Hell or High Water #2

Long Time Gone

Rate this book
From New York Times best-selling author Stephanie Tyler, writing as S. E. Jakes.... Soldier of fortune Prophet Drews always worked alone - until Tom Boudreaux became his partner. But when Tom walked away three months ago, ostensibly to keep Prophet safe, Prophet learned the true meaning of being alone. Everyone knows that Prophet, a Navy SEAL turned CIA spook turned mercenary, can look after himself. Which means he must've driven his lover away. Even with half a world between them, Prophet can't get the man out of his head. Maybe that's why he's in New Orleans in the middle of a hurricane, protecting Tom's aunt. But the only looter around is Tom, bursting back into Prophet's life. It turns out that Prophet's been stuck in Tom's head - and heart - too. Their explosive reunion gets even hotter when Tom is arrested for murder. As they fight to clear his name, they delve deep into his past, finding enemies among everyone they meet. Staying alive in such a dangerous world is hard enough, but they soon discover that fighting to stay together is the most difficult thing they've ever done.

**3.5 stars**

Props to S.E. Jakes for bringing the heat back onto my kindle! These guys are HOT together. This book is action-packed, man-loving, romantic suspense and a nice follow up to Catch a Ghost. Overall, I really liked this book but I had a few niggles that I'll explain later.

I love seeing these two alpha males together. They are macho, macho with sizzling chemistry between them. It is like when you see a picture of a bunch of hot military guys and you think... "damn, those guys would look so hot together" and your mind wanders to some filthy places involving butts, butts, and more butts- this book is like that smutty fantasy come true! It is all growling, grunting, and sex scenes involving rope and duck tape (use your imagination... or better yet, read the book!). Can you tell that I liked Prophet and Tom together??? So obviously the sex scenes were a highlight for me. I also liked the action, the fast-pace. It hustled the book along and kept me interested and reading all day. I think that S.E. Jakes knows her audience and pumps as much attitude and adrenaline into her books as possible.

However, I had some logistical issues with this book. First of all, I swear, some of those sexual positions and the number of times these two men orgasmed in like 3 hours is physically impossible. I often was scratching my head, thinking, "Okay, Prophet's legs are up here, so I guess he is facing this way, but how is Tom kissing him then? Like from behind? Or maybe upside-down? Huh?" In that same vein, sometimes the characters would be in one locations, and I swear, 5 minutes later they were in a whole different scene and I had no idea how they got there. I missed some of the transitions. I often wanted to say, "slow the heck down, S.E. Jakes! Can you explain a few things a bit more!" It felt kind of herky-jerky, which I also felt during the first book. Also, all of the military or military-esk organizations and groups of men got really confusing for me.

My last issue is that I wanted more romance. I feel like these guys are making progress together (I think?) but it isn't enough for me. I want more tenderness or something. You know how Ty and Zane started being more intimate? I feel like it is going to take forever for that to happy with Prophet and Tom. I want even more from them.

Overall, this book was exciting and really good, but I could have used a few tweaks here and there.

Oooh, hot men solving mysteries is good enough, but adding in alligators??? It's like someone's been reading my diary.

So in this one Tom and Prophet are in New Orleans helping Tom's elderly aunt during a hurricane. They reunite by having hurricane sex outside. In the hurricane. Now, as a person who has been through hurricanes I can tell you that this is stretching things a bit. These guys would have had their asses impaled out there - and not in a gay sex way - in a tree through their bodies way. It's not just wind blowing out there. It's like nature is trying to kill you by throwing all of her shit at you at 100 mph.

Then, we get a murder-mystery going on with an "I Know What You Did Last Summer" vibe going. Plus, alligators!

Okay, so yes, I've also been around alligators close up. I live in the South, I'm old, I've seen a lot of shit. So, we went camping at a campground with a lake that is famous for having gators in it. So, the hubs and I take the kids out in a canoe and there were gators all around. Now, these things are lazy fucks and had not the least bit of interest in coming to eat us. Maybe they only like s'mores or people's yippy dogs that they insist on bringing camping with them just to annoy the crap out of normal people who would never own a yippy dog in their life because that's just stupid.

Anyway, long story short, my oldest son decided he was NOT a fan of canoeing with gators and we had to go to shore. Killjoy.
But, it was probably for the best. I have a weird thing where I have no fear and therefore have been bitten by a shitload of different animals. My family actually makes fun of me for it. The last time we were in a bird sanctuary in Mexico and some bird was biting the crap out of my hand (because, yes, I tried to touch it) and I was bleeding everywhere - did they run to help me? Did they pull the bird away? No. They filmed it while laughing. Jerks. So, maybe getting me away from the lazy gators before I decided to tap them with my oar to "get a little life into them" was a good idea.

So, now you know next to nothing about the book, but a lot more about Jilly. You're welcome.

OK, I have thought long and hard enough about this review. I'm ready to just write it and move on. There is absolutely nothing I can say that has not already been said, so I'm going with what my GR friend Gina said in her review.
OMG! OMG! OMG!

That sums things up perfectly for me. Thanks Gina!

It deserves at least 6 stars, so GoodReads totally fails this book on it's ratings scale. It is going straight in my top 5 list, right in there with Point of No Return, The Final Line, Strength of the Pack and Laurel Heights. And the only reason the prequel Catch a Ghost lost a star is because I have a completely unreasonable pet peeve with cliffhangers.

Now I'm off to re-read both of these books and all of Ms. Jakes Men of Honor series. Work productivity just took a serious nosedive. *sigh*
This was a fun read for me because it was a favorites book showdown with my GoodReads friend JustJen! She read Point of No Return and the sequel Breaking Point and I read Free Falling and the Hell or High Water series. We dreamed it up as a good way to kick each other in the ass to get us to finally read these great books that have been sitting on our shelves for so long! Thanks Jen! I loved mine!

Before I start this review, can I just take a moment to appreciate this awesome cover !! One of the reasons I love it so very much, is because my husband has the same kind of tattoo on his back... gorgeous...sigh...

Anyways, this is the second book in this series about Tommy and Prophet and it can NOT be read as a stand-alone ;)

Now as much as I loved the first book, Catch a Ghost, I just knew I was gonna love this one even more.. and I was right of course. I always am (I wish).

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor I am always right gif

This one takes us all the way to the Bayou, New Orleans...Oh, how I wish to visit someday... A girl can dream :P

We get to know so much more about Tommy's (awful) past. So many demons he has to fight...is still fighting in fact. Thankfully Prophet is right there with him...These two are definitely meant to be. You can just see the love growing, and of course, they were plenty HOT together as well ;)

life bro needs GIF

For me this book was a bot more emotional than the previous one, so I am very curious to see what's gonna happen next !!

Highly recommended !!!

For me, reading any review is a spoiler...
so this could be a spoiler depending on how you read it.
Needing someone this much couldn't be fucking normal.

description

Raw emotion...a fierce need...love given without words...an intense bond...pain...everything Prophet and Tom represent.
description

Long Time Gone continues four months later, after Thomas chose another partner to work with, instead of Prophet. His choices were all in the hope of protecting Prophet. But sadly, he regrets his choices and seeks to contact Prophet through emails.
I thought I could walk away from our partnership. I ran. I was scared...
I'm trying to take care of you.
Prophet, off the raider and location unknown, has his mind set to take on mission, that forces him to leave everything and everyone behind. That's until he decides to read the daily emails Tom has sent him...that's when his plans to forget, all go to hell.
description

Mind set and plans made, Prophet sets out to go back and help Tom's aunt Della through a hurricane, predicted to hit Louisiana. With thoughts of Tom working in Eritrea, Prophet didn't expect the intruder breaking into Della's home, during the hurricane, to be none other than Tom himself.
description

A reunion focused on sating their need for each other, Prophet and Tom forgo discussing their issues to fucking on any available surface in Della's home. I shit you not, people!! Why communicate with words, when touching, kissing and loving the other, is all the ways needed to express your feelings.
description

He was finally alive again. Holding onto his lifeline in the flesh, knowing that it had almost been too late.

description

Where Catch a Ghost seemed focused on Prophet's past, this story took us back to Tom's childhood memories and nightmares. A time where he fought for his life. Where those closest to him hurt him, physically and emotionally. Accusations and bullying from his childhood, lead him to believe their hateful words... . When these thoughts and words have been ingrained in you since childhood, repeated constantly...you're bound to believe them.
description

Prophet, stubborn and always looking to help and protect Tom, tries to push him to see the wrong in they way he was brought up.
"You were punished for something that was completely out of your control."

Prophet sees Tom for who he really is, and the potential he has to move past the paranoid thoughts of his supposed curse.
"Every time you came back, you proved to them that you were so much stronger than they ever could be."
Prophet sets out to help Tom any way he can, and to stand by him against his past enemies and their hatred.

description

Even will all the intensity of this book, it still had many funny and light moments, shared between Top and Prophet. From the role play of dominance and submissive they shared at times, to the jokes and bantering, on who knows best.
description

I thoroughly enjoyed this amazing, suspenseful and extremely sexy book. Look forward to reading more of the Hell or High Water series, as I did feel that more questions were left unanswered...but not in a frustrating way LOL And also I'm dying to find out more on the secondary characters featured in each book.

Mates if you read MM romance, suspense and awesome books in general, than this is the series for you xx

Re-Read 2015

5 Stars!

Nothing else mattered, because nature’s wrath couldn’t compare to this.

I was blown away with this book!

The reunion scene alone would have been enough. Luckily for me (and you), there’s so much more.Wow! Action, answers, confessions, apologies, anguish, promises, ghosts, voodoo and gators. And some of the hottest sex around. CraZy shaking need!!!

OH, and one of the best “mine” moments ever! Okay, so it’s a little erotic, but I thought it was perfect.

Oh, oh…and the “gooseflesh.” Oh jeez, yeah I am really just all about these two guys and their story.

THE CHARACTERS

"No one's ever taken care of you back, Proph. You have to fucking let me."
"I don't know how," Prophet said, and Tom sighed internally because that wasn't a no. Not by a long shot.

Tommy Boudreaux - It seems like everyone’s out to get Tommy in this book. But mostly, it’s about Prophet “getting” him.

Guess you don’t need flashbacks if you’re living the real thing.

Prophet Drews - Working himself nearly to death to forget about Tommy and to still his flashbacks we learn much, maybe too much, about Prophet’s past.

Side Characters -
Mick and Blue – I can’t tell if I want to chase or be chased. Damn these two!
Cillian – Someone wants to kill you? Really? Huh.
Mal – Oh boy, I think you have a lot to say. I’m a goner for Mal!!!
Roger and David – "Roger and Dave enjoyed the show,…" You’ll enjoy Roger and Dave too.

THE STORY

If working with Prophet had taught him anything, it was that promises were dangerous, especially if they were worthwhile.

Tommy and Prophet have been separated for four miserable months. Tommy's training in N. Africa, but sends daily emails to Prophet that are completely ignored, leaving Tommy to believe Prophet has moved on.

Prophet finally reads all of the emails, all 122 of them, in one sitting, and then promptly finds himself heading into the heart of a New Orleans hurricane. He may not want to reopen his wounds, but he knows he can’t deny Tommy’s voodoo instincts.

Best Scene: I’m torn between the muddy tackle and the “ladder” scenes. No, I’m not. The muddy scene for sure, but damn, the “ladder” is hot.

THE WRITING

This book reads like greased lightening. I blew through it. And then I read it again. It slows down just a bit in the middle, but there weren't any dull moments. It was all...

action/sex/action/confession/action/sex/sex/sex/plot development/action/sex……

S.E. Jakes has a habit of closing one door and then opening another. She keeps me on my toes with a plot that is complex enough to keep me interested, but rewards me with solid explanations...all in her sweet time.

I think it goes without saying that I can’t wait for the next book. I’m just enjoying this series so much and find I really need the rest of the EE universe too.

The other thing he knew for sure was that sex gave them a way to tell each other all the things they couldn't bring themselves to say out loud.

Yet.

~ ~ ~

I would like to sincerely thank S.E. Jakes and Riptide Publishing for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Long Time Gone picks up where Catch a Ghost left off. Tom is in Eritrea sending daily emails to testingpatiencedaily@gmail.com , not getting any answers and bemoaning the belated fact that he could take better care of Prophet if he was with him instead of partnering with Cope to protect him from his Cajun Voodoo bad luck curse. Prophet is off doing black op jobs and sulking about the fact that Tom didn’t choose him as a partner; but luckily reads Tom’s gazillion emails the night before he decides to go major league dark – and ends up in NOLA to save Tom’s Aunt Della from the incoming hurricane. Also luckily Tom decides to disregard a direct EE order and also ends up in NOLA to take care of his aunt; leading to Prophet and Tom having quite the explosive reunion in the middle of the hurricane – apparently on the front lawn.

Tommy and Prophet have amazing chemistry, the sex is hot because the emotion behind it is intense – if not “classically” romantic – it’s clear these guys need each other, neither are accustomed to being so emotionally invested and vulnerable and while they don’t quite know what to do with it and how to maneuver it a lot of the time – they also know they don’t want to lose it. And they have the most entertaining banter.

As the hurricane passes Tommy and Proph are still in the bayou and of course @#$% starts to happen and Tom’s past comes barreling up to bite him on the butt with a vengeance. While Tom is being framed for murder he has no choice but to allow Prophet in and let him help solve the mystery from his tortured childhood (and in the process Prophet promises eventual reciprocation in letting T. help him with the mystery of John and issue with Sadiq) – Oh, and also learns he has a thing for alligator kink – seriously – it’s a thing.

4 1/2 Stars - steaming hot and so beautiful with big male emotions

These gorgeous guys... so freaking awesome to get to meet them again. I love and feel so much for Prophet and Tom. It was so intense, sweaty, hot and full of emotions and strong desire. Whew, I'm exhausted. I have to collect my thoughts for a while....

A few hours later... - I feel like I'm in a slump right now and writing reviews takes too much time. Therefore, it will be a quick one. (One that I also managed to lose and had to write again... ugh!!)

*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*

Long Time Gone is a superbly well and developed sequel to the introductory first part (Catch a Ghost) in this 4-books series.

This part is softer and has more focus on the now growing love between Tom and Prophet (former agents/cops/marines). The guys TALK to each other even if they prefer to express feelings through physical action. (I like that too of course ...) They actually are opening up more and more and we get a little insight into their tangled past lives. Tom even gets to know Prophet's real name - both first and last names! An impressive progress for these so incredibly secretive guys. (!?!?!)
“If my first plan falls through, we need a backup plan.”
I plan on letting you fuck me,” he told Prophet. “How's that for a plan?”
“I like it. Never fucked in a cemetery,” Prphet mused. “Well there was that one time...”

Tom and Prophet both have a lot of old "shit in the trunk" and they have quite difficult to relate to emotional closeness, friendship and a genuine loving relationship. But... they both want and are really trying. It's all so cute to follow - Yummy!

The story and the crime drama take this time place in New Orleans and in the pretty scary swamp/marsh area around it. It's Tom's home area. The suspense part was pretty good, there are some tough and a bit harsh scenes, nice and ugly people die, and many bad baddies from Tom's past shows up. Although sometimes I was not as interested in it - I'm a romance demanding girl...
 photo image_zpsc7fc6e53.jpg

Long Time Gone is IMO a very emotional journey. A big added plus for all well-written and entertaining fun bitching and all these steaming hot scenes between these super sexy boys. ~ I'm just saying; "reunion sex" - WOW! That was something quite extraordinary. Hurricane heat in the best way. Imagine if you can! ~ But above all is this story so wonderfully romantic. I just love it when big strong men are tender and so sweet to each other. Every now and then these guys succeed with just that.
“Mine,” Tom growled against his ear and Prophet whimpered - fucking whimpered - as Tom kept (...)’

This new Hell or High Water series cannot but to be one of my future favorites. There is absolutely nothing to complain about. It's so damn good! I loved it all and longing after the next part. I just must be written and published really soon. Please, Ms Jakes!! Until then, there are some other novels by the author to read.

A couple of alpha males to love; Tom and Prophet!

I LIKE - must be read...

Hot alpha males and all action hero’s… I love them! …and we get not just one but two! …it doesn’t get any better than this!!!

 photo imageedit_1_7263499673mmmm.jpg

If, like me you get a buzz from the danger and excitement of an action thriller, then you will love this book and this series. But there is more… Oh. So. Much. More …it’s also a romance, unconventional, yet perfect for these two damaged men, there are no words of endearment and not a soppy moment in sight but the emotion they share is fierce and intense, and the passion… Holy shite! I just can’t get enough. I seriously do not want this series to end… ever! I love this author and she is one of the reasons I now only read m/m romance because she creates the type of alpha men that make my pulse race and my heart pound, her writing flows and the dialogue, well… just classic!

Their banter and snark is as exciting and seductive as their dirty talk, they bounce off each other, and it’s as familiar as endearments, yes, Prophet uses it as a tool to deflect what he really wants to say, what’s really in his heart, but in Prophets own way it is just as powerful… and fucking hilarious! In fact, all the characters are because it comes as a given when around Prophet… it must be infectious, he just seems to bring out the best in folks!?!

As funny and charismatic as Prophet is, there is also an inner sadness that breaks my heart, Prophets exterior belies everything that is the man, he has always been a loner, with no connections but what he has with Tom is compelling, and so much more than he feels he deserves. There is more to this man than we have so far seen and when we meet up with him again at the beginning of Long Time Gone he is a man focused, working Black Op missions to try and forget the one thing that seems to make his insides smile and very close to falling into the darkness with the ghosts that haunt him. He had pushed Tom away and Tom had chosen Cope… but that’s what he does, he pushes people away with feigned indifference, when all he really wants is to know he is worth fighting for. For Tom, choosing Cope over Prophet as a partner, he now realises was the biggest mistake of his life and knowing he had allowed the man to manipulate him into making that decision hurts. Opening his heart and being honest with Prophet is the only way he can think of to get through to him, daily emails ensue with no response but he ain’t giving up on him, not this time! …Only Prophet could have an email address testingpatiencedaily@gmail.com …just thinking of this man and he makes me smile.

New Orleans, and an impending hurricane see’s both our men doing what they do best… a rescue mission, not to save a specialist or a diplomat from terrorists, but to save Tom’s Aunt, and when these two come together, they are a match for any natural disaster! Especially when months apart have done nothing to quell their desire, which was palpable... and the atmosphere electric as their passion was fuelled by the raging storm, lightening charged the lust of four months apart into a rampant and uncontrollable ecstasy that neither wanted or had the will to contain… it was as raw and powerful as the hurricane around them and encompassed their relationship… uncontrollable, mind blowing and beautiful in it’s intensity… intoxicating!!! Together these two men are combustible and totally leave me in a puddle of lust… I will repeat myself again… SE Jakes writes THE best alpha males, seriously… and this scene will forever be ingrained in my memory as one of the hottest sex scenes ever!

I have to include this, because it literally had me crying laughing, Roger and Dave live with Tom’s aunt, an older gay couple but hilarious and after the intensity of ^^^^ you get this…
“Were we ever that beautiful?”
“You still are,” Roger told him. “Maybe we should make
the most of the hurricane.”
“This was definitely foreplay.”
“It’s like Tumblr, the live version.”
Dave chuckled. “True. But I did not see it coming.”
“Maybe hurricanes affect gaydar?”
“How much did you have to drink?”
“Enough to pretend we can still have sex like that.”

Returning to New Orleans was something Tom had avoided at all costs, but the hurricane and fear for his Aunt had forced his hand and we see a very vulnerable Tom… where all the fear and anxieties from his past come flooding back as well as the guilt which consumes him from an event in his childhood he can never forget, and now… those ghosts have come back to haunt him! For Prophet, being in New Orleans, he sees and understands the triggers to Tom’s internal struggle with anger and Tom wants his help, realising that Prophet is the only person who can help him battle those demons.

Murder, mayhem and hilarity ensue which is another given where these men are concerned. The thread from Catch a Ghost and Prophet’s past love John, still entwines it’s way through this book, slowly unravelling, revealing snippets from his past, and although we have laid Tom’s demons to rest, Prophet's are still lurking in the background with Sadiq hot on his tale.

There is so much in this book that will keep you totally enthralled with Prophet and Tom and I could literally just go on and on about how much I love this series, the author and the characters… especially Prophet… I love him, yes really, I DO! I love the interaction between these rugged men and their overwhelming passion is enough to sizzle ya Kindle, but for Prophet words and emotion don’t come easy and sex is the only way he can truly show Tom how he feels. Both Prophet and Tom live by a code, honour and integrity is paramount to these men as well as ensuring the safety of others and with the danger and adrenaline that comes from their high octane existence, it all goes towards igniting their ardour and makes them who they are... and I LOVE THEM... did I mention that already?!?

We have so much to look forward to!!! But Mal and Cillian are next on the list in Dirty Deeds and quite frankly I can’t wait to see what makes this oh so British spy tick!

Here I go with again with my OMG OMG OMG!!!! I loved this book….

I don’t know how to describe my feelings for this book, Tom and Prophet are awesome together. I love their chemistry, these two had me swooning, laughing and wanting to hit both of them on the side of their heads throughout this book. Here we have book two for Tom and Prophet, hot all action alpha men!! The roller coaster starts on page one and doesn’t end till the last page. This story had me glued to my Kindle, I put off anything that got in the way of my enjoyment of this book!!.

The first scene when Tom and Prophet reunite was red hot!!! I made the mistake of starting at that scene at my lunch time at work. And when it started getting way way hot my lunch ended….oh damn oh damn! I had to wait until I got home to finish it!

This book takes place like the blurb states in New Orleans, Prophet goes down there to help Tom’s Aunt during a hurricane. Tom shows up and the chemistry between these two men make the hurricane pale in comparison. There is suspense of course in this one, Tom is accused of murder and Prophet is determined to get to the bottom on it and clear Tom’s name. We see more of the inner turmoil and heartbreak that Prophet has been keeping from Tom and honestly my heart just broke for him. But then the funny, snarky dialogue would start between these two and I would be laughing again.

I loved Tom’s Aunt, the older gay couple were a hoot and as well. It was awesome to see Mick and Blue too, I love those two…

There was absolutely nothing I didn’t love about this book. Well one thing, it ended!!! OMG I want more….more more more….

Reading numero quatro, in prep for the newness that's a'comin. :D

~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~ ** ~

Update Jan 3rd 2016: I've read this at least three times, probably four. Chances are, I'd write a different review this time around simply because time has passed and review writing styles change. What hasn't changed one iota is how much I love spending time with Tommy and Proph, Blue n Mick, Phil, Doc, Mal, Cillian, and all the rest. Love.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

From the first sentence, this one chomped down on me like a gods damned rabid alligator (yeah, you’ll see) and did not fucking let go. Thrashing me and my heart about amongst the emotional depth charges, only to try and lull me into the “maybe this will work out” lazy-boy, even though I knew it could not be that easy, to breathe, to anything, no way. And it wasn’t, not for Tommy and Prophet. Not for me.

For these two men, they are a living twisting wild ball of contradictions, ceaseless, and yet they and their myriad imperfections fit together, no matter how much one or other or both of them fail at taking advantage of it all. I think they always recognize it, they see it and want it but the actual “doing” of it is always the challenge. They are still each other’s keys.

Page 69 – no joke – and my entire body warmed. So well done. Yes, it’s hot as hell, but that connection, it’s a driving, suffocating, exalted, maddening, loving connection. This is more than a “romance”, these are two people are clawing for each other, for what they do and mean to each other. Makes me want to roar.

Imagery. Who talks about imagery anymore? Well, this story is full of it. Fingers threaded together as the two of them figure out what’s next, because they know there is a next but how the hell do you get there and without hurting each other too badly, without losing each other in the process? This is their journey, given flight by that one image: fingers threaded together amidst the chaos, attraction, fear and sex. As frustrating as it can be sometimes to watch, many a time the journey must be taken in order to truly arrive, not just at the destination, but with the person who should be there with you. No short-cuts.

It’s still so obvious to me that these two men will never be rid of each other, never separated, truly, ever.

The consistency of character is there in both Tommy and Prophet, and this time: Proph takes care of Tommy (well, everyone - tries to, anyway) and Tom sees the real person Proph is but can’t yet allow himself to become. Switch the names in the sentence above and it still plays true. For each other, they quell that fire inside, the kind of fire that sometimes threatens to consume if faced with no opposition in the form of love and understanding and acceptance. They are each other’s best kind of wet, juicy, thick, indestructible blanket.

Like I said, he and Tom both realize they are the “ones” for each other, but allowing yourself to act on that truth isn’t always easy.

Most of us can tell when a story is trying too hard to maintain the reality, when it wavers between making us believe it and yet sometimes separating us from it. In this story, I was sucked in until nothing but ashes remained, leaving me to bump around on the lightest of breezes.

On that note, this story is… heavier. Less one-liners and more emotionally charged particles, serious subjects addressed. This makes sense since Tommy and Prophet know each other better, which means we get to know them better. I want to know these men. I don’t always feel that ‘pull’ of wanting to shake and help, wear sandwich boards, hire a skywriter in order to get two characters to cut through all of the junk and get to being truly together. I felt that here. But as I said earlier, they had to go through every word of this journey to end up where they do. I’ll be taking this journey with them again.

A favorite scene, small but it shouts volumes from the proverbial mountaintops: The most beautiful punch to the heart, it makes you feel alive.

There are a couple of things that I can see maybe some readers noticing and I’ll mention them here: there were a lot of side characters mentioned, probably as an attempt to paint the picture of this taking place mostly in Tom’s hometown and how that affects him still. For some, this could maybe lessen the impact of the hell he survived that was his childhood there. The other is that it felt like there was one too many “dangerous situation where Tom and Proph were forced to be alone together” in order to work out all of the crap between them. Now, neither of these negatively affected my enjoyment of this read because, I mean, c’mon, I’m not sure there is such a thing as too much Tommy and Prophet, but I can see where maybe some will feel a bit of indulgence there. But who cares? I didn’t. This is their story, so indulge away. Fucking FEED ME.

I’ve already plastered so many words onto the screen here, and I could do so many more, this story’s length and depth warrant them all. However, I already feel as if I’ve rambled and yet not truly landed on why these two men slice right through me. What I know is, like a grappling hook, they embedded themselves, deeply, inside my heart and my gut and everywhere else.

I’ll end with this: I hesitate to compare because they are different books in many a sense, but for those of you who read Catch a Ghost and were on the fence, the tone of this part of their story is simply different and I’m willing to bet your doubts will be set aside, if not vanquished. If you read CAG and loved it as much as I did, then this story will fill you to capacity with… well, I’m not sure there is any other way to say it than: simply stated, this turned out to be a love story. A fucking wonderfully crafted love story filled with danger, anxiety, gentleness, messy sexy, gruffness and acceptance.

I love it. I will read it again. I recommend it. There. Go read. Fill yourself with the fawesomeness that is Tommy 'n Proph.

Full disclosure: both an ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review, as well as I own my own copy of this book.

A Boy Meets Boy Review

*fans self*

What you will need while reading "Long Time Gone", Book #2 of the Hell or High Water series. Probably afterwards too.

Hot! Damn! Back again for round two! S.E. Jakes delivers a solid punch with "Long Time Gone". We catch up four months after the cliffhanger from book #1. I won't spoil what happens at the end of "Catch a Ghost" in case you haven't read this series yet. (Meaning: Start this series. Like now-ish)

However, you will be pretty happy with how "Long Time Gone" proceeds. Tom and Prophet are back in business, kicking asses and taking names! Don't think it's rainbows and butterflies because for these two, that is just not the case. Tom still has his "Voodoo" premonitions (thankfully it doesn't overshadow the story) and Prophet has that ghost situation. Does it read like a paranormal? *shakes head* No, not really. It's so subtle and I am grateful for this. Because if you have read my review for the previous book, you know where I stand with ghosts and psychics.

S.E. Jakes is known for having rugged, hot men action in scenes and in the bedroom. Rowr! She does not disappoint. At. All. *coughs*hurricane sex/ washing machine sex score*coughs* Nothing hotter than two big, strong brawny men trying to figure what a partnership can truly mean.

“You are so fucking good for me and so fucking bad for me at the same time."
"It's not good if you don't have the mix of both. ”

Do these men figure it out? Sort of. (I mean hello this is book #2 out of 4, people!) There still is room to grow.

What we do get in this latest installment is more background on Tom's past, deep down in the Louisiana bayou. A category 4 hurricane is brewing and Prophet and Tom weather it together with a snarky as hell aunt Della and her two renters, older gay couple Dave and Roger. You will love these three.

Here's a sample of my favorite quotes from these characters:

“You're doing it wrong."
"Son, I've got a gun to your chest and you're telling me that I'm doing it wrong?"
"Yes"
"How?"
"Closer isn't better." He disarmed her with a swift motion, then offered the weapon back to her. "Further away you are, the less unpredictable I can be."
Della's eyes had opened wide with surprise, but she recovered fast. Took the shotgun back and said, "Okay. Knock again so we can start over.”

I love Aunt Della, wished there was more scenes with her and more interaction between her and Prophet.

Roger and Dave:

In the dark, Dave reached for Roger's hand as they watched the shadowed lovemaking. "Were we ever that beautiful?"
"You still are," Roger told him.
"Maybe we should make the most of the hurricane."
"This is definitely foreplay."
"It's like Tumblr, the live version.”

This couple was a hoot. And they got to live a dream of mine, being a voyeur to Tom/Prophet loving.

Do not confuse this story for being a drawn out PWP, that is farther from the case. There is a backwoods murder/mystery going on and Tom, unfortunately, is in the middle of it. We get to see where Tom comes from (bayou), how he grew up (it wasn't pretty), secret talents he has (hint: alligator) and how he is most deservedly the perfect partner for Prophet.

I love Tom...I think a smidge more than Prophet (alright a little more than a smidge). I'm a sucker for damaged heroes, what can I say?

Prophet is still as snarky and wisecracking as ever. He has a tendency to leave one in a state of frustration (from his smart mouth) and lust (from the rest of him)...lustration, if you will. I was happy Tom got to shine a little more in this book.

Oh, it sounds like I was in alpha love with this book, why not 5 stars? I was in total alpha lustration. Believe me. But...the niggles, they were present. The pacing was not as smooth as the book prior. It was a little braking here and there. Plus, at times, I questioned what exactly was going on, who's doing what, the characters seemed to know more than the reader and I want an invite to the party. Maybe if book #1 and #2 were combined, I'd rate higher, but since it wasn't...I'm going with 4 hearts. The murder/mystery gets solved with some muss and less fuss. We learn a few answers to some questions like Prophet's real name. Totally fitting, BTW.

I liked how the book ended. Yes, it is a cliffhanger but it seems like a good spot for Tom and Prophet's partnership. They are finally realizing how to balance and share...well for Prophet and Tom, anyway.

A great combination of hot sex in hot places, memorable secondary characters, a bayou whodunit, snark and hotter kick ass action with mercenaries, spies and ex soldiers, oh my! Just another slice of S.E. Jakes' wonderful imagination.

Do I want to read book #3? Hell yes. Need to feed my Tom/Prophet addiction.

Would I recommend? See above. But please read the series in order, otherwise you will be lost.

Do not expect: immediate resolution. If you need instant gratification, you might suffer from lustration.
Do expect: an entertaining ride. ;D

Let's be frank. This book? SIZZLES.

Proph and Tom have great chemistry, and if you liked them in the first Hell or High Water book, this one won't disappoint. There were some fun secondary characters in this one as well, like Tom's aunt Della.

While I love alpha males, these two, they need to do some kind of candlelight dinner cruise. I like my smut with at least a touch of romance, and sadly it was pretty much missing here.

The story moves at break-necking speed. It's all very helter-skelter on meth. I was totally confused by the various missions and military off-shoots. Maybe that's just me. Apparently I'm not a military strategist, and I sort of gave up trying to make sense of the plot.

And that's ok, cause I got sex in a hurricane! on a washer! during a spin cycle!

This book was sexy, smutty, HAAAAAWT! Major heat index, peeps, and worth reading for that alone.

So I was not a fan of how the first book ended, and had to keep myself medicated to prevent bodily injury to myself and others when I was done. So it was a surprise when I looked on the calendar, noticed the big red circle and remembered Long Time Gone was released on 10/28. Fortunately for me, I had the day open to be antisocial!

So we pick up four months after the events of Catch a Ghost. It’s really hard to give much new insight for this book, because if you liked its predecessor, then the sequel doesn’t disappoint. Prophet and Tom are still their same old selves, with some drastic changes to their relationship. And by changes, I mean good changes. And when their reunion occurs, my brain did some sparking with the proverbial smoke trailing from both ears. So yeah, great sex.

While Catch a Ghost focused a lot on Prophet’s past with some hints of Tom’s thrown into the mix, the sequel does a 180 turn. The setting of Long Time Gone takes place in the bayou where Tom’s abusive past catches up to both our MCs. There is definitely less action in this book compared to its predecessor – there’s a murder mystery going on that doesn’t officially involve EE. We get the appearance of familiar secondary characters Blue, Mick, Mal, a bit of Cillian, and a little of Phil. While the focus is on Tom, Prophet does some confessing (under duress of sex) of his own history. It paints a clearer picture of both our MCs and shows that they are really committed with each other. *swoons*

So if you liked Catch a Ghost, but wanted to learn more about Tom, then you’ll like Long Time Gone. There’s sexy time, a lot of confessing, alligator kinks (who’d have thought?!), and mushy romance fuzzies thrown into the pot. And while it’s obvious there is more to come with this series, the book ended on a good and non-cliffhanger note.

Tom and Prophet's reunion itself deserves 5 stars!!! Hot, steamy, sexy... breathtaking!

photo 5317390_zps75a001a7.gif

Their individual past is a constant issue between them, but I hope that they will overcome it as time goes by! They have now a more solid commitment and they know that they are destined to be together... forever!

***4.5 Stars***

I've also realized that it's really never too late. For anything.

Is this series turning out to be fucking awesome???

Prophet and Tommy have got my emotions and anxiety in a huge ball of knots....much like how they are....and I'm loving every fucking minute of it!

"You are so fucking good for me and so fucking bad for me at the same time."

"It's not good if you don't have the mix of both."

In this second book, the focus is more on Tommy and his past. We are back in Louisiana dealing with Tom's demons and secrets. Which can I just say were...

Being back in Louisiana is hard for Tommy, but when he's framed for the murder of someone from the most difficult time in his life, he has to come face to face with his past....all while Prophet is there to witness it. He doesn't want Prophet to feel obligated to help him, but Prophet's heart could never give him any other choice.

"Come on, let it out, T. Let it go and then - "

"And then it becomes your burden. And you have too many of those already."

"You're not a burden, Tommy. Never were, never will be. You understand?"

Every frustrating fight only manages to bring them closer together. They never deny their need for each other (because let me tell you, Tom and Prophet are SCORCHING HOT!!)

It's the rest of the stuff getting in their way. It's not their feelings holding them back, it's the liability those feeling's possess. How enemies can quickly use those emotions against you.

"What are you worried about?"

"That I'll hurt you," Prophet said honestly. "That I'll get you hurt."

"Same here, Proph. But I can't stay away."

The setting of this book plays as much a part to the story as the characters. Being in the Louisiana bayou added another layer to the story that I absolutely loved! And Prophet's alligator issues.....downright hilarious!

S.E. Jakes does an amazing job juggling the suspense, romance, humor, seriousness, tension and sexiness in this series. You are completely engrossed by the story from the very first page of each book. It's a lot of information being thrown at you, but every piece is an intricate part of the bigger puzzle and when things start slowly coming together....

I'm only half way through the series, but I CANNOT wait to see how this is going to turn out! I have suspicions, about a million questions and dozens of theories....but I have a feeling that nothing will be obvious and S.E. Jakes will keep us guessing until the very end.

There's still so much more for these two to work through...and I can't wait to see how they tackle the ghosts coming their way.

"Gonna watch all your secrets tumble out onto the floor. Watch it get messy and ugly. And you know what? Afterward, I'll still be here, because I'm done running from us."

3? 4? Hell...(and high water)

There were things I liked and things I thought were weaksauce.

Most of my gripes have to do with these two characters who are, in my opinion, circling the jacktard block. I've said multiple times that miscommunication isn't a deal-breaker for me, but miscommunication/non-communication as a plot device that's hammered over and over again just because is.

They say they want to be together but they don't act like it. They say they trust each other but they don't act like it. They say they want to be partners but they go off halfcocked by themselves ALL THE TIME! For me to believe it I need to see it for myself and there are glimpses but then it's like 1 step forward, 6,294,174,507 steps back.

Tommy opened up about his past but he seems to be stuck on Prophet quid pro quoing and it's just not the same! This became so frustrating for me. Prophet's a former SEAL and ex-CIA and if he talks about his past he risks the lives of others. Period. The end. Or it should be but Tommy is like a dog with a bone. Just stop it already.

What they do have is chemistry and a hankering for some switchy kinky fuckery that I'm not mad at. Which was proven right off the bat when these two didn't even let a hurricane stop them from punching their one way tickets to Pound Town. A HURRICANE!!!!!

Exhibit B to send this thing to the judge for a ruling on this open and shut Crazy Train case is the gator "whispering" that Tommy did. *mutters crazy assed Cajun*

The problem I'm having is I like these guys and I kinda want to encase them in duct tape at the same time. They're both witty and funny and it's clear they would bend over backwards for those they care about which are all qualities I like in my MCs. So I'm stuck on whether or not I want to continue with this series. Again as with Catch a Ghost, I liked the case in this one but I thought it ended anticlimactically.

I like Cillian, I think. Some of the other secondary characters I'm curious about and I kind of want to know how this whole thing between them is going to pan out.

But... you knew it was coming.

Seriously, who edited this thing? Names are misused. Words are misplaced in sentences. And there are long stretches of dialogue without denoting who's who to the point where I had to backtrack multiple times to make sure I wasn't confusing who was saying what.

So... IDK. I'm very confused about this read and my feels on it which makes me have a sad since so many of my friends love it super hard. Then again, I guess I have time since apparently the end has been postponed indefinitely.

Wow... just wow.

Prophet and Tom are a serious competition to Ty and Zane!!! Their chemistry is like dynamite!!!

I loved the first book, and I think this one is even better! Tom and Prophet intrigued me in Catch a Ghost and I couldn't wait to get my hands on Long Time Gone.

It’s been four months since Tom and Prophet have seen each other. Tom works still with EE and is now running missions with his new partner Cope. Of course he can't forget Prophet. So what does he do? He sends him emails. Every fucking day.

Prophet has officially quit EE and decides one day to finally read all of Tom’s emails. That’s when he makes the decision to stop running from Tom and from what they could be together. When he finds out that Tom’s aunt needs help because of an oncoming hurricane, he heads out to help her.

Tom has the same idea and heads to Louisiana. That’s when these two meet again and how they meet.

Holy. Fucking. Hell!!!

Their reunion is one of the hottest scenes I've read. Ever! Tom and Prophet are as drawn to each other as ever, and both their chemistry and banter are beyond awesome.

In between trying to find a murderer and looking for Tom's childhood best friend, Etienne, Prophet and Tom have a few serious discussions about where they’ve been the past months, and where they want to be in the future.

The supporting charcters just cracked me up. Blue and Mick are so awesome together and we hear more about Cillian and Mal. And there are Dave and Roger, the old gay couple, I laughed tears while reading their Tumble porn comments.

“Were we ever that beautiful?”
“You still are,” Roger told him. “Maybe we should make the most of the hurricane.”

The story is fabulous and well-written. There are smoking hot scenes, mystery and twists and the characters are exciting (and fucking hot!). It’s obvious there is more to come with this series and I can't wait for book three!

Mal and Cillian are next on the list in Dirty Deeds and my greedy self can’t wait for their story either. :)

Audio edition, narrator Adam North.
7 hours 50 min

Overall: 4,5
Performance: 3,5
Story: 4

Such a good book! I love Prophet and Tommy! I really enjoyed listening to this audio. I still don't think Adam North's voice for Tommy is "right", but pfft, who cares when the story is so good.
Lots of story, lots of hotness! Great to get to know more about Tommy. And their feelings are so strong for each other, even though they don't really talk about them. Actions are louder than words. :)
Love, looove the ending of this book! When the realization hit I broke up in goose bumps and got misty eyed. I had forgotten about it and hearing it narrated, was just awesome.
Looking forward to start the audio for #3.
Recommended!

**** 4 hottest reunited stars ****

-------------------
Staying away from me might've ensured we'd both be fine, but we weren't happy. And I'd take happy over safe any day."
-------------------

Ah, YES! I liked this book much better than Catch a Ghost since Tom and Prophet aren't so angry in this one. They reunite and holy smokes they do!! That scene in the storming rain? Hot, hot, HOT!

-------------------
"What the hell did you do to me, T?" Hadn't realized he'd asked Tom outright until he heard,
"Same thing you did to me."
-------------------

The story is still intricate and interesting. We learn more about Tom's past in the bayou and his "voodoo shit" (Prophet's words) in this one. The main series story is also continued. Tom and Prophet's relationship grows and develops. They are so perfect for each other! They're sex is off the charts! I learned to liked them in #1 Catch a Ghost, but I learned to love them here. They are so complex and have so much baggage, but the fit together so well. They are so tough, but still vulnerable with each other. They aren't men of few words. They let their actions speak for themselves.

-------------------
"You're so easy, Proph."
"For you."
There was so goddamn meaning behind those two little words, and the way Prophet said them, with a slight catch in his voice... those words said everything else he couldn't. Tom swallowed hard and tried to convey the same sentiment when he simply told Prophet, "Me too."
And then Prophet smiled mischievously.
"Can we fuck again so we don't have to talk? Because technically, what we did counts."
Tom laughed. "No, it doesn't. But we can fuck anyway."
-------------------

Oh, and that was after sex on top of a washing machine... during the spin cycle. :D

-------------------
Looking squarely into Tom's eyes, Prophet knew what--who-- he had a kink for. And the voodoo bastard knew it too.
Knew it. Liked it. Used it to his advantage whenever he could. Like now.
Because he knows you like it.
-------------------

And Prophet's real name is revealed! And I love the plot twist that comes with that!

-------------------
His own fucking personal tornado.

Review coming soon from The Blog of Sid Love.

Prophet and Tom have taken over the top spot on my favorite hot alpha damaged guys list. When we left them in Catch a Ghost, things were kind of in limbo with each going separate ways. Thank goodness, we did not have to wait very long to see them again. Proph has been somewhat busy doing his secretive black ops missions while Tom has been trying to adjust to life with his new partner, Cope. Even though Tom was the one to walk away, he has tried to get back in touch with Proph, to no avail. His daily heartfelt emails have gone unanswered, as have all of his other attempts.

Then, when a hurricane threatens New Orleans and the home where Tom’s aunt lives, Prophet heads there to help out, knowing Tom would be unable to get there. What ensues during that hurricane is a hurricane of a whole other nature. Prophet and Tom actually meet up, and when they do, the sparks fly stronger than ever before. There are some majorly hot scenes once these guys get back in the same location, let me tell you. What really steals the show for me though, is the dialog between them. There are so many great conversations, both hilarious and sexy, and even some that are quite sad. OMG, the alligator stuff was brilliant. Through the mess these guys (mostly Tom) find themselves in, we learn more about Tom’s past and some of the many things he had to endure growing up.

If you are just picking this series up now, you might be a bit disappointed, or even be scratching your head wondering what all the fuss is about. These guys have a lot of sex when they have it, and there are a couple of clichés (marking and “mine”) that ordinarily drive me a little nuts. However, when you know these guys, especially Prophet, from the beginning, you don’t question it, nor dislike it. There is so much to them, with each having such horrible pasts, the kind of men they are now, and the lives they now lead. Tom has been the only one able to learn about and show us some of the secrets and mysteries of Prophet, and I loved that we were able to learn more about him. He still has many more, but by the end, I was happy with the details we were given, even though I still long for more.

Tom and Proph are still fighting the feelings they each have that even though they long to be together, they each feel the other will be safer (for different reasons) if they are apart. This doesn’t change, though they seem to be willing to work through it if at all possible.

We meet a lot of great, and some not so great, characters while in New Orleans. We get to see Blue and Mick again, and there are more great interactions with Cillian. Most importantly to me though, we learn more about Proph’s mysterious ex-SEAL team, and I want information on them almost as badly as I wanted it on Proph. I’m really looking forward to the next book and am more than ready to see Mal give Cillian a run for his money. Tommy and Proph still have more to tell though, so I’m eager to see them again as well.

This was another fabulous, well-written and well put together story from page one right up to the end. There are smoking hot scenes, mystery and twists, with exciting characters and a great storyline. Keep up the good work, Ms. Jakes!

Book (reread) and Audio reviews:

Review – Book: I never would have believed that another series could even compete with the boys from the Cut & Run series, but Prophet and Tommy are the real deal, and not only can they compete, but in some ways they are so much better. Move over Ty and Zane, there is a new team in town and they are absolutely giving you a run for your money. Wow, I’m blown away here.

In this installment, Prophet and Tommy are reunited after they went separate ways in Catch a Ghost. Tommy went AWOL, Prophet is freelancing his black ops jobs, and both ended up in New Orleans to help Tommy’s aunt during the Hurricane. Let me tell you, when these two meet up again, you’d better have a fire extinguisher ready, because they were on fire….OMG, I will never be able to look at rain again without thinking of Prophet and Tommy. That scene set the tempo for this book and it never faltered, not even once.

One of the best parts of this book is actually the dialogue. Simply brilliant writing by SE Jakes, and I so wish the rest of the series was coming soon because once I finish these next few audio’s I am going to want the rest of the story. She brings these guys to life, makes them so real you feel as if you could reach out and touch them. They are not perfect, they both have issues that they need to address and work through, and both have secrets that need to be revealed to bring their relationship together. A lot of Tommy’s horrible past is revealed in this book, and we start in on Prophet’s. Wow, again, not what I was expecting, but it works and works well.

One of my favorite parts of this book, no scratch that, my favorite part of this book is the alligator kink. Oh my God, you will laugh your ass off at Prophet and all the alligator comments, and then the aftermath..the holy hotness alligator kink between him and Tommy. Trust me, it works! I need that fire extinguisher again, please.

We also have the text message interaction between Prophet and Cillian, those two are a riot together. I can’t wait to reread when Mal and Cillian meet…they are explosive, and will be burning up the sheets.

And wasn’t Mal a surprise from Prophet’s past, a good one, but a surprise nonetheless. And the other guys from Prophet’s past, these guys are going to make the rest of this series perfect, I just know it. Please, please tell me there is more to come. This reread, or listen, as it was an audio, just reiterated how much I want this series to get back on track…I miss these guys.

This book ends on a much higher note than Catch a Ghost, and I am more than ready to move on to the next phase in the partnership of Prophet and Tommy. Just knowing that Prophet is willing to give them a chance makes the heart happy. These two are the real deal, and I am ready to be wowed some more in the next book.

Overall Impression: It was Amazing (5 stars)

Review – Audio Book: How can I love a book so much, but can’t stand the audio? I have tried and tried to put the voice of the narrator to the characters, but they just don’t fit. I can’t fault the narrator, he does an admirable job of bringing passion and intensity to the story and the characters, but his voice is just not the voice I hear in my head when I read the book. I highly recommend the book but I can’t recommend the audio.

Overall Impression: It was okay, but not good (2 stars)

I am glad I didn't stumble upon this series before this book was out. With the amazingly WTF ending of the first book, I'm not sure how I would have coped.

This book primarily takes place in New Orleans and we get a lot of Tommy's history. Also, it looks as though Prophet is done running. He's been taking side jobs since he left EE and was nearly pulled so far under he would have never found his way out.

Prophet and Tommy. They are so amazing together - in bed and out of it. They're one of those couples that are strong as individuals, but so much stronger together. They are both very Alpha, but they both also really like and are good at taking care of the other when needed. They are both very adept at either roll. And I don't think either of them have had anyone to take care of them before. And they clear the air a lot in this book.

Prophet and Tommy are quickly becoming one of my favorite book couples. Definitely right up there with Ty and Zane.

*big sigh*

I just... I dunno. I don't get it. What's the big deal? This was just, well...

meh

I don't know if it's the characters or the story but I cannot connect. It feels like I'm being given too much information. There are too many names thrown in. Too many unnecessary details. And the information I need in order to understand the plot better isn't given to me. I don't even think the sex is all that hot.

I felt bombarded by so much (what seemed to me) useless information that it left me quite confused. My brain kept trying to process it but it just wasn't coming together for me.

I do like Prophet though. He's very snarky.

So, yeah. Meh.

Wall sex, Washing machine sex, Floor sex, and bed sex.

You know...the important stuff.
Holy damn, this book was a roller-coaster.

Love Love Love these two men. I'm loving revisiting them and their story.

It's nonstop suspense from the first moment till the epilogue and THIS IS HOW IT IS DONE!

Did I mention the sex?

Wowza, wowza, wowza. I thought Catch a Ghost was incredible, then along came Long Time Gone, the second in the Hell or High Water series. I can not do a review that will do this justice.

Tommy and Prophet have been separated for 4 months. Neither has been able to forget the other, but Tommy tries with new partner Cope working for EE. Proph tries with black ops jobs that have danger quotients off the charts. They are brought back together by a hurricane that threatens Tommy's Aunt Della in New Orleans. Proph decides he will go down to Aunt Della, bringing every thing one could need to survive. What he doesn't know is Tommy is headed that way, too. Or did he? The meeting is marred by Tommy being charged with the murder of a man who shares Tommy's past. The past and the present converge to expose Tommy and Prophet's secrets. Finally, the reader is allowed to see what formed these two complex men.

Many secrets are revealed and some are still hidden. I found myself repeating over and over, "come on guys get it together, you love each other and you are good for each other". There is a great supporting cast, with the author setting the scene for Cillian and Mal to come forward in future books. The sex is amazing, the action full throttled. If that isn't enough, there is the bonus of learning Prophet's real name.

I have to say that this is the first time I have found a couple that challenges Ty and Zane for best couple ever. For me Tommy and Prophet are the best couple ever. No that is not blasphemy, read it and see! Put Creedence Clearwater Revival on while you read this. Born on the Bayou was perfect.

***Listened to the audio for second time. Adam North has really gotten into the soul of these characters. The audio is awesome just like the book. I miss S.E. Jakes writing. I could use some new Tommy and Prophet**

Long Time Gone (Hell or High Water, #2) by S.E. Jakes Long Time Gone (Hell or High Water Book 2)

Despite the hot needy creative sex, I still had trouble really caring for these guys. Everything was there, the story made sense, they had angst and issues and guns and kink, so it was good. I think the sentimentality seemed out of character, and much of the story was over the top, creating a cartoony, non-realistic feel for me. They also were just hiding out much of the time, going over 'the issues' again and again. BUT it's worth the read for the hurricane, wall, floor, washer scene alone.
