POST PATTERN (Book 1):

On a dark Los Angeles freeway, someone fires a gunshot at a local football star.

His family turns to Private Investigator Burnside, a former football star himself, who has recently left the LAPD. As he battles his way through the investigation, Burnside's own life is repeatedly placed in jeopardy, and the body count starts to pile up.

Burnside encounters beautiful girls, wayward athletes and overworked cops on his way toward finding a killer who knows he's looking for them. And as he navigates this perilous path, Burnside also comes to grips with a betrayal from his past, one that keeps returning to him, no matter how hard he tries to avoid it.

Set against the sun drenched backdrop of a hot Los Angeles summer, Post Pattern provides readers with an engaging, action-packed story. The novel delivers a smart, sexy plot with crackling dialogue and fascinating characters.

FADE ROUTE (Book 2):

A candidate for mayor has been murdered and there's one obvious suspect.

But Burnside, the former football star turned private investigator, pushes forward into a harrowing investigation that reveals more and more possible culprits, all with their own motives. As the action intensifies, Burnside himself becomes embroiled in a case which goes beyond just one murder. And when the police suspect he's a person of interest, Burnside must race against time to find the killer.

With little more to go on than his gut feeling, Burnside pokes at everything around him. Desperately trying to untangle a web of deceit that threatens to destroy him personally, he is also faced with a scenario that could take down an entire community..

BUBBLE SCREEN (Book 3):

It starts with some missing warehouse inventory, but the case quickly moves beyond simple larceny. And when theft turns to murder, the stakes rise dramatically, and the action intensifies.

The story leads Private Investigator Burnside onto the trail of some people who will do anything to acquire money -- and they will use any means necessary to keep it. And as he plunges into the investigation, Burnside also has to make a life altering decision about his own future.

Interweaving the world of business with the world of football, Bubble Screen is set in the heart of Los Angeles. It is a captivating thrill ride that combines fascinating characters, wry humor, and an explosive ending that is both stunning and unexpected.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

I have been reading a lot recently and this author is an absolute pleasure. The characters are engaging and believable. The plots unpredictable and I laughed out loud a few times.
I’m delighted when I find someone who realizes that even serious situations can contain humor.

The tradition of the hardboiled, wise cracking, cop taunting Los Angeles PI is a hallowed one in mystery fiction, with legendary names like Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross MacDonald mastering the genre. There's now a new tough guy on the block, David Chill's Burnside (no first name given or needed), and, while Chill isn't quite in the league with those aforementioned masters, as this collection of Chill's first three Burnside novels demonstrates, he's learning quickly and readers will enjoy being along for the ride.

Burnside is like these other guys in some respects; he’s an ex-cop who left the LAPD under less than optimal circumstances, and several members of the department still hold grudges against him throughout these books. But he differs from earlier tough guys in one major way, in that, before he became a cop, he was a top notch Southern Cal defensive back some 20 years earlier, and he still has lots of contacts in the world of college sports, including an ex-teammate who is USC’s current head coach. So, it’s no surprise that college football plays a big role in these books.

Post Pattern is the first Burnside novel and the most like the traditional PI tale from years past. Burnside takes a case across town, investigating the murder of the quarterback at a fictionalized version of UCLA. It’s a fairly conventional, but well plotted mystery with a number of suspects. As Burnside works on the case, he gets involved in a number of fistfights and a car chase, while getting the chance to crack jokes galore at the expense of the investigating cops.

In the second Burnside book, Fade Route, Burnside investigates the murder of a prominent local businessman with a lot of enemies, both personal and professional. Burnside’s own involvement in the case is personal this time, since both he and the dead man volunteered at a homeless outreach center, trying to impart job skills on some of the city’s disadvantaged. The book is deeper than Post Pattern, with fewer fights and wisecracks and more insight into the characters. We also get a lot of Burnside’s philosophy and ruminations on life, which are quite insightful.

In the third book, Bubble Screen, Burnside investigates two cases. In the first, a wealthy businessman hires him to look into a case of industrial espionage involving the members of his own family, who wind up becoming the prime suspects when he turns up dead. In the second case, the detective plunges headlong into the world of college football, trying to prevent a greedy agent from getting his hooks into some unsuspecting USC players. There’s a bit too much football in this one, including a detailed description of a big game between USC and UCLA, but, again, the central mystery is good as are the author’s discussions about the business world (Burnside learns a good bit in this book), and Chill gets into some dark territory exploring the dysfunctional family of his murder victim.

Overall, the Burnside series is solid mystery reading, especially for football fans. In addition to getting a bargain price for the three books in one package, readers can see the evolution of the character, Burnside, and the author, who moves away from his reliance on typical PI conventions to exploring the dark side of wealthy LA society and the business world. Long time bachelor Burnside also makes progress on the romance front as well, as a woman he meets in the first book becomes a serious girlfriend as the series progresses. As I write this review, the Burnside series is now seven books long, but this volume is the only collection that the author has made available. The books are quick entertaining reads, and, by getting three of them in this package, mystery and sports fans can score an easy touchdown.

MUST READ SERIES

I throughly enjoyed this series. The next box set is calling me. This series is available with Kindle Unlimited membership. If you love to read I would purchase. I get excited with I find a fabulously addicted author - David Chill is the best. I wanted to stay up all night and read. MUST READ SERIES for all those that are avid reader junkies. Plus, any age can read. Author leaves out the seam in the romance. You will not be embarrassed for your teenager to read. The 3rd box in the box set was my absolute favorite. David Chill address motivation issues and concerns that we all fact. Effort matters and well have it, we must just do it! Thanks for the motivation!

I have now finished all of The Burnside Series (Kindle Edition) books. David Chill is am amazing author. The main character is this book is so well portrayed in these books. He comes across as a good human being--which is becoming harder to find each and every day--not afraid to go the last step to see that the right thing is done. What wonderful character development David Chill has accomplished with this character. I wish that he would write another 3 book series about this character. Kept waiting for him and his wife to split up because it doesn't appear that she has the exact same values that he has--but she does succeed in trying to keep him in line. It is so obvious that he loves his wife, his son, football and seeing that justice is served!!! Love the books!

Football Player Turned P.I.

Burnside was a football player who sustained a career ending injury. He went on to become a policeman but after 12 years on the force a decision to try and help a young woman led to the end of that career, too. Burnside took his connections from his two previous careers and opened his own detective agency. His tenacity and integrity, coupled with his sarcasm has a tendency to get him into trouble. These books are good reads with good character development. I really appreciate that the author does a good job of tying up loose ends. I’d happily read more in this series.

Wanted to like it

Something's missing, though. Burnside's closest fictional cousin is Spencer, but there is not the faintest tinge of humor here. There is no Hawk to play off Burnside, which sometimes led to Spencer's deepest truths. With Burnside, everything is earnestly humorless. Perhaps if I were fascinated by football, I would have forgiven these faults. But I'm not, so my takeaway was that the three stories in this volume are not compelling. I feel no need to read more Burnside tales.

I enjoyed read the first three books of David Chill's. The characters are very interesting and I am not one to be interested in sports player or team but it was very interesting to read this series. I love the main character Burnside and all that he is. each book had a very good story line to it and it was very hard to put down once you got into them. I am looking forward to the next three books as well. It took me a little while to figure out who the murder's were before you get to the end of the story but it was worth the efford to try and figure it out.

Great Ending

It actually required all the books of this set to support the ending. Each book was a wonderful suspense thriller separately. Burnside led the way but the supporting characters provided the color to the stories. The cast of characters were indispensable.

I wasn't sure I was going to be able to handle all the sarcasm and arrogant nature of Burnside's speech but after awhile his personality and true character won out. I hope you enjoy the entertainment offered in these stories.

Football, primo coffee, fine food and mysteries to be solved are yours for a pretty good read.

Pretty good mysteries in this series! I got hungry for fine food, lobster in particular, and wished I could have been at a football game or two with a great cup of coffee! Seriously, the books were easy reading and enjoyable. Enough suspense to keep me on my toes trying to figure out who the bad guys were.

Burnside is an ex LAPD detective who left the force after a teenage prostitute accused him of being her pimp shortly before she disappeared. He then became a PI and fancied himself the new Phillip Marlowe. These three novels, Post Pattern, Fade Route and Bubble Screen, all deal with murder and mayhem with Burnside and his attitude in the center. Each has been reviewed separately under it’s title. Thanks to the author and publisher for an e-galley for an honest review.

Nice introduction to the Burnside thrillers. American football plays a big part in the series, a bit too much for my taste. I'm sure that'll sit amazing with football fans or people that have it as part of their culture.

The books are smooth and interesting to read, but I wouldn't call them gripping. Found the plots a bit plaIn as if something was missing. Overall the series is a good distraction for pastime.

Team effort

The box set was great way to experience the author's excellent writing skills. One football game was foundation of all three books. The attempt at comic relief may be distraction to some readers but really spiced some of the necessary narratives. The last book to me was best of three. All books supplied readers with many characters to try to sift through as the murderer. Main character believable and had depth as a former player on football team.

The Burnside Mystery Set # 1 is captivating and well written

I enjoyed reading the many different clients Burnside met and predicaments he would undoubtedly get himself into. Burnside always managed to get himself out of the most unusual
situations, but not without a few bumps and bruises.

"Easy on the eye"

This might seem like a throwback to the old PI series I watched in the Seventies, but that's no bad thing. The stories are good, the characters are familiar and the settings match the era perfectly. Three books that hold up well against stern competition in this genre. If you enjoy a page-turning easy read that doesn't take itself too seriously - dive in.

Sports parlance: Swing and a miss

These are absolutely great plots but they are overshadowed by the guy being a truly annoying smarta**. You don't want to deal with that type person in real life and you certainly don't want to deal with that when you're reading for pleasure. Pass on reading more.

Safe escape from reality!

I very much enjoyed reading this well-written series. Especially enjoyable for
those who understand the game of football, (better than me!). Good use of the English language is appreciated. I very much looked forward to going right on to the next book and was a bit sad to come to the end!

Pretty good read

Having never gone to college, I don't quite understand the whole football thing. I always thought college was about getting educated.... not be owing a sports star. Apparently, there is a huge part of certain schools that care ONLY about the sport thing..... the story was petty good.... I just wish there was less football in it.

Private Detective Burnside is as tough as they come.

Burnside is a detective you want on your side. In solving a case he uses his brains and his knuckles too.
Modern day Mike Hammer.
Must read for good old Marlowe fans too.

A fun read, time well spent.

I really like this Burnside character. Here's not some young punk who tends to know it all. The characters ring true, and actually feel pain after a fight unlike superheroes. I read all three books back to back and couldn't put them down.
