“Bob Marley: The Life of a Musical Legend” (Graphic Biographies) by Gary Jeffrey & Terry Riley. ****
Bob Marley (1945-1981) grew up in the run-down areas west of Kingston, one of which was called Trench Town. Some homemade cardboard shacks were built on the Dungle, a settlement that doubled as the city dump. (p5)
Bob Marley would go on to dramatically change the world. One of his final songs was 'Redemption Song' which included the following lyrics:
'How long shall they kill our prophets While we stand aside and look? Ooh Some say it's just a part of it We've got to fulfill the Book.' (p41) - - -
This book is a biography. I think the theme of the book is peace. Bob Marley was all about world peace. He just wanted everyone to get along with each other. The book is about how Bob comes from living in the poor part of town to the person who was before he died. Bob started performing on the streets. Him and some of his friends started performing together and started a band. The band got a couple record deals and didn't really go anywhere. After a while the band broke up and Bob was alone. Bob became Rastafarian. A religion very popular in Jamaica at the time. He was all about being peaceful and not going to war. Bob Marley was a famous singer. He was very popular for his style of music. His music was very inspirational for people and still is today. Bob was very caring, laid back, and overall just a great guy. This book is very inspirational and shows how people can do anything if you put your mind to it. Some things that people didn't like about Bob was one of his performances before a presidential event. People thought it was to persuade people to vote for one of the candidates. Overall this is just a great book. I would recommend it to everyone that likes Bob Marley.
I personally enjoyed this book other than because of my passionate love of bob marley because it explains very well the things that bob marley went through in his life not only as a musician but as a person. This book is very good for those people who like to know the life of real artists before they become what they are or what they were. Overall this book was very well written and had a great ending to it. This is ONE of my favorite books now and I usually don’t read these kind of books but I really enjoyed this book. I might look forward to reading more books just like this. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested In these kinds of books or is just looking to read something a little different than what they usually read.
