My Hot Date

Rate this book
In 'My Hot Date', Noah delivers a great autobiographical comic. Covering his youth in suburban Phoenix as a poor, skateboarding, poser who gets his first 'hot date', this comic contains all the humor, sadness, empathy, and honesty we've come to expect from every comic this guy puts out. A true classic.

I am THE one and only Noah Van Sciver, cartoonist/comic strip artist and illustrator. I’m best known for my alternative comic book series Blammo and my weekly comic strip 4 Questions which appears every week in the alternative newspaper Westword. My work has appeared in The Best American comics 2011, Mad magazine, Sunstone, The Comics Journal, MOME and numerous comics anthologies. I’m currently hard at work on my first graphic novel The Hypo which will be published by Fantagraphics books upon its completion. I’m a cancer and I hate seafood, and adventure.

I picked this up at CAKE, the annual alternative comics nerd/hipster gathering here in Chicago. I say "gathering" because it is by no means a convention, it's not Comic Con, no cosplay, no celebrities, no actors from Agents of Shield. The big names here (it's still going on today!) include Chet Brown, whose work I know well, and who I stood in line to buy his latest from. Nick Drnaso was there to sign copies of Beverly. Lisa Hanawalt. People that wouldn't be recognized at ComicCon, maybe, but my people! When I was talking to Chet Brown (!) he noticed I had a copy of My Hot Date and he remarked, "Are you reading his stuff?! Isn't he great?"

Yes, Noah Van Sciver is great. As you can see from the cover of his autobiographical/memoir comic, his skinny butt wouldn't be noticed next to Thor. Which is kind of the point. He's us. He's not escapist comics, he's us, he's fragile, vulnerable, self-deprecating, funny. My Hot Date is of course NOT about a hot date, but about his first date with a girl he had "met" online on AOL, some chatroom where they are trying out identities. He's living in bleak Mesa, 1998, he's sort of a lame skater punk, talking ghetto with his poser friends, teens drinking beer and talking about girls they have no chance with. He's poor because his Dad left them and his Mom has to work all the time; he has one pair of saggy pants. He wears what he calls a strong of ridiculous "anal beads" around his neck all the time. A full page shows him in 1998, making fun of what he was wearing then. He's almost scarily scrawny. I was once that scrawny, as a teen!

The family has one computer, dial up, with which to contact his "girlfriend" Colleen, who as it turns out is pretty cute if not hot and certainly cooler than Noah and out of his league entirely. So what is this book? A short comic in the manner of Jeffery Brown's books about girls, such as Every Girl is the End of the World for Me. Loser comics--which is a designation I say with affection, as they are my people--slice of life and endearing and sort of sweet.

Van Sciver is an incredible artist and storyteller. This comic contains a great story from his adolescence that is funny and cringe worthy. I too was an awkward teen. I too have fumbled through relationships. Seek this one out and support indie publishers like Kilgore.

Possibly/probably my favorite comic by Van Sciver to date. It's got all of the elements of his most successful work rolled up into one comic. Fantastic writing, incredible artwork, humor, pathos, self-deprecation. Noah didn't seem to enjoy his childhood, but it certainly makes for good story fodder.

I finally read this comic by Noah. I recently got the new updated version released by Kilgore’s recent Kickstarter program. It includes some other stories than the first edition I believe. Each one is personal, moving, and well told by an artist who has honed their craft. Noah can tell you a story that is painfully honest, and then have you laughing uncontrollably. His style is really good too and I love what he does with the coloring. I’m glad to have read this book and I’ll be glad to look over this again. If you haven’t picked this up yet try and do so. Especially if you enjoy Noah’s other content.

A bleak, beautiful and accurate depiction of what it was like to be a shitty teen in the late 90s.

This book is so funny and captures the spirit of being a teenager in the late 90s perfectly. Jnco jeans, meeting girls on AOL, and being clueless to how stupid you were.

Kudos to Noah Van Sciver from not shying away from the embarrassments of youth. This book is unrelentingly cringeworthy but hilarious. It's the repeated earnestness in NVS's comics that always have me coming back for more. That, and the great artwork too.

Sad if only because it is a vague reflection of myself...
