Okay, I'm still on a bit of an Anyta Sunday kick, grabbing an older book or two of hers now and again lately. While not quite on the same level as Sunday's "rock," this one was very enjoyable, with tons of feels.

I loved Rune right from the start, although his story was completely heartbreaking, being lonely and feeling isolated due to his invisibility, to the point of seriously contemplating suicide on at least a couple of different occasions.

Heartbreaking as well was Scott's young, innocent life, which gets much better upon meeting the slightly older Rune, only to get much worse when tragedy strikes his dad, which in turn inadvertently leads to a 4 year separation between the boys.

God, the scene where the grieving Scott finds the picnic basket and the rotting fruit. So, so sad and pretty much the last straw for his already-tenuous grip on his innocence. He's never quite the same after that.

Although this story does require some suspension of reality, that didn't present much of a challenge for me, as Sunday's writing always pulls me in and makes me want to believe.

I was a huge fan of the dual POV, seeing Scott's hurt and apprehension to trust Rune again, then seeing how deeply Rune cares for Scott, never wishing to hurt him, under any circumstances. It was all so touching and I loved those elements.

I really enjoyed the slow burn, too, when the boys were reunited at 18 and 20 (?), instead of immediately giving in to the mutual attraction that's always been between them.

However, my very favorite part of the story was the fact that not only was Scott the only person who could see Rune (literally,) Rune in turn was the only person who could truly see Scott. The only one who ever really tried, even, which meant everything to Scott.

Also, there's an invisible puppy, so what's not to love about that? ;- )

My only niggle would be that by the last page, we still don't receive any type of concrete explanation as to precisely why Rune is invisible.
Is it a curse (on Rune's locket, maybe?)

Was his mother invisible, too? (There's a hint or two there, but it didn't come off as 'fact' to me.)
But have no fear, the guys do get their well-earned HEA, plus we see in a year later epilogue that they are still going strong, as they forge a life together, however unconventional their circumstances might seem to the naked eye. (Lame invisibility humor, my bad.)

Overall, I'd give this one 4.5 stars, rounding up, for yet another great Anyta Sunday offering.

** Note: This one is free for Kindle Unlimited subscribers or only $0.99 to buy on Amazon, so a highly recommended bargain.

amazing—and flawed.

I feel let-down.

over and over, this author built incredibly powerful dramatic tension, almost effortlessly.

the feelz, guys. the feelz.

but my problem with this work stems from a grievous editorial choice I can't share without spoiling it.

I will say only that nothing breaks my heart like a lonely boy—or a catastrophe that could have been avoided with a five minute conversation.

“Love can be a dead-end.

“Why does it have to be so dark?”

“Doesn’t that reflect the failure of love so well, though?”

Rune stared into the alley. “Just because it’s a dead-end, doesn’t mean it wasn’t wonderful while it lasted. It can be something to treasure.” His gaze slipped to his palms. “A memory to light the darkness of years to follow.”

It may not have been the wisest choice to read (In)visible as my first go with Anyta Sunday's writing, but I suppose, it wasn't a complete loss, either. While it was a short read that had a few heart-felt moments, it didn't quite hit the mark as much as I hoped it would.

“You’re a strange boy.” The words slipped out before I could help it. “Sorry. I didn’t mean—”

He laughed, surprising me. “Scott, you have no idea.” His voice sounded hollow—sad. Then in almost a whisper he said, “I’m a very, very strange boy.”

When they were fourteen years old, Scott stumbled into Rune's world, at a stage in his life where he was at his most broken and defeated. They quickly strike up a close friendship - one further cemented when Scott discovers that he's the only one who can see Rune! Weeks go by and as their friendship deepens - 'he was the best friend I'd ever had' - so to do their feelings for each other. But, before it can really strike a match, Rune literally disappears from Scott's life - at a time, sadly, when Scott would be at his most broken and defeated. He can't find it in his heart to forgive Rune for leaving him the way he did, but can't seem to forget him either - constantly searching for his face in the crowds - only to once again stumble upon him- four years later. 😟

It wasn't so bad of a read, but it isn't something that I would look back at fondly; rather, it'll be feelings of perplexity that how a premise so interesting could have been so unfulfilling instead. I don't think it was the writing - well, okay, maybe it was the writing, but it wasn't that it was written choppily or anything! It certainly had it's beautiful and touching moments that made me want to comfort both of them for their shared trauma. But, it was still not enough for me to get emotionally vested in Scott and Rune's relationship. They both have experienced a lot of pain and loss, but their relationship didn't quite flesh out into a whole one - I can't put my finger on it. 🤔

When they reunited, I liked that Scott didn't forgive Rune easily - he's still swayed with hurt and regret and trying to ease off his feelings with jealous contempt, and a rather vicious bout of addressing Rune's supposed girlfriend as a 'bitch' - repeatedly at times, was something I could have lived without, even though, I know he's upset and all - but let's try to make the characters not complete jerks, okay? 😓 But, Rune really was earnest in seeking forgiveness - despite how harshly Scott treated him, he offered up everything to him to explain why he behaved the way he did and how much he still cared for him - even now.

I think if there hadn't been a time jump, maybe I would have enjoyed it more. For when they were younger, their feelings felt so much more palpable with the intense yearning of having something you know you can't have. 🥺 The faintest brush of the lips - 'that tingling touch of him and me together was all that was important. I’d never felt more whole' - the reaching out for holding a hand in front of everyone.

“It gives me an idea of what love could be --- It can be warmth. It can be lonely and one-sided.

It can be wonderful and embracing. It can be a new beginning.”

Once Rune explains himself - gives Scott a chance to understand why he left - there are a few instances where we get glimpses of their friendship being rekindled. I liked that Scott was a photographer - it was uncanny to see how much he wanted to capture Rune - to bring him into something real - something tangible. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 While their conversations were of such poignant and deep thoughts - that as much as it made me wistful, it still failed to capture the emotional grip on me to believe in their second chance at love.

For starters, the two weeks of actually them getting to spend time together - it's never even shown! It would have helped if we had been given a little something more than just them apologizing to one another and picking up from where they left off, so I could believe that they had become better friends. And while I don't mind that there wasn't much steam, the romance also left a lot to be desired. The build-up to their first time promised something, but it fizzled out before it even began. I felt more chemistry between the two of them when they were younger than when they finally had the chance to be more intimate! 😩💔

The story behind Rune's invisibility was intriguing and heart-breaking - I wish it could have delved a bit deeper into it. I liked how it became such a visceral part of their relationship - heightened even further the longer Scott spent time with Rune. The ending could have taken a turn for a much angstier twist, but I'm glad it didn't head in that direction. Still, with so many emotions flying around, they just never broke the surface with me - I really wanted it to, but something was amiss - something was lacking to make it more fulfilling & impactful. 😕 A lot of story-lines were glossed over and not entirely addressed - especially Scott's mother. I couldn't understand why after all that her subplot was so important - it didn't even warrant a mention in the epilogue! The ending felt a bit too rushed and anti-climatic that I didn't get to even appreciate that their lives were being affected for the better. 😔

“Love can be surprising, magical, unbelievable.”

Like you.”

I suppose this was just a bad luck kind of draw for me. I can tell that the author does have a way with words, but I'm so underwhelmed for how it panned out that I'm slightly hesitant to try out more works by them. All in due time, I suppose, once this feeling of annoyance dissipates over what could have been a unique and wholesome story just left me unsatisfied, instead. 😞

I've just got a few more books left before I can cross all of Anyta's catalog off my list. This was a fabulous addition to my comfort read pile. It touches on some difficult topics but the story is unique and as always, I love the characters.

A huge thank you to Anyta who answered my plea when I couldn't find a copy.

Definitely recommended.

Another Anyta Sunday book that I have really enjoyed. 5 stars from me

Surprising.
Magical.
Unbelievable.

These are the final three words of Anyta's novel, and to be honest, I can't think of another 3 words that would sum up the book any better for me. There are many parts to it's whole...part coming-of-age, part fantasy, part fairy tale, and without a shadow of a doubt part love story, so richly drawn by the author....I loved it!!

We have a story of self-discovery and coming of age for two young men, Scott and Rune. The angst without which an m/m romance would not exist, and 'firsts'.....first love, first kiss.....and then we have loss, which leaves Scott shattered, and his mother completely devastated. But I'm getting ahead of myself....why is the book entitled (In)Visible? Well, that would be because Rune is invisible, forced to suffer the same curse as his mother.

I won't go into terrific detail for this review, others have done a really good job, but I will say that I did get my Happy Ever After, albeit after all sorts of trials and tribulations...most of which persuaded me that they weren't destined to be together....but this is such an unbelievably good story, you'd be MAD to miss it!! Many thanks again Anyta!!

For one magical summer at his family farm Scott makes friends with Rune, an invisible boy. A tragedy and Rune's fear of hurting Scott splits them apart until they meet again several years later. Distrust and misunderstandings have to be overcome before all the promise of their first kiss as boys can grow into real love.

This is like a fairytale, with a tragic boy suffering under an unbearable curse, and the noble friend trying to help him. As usual with this author's writing the journey to HEA is measured, illuminating and full of tenderness. Just lovely!

This book can be read a couple different ways, and for that reason alone I find it compelling. One can either take the story at face value, which is an entertaining paranormal read or one can accept the paranormal as symbolic, which adds a whole other complexity regarding social commentary. Not being a huge paranormal fan I chose to read Rune as symbolic. In reality, I think one should think of it as both simultaneously.

Without giving away crucial details, this a love story of two young teens who meet unexpectedly and find something special. For one, it is a lifesaver, and for the other it is a gift. There are a few external events that heavily affect their relationship and lead to some surprises.

While I love the two threads being woven here, I found the story jerked a bit in places, staggered and lurched. Maybe I failed to appreciate the subtlety, but it felt like Sunday circled the main point of the story, but never made the kill. It was powerful and I wanted that final nail laid down. But, that's me. I like things not just mostly dead, but completely dead.

This is a beautifully written book about an interesting situation: a boy who is invisible to others, although he could choose to be visible too sometimes. Rune, the invisible boy, had hard life. He was about to commit suicide when a puppy came to him. The owner of the puppy was Scott, a 14-yr old boy who lived in the farm. Rune was supposed to be invisible to Scott, but for some reason he could see him. A friendship was born. Later, it developed into something else.

Unfortunately, a ghost from Rune's past life led to a misunderstanding in the most unfortunate moment. They were separated just before their relationship started. Four years later, they met again. Would they get a second chance--especially since each boy now had a girl in his life...

I liked reading this book, although it's a bit more angsty than I expected. Fortunately, the author didn't indulge the angsty angle too much. Usually, I dislike a big misunderstanding as a plot device, but here it seems appropriate. Unfortunately, somehow the last 10% of the book felt dragged a bit.

Still, the description of how lonely life is when you're invisible is haunting. While physically we may not be invisible, socially we often are.

I didn't just love this story, I adored it. Review previously posted at BMBR.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this story, it sounded a bit ...quirky. But I quite like quirky and I REALLY like Anyta Sunday, she's one of my all time favourite authors. So I opened it up and started reading and fell in love with this story.

We first meet Scott and Rune in their early teens when Scott and his dog save Rune from the suicide he was contemplating. By a quirk of...nature?...of something, we never really know what, Rune is invisible though animals can see him, so he is completely shocked when Scott speaks to him. Scott can see him, one lone person in the world who can.

Rune spends his time moving from place to place. He lives in abandoned buildings and uses an exchange system to get food without troubling his conscience, life is lonely and uncomfortable and he harbours a secret that hurts him to the core. He tells Scott straight away that he his invisible a fact that is easily proved when nobody else can see him but Scott. Living on a farm away from most people can be a bit lonely and Scott delights in having a friend and invites him to stay. Over the course of the summer the friendship grows, though Rune seems ready to go at the drop of a hat.

As well as friendship other feelings are slowly, slowly developing. Everything seems so idyllic - Scott even quite likes the fact that he alone can see Rune. Scott has a fabulous birthday and Rune promises him a wonderful day the next day...then disaster strikes and the two lose touch with each other. The second part of the story takes place four years down the line and after years of searching Scott finally finds Rune again.

Of course the road is never going to be completely smooth and each with their own secrets and burdens they have to learn to trust each other again. As ever Sunday's characters' and story telling are beautiful. There is a lot we didn't find out about Rune - but there at the time of reading we didn't need to know it. It wasn't relevant to the story being told - it just was.

I love her unconventional stories possibly even more than her contemporary tales. I mean this is contemporary in setting but has an almost whimsical, timeless quality to it. I would be reluctant to label it as fantasy though it certainly has fantastical elements to it. The setting - as beautiful as it was, especially the farm - is almost, almost, irrelevant to the story. It truly is a story of the interactions between the two MC's and the effect they have on each others lives. It is a story of the importance of others in our lives. It is a story of sacrifice. But most importantly it is a story about love. And love it I did.

Beautifully written, very touching romance.

I hoped for the ending to be different, which is why only three stars not four.

Sunday always writes families well, and I thought the depiction of the Scott's mother was great. No quick fixes here.

*sigh*
I wish I could go back to my old, old ways and not comment but...
Okay, first things first. Despite what I'm about to say, Anyta is still my favorite "stand alone" writer.
Alright, so, this book, writing wise, was not up to par with the rest of the books I've read from this author. I found some mistakes, misspelled words, you're vs your, etc... But that was not the main problem for me and it annoys me that I can't exactly explain what I thought went wrong. I just felt the writing was too simple for the complexity of the story and didn't convey the emotion I needed it to convey.
If you put that aside, if it isn't something that bothers you... Well, the plot is brilliant and original and the story development is touching.
I think I might read Locked next. Hum.

When you find the person that can see you, you don't let go. ~sigh~ I really need my next book to be a lighter read.. this book was beautiful and yet it was soul crashing at how sad it was, mostly for Rune but also so much for Scott. I didn't know what to expect with this one. The synopsis was pretty strange and the book started with two teenagers. I REALLY didn't know if this is going to be a very strange kind of YA, yet it wasn't. It was mostly heart breaking and sweet mixed together. I had tears in my eyes a few times. These two SO needed a break and a REAL chance of being together. Happy.

On the summer before Scott turned 14 years old he watched a kid save his dog. He didn't know the significance of this act, for him, for the 15 years old boy who was trying to end his life and most of all for the two of them.

It wasn't the first time Rune tried to end his life but it was going to be his last. Rune's connection to animals and dogs especially prevented him from ignoring the situation and instead of ending a life - his own - he saved the dog and by it also himself.

Rune's secret is our Paranormal element in this story (the only one actually). Rune is basically invisible. He CAN be seen if he works on it, but he doesn't and his reasons are his own. When he realizes Scott can see him in his invisible state he is shocked. Been 15 years old, having no place or no one to go to, FINALLY meeting someone he can communicate with he finds himself spending the best time of his life with Scott, spending the summer always together having fun, swimming, talking and simply enjoying each other's company.

Yet when Scott turns 14 everything changed when Rune simply disappears leaving him broken hearted for more than one reason. His life is also about to change and not for the better.

The story continues four years later when Scott stumbles into Rune again. It takes them time to open up, to say the things they should have said 4 years ago. They need to let go of hurt and anger before they can try and build something together. This time something real to last a lifetime.

I could say so much more about this book but I rather not. I feel like I've said enough as I REALLY don't want to spoiler the whole situation for ANYONE reading this book and I HIGHLY recommend it, though it's not a light read AT ALL. It's heart breaking but it's also what makes it so damn endearing and sweet.

When you find the person that can see you, you don't let go.

So, last week or so when I was browsing the kindle freebies over on amazon this book popped up (it’s no longer free by the way…). It seemed interesting enough for me to snag a copy…with no real intention of reading. But somehow it had grabbed my attention and I found myself starting the book much sooner than I’d possibly thought. It was a good call.

Rune is in many ways just like any other teenage boy, but in some ways he’s really not. His mother died when he was young, and after a stay with circus folk he’s been roaming around all on his own. There is something really unique about Rune – he’s invisible. Sometimes he can will people to see him, but the consequences from that has taught him not to. The loneliness sometimes gets to him, but it’s something he has to deal with. One day, as he decides he can’t take it anymore, he’s sitting on a precipice about to let go of everything, when a dog comes running up to him. The dog almost falls, and he saves it, and soon the dog’s owner comes into sight. But what is more surprising – it appears that the boy can see him. Scott is a lonely boy in need of a friend, and an invisible friend is better than none at all…besides, there’s something special about this boy. Something besides his magic…

The story is rather simple and straight forward, but it’s sweet, and apart from some minor spelling/grammar errors pretty well written. The language is sweet and the story engaging. When Scott asks Rune about his invisibility and Rune says “I can’t really explain it” I was a bit pissed, because that is such an author cop-out, but then as the story progresses Rune does explain to the best of his ability, so I guess it’s excusable. I loved how nothing was ever overanalyzed or over clarified; it was just clean and minimalistic. It’s not that common in literature, but it suited this story. Only the things that mattered where given page time, and that was kind of refreshing actually.

There was plenty of tension and sweetness between Scott and Rune, and just a little bit magic as well. There was some minor angst too, but nothing overly painful. I really liked this book; it was sweet like a summer’s breeze, but still not vapid or lacking substance. Very nice.

This was very different, in a good way.
After my last Anyta Sunday book, this was a breath of fresh air. It truly was. This is what I come to expect from this author.

Friendship as young teens..... each being that something the other needs. They just fit.
It's hard to say this is in the fantasy genre, more contemporary with fantasy elements.

Like other reviewers have stated, I wish we KNEW why this boy was invisible. Maybe we're just left to wonder...makes it a bit more magical that way.

It's a slow burn, hurt/comfort, sweet romance with a bit extra. Got me in the feels a few times.

I loved this book to pieces! <3

This book is beautiful. Beautiful. BEAUTIFUL! ... and heartbreaking... and heartwarming... and absolutely beautiful!

This book is about:

... First Love, True Love, Lost Love, Forever Love!

And it defines it perfectly:

“It can be warmth. (...) It can be lonely and one-sided. (...) It can be wonderful and embracing. (...) It can be a new beginning.”

“Love can be a dead-end.”

“It can be surprising, magical, unbelievable.”

Again, I SO ADORED THIS BOOK! ... I fricking Loved Rune! And I wanted nothing more than to see Rune and Scott happy.

I definitely RECOMMEND this one! Be ready for the Rollercoster of Feels, though!

This short novel was a disappointment for me after enjoying so much "St-St-Stuffed" and "Shane and Trey" by the same author. Even more so as this time it is so neatly edited with no typos or mistakes to be detected.

This time angst was simply too much for a romance. There is so much anguish, so many unspoken words and feelings. The leads are so afraid to get hurt and to hurt somebody else that they simply fail to express themselves, to be alive. I think Ms Sunday aimed at a finely shaded watercolour but it all ends by being dark, shadowy. Even those moments which are supposed to be happy feel like an isolated sunbeam peaking from stormy, greyish clouds.

While writing is good, pacing is slow. The supernatural element, original though it is, feels only partially put to use in the plot.
I am afraid I shall not be rereading this anytime soon.

I read it all but it was like wading threw a swamp.

Very very long slow and dull as books go. The idea of an invisible friend was good but not explained. The gay romance part was very formula and not well done. I would only recommend this book if your stranded in an airport with no choices.
