Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

Goku and Vegeta just never focus on the job at hand. In their need to fight the best, they end unwittingly allowing Boo to resurrect. Boo ends up beating up everyone pretty quickly until only Vegeta is left. Unlike Cell, Boo is actually just going around and destroying cities and becomes the world's greatest mass murderer pretty quickly.

I may be in the minority here, but I'm not feeling this Boo storyline so far — for now, it feels more of the same. Boo is crazy overpowered, everybody dies, gets resurrected, dies again, Goku Ex Machina comes up with some new technique he learned in the afterlife, dragon balls now grant three wishes again and can resurrect any amount of people... yawn. Well, at least Boo doesn't talk much, although he has a master Yoda-type overlord who does just that for him. Good riddance to , though (but I'm sure he'll come back, too. At least he's gone for now).

Now this is podracing more like it!

Boo has arrived: a blobby, sleeping-cat-faced monster who behaves like a child and whose head turns into a whistling kettle if you call him fat! He’s also mega-powerful. Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, EVERYONE falls to this dude – so it’s down to Son Goten and Trunks to somehow defeat him.

There’s a lot of death in this book though it doesn’t have the same meaning as it would in other titles because of the Dragon Balls. Here, Shenlong makes an appearance and brings back some of the “dead” characters; other characters die afterwards but they’ve died before and come back… It’s hard to feel anything of import happens when someone “dies” in this series because readers have been conditioned to think of death as an inconvenience rather than a definitive end.

There is one character though who I think we’ve seen the last of, purely because Akira Toriyama makes a point of saying that the character has gone somewhere unreachable. Their death though felt rushed and unimaginative – I was hoping for something more interesting and intense and what we got instead was… BOOM! They sploded. Ah, well. I had grown to like the character by the end, despite their earlier behaviour.

Boo and the warlock Bobbidi begin a mass murder spree while most of the Dragon Ball cast gathers in heaven to strategize. So how do you handle atomic bomb-type city-wide devastation for an all-ages comic? You turn everyone into chocolate for Boo to munch! I know Boo’s the bad guy but he’s so silly and cute in this book, it’s hard to hate him. And the whole kettle-head thing when he gets annoyed is so adorable!

Gohan goes into special training, Goku, in his remaining hours on Earth, begins his plan, and things feel like they’re gearing up for some righteous action. DBZ Volume 23 is a great introduction to Boo and a lot of fun to read. I was hoping the series would go out with a bang and it looks like Toriyama’s preparing to do just that.

Such a great volume. Vegeta finally gets the redemption arc I have wanted for him for so long. Alas it doesn't really help but we finally get to see a side of Vegeta we never get to see, the side of compassion and pride of fighting not just for himself but for the ones he loves. Now there are only 3 more volumes to go in this arc and they are all a doozy!!!

Nothing like a bubbly pink child to scare the shit out of you. You just can't predict anything it's going to do and once it does start doing things, it's too late to stop it! Boo gets plenty of page-time to introduce himself in this volume, pushing our heroes to search for an answer. Meanwhile, Vegeta goes up against Boo and it's a moment of truth in regards to what he's really thinking instead of all the tough guy facade he tends to portray.

Boo shapes up to be my favorite villain of DB and DBZ - I mean, a sweet-looking, smiling fatty blob who turns his victims into various types of sweets and gobbles them up?? That must be the craziest, creepiest idea Toriyama's ever had!
Also, Vegeta's redemption arc is just too good to be true. Love it! Even while some of the suspense is lost as it's too early to have Boo defeated, the emotional punch of Vegeta acknowledging his relationships and emotions is just perfect. Piccolo has grown into the role of eternal witness, a one-person Greek choir giving the commentary, and he's ideal for this role. As are Trunks and Goten as the jesters of the piece - their brainless childish behavior is spot-on, adding much needed levity in this very sombre volume.

Gohan gets his chance, too, training with the legendary sword at the Lord of Lords sanctuary. And Goku, Goku always has a trick up his sleeve - this time, it's fusion. Thanks to ingenious suggestion of Mr. Popo, we'll get to see Gotenks soon! ;)

Seriously, Vegeta sacrificing himself to save mankind? Has there ever been a more tender display of bravery in the world of DBZ. How could you not tear up when piccolo said "I Curse it. I curse our helplessness. For the first time ever he's fighting for something other than himself...and he's giving his life for it."

THIS VOLUME. My dudes! This is the volume that really took out all the stops and upped the game for this arc...and it continues to go up from here! So, Buu is released from his prison after 1,000 years and he's...not what anyone expected. He's fat and pink, the consistency of bubble gum. His childish antics are no laughing matter however as he quickly annihilates Dabra. The Lord of Lords and Gohan aren't faring any better either. Buu also reveals his ability to turn his victims into food and he eats a Dabra cookie. Lord of Lords zaps Gohan away to safety and has plans on how to use him. Vegeta falls Goku with a blow to the back and then vows to make the world safe again and breaks my effing heart with his soft side. <3 And then he obliterates himself for nothing cause Buu can regenerate. :/ Piccolo takes Trunks and Goten to safety and informs everyone at the lookout about the deaths and it's devastating. But Goku promises to know a cool new technique that will save everyone if they toughen up...and they better do so quick cause Bobbodi and Buu are wiping out whole cities.
I love this arc and these high stakes are why! Love Vegeta's sacrifice but it kills me that the impact is wiped out so quickly with the revelation of Buu's regenerative powers. This is where everything really gets amped up as we begin the last 3 volumes.

Previously on Dragon Ball Z

(I) Goku is on Earth for 1 full day to compete in the Tenkaichi Budokai Tournament.

(II) Gohan fights to avenge Videl after the opponent beats the living daylights out of her. Unfortunately when Gohan turn Saiyan the opponent used a lamp and suck his chi.

(III) Goku and the gang are now racing the clock to destroy these villains because a new evil may awaken and destroy this Earth as we know it.

That is what you missed on Dragon Ball Z!

The Title of this Manga, "Boo Unleashed" fits perfectly to what happens in this fabulous volume of Dragon Ball Z! Boo comes to life thanks to Vegeta and Goku and is fully formed in the sky into this big fat jelly blob. Boo isn't your typical villain of DBZ because everyone from Freeza to Cell are all obnoxious, over the top individuals who make more conversations than actual fighting. With Boo, he is created with such simplicity that the blob doesn't really make conversation because its mind frame is that of a toddler.

Boo follows Bobbidi orders because Bobbidi's father is the one who created Boo and Kaio-Shin is trying to warn everyone that it is useless to fight Boo and that we must all flee including Bobbidi. He makes the connection that when Boo realizes his true potential no one can govern him and all hell will break loose. Ofcourse when you witness this such nonsense what does the gang do? THEY FIGHT!

Gohan is the only one who can fight at the current moment and he is no match for Boo and instantly it looks as though Boo crushed into pieces but luckily he is knocked out from the impact and falls from the sky and lands miles away from the action. Everyone believes he is dead and during that struggle we jump back to Vegeta and Goku fighting. They notice the whole action based on Gohan's and Boo's chi and Vegeta knocks out Goku because he wants to destroy Boo.

When Vegeta shows up to fight Boo everyone realizes there is no hope and evacuate. Vegeta understands this but decides that he will die without a fight and we get to witness this extraordinary event and Vegeta blows up like the Atomic Bomb and sadly Boo survives the event since he is blob that can regenerate and is whole again. Piccolo and the gang decided to runaway asap.

When Goku wakes up, he teleports himself to Kami-Sama's place where everyone he knows has evacuated to avoid Boo for the time being. Goku knows he cannot destroy Boo because he can only be on Earth for 24 hrs and time is running up so Piccolo plants the idea to help train the others. Goku learned this technique while he was dead that if you can fuse two powerful fighters into one being whose strength is multiplied exponentially. The major flaws of this fusion is it only last for 30 minutes, the two fighters have to be equal in strength, and they have make this funny dance move correctly and if they mess up it either doesn't work or the fusion isn't at its full power.

So Goku is trying to teach Goten and Trunks how to perform this fusion correctly before he leaves and it is tedious. Meanwhile that is going on, the gang used the Dragon Balls to resurrect everyone who has died today that aren't bad guys and Kaio-Shin's partner comes back to live (I forgot he got killed earlier) and they both go searching for Gohan and luckily they find him and is able to save him and take them to their planet.

It is never been heard of a human to enter Kaio-Shin's land and when Gohan wakes up, they decide to train him to become powerful in order to destroy Boo and they believe he fits the myth of the Sword in the Stone (A.K.A. King Arthur). Kaio-Shin shows Gohan of this sword that will possess great strength to the beholder and no one has ever been able to take it out of the ground until Gohan gives it a try and is lucky enough to succeed. It is extremely heavy and difficult to possess but nonetheless he begins his training to become a better warrior.

Boo and Bobbidi want to fight Goku and the rest of the gang and will not stop at nothing in order to achieve it. Bobbidi can communicate telepathically to anyone he desires and to torture Goten and Trunks, Boo destroys countless cities with a blink of an eye and that is when it settles in for them that Boo is one the strongest if not superior creatures they have ever witness and quite possibly it could be the end of Humanity if they are not able to destroy him. Stay tuned until next time for more Dragon Ball Z...

Volume 23 of Dragon Ball Z, made by Akira Toriyama, had a very dramatic time in the story, where there is a evil person from another planet known as Bobbidi and Dabra. These two had a important mission to take care of, and that was to summon their best creation of all time, Majin Buu. Majin Buu is some type of species that Bobbidi's ancestors had created in the past and is now in their hands for it to hatch from its shell. Gohan ( when he became an adult), and The Lord of Lords (a.k.a Kaio Shin) are trying to stop the twp from their plan from happening. Later when Gohan had later blown up the egg that Majin Buu was held in, the creation wasn't actually destroyed! Gohan and the others had thought incorrectly thinking that they had saved the world in danger, but they had actually put themselves into a horrific position. Buu's abilities may sound silly but they aren't, he turns people into the food that he is desired to eat, but he then eats them which will kill the people's souls. It is now up to Goku and Vegeta in order for him to save the world. But, can they do it? I had really enjoyed this novel when I had finished reading it because who would have thought that turning people into food could be so dangerous? There were many turns of events in this story which I had never thought was going to happen which had surprised me. I give this a 4 out of 5 because it gets really confusing at some of the parts in the story which is difficult to understand.

Despite myself not interested in Dragon Ball Z I do have a large amount of respect for the franchise.

As I said before in my review of Dragon Ball, this kickstarted the trends for later Shonen manga and that's something to admire about the entire Dragon Ball series. Shonen manga series have taken elements from the Dragon Ball series and use it for inspiration for their own work like battles, art, character design, and plot. I feel like I was a bit too old when I was first introduced to the starters of Shounen and Shojo. Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon were introduced to me a bit too late after I had started reading & watching series like InuYasha, Ouran High School Host Club, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Code Geass.

Again, I still think it's an admirable franchise despite my personal feelings towards it. (I don't hate it but I didn't love it either) It's extremely popular worldwide and for the anime to still be watched and loved to this very day I think that says a lot about it. There are many things to like and admire about it because of the legacy that it brought with its creation.

While I don't love Dragon Ball Z, it has done a lot for a very popular art form and will continue to be great and loved for years to come.

Most of these stars go to Vegeta. His sacrifice is incredibly impactful, and his character growth has never felt more earned.

But of course, his sacrifice is meaningless. I hate that Bobbidi is kept alive too, I don’t find it very exciting or even interesting. When Piccolo slices him in half, it’s so satisfying. But we just don’t deserve good things I guess.

I also really enjoy the fact that Goten, Trunks and Gohan are all being set up as the new heroes of the story. If only that went somewhere.

I’m so conflicted about Boo. He’s just too cute for me to root against him. Even when he decimates whole cities, I can’t feel bad for the guy cause I know that he’s not the really evil one. I love his design, I love his abilities, and he has a great introduction. But am I really supposed to be scared of him? Because I’m not. I know that Toriyama knows this, and changes the villians around to compensate, but it doesn’t feel right at the moment.

I think my other favorite part of this volume is seeing Gohan pull the Zeta sword. I think Toriyama is finally getting back to his comedic roots, and I’m all for it.

Volume 39: Chapter 460-472
Arc 24: Majin Buu Saga

Buu was released from his shell. He beat Gohan, Shin and Dabra. Buu then turned Dabra into cookie and eat it. Krillin and Piccolo reverted back to normal. The fight between Vegeta and Goku stop for awhile. Vegeta knocked Goku down and he went to Buu's place and fight him. Vegeta was beaten to death. Trunks and Goten come to save him. Piccolo kills Bobbidi. Vegeta knocks Trunks and Goten down and let Piccolo and Krillin retreat with them. Vegeta sacrificed himself by blowing himself up. Buu still can regenerate back and he save Bobbidi.

Bobbidi and Buu now are hunting Piccolo, Goten and Trunks. They are killing people and destroying cities. Bulma used the Dragon Balls to revive people who died today. Kibito was revived and he healed Shin and Gohan. They then went to Shin's realm, the sacred ground who human cannot set foot. Shin want Gohan to yield the Zeta Sword. Gohan managed to yield the sword. Goku proposed a way to defeat Buu by fusion. He teach Goten and Trunks the fusion.

The emergence of the big bad guy occurs….Majin Boo has arrived! With him, the stakes are as high as ever and the cost of failure never higher! Not all of the Z Soldiers are making it out of this battle alive! Meanwhile Goku and Vegeta’s battle comes to an ending. The art, which I continue to praise time and again is so clean and crisp and beautiful. While the background isn’t out of this world…it fits the mood along with the story and really submerges you into the tale as you focus on the battles and the peoples interactions as opposed to the background visuals. I won’t say who…but a sacrifice the likes that no one reading to this point saw coming…occurs and also a slimmer of hope along with a brand new martial arts fighting technique is introduced! As Dragon Ball Z slowly comes to an end…this cultural phenomenon is to be praised. It changed manga and anime….and one could argue the world! Enjoy this latest installment of greatness!

Buu is here! And he's a goofy fat blob of bubblehum that acts like a little kid. He's like a gag character, which really shines in this manga after so many very-obviously-evil enemies. Vegeta is the highlight of this volume, trying oh so hard to be an evil bastard but he's adjusted so well to Earth life it's hard to come back. The characters say it best, this is the one time we get to see Vegeta fighting for something other than his own personal pride! And he looks cool doing it, especially knowing he's done so much evil that he can't really be 'redeemed' anyways.

The rest of the volume starts to slip, for me. Goku has another cool trick he learned in the afterlife, like Kaio-ken and the Spirit Bomb, which will do plot things. Bobidi and Buu are mass-killing cities, like Nappa did and like Cell did, but even our main characters don't care and make reference to just using the dragon balls to bring everyone back anyways. Oh and Gohan is gonna be King Arthur or whatever.

This was such a great volume again! We have Vegeta fighting Goku but then something happens as Boo is unleashed and he is so powerful and he takes down everyone, not even Gohan or Dabra are match for him! He knocks them down or turns them to stone, others are knocked back too and then we have one of the greatest vegeta moments when he sacrifices himself for his son to protect the world, things happen, Boo and Babbidi are on a rampage and they want the 3 so its upto Goku to teach Goten and Trrunks well Fusion of the Metamors and somewhere else Gohan is learning how to wield the Zeta Sword! EPIC STUFF! And its just getting better as we learn the difference in powers between Boo and others and whats at stake here! The writing of Toriyama is getting insanely good now and the art and action as well!

Super Saiyan level 3!

Pretty interesting volume. I didn't like Boo at first, but the further on we got, the more I appreciated him as a bad guy. He is definitely different to every other villain that has come across the pages of Dragon Ball Z so it's a nice change of pace.

I do feel like Toriyama has found a nice transition between humor and story. His humor has gone up in quality too. While it isn't laugh out loud funny, I've gotten a couple chuckles and smiles instead of eye rolls.

This volume was good. Didn't blow me away but I had fun the whole ride through. On to volume 24 and to see how Boo is going to get defeated! Although I suspect he is going to be the villain until the end.

One hell of a fight between Vegeta and Boo and finally we get to see Vegeta's true nature ..Emotional in his way that he dealt with the situation and epic in scope as the fight built in intensity and explodes on a biblical scale.. still don't understand why people don't like that ..Yes it isn't as good as the Cell arc but still there is originality in the Boo character and Toriyama does something different with him rather that giving us another Cell or Freezer .. Toriyama 's ability to bring emotions and to tell his story more through his drawings than through dialogue is incredible and the mark of a legend..bring on the rest !!!

This juuuuussst makes 4 stars. Toriyama continues to get a lot right—combining the dire stakes of the Freeza and Cell arcs with a sense of humor that recalls early Dragon Ball, albeit less lewd and more morbid. The issue, though, is how things seem really strongly to be going in a direction anyone who knows anything about Dragon Ball can tell you it doesn't. I don't want to give away any big spoilers, but essentially Toriyama had everything set up for the new generation to take the spotlight. So, in a way, if I went in blind, I probably would feel more positive about this arc so far—it's the misalignment between foreshadowing and reality that knocks it down for me.

The boo saga is the one im least familiar with because I think I stopped watching the show around that point I think I was getting a little old for them missed too many episodes and so I just stopped but always wanted to go back and finish it I eventually did and enjoyed it. I think because of that I'm enjoying the manga even more because while there's no surprises about how it ends I don't remember all the details so it's still a little fresh for me. Cell is still my favourite villain but I don't agree it should have ended there like some people say.

It’s so hard to take Boo seriously and yet, being turned into candy and eaten is as bad as the absorbing technique that Cell was so fond of.
It’s too bad Vegeta’s sacrifice didn’t work. His mind was almost in the right place for once, but again, his hubris got in the way.
We’re now all betting on Gohan and the fusion between Goten and Trunks - although that could very well turn awry. The sons of Goku and Vegeta into one being? I’m sure those Saiyen genes aren’t going to fuck anything up.

SO MUCH is happening in this volume.
The arrival of Djinn Boo, a child that possesses all the power in the world.
Vegeta sacrifices himself, Gohan discovers an Excalibur like sword, fusion is introduced. And in Dragon Ball anyone that dies truly does not stay dead. Wild build up to the final few chapters.

10/10:
Vegeta. I can’t believe that after all of this time, he chose protecting those he loves over his own life. He finally fought for something meaningful and died in the process. I really hope we see him resurrected with the Dragon Balls after the merged Trunks and Goten alongside Gohan and Shin beat Buu!

Man. Boo and Bobbidi do be just flying around destroying cities while the Z Squad trains. The stakes of this series are in the mud. Also I never would've guessed the Fusion would be as much of an asspull as it was. Goku is just like "oh yeah. I've known about this technique the whole arc and didn't mention it" 🙄
