The rules are simple: humans from Enom are allowed to cross the forest, Jereena are killed on sight. Double standard, but as Jereenan had taken their land, not many Wilderlings have questioned it. Lana, an enforcer sworn to obey the Alpha, doesn't like it, but never has she considered saying or doing anything about it until now. Then things become complicated when the Prince of Enom comes through with a fleet of Jereenan soldiers.
No one ever goes against the order of the alpha - it shouldn't even be possible...
Jereenan officials had complained about the southern woods for so long, Chase Hunter finally consent to investigate. He's been there a thousand times before, and never has he encountered a wolf, so he doesn't expect any problem. Turns out, they were right. There are wolves. And they definitely want to kill them... Until they don't.
The Wilderling in her red ridding hood stops them all with one word, controlling them.
However, some of them don't seem really happy about that...

Little Red is the fifth Tale, but it is a standalone. I do recommend reading Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, at least, to get the world around that story, but it's not essential. Reading order: Cinderella A little Siren Beauty and the Beast The Snow Queen Little Red
May Sage is a USA Today Bestselling romance writer dabbling in different genres.
When she isn’t writing, she spends her time with her German Shepherd and her two Savannahs. She loves reading, ballet, running, and cake. Mostly, cake.
May Sage also writes longer fantasy romance novels as Alexi Blake.
These are all really fun and clever, but they also have a lot of simple editing errors and things wrap up too quickly and simply. The climax takes 2 pages? I know it's a short book, but really. I like the story, I just wish the ending was fleshed out a little more and there are a couple places where internal exposition could have been cut if there was a dire need to stick to a certain page number. Overall, very fun, but every book in this series leaves me feeling like the ending wasted all the potential of the beginning.
Shortest of the Not Quite the Fairy Tale series I've read so far and honestly, it's very... distinct in the sense that I wanted the story to be longer more than I wanted with Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. Little Red is about 70-80 pages shorter than those two books and the reader in me needs more pages about the hero and heroine getting to know one another and stuff like that. What is there, is enjoyable, but there comes a limit with every book and series where the reader can't enjoy the story no longer because the story is too simplified and shortened. The limit has not come to me just yet, but I don't think it's very far now...
I just love May Sage’s super-hot take on fairy tales, they never fail to entertain! Every character she writes has depth and humor, both traits I appreciate, and her writing style is concise and easy to follow. In Little Red (Not Quite the Fairy Tale #5), Lana is an independent female shifter who doesn’t want to be tied down by an Alpha’s authority. That she is strong enough to beat the snot out of any Alpha that tries to make her submit, is an added bonus. When she spies a gorgeous man in the woods that makes her inner wolf perk its ears, the story takes an interesting twist.
Chase likes to travel in the woods and often goes there to gather his thoughts. Little does he know there is someone keeping an eye on him, and taking immense pleasure in watching him swim. One day in town, he spies a mysterious woman in a red cape and becomes obsessed in trying to find out her identity. When he investigates problems reported with wolves in the southern woods, he is pleasantly surprised to see her there. When he witnesses her showing authority over the pack, and realizes what she wears under her red cape, his interest turns into full-blooded desire.
May’s take on this story is wonderful, and the plot twists were refreshing. I personally would have liked the story to be a bit longer, in that I thought the ending didn’t do justice to the development of the characters. With that being said, I am a fan of these colorful stories, and look forward to reading many, many more by this author.
Lovvvvvvvved it. I've basically been twiddling my thumbs waiting to get my hands on this. So worth the wait. May Sage is a great author, and gets better with every book. Personally, I like the shorter length of the book, as opposed to novel length. It's just right to get lost in for a few hours. Don't think I'll be able to be patient waiting for the next book.
I must say, I'm digging all of May Sage's fairy tale retellings. Red Riding Hood puts the whole wolf/girl/grandma storyline on its head while still holding all of those elements. I can't say much or it would give away these clever elements, but I will say it is worth the read.
A female in a red cloak dominates her life and controls her decisions but when she captivates a prince's attention in May Sage's Little Red the finds the control she has shifts.
Travel between various parts of the kingdom have been restricted to maintain peaceable relations and Lana is a Wilderling who has been charged by her Alpha to enforce these rules, even if they are a double standard. When reports of problems with wolves reach Chase Hunter, the Prince of Enom, who is permitted to travel through the forest, he investigates and enters the forest accompanied by Jereenan soldiers, who aren't, complicating the orders Lana's supposed to follow. As Lana stands up to her Alpha to prevent the needless death of many men, she finds herself with a new pack, and Chase realizes that Lana is the girl he's seen from afar and has been fascinated with learning more about and having her become his wife.
Though not my usual cup of tea genre-wise, I was curious about how the story would incorporate elements of the familiar story of Little Red Riding Hood. While the premise is intriguing and the narrative is generally entertaining if abbreviated, the overly descriptive phrases and depictions of lust lacked nuance and felt rather blunt; the characters could have used more development to better enable a more realistic relationship between Lana and Chase. Though a short read, the story tried to establish the world it contained (and might be better developed in previous installments in the series), but as a standalone tale (and the only one I've read) it ultimately was a bit confusing as it retained antiquated stations and ideas of rule but also had cell phones and cars - the lack of clarity regarding the world made it difficult to determine what fell into the realm of anachronistic.
Little red is the retelling of little red riding hood but this little red is one heck of a fighter! She’s one alpha female but she’s never had the urge to take on the Alpha and take over righting the wrongs of her people. Chase has been running the country but doesn’t hold the title of sovereign. He needs a wife. And no one has held his attention except Lana, little red. When they finally are put into each other’s paths their connection is off the charts. When the Alpha loses his pack and Lana has a new pack and no home things are going to get interesting. Will Chase be able to give her the home she needs and can they survive a crazy ex Alpha?
My only complaint? Not long enough. Could have easily been longer.
What will happen when Little Red would be a dominant female but without desire, to be an alpha of the pack? Add to it the prince who try to talk to her, but on hi way he makes constant mistakes; really funny queen - I literally LOVE her and a lot of tension! Don't forget bout BBW - big bad wolf - there will be also his appearing! Relly good retelling!
I was never a fan of the original Red Riding Hood, I always thought she was a bit stupid. This retelling is way better. Here you have a female character who is strong without coming across as cold and a male character who's fumbling around after her. It was nice to have a switch on typically assigned gender roles.
Little Red was pretty great! I wish that it had been a little longer. I really like the characters in these stories and this story was no different. The main characters were great and the queen was perfect.
3.5 stars purely because it was a little too short. There was definitely enough tension and character building to keep me interested. However it did fall in the "meh, okay." Round the 85% mark. But it holds enough to keep me going.
I don’t like to give spoilers on the books that I read. I believe the blurb on the back is enough for you to decide if you will read the book or not. If you choose to read, enjoy!
love all her books but this one was little slower for some reason.. might have just been me. the king didn't know there was werewolves in his forest till he took some from another town to prove there wasn't any, and all were killed but the king.
This was a great story for how short it was! I found myself wishing it was longer and more detailed in some areas and definitely wanted more of them together!
I enjoyed this story. It was lovely. Unusual take on this tale. I like Grandma, she's an interesting character. I think she and Mary are going to be good friends too.
Nothing traditional about this fairy tale, we have the big bad wolf, a grandmother and a girl in a red hood, but the story line is completely different from the original.
In this setting Lana is part of a pack of wolf shifters, she lives with her pack in the forest, she is kind of their princess and has a crush on the Prince of the country, a human. The Prince's grandmother is desperate to find him a wife, she wants great-grandbabies and soon, but Chase wants more than what the women his grandmother invites have to offer.
The story is way too different from the original fairy tale, but is a very good one.
May Sage has done another phenomenal job of retelling a classic fairy tale in Little Red. She took Little Red Riding Hood and made it modern and sexy! The best part? Sage kept all of the qualities of the original (the grandma, the big, bad wolf, etc.), and I honestly loved this more!
Lana is a very strong female lead. I adored her. She is now my favorite character in the Not Quite the Fairy Tale series so far! She is fair and just, but she is an amazing leader. Chase is equally wonderful! He doesn't judge Lana for who she is and what she wants.
Sage is also very good at world building. This whole series flows very well, and even though the stories take place in different areas of the world, they all connect wonderfully. Also, the one thing I always have disliked in these stories is how the endings feel a little rushed. May Sage did a wonderful job in the ending of this story, and I have no complaints! It was very well balanced.
That being said, my only problem was I wanted more! :) Little Red is a definite must read for lovers of fairy tales and big bad wolves. I'm so excited for what is to come next!
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
Firstly I'd love to say that the cover is all kinds of awesome. imagine wearing something like that when you turned back into you body or even a fancy dress it would be a winner.
I to say Chase made me laugh a a lot he was hilarious with the conversations he had with himself and his gran was soo funny trying to set him up with every woman available. Lana was great too she was down to earth yet very strong and courageous. They clashed at a point of misunderstanding but were ultimately meant to be together.
The scene withthe characters of previous books was hilarious.
Red was not the big bad wolf like the story but the brave and fierce wolf with a alpha male prince at her side.
another great book May. cant wait for the next one
I don't know how, but she did it again. May took an old boring fairytale and made it so much more. I really don't want to give spoilers, but gush this book...
So I love little red. I love Mimi the queen and grandma. I love Lana the sexy white wolf made to be alpha even if she never thought of it at first. Chase seems kind of like a babbling idiot for half of it. seems like the more he tries the less intelligent he is lol. then he lets go and is himself and hes a good guy. i hope to hear more of them in the future because i really want to know how the kingdom goes combining humans with the wolf shifters they all thought of as the bogey man lol. Sexy and fun this is a great read.
I've read the first four and this story joins them in that it is not even close to what is the "original" red riding hood. This version is an insightful retelling, making fun of granny and several tongue in cheek liberties with in the story. As with the others ,except for the adult parts my 8 and 11 year olds would like this story version and it is less scary and shows the consequences of speaking out without having all the facts.
