to be told everything will be okay as long as you have hope and even when you are happy and need to be told that you deserve it! The fact that I don't know him personally never bugged me because my reading begun with Bond and I have always found solace in his words and that is what 'A Little Book Of Happiness' did to me this time! 🌹
"To be happy, you must have compassion-not only for the world, but also for yourself. And you should know that contentment is easier to attain than happiness, and that it is enough."
'A Little Book Of Happiness' by Ruskin Bond is an anthology of poetry and quotes by Bond and some of his favourite writers that he shares with his readers. You can't call it a secret to happiness but these quotes make you feel good, they kind of turn on a switch in your head that takes you to a happy place and make you feel good. This book inspires you to find happiness and joy in the smallest of things.
A Little Book Of Happiness' is such an amazing, feel good book that it instantly became one of my favorites by Bond and I love the collection of poems. It was interesting to note how every quote/poem that Bond thought could bring happiness was included in the book. I think there is a lot that the book conveyed about happiness and life in general.
This book contains some inspirational/ motivational ideas of Ruskin Bond, intended to solicit happiness, as the name suggests. There are also some of his favourite quotes. light read.
There are beautiful quotes by the author himself, all of which are meant to decipher the meaning of happiness and help the readers to find their own ways to be happy in their life. My favorite quote from this book is "Dear Reader, May you have the wisdom to be simple and humour to be happy"
Don’t let one cloud obliterate the whole sky. – Anais Nin
There is a reason why Mr Bond is one of my favourite authors. His writings are simple and they remind me of my sweet childhood days. ( I’m still in my childhood). Like a lullaby, his words become soothing, and for once I don’t have to worry about anything.
It has been a while since I reviewed and that’s because my school has opened and it demands so much of me. Reading has never been diminished, I am just not having the time to read books. I somehow squeezed in a bit of time to read such a short book.
A Little Book Of Happiness, just as the title suggests is a book that encourages the readers to stop for a while and be happy in life. How many times have we forgot to smile these days? Between hectic work schedules and other errands irritating us, how many times have you seen a sunrise or sunset? Ask yourself , the answer may surprise you.
Life should be filled with happiness. Money should be something which helps us to live. It shouldn’t be our sole aim on lives. Do we know that? Sure! But do we keep that in mind and work accordingly?? Hmm, the answer is not in the affirmative.
To anyone who’s reading this, Life is filled with tiny moments which can make you happy. Don’t miss them please. Be happy, I know it’s easier said than done. But how about we try? Just for one minute everyday? I will join you. You aren’t alone. Everyone’s messed up.
But messed up doesn’t mean that we can’t be happy. Here’s to trying in 2021. Let’s keep our face to the sunshine, or at least let’s try.
Pearls of wisdom come in little snippets, here's a collection of such pearls. Love the entire collection!
Here's some of them
'Happiness is as elusive as a butterfly, and we must never pursue it. If we stay very still, it may come and settle on our hand. But only briefly. We must learn to savour the moment.'
‘The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.’ ―Marcus Aurelius
'Learn to let go. That is the key to happiness.’ —A Buddhist teaching
Listen to the night wind in the trees, Listen to the summer grass singing; Listen to the time that’s tripping by, And the dawn dew falling. Listen to the moon as it climbs the sky, Listen to the pebbles humming; Listen to the mist in the trembling leaves, And the silence calling.'
A short collection of the author's personal thoughts and quotes, about happiness and life, that he compiled from various sources.
Something you'd pick up on a cozy, rainy day.
Don't feel like adding this to my reading goal for the year as I didn't feel like I read anything new.
Quotes I particulary liked (written by the author himself):
"I may not have contributed anything towards the progress of civilization, but neither have I robbed the world of anything. Even the spider on the wall is welcome to his space. After all, he gives me mine, and we are both at peace."
"Happiness shared is an act of compassion; happiness flaunted, an act of violence."
I loved "A little book of love and companionship". Hence went and bought the whole "Little book" series. Somehow, this does not make my heart ache as much. It is however a really good compilation for happy poems :')
Lovely Book on Happiness. Lots of quotes and personal experiences from author are quite good. Also there are few pages dedicated to pen down reader's thoughts!
A Little book of Happiness contains pearls of wisdom on happiness by stalwarts of literature and the man himself - Ruskin Bond. I always look forward to the introduction in Ruskin Bond’s books as it is peppered with generous dose of humour. The book starts with a humorous note with the author comparing happiness to a girl who accompanied a boy to a local bookstore.
Happiness can be induced in simple ways. A simple straw can also be the source of laughter when it produces a tickling effect. For Mr. Bond, happiness is watching nature’s play, observing its subtle intricacies. He comes to a conclusion that watching a small creature in the lap of nature instills a hope that there is more to life than technology which often divides us. His happiness also lies in watching a plant germinate to life. In one of the passages, he has expressed joy whilst watching the city lights of his hometown, Dehradun or as he affectionately calls it Dehra. I love the way he described nature in simple yet aesthetic way.
But there are others who have different notions on happiness. J.M. Barries concurs that a baby’s laughter is the source of happiness and origin of fairies while the great Pablo Narula observes that Laughter is the language of the soul. E. M. Forster’s famous lines ‘Happiness is elusive like a butterfly...’ also finds a place in this collection. The philosopher Epicurus links happiness to having friends.
Here are some quotes that struck a chord with me -
i) ‘Do not chirp too much about your happiness, and do not whine too much about your unhappiness.’
ii) If a tortoise could run, And losses be won, And bullies be buttered on toast; If a song brought a shower, And a gun grew a flower, This world would be better than most.
iii) ‘The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life.’
The book is written in the form of simple journal entries and a notes section to jot our own thoughts. This one is a concise guide meant for readers of all age groups to cherish its teachings. Some sayings stood the test of time while some got lost in the fast paced life. My key takeway from the book is that happiness is synonymous to resilience and patience.
A very little but wonderful book. It is a delight to read the book and it gives a lot of happiness to read the book.
It is a collection of poems, quotes about happiness.
Some wonderful quotes are 1. To find happiness look halfway between too little and too much. 2. Happiness is not waiting to be found; there is no use looking for it. All we need to di to find barriers within ourselves that we have built against it. Trust - in people, in life - is a good way to begin. 3. Hold on in times of pain and strife; Until death comes, all is life. 4. To be happy you must have compassion - not only for the world, but also for yourself. And you should know that contentment is easier to attain than happiness, and that it is enough. 5. To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness - Bertrand Russell. 6. The fewer the desires, the greater your happiness. 7. All suffering there is in the world comes from desiring only myself to be happy . -Shanthideva 8. Happiness is not the opposite of sorrow. They co-exist; in that acceptance we take the first step towards inner peace. 9. Happiness always lingers with unhappiness. They are two sides of the same coin. When the whole coin drops from your hand your are neither happy nor unhappy. - Osho 10. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened. - Dr. Seuss 11. From a Bhutanese book of wisdom. Do not chirrup too much about your happiness, and do not whine too much about your unhappiness. Which makes me think happiness shared is an act of compassion; happiness flaunted is an act of violence. 12. Why should we build our happiness on the opinions of others, when we can find it in our own hearts? 13. Sometimes there is greater joy in gazing at a mountain than in climbing it. 14. Each one of us is a mass of imperfections, and to recognize and live with our imperfections makes for an easier transit on life's journey. [ I would add if we can live other's imperfection it makes life extremely liveable] 15. Life rarely plays by the rules. Before you say "What did I do to deserve such misfortune!" think of all the times you found happiness when you have done little to deserve it.
The book is full of such wonderful pithy statements.

#276 Book 37 of 2024- A Little Book of Happiness Author- Ruskin Bond
“We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned,so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”
Today is Ruskin Bond’s birthday, hence decided to post the review today. His “A little book of” series is my favourite for so many reasons. It’s a very short book, all the three books in this series are a short and beautiful read. One can easily finish this book in one hour. But one would not want to finish this book in one go, that’s the beauty this series holds.
This title “A little book of happiness” is all about happiness, or I can also say it like,Ruskin Bond’s take on Happiness! It’s a collection of quotes about happiness, about what makes us happy. We often over think and forget to enjoy what we have, forget to notice what we hold in our hands, this book will help you embrace your present and everything that you are. Happiness comes from within, nothing else. This book talks about inner happiness. It has quotes which Ruskin Bond liked and also the quotes he written, it also has notes pages, so you can write down your thoughts when you are reading. It’s a beautiful read. You’ll feel happy, grateful right after finishing the book.
A Little Book of Happiness is Ruskin Bond at his most distilled—gentle, reflective, and unwaveringly optimistic.
Rather than a conventional narrative, the book is a collection of musings, memories, anecdotes, quotations, and small philosophical reflections on what it means to be happy.
Bond approaches happiness not as a grand achievement but as a craft, an attitude, and most importantly, a habit of the heart.
What makes this book special is its sincerity. Bond never pretends happiness is constant, nor does he moralize about it. Instead, he treats happiness the way he treats nature or childhood in his fiction—with affectionate curiosity.
For him, happiness is found in daily life: the warmth of morning sunlight, the companionship of a friendly dog, the sound of rain on a tin roof, the comfort of a well-loved book. These small joys form the backbone of his reflections.
Bond draws often from his own life—his days in Mussoorie, his walks in the woods, memories of his father, friendships from childhood, and encounters with strangers. These recollections are neither overly sentimental nor embellished.
They function as emotional lessons: showing how kindness, attention, and gratitude can transform moments into treasures.
A recurring theme is contentment. Bond argues that happiness grows not from what one accumulates but from what one appreciates. This contrasts sharply with modern anxieties—ambition, competition, hurry, and distraction.
Bond’s voice becomes a kind of refuge, a reminder that life is not meant to be a race.
Another recurring theme is resilience. Happiness, according to Bond, does not mean the absence of struggle. He writes with honesty about loneliness, ageing, and loss—but always from a place of acceptance and perspective.
These reflections give the book emotional weight, keeping it from becoming a mere feel-good collection. Bond seems to say: happiness is not the opposite of sorrow, but the light that continues to shine despite it.
The book’s structure is fragmentary but cohesive. Short paragraphs, snippets of verse, and brief meditations create an atmosphere rather than a linear argument. This format makes the book easy to revisit; readers can open it anywhere and find a moment of clarity or warmth.
It becomes less a book and more a companion—something one can keep on a desk or bedside table.
Bond’s writing remains, as always, deceptively simple. His sentences are short, his metaphors natural, his tone unhurried.
This simplicity is not a lack of depth but a deliberate artistic choice. It mirrors the very philosophy he promotes: happiness is uncomplicated if one allows it to be.
Ultimately, A Little Book of Happiness is not a guidebook, but an experience. It gently shifts the reader’s mindset, reminding them that joy is not something to chase but something to notice.
It is Bond’s way of gifting readers a quiet philosophy for life—one grounded in beauty, empathy, gratitude, and presence.
In a world increasingly defined by noise, the book becomes a pocket of serenity.

I read it in some other book review of Ruskin bond that, most of his books and relates human emotions with nature. This book also goes on a similar line. It's a collection of thoughts by various great beings and some by the author himself. Happiness means different to different people. But we can agree with the author here that it's not an expensive or luxurious thing that only people with "money" can have. Happiness can be found in every situation. It can be found within ourselves and when you can't look around yourself. You will find it in flowers, butterflies, in a peaceful walk on a rainy day, you will find it in a child's smile. You don't need to turn the world upside down while you are in search of it.
My favourites,
" If you want to be happy, be. " - Leo Tolstoy
" Happiness does not arrive with fireworks. It settles in quietly, long before you recognise it. And sometimes it is gone before you do. "
" The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life. " - William worries
" Contemplating the tiny ladybird on the wild rose gives one hope that there is more life than interest rates, dividends, market forces and infinite technology. There is space for the big and the small; there is space for you and me and the ladybird."
" Sometimes your joy is the source of your time, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy. " - Thich Nhat Hanh

It's been a loooonnggg time since I posted any review. It's not like I quit reading. People who follow me constantly will know that I'm reading books but least interested to post anything over here. Still finding out the reason for my disinterest. Anyway, I'm back and don't know how long will I stay.
Let's discuss "A little book of happiness" by Ruskin Bond. I'm a huge fan of Bond's little books where he will compile quotes on the related concept. Before I read Love, the compassion you can scroll down to see those reviews. This time it is happiness.
On a fine morning, I purposely woke up earlier to read this book because I know this book soothes the soul. So, that day before rushing to the office I decided to attain serenity. I made my cup of coffee and started reading this book with my main door wide open so that I can see the sky and dancing clouds. After finishing this in one go. I let out a long sigh. Not a sigh of tiredness but satisfaction.
"To find happiness look halfway between too little and too much"
This book is a literal peace. It brings out a certain calmness within. Like the above morsel states, it teaches how to discover happiness in between. All the little things around sprinkle happiness upon us which we barely notice in our busy life and complain about. This is the best read to start your busy day or to end your hectic day with a cup of your favourite drink. Happy reading.
#253 "Let us learn from the humble marigold. The rose may be the queen of flowers, and the jasmine the princess of fragrance, but the marigold holds its own through sheer sturdiness, colour and cheerfulness, brightening up winter days, often when there is little else in bloom."
BOOK: A little book of happiness AUTHOR: @ruskinbondofficial GENRE: #selfhelp RATING: 4.0
So what does happiness mean to you? For me, it means being in synch with myself, to be able to love myself guilt free. To be able to feel proud of myself and my journey.
But again, why define happiness with a reason when we can define happiness by just being in the moment??? Thats what the author have asked us in this little book of happiness with his quotes and thoughts.
Enjoy the scenary on a road side when you are walking, enjoy the job you are doing, enjoy being poor , or alone etc , dont define happiness with your highest achievements, always try to be in the moment and appreciate the little things in life. This is a feel-good , selfhelp book which makes us think, why define happiness when you can just be!
One of the best i have read so far.The book is all about feelings and emotions that one can really experience when you live through the words of Mr. Bond. I absolutely enjoyed it. Though i listened to the audiobook version i could literally imagine each and every scene and be a part of it. The details and feelings expressed through such small and mundane things is superb.one could definitely connect to it very easily and be in love with. Two of the most significant things in the Author's life is his bedroom's Window and his Love for nature. He certainly sees everything out of that window and be absolutely happy. Whether it be the clouds, mountain range or the empty roads. if one can then he/she must read the physical copy rather than the audio version like i did. It might feel more intimate. The book has so many instances that illustrate the joy the Author finds in such little things and be grateful for from Raat ki Rani to spiders living in the corner of the room. It teaches us a valuable lesson "if you're willing to,then you can find happiness in almost anything." want to know more read it yourself . P.S: i finished it in about 3 hrs.
Ruskin Bond's A Little Book of Happiness has short verses and quotes by some of the most famous writers in the world. There are beautiful quotes by the author himself, all of which are meant to decipher the meaning of happiness and help the readers to find their own ways to be happy in their life. It is a complicated world and we tend to take a lot of stress and run after superficial things while searching for happiness. Ruskin Bond has attempted to make the readers know that happiness could be found in simple situations and the things around us can make us extremely happy, only if we pay attention to them. 🍀 The quotes and verses have various themes related to nature, people, work, life and more. I would suggest you to read a few pages of this book everyday, preferably in the morning to start your day on a positive note and develop an optimistic outlook towards things.
'Happiness is right next to you... All we need to do is to find the barriers within ourselves that we have built against it."
Happiness is in everything. It is only our perception. Someone finds happiness in a birdsong, but for some it may be a distraction while doing something. Ruskin sir always encourages his readers to observe the surroundings and acknowledge every tiny being and tbing around us. This can result in a lot of happiness. Through some wonderful quotes, mostly written by him, and from the thoights of some other artists, Ruskin sir has guided his readers towards the easy path of happiness. With this little gem of a book, Ruskin Bond wishes his readers 'wisdom to be simple, and the humour to be happy.'
'Happiness is a mysterious thing to be found somewhere between too little and too much.'
This is a book with collected quotes on Happiness. Some by the author himself - his musings and experiences. Some from the sayings of individuals or cultures. Or snippets from a book. With 159 pages, each with a quote or two, it can be read within an hour. However I suggest that one reads it across days to not miss the essence in monotony. The price is too high though - ₹350. The hard bound cover was likely so this can last long with us to cherish. The empty pages titled "Notes" between sections was also not needed. The intent is likely that the reader may add his own quotes or even thoughts. But for that the publisher could have left some pages in the end as happens in similar such other books. I hope the publisher takes this feedback to reduce the price of future editions. If not for the price, this is the best book to begin your day with.
I came to know about this book from a friend's post on IG about it and just fell in love with the cover and the little notes pages inside the book..
It all starts with a question about happiness from one of Ruskin Bond's readers at a book signing event.. In here in this cute little bundle of pages, he has put together some meaningful and beautiful quotes and thoughts on "Happiness". It gave me so much perspective on this one single word and opened me up to enjoy the little things in life and treat happiness like a journey instead of an end result..
We all would have come across lots of quotes on this word, but to see it all together in one place from well known classic authors and the notes spaces are what make this book a unique and a beautiful experience for the readers!
Do read it and it'll be the happiest one hour in your recent times :)
Ruskin Bond is such an author whose words portray perfection and simplicity. All his works are so rich in their core that they connect to a very deep level. With every work of Bond, you feel the importance of the emotions you're going through. His words are healing and comforting, a tap on the shoulder saying 'everything is going to be fine'.
A Little Book of Happiness by Ruskin Bond is a collection of quotes combining quotes from other eminent writers about a happy life and happiness. These quotes show how simple is to be happy. Like I said before, his words are convincing and effortless so much so you can feel your worries calming down instantly as you read this little book. It lifts you.
A Little Book of Happiness is such a brilliant book. It's only Bond's magic that he can convey happiness in the right way.
