Restoring Christmas

Rate this book
Alexis Blake has one chance to land her own show on the Home Project Network and nothing—not an uncooperative client, a job site without indoor plumbing, or a challenging videographer—is going to stand in her way. Elsie, at seventy-plus, is far from the ideal client, but she knows exactly what she wants her fieldstone house to look like, and no designer can tell her otherwise. Gabe Langley, the man with the camera, is caught in the middle and it is his wisdom and warmth that just may be the bridge that will bring these two women together. Can they restore more than just a house and bring about special, almost lost forever Christmas memories?

I loved this Christmas tale! Alexis, a designer, has her plan: restore an aging widow’s home for a slot at a home-improvement reality show with a Christmas theme. When she arrives in tiny Algoma, things instantly begin to go wrong, starting with the videographer she was supposed to use.

There’s some romance in the book, but I felt it takes a second place to the heart-felt story of getting Elsie’s place restored and finding out how to pry open Elsie’s scarred heart, which is just the way I like it. This is a beautiful story about the true meaning of kinship and giving, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Where to even start?

This is one of my favorite books ever! I loved everything about it: the characters, the setting, the story... I couldn't think of a better to get into the Christmas mood this year. So if you're looking for your first Christmas book of the year, look no further! You just found it! :)

Now with that being said, I need to review this book.
Let's be honest, at the beginning of the book I wanted to shake Alexis quite a few times. She was just so negative and gloomy and focused on her TV show. But I LOVED her journey throughout the book and honestly I think the lesson Alexis learned is a lesson we all need to learn at one point.
Gabe, on the other hand, was my favorite character. He is so funny and sweet, but he does too carry a heavy burden. Let's just say that I felt privileged to walk through this journey with them (and let's not forget Elsie, who had her fair share of change too).

If you want to get in the Christmas mood, the real Christmas mood, not the commercialized Christmas spirit, but get back to the basic, well this story we do just that for you. Let's face it, we all need to restore Christmas in our lives!

A big thanks to the author for providing me with a complimentary copy! It did not affect my review in any way!

A heartwarming tale set along the beautiful shore of Lake Michigan in the fall, a perfect place for a holiday story! My heart was definitely full and satisfied after reading this lovely novella.
Fans of home restoration shows will really enjoy this, as the main characters come together to complete a house project in time for a Christmas special, hoping to win a competition. The stakes are high, especially for Alexis, the designer who hopes to succeed and further her fledgling career. Nothing seems to go smoothly, but God has other plans in store.

The three main characters, Alexis, Gabe and Elsie, each had their own backstory, and a need for some personal restoration. As each one was revealed, it added a lot of depth to the plot and led neatly into spiritual themes, like forgiveness, restoring faith, peace and hope in their lives, and learning to genuinely love others, particularly the unlovable. A good reminder that everyone has a story, and seeing them through God's "eyes" helps us to be compassionate. Love how this author uses word pictures to describe scenes, connecting them with spiritual truths, like the backdrop of a peaceful snowy landscape while Alexis is struggling for inner peace. She realizes that "God wasn't commanding her to be at peace. He was offering it as a gift." The writing flows so well, with just enough detail, making it easy to picture everything; felt like I was actually there. Could almost smell the coffee and cherry strudel!

Highly recommend this touching inspirational Christmas story, with a little brushing of romance!

Before I gush about how much I love this latest book from Cynthia Ruchti (because I do and so I shall), I have to first mention GABE. Oh my heart. My book boyfriend collection has a new addition. Gabe Langley is sweet and hilarious and charming in that boyish sort of way but boy does some great wisdom come out when he decides to be serious. From their meet-cute to their daily interactions to the moment when romance becomes more than a possibility, Gabe and Alexis need each other (even when Alexis would argue otherwise) and watching them fall in love is both heartwarming and grin-inducing. And the way he keeps brushing his thumb across his cheek after she kisses him there is so adorably swoonworthy.

Every book I read by Cynthia Ruchti becomes a favorite. Each word is perfectly placed, each emotion aptly timed, each character vividly drawn, and each truth tenderly presented. Never sappy, Ruchti’s stories are full of wry humor and sweet reminders of grace. These books, these characters, go soul-deep and take up permanent residence.

In Restoring Christmas, we get a front row seat as Alexis attempts to restore an old house as part of a reality TV competition (think HGTV). Much to her chagrin, she finds herself at the mercy of an unexpected cameraman, unplanned lodging, and an uncooperative home owner. And somewhere along the way – through the ups and downs of home restoration and TV show filming – her work with Gabe on Elsie’s house becomes more about restoring their souls than the wood or paint.

The beauty of the Christmas dinner scene is one of the most touching Christmasy scenes I’ve read, and it brought treasured memories to mind of singing “Silent Night” with our international students – each in their own language, us in English, all singing at once. The tears flowed through this whole scene, for many reasons, and it’s the perfect way to show off the restoration – of the house and of the hearts of those connected to it.

Bottom Line: If you’re a fan of home restoration shows, then you’ll love Restoring Christmas. More than just a sweet romance or an uplifting story worthy of the Hallmark channel (though it would be the perfect choice for their Christmas lineup!), Cynthia Ruchti’s latest takes a grace-filled look at grief, insecurity, addiction, abuse, loneliness, and dementia. With her exquisite talent, she offers us a delightful tale that will warm your heart – and maybe even restore it too. Additionally, the hardcover is just lovely and makes a great addition to your bookshelf or coffee table.

"Impossible. So that meant God had an idea when Alexis didn't."

When interior designer Alexis Blake won the opportunity to enter an eight week long "Restoring Christmas" home redesign contest, she was full of possibilities. . . . until, she met her stand-in videographer and the stubborn, prickly homeowner. Elsie wanted change without changing, while Gabe Langley's effervescent optimism was mildly annoying and surprisingly adorable.

After a series of unfortunate events, Gabe asks Alexis the million dollar question, " Ask yourself if your assignment is to 'reinvent' Christmas or to 'restore' it." After all, the baby in the manger was "mercy's abundance made visible to us."

An absolutely mesmerizing little story abounding in grace and overflowing with smiles! Just think "cat-astrophic"!

Restoring Christmas by Cynthia Ruchti is a beautiful contemporary Christian romance. Cynthia Ruchti writes the most delightful novels that draw me in from the very first page and keep me hooked to the end. Her novels are always honouring God and contain wonderful characters. Her words always warm my heart.
Restoring Christmas is about restoring the real meaning of Christmas. "Restoring what's been damaged - the human-God connection." It is about the gift of hope to a hurting world. "Hope isn't always shiny." Hope is what can bring a smile to our faces and a beat to our heart.
The novel is about a restoration project - both literally and figuratively. All three main characters - Elsie, Alexis, Gabe - have pasts and hurts from which they need healing and restoration. God is in the business of restoring lives and what could be more perfect than restoration at Christmas?
The real meaning of Christmas is not in the food, the tree, the presents. "Christmas is more of a launch pad than a destination." The real meaning is wrapped up in a baby - Jesus who came to die for our sins. "Perfect conditions would have been nice but He came anyway." Life is not always perfect but with Jesus by our side we can navigate our way through life.
Faith in God is important. "Trust the Trustworthy One" is the advice given. Sometimes all we can do in life is cling to God. "A person often feels the compulsion to pray at that very moment when they haven't got a prayer." When there are no words, God hears the cry of our hearts.
The novel deals with the tough topics of addiction and domestic abuse. The fall-out from both of these can be devastating for those around. The characters affected have overcome their pasts by sheer will power, strength of character and God. The victims have become survivors.
To have loved and lost is another theme within the story. Grief can be a difficult path to walk, especially during the first year. "Reminders and grief walk the same fence line."
Circumstances do not define us. As Elsie says "I'm not 'a widow'...I'm a woman who has been 'widowed'." We find out who we are in God not in our circumstances.
There is the difficult topic of senile dementia. Elsie's father has the condition. When asked why she visits him she replies "I visit my father because I know who he is." This just tugged at my heart strings.
Restoring Christmas is a wonderful warm novel with characters who feel more like friends. Elsie has lived and is now vulnerable. Beneath that hard crust beats a heart of gold. Alexis past has made her vulnerable but she presses on. Gabe has a vulnerable side but is full of humour and laughter. These three collide in the novel to create a perfect storyline.
Love permeates the novel. It is a deep, gentle love for one's fellow human beings. It is a love that can turn a house into a home. It is "good memories bought home."
Cynthia Ruchti always writes stories that just sink into my soul. I love her characters. I love her plotlines. I love her settings. Restoring Christmas is not just for Christmas. It is the perfect read all year round. It will restore your faith in humanity. It will strengthen your walk with God. It will speak to your soul.
As with all Cynthia Ruchti's novels the end of Restoring Christmas has left me wanting more.
If you have never read a novel by Cynthia Ruchti you are definitely missing out. Buy Restoring Christmas today. It will bless your heart and soul.
Delightful and heart warming.

Finished this with tears streaming down my face. Beautiful job, Cynthia! Full review coming soon.

Christmas can't be relaxing when you're trying to ratchet your career up to the next level. Interior designer Alexis Blake is competing for her own show on the Home Project Network, and the last step is a Christmas-themed home renovation. If she can beat out the other two finalists she'll achieve her dream. She knows things won't be easy, but she arrives on location near Door County, Wisconsin, to find that the homeowner doesn't want to cooperate and her videographer has sustained an injury that will sideline him from the project. This is not a promising start.

Elsie has lived many years in the fieldstone home which her father built. She's not happy that her neighbor submitted her house for the Restoring Christmas project, and she's very set on having her say in making sure Alexis doesn't change too much. She's also prone to taking mysterious trips and will shut down any conversation that broaches the subject of family. She begins to regret her begrudging consent to allow Alexis and the crew into her personal space.

While respected videographer George Langley can't be a part of the special, he insists his son Gabe is more than capable of stepping in. Alexis isn't convinced, but Gabe is larger than life with his optimism and generosity. As he sweeps away her objections and finds unusual solutions to plaguing problems, Alexis agrees to let him in on the project, but can't help wondering what's behind all the charm and personality.

While Elsie's house is under construction, so are the hearts of all those working on it. Gabe is dealing with his first Christmas since his mother's death. Alexis feels the stress and pressure of meeting deadlines and having everything turn out the picture-perfect way she's envisioned it - while meeting resistance from Elsie at every turn. Elsie's shrouded past and sensitivity to change keeps everyone guessing and on edge as to what she'll object to next.

In a story about the true meaning of Christmas and learning to listen to one another, Cynthia Ruchti has crafted a heartwarming novella that will leave you sighing with contentment. I'd highly recommend this for all readers, and especially if you enjoy shows like Fixer Upper. This story introduced me to the song Still, Still, Still, which I have a feeling will be a regular feature on my holiday playlist this year. Are you ready to have your own heart examined before we reach the height of this busy season? Check out "Restoring Christmas" and let the message soak into your spirit.

Thank you to the author for my copy of the novella. All opinions in this review are my own.

This is a delightful novella. Ruchti is a master story teller and she shines in this touching story.

Alexis is a home interior designer who has a chance to make it big – if she can land a spot on the Home Project Network Restoring Christmas special. But her aspirations hit a few roadblocks. The videographer she hired is down with back pain and Alexis has to settle for his son, Gabe. Then the woman for whom she is doing the remodel is an older woman hiding a world of hurt. How Alexis and Gabe help her work through her pain tugs at the heart.

Ruchti has done an excellent job developing the characters within a great setting. It was fun to see Alexis face her motives in doing the remodel. My favorite character was Gabe. Besides having a great eye behind the video camera, he is an amazing man. He is godly and has an interesting sense of humor.

And that brings up another fun aspect of this novel, the humor. It was frequent in the novel and often made me laugh out loud. Much of it came from the snappy dialogue between Alexis and Gabe.

I highly recommend this novella as a great one to read during this Christmas time. I have read a number of novels by Ruchti and this may be her best one yet. The story is heartwarming. The small town Wisconsin setting is wonderful. The characters will draw you in and keep you interested. The hint of romance is fun. The message of God being in the restoration business is encouraging. Be sure to have your tissues ready as you near the end, however.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Alexis finally has a shot at making her design company a working business. All she has to do is meet the videographer and set a time to go see the home belonging to a woman named Elsie. Once Alexis turns in the completed video with the finished home she has a chance to win a spot on a tv program and get her business name out to potential clients. But the day doesn't begin well when the videographer sends his son instead. And it certainly isn't a good thing that the homeowner was tricked into having her home on the show and isn't happy about any of the changes Alexis wants to make. Alexis must learn to adapt, listen, and love in the spirit of Christmas if she stands a chance at the tv show and also a shot at love.

This was a wonderful book. The story line is original, the descriptions pull you into the book, the characters are well defined and are authentic. I loved all of the characters. The author did such a great job of making them likable while still having flaws. The characters took a journey of the heart and each one of them became different people because of the experience. The author was able to pull me into their story and have me feel their emotions and experience their journey with them. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys feel good stories with some heartfelt issues thrown in. I'm glad I had the chance to read this book.

Restoring Christmas was an absolute delight of a read! A sweet love story that made me smile and chuckle out loud while tugging on my heart at the same time. I loved the sweet heart melting romance between two wonderful characters. I loved the contrast in personalities and how they meshed.

When I found out where Elsie disappears to for hours and days at a time it brought a tender tear to my eye. No plot spoilers here but I do have to wonder if the author will delve into another story based on what we learn about how she came to be named Elsie?

A couple of favorite quotes: “The goosebumps weren’t from the cold. Love and kindness – in abundance- kept her in a state of awe”. And another one was “If an enlarged heart could be a healthy thing, that’s how Alexis would describe this sensation.”

This is a sweet endearing heart-fluttering Christmas romance. Please Hallmark – make this one a movie! Oh, and probably one of THE best endings ever. It left me smiling and wanting more!

This is a Christmas/Holiday story that will stir your emotions in many ways. It is a story of forgiveness, faith, understanding, peace, love and or course restoration of the spirit all rolled into a story a bout a home renovation project.

The three main characters, Alexis, Gabe and Elsie, each had their own backstory, and a need for some personal restoration. Alexis is trying to win the coveted spot on a Christmas renovation television show to kick start her design business, Gabe is taking over his father's videography business while he recovers from an accident and Elsie is trying to get some much needed work done on her fieldstone farmhouse for free. As we get to know each of the characters we learn about their past and how it has affected their life. One of the most important things they have to do is learn to listen and trust one another, which is easier said than done. With unexpected disasters, an unco-operative and disappearing owner and some weather problems it seems that this project will never get completed. This book is a good reminder that everyone has a story, and seeing them through God's "eyes" helps us to be compassionate. The writing is beautiful and spiritual. There are many spots in the story where both Gabe and Alexis relate what is happening to the birth of Christ and there being no room for him. My only complaint is that you have to go to the website to read the epilogue but that was not a biggie for me. Another lovely story reminding us of the peace, joy and love that surrounds the Christmas Season.

This is my first reading of this book with author Cynthia Ruchti and pleased with 'Restoring christmas'
Widowed Elsie is having a home remodel referred to network contest by her neighbor. Can Elsie, Alexis, and Gabe come to a mutual understanding of what Elsie will allow them to do in this christmas remodel of her home. An endearing storyline with 'random acts of kindness' tugging at your heart.
as covid 19 is upon our country, we are homebound again with restrictions for crowd gatherings. Now, it's thanksgiving tomorrow and I have just finished this christmas choice of reading, to encourage me to decorate for christmas, since soft christmas lights are endearing during isolation with 2020 pandemic, what our priority should be during the holidays; and even this pandemic.

I love Christmas books, so this one was a must read and review for me when it came up as a review opportunity, and this one was worth reading.

There is a lot to like in this book: the characters, especially Gabe.....a really cool and different kind of guy for this type of book, the plot, the setting.....they all mesh to make a great story. I loved the idea of restoration in conjunction with Christmas, and the author did a great job of weaving that theme throughout the story and through the main characters' stories.

I also liked that the author gave her characters flaws, and that this isn't one of those stories filled with perfect people.

There is romance in the book, which I am not a big fan of, but it wasn't overdone nor "gushy", and I found myself rooting for it to happen.

Cynthia has written a great Christmas story that doesn't just emphasize THE Christmas story, but also has the message of restoration that is possible for all of us at Christmas and throughout the year.

My first Christmas book of the season! Such a great story of restoring a home, but also restoring your soul. God can do amazing things in our life, can't He?! This is a story of two characters on very different paths in their life, but they end up intertwined in a way only God could create. I enjoyed this story so much and love that I kicked off my Christmas-reading season with a story of so much hope. *I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.*

It was a sweet book, much like a Hallmark movie but with a slight Christian slant. It wasn't in your face Vacation Bible School but Jesus was mentioned (which doesn't happen in Hallmark movies) as were redemption and restoration. It was a great story and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Deb’s Dozen: Christmas House Contest, Anxious Decorator, Crotchety Client, Handsome Videographer—Recipe for Disaster?

Alexis Blake wants more than anything to win the Restoring Christmas contest with the Home Project Network, which would launch her career. She’s hired the best videographer she could find who lived near the house. Arriving in town, she discovers to her horror that he is not available and that his obnoxious, but handsome, son, Gabe is his replacement. Alexis is not certain about the arrangements—even more so when she meets Elsie, the owner of the house. Alexis sees nothing but disaster in her future as she struggles to make sense out of all the details comprising her task.

As they work, reluctantly, together on the project, Alexis starts to warm up to Gabe’s demeanor and cheerful attitude. That she is living in the Langley’s basement apartment due to a room shortage adds to the mix. Will they be able to convince Elsie to change her house? Will the contractors be able to complete all the work? Is Gabe as good as he and his dad say he is? What will she do about these strange feelings?

I loved Restoring Christmas. Cynthia Ruchti has another winner. You’ll want to buy the book—a cozy, well-written romance and just the book to curl up and read along with a hot cup of cocoa, a nice fire burning in the fireplace, and a fluffy, warm comforter. Four stars!

Cynthia Ruchti “tells stories hemmed in hope.” When I interviewed her at the International Christian Retail Show this past June and asked why this topic, she related she watches HGTV for relaxation. She finds the show a good study on relationships as things do or don’t go well. She also is a fan of Chip and Joanna Gaines and their show on fixer-uppers.
She’d been assigned to write a Christmas book and had to come up with a story. While driving, she saw some fieldstone houses and inspiration struck. The character of Alexis is a HGTV wannabe who has to produce an audition video in eight weeks. She and Gabe, the videographer, along with Elsie, the reluctant and mysterious client, think they’re merely restoring a house, but what God is doing is restoring each of them.

Worthy Inspired sent me an advance copy of this book, but I was under no obligation to write a favorable review.

Perhaps we watch home improvement shows too much or maybe we like to read a story that stays real and ends well. Either way, Cynthia Ruchti has offered us both in Restoring Christmas. Interior designer Alexis Blake has a shot at fame and a career that rises above the ordinary if she can get a home remodeled in eight weeks working with an unknown videographer, the aging homeowner and overcoming her own fears.

In her trademark style featuring short punchy one-word sentences that lift the character and theme, Ruchti again brings us a story that is believable. From the opening scenes describing the small Wisconsin town to the skillfully developed characters, readers are immediately drawn into Alexis’ life and will cheer for Gabe Langley as he woos this young woman seemingly without even knowing it.

Cynthia writes inventive sentences with original evocative descriptions. In her Wisconsin, autumn turns over the keys to a northland winter. And in a more serious scene, grief language is sticky-fresh, encased in the dampness of monarch’s wings. As a reader, I enjoyed the droll sarcastic sense of humor exhibited by all characters to one degree or another. This is the stuff of fun! Cynthia’s characters are funny, even at their worst. The foreshadowing woven through the chapters is not heavy handed. These hints unfold beautifully as one reads along. And everything corresponds to theme of remodeling, redecorating and restoring both home and humans.

I expected a neat clean book because it was short. I was not prepared for the depth that Ruchti plumbs into each character, scene and description. Every word is hand picked to build the themes of death and loss, control and letting go, listening or doing, covering or celebrating flaws, and the impossibilities that only God can overcome. “Impossible, So that meant God had an idea that Alexis didn’t.” Exactly.

Cynthia hits her stride in Restoring Christmas, an award-winning book, her best yet. Readers will hire Alexis and Gabe for their next restoration project, which I hope Cynthia already has planned!

Some Christmas books are excellent stories but I am never prompted to read them again. Some Christmas books are outstanding stories that I MUST read again and again. Restoring Christmas by Cynthia Ruchti is going to be one of the latter! I will read it again each Christmas season because it contains the truth of what Christmas should  be. Yes, it is fiction but the underlying theme relates the age-old story of God sending His Son to be our Savior; God sending His Son to restore our souls.

The main characters Alexis and Gabe are like many of us. Life and circumstances have left them hurt, battered and broken and they have struggled to find their "true North". This sweet story shows us Alexis' s reluctance to give in to her attraction to Gabe. This is a bit hard for me to understand because I loved his enthusiasm, his optimism, his sincerity and his very deep faith.

The author allows us to watch their relationship deepen as they work to restore the older home of another person  who has also suffered great hurt and difficulties. I hated to finish this story because I want to learn more. I want to watch their relationship grow;  I want to know if Elsie will be a part of their lives and yes, I want to see if Alexis and Gabe develop a successful working partnership.

Restoring Christmas is a timeless story to enjoy during this holiday season and to remember long after. Author Cynthia Ruchti has created some  wonderful thought-provoking quotes and she has painted beautiful pictures with her words. But most of all, she has reminded ME that none of us are beyond  restoration if we beieve in The Greatest Restorer of all!

I was excited to read Restoring Christmas by Cynthia Ruchti, because I've heard so many good things about her books. I definitely was not disappointed. I loved the setting and the premise of the story. The main character, Alexis, was focused on advancing her career in restoring old houses during the first part of the story. With the help of Gabe, the videographer, and the reluctant homeowner, Elsie, Alexis adjusts her initial vision for the house and feels the true spirit and meaning of Christmas. The characters were relatable and fun to get to know, and it was interesting to see how their attitudes toward the restoring of the house changed over the course of the story. The backstory of Elsie and her house added an extra dimension to the novella. This is a delightful, sweet, heart-warming novella that is a perfect read for the Christmas season.

I received a copy of this novella from NetGalley without obligation. This review is my honest opinion.

Restoring Christmas

Restoring Christmas in many different ways. Alexis is trying to restore Elsie house and being film for a home improvement show. She hires a person to film it but ends up his son Gabe shows up for the job. A lot of changes for everyone, they find more than just the house to restore for Christmas. The book was good all the way thru but really got good about halfway thru when things get discovered. One of those books that the characters stay with you. I received this book thru netgalley.

Interior designer Alexis Blake, based in Algoma, Wisconsin, is challenged to do a complete home remodel in just eight weeks, a project that could potentially put her name on the map in the home design industry. One other challenge -- the process is to be televised!

Alexis goes to meet with George Langely, a seasoned videographer she's hired to film the project. The surprise and dismay she's hit with when she discovers George has suffered a back injury that will have him out of service for a minimum of several weeks! George sends a Plan B in his stead: his grown son Gabe, also an experienced cameraman.

That's only the start of the hangups & hiccups of this reno. Alexis goes on to battle weather delays, crew disputes, and a myriad of stress sandwiches centered around a money pit of a farmhouse (the one Alexis is expected to turn around) and its cranky, elderly owner, Elsie Raymond. But let's not let Alexis off lightly. Nope, let's also add in her having to camp at the Langely residence when her hotel in town is hit by a skunk attack and no other rooms appear to be available anywhere else in town for the next eight weeks she needs to complete this challenge.

This little novel has a limited amount of space to present and then solve all these issues, but somehow our MC Alexis pulls through. Not well, mind you, not IMO... but she at least gets the job done on some level.

So how can I love the first Christmas story so much but leave this book with a 2 rating? Believe me, I'm as surprised and disappointed as you are! Not that this story didn't have its merits... there were just a lot of things that didn't work for me this time around. Let me break it down:

* Truth be told, Alexis is one seriously irritating MC most of the time. Nearly everything seems to annoy her on some level. Girl has zero chill. As charming as Gabe is, he deserves a better female counterpart.

* It also strikes me that Alexis is not all that great a designer if she's ONLY interested in foisting her own design plans on her client without listening --- really listening --- to any of their ideas, concerns, likes / dislikes, etc. She deems these kinds of clients as "uncooperative" and only seems concerned with advancing her career, not honestly taking into consideration that someone has to actually LIVE in the place after she leaves. Might want to incorporate at least a few things THEY might like. Just sayin'.

* I had a hard eyeroll when I read that Gabe and Alexis were inspired by real-life flippers Chip and JoAnna Gaines from HGTV's Fixer Upper. I know they have their fanbase, and if you're in that group -- here you go, this book's for you. I personally find them a bit cringe.

I loved Elsie, the prickly, elderly homeowner. She likes what she likes and is unapologetic about it. Her way of being endearing in a rough-around-the-edges way was adorable (if you've known those kinds of people in your life and know how to love them). I loved her reveal of where she goes when she takes off for days on end!

The jokes and dialogue ran somewhat corny. The Christmas holiday IS mentioned throughout this storyline, but the overall cozy vibes of the season were not as noticeable as in The Endless Christmas. That was my main issue with Restoring Christmas -- while I loved Elsie and the Langely men, much of the story was just so SLOW and DRY. For such a short book, I was struggling to just finish it already.

I also think it was a bad move on Ruchti's part to force readers to go online to find out the full ending to this book. Way to isolate and cheat some of your readership.

Using Joanna and Chip Gains as inspiration, Cynthia Ruchti has written an wonderful Christmas story. Restoring Christmas is a wonderful story of a young designer, Alexis, who is trying to win a spot on a TV show. She is paired up with an elderly lady,Elsie to renovate the ladies home for Christmas. She has hired a video photographer, George, to go through the renovation with her, but he has suffered a back injury and sends his son, Gabe, in his place.

Things just do not seem to be going as planned for Alexis. She arrives at her appointment to find the wrong video photographer waiting for her. She gets a call that her hotel has been skunked and she has no place to stay. And the owner of the home did not request to be involved, her neighbor made the request. And the home owner has her own opinions, including not to repair certain damages to the house. And to top that off, she has an accident that leaves her injured with only one good arm to finish the project with. That is not the end of her problems though. While Elsie is away over night, a cat gets in the house and manages to cause a flood that ruins the lower cabinets and wood flooring. With just a short time to get the home finished, Gabe and the construction crew get busy.

While digging through the barn to get the replacement flooring boards, Gabe stumbles across pictures that causes them to start digging into Elsie's past. George places a call to the care facility where Elsie's father is. They alert Elsie and she “fires” Alexis. But Alexis and Elsie have a contract. If Alexis is not able to finish the project, she will not have a chance to win the contest. And, she will be responsible for the cost of the renovation.

Even though Gabe is the video photographer, he also plays a big role in the project. Alexis comes all prepared to make over Elsie's house in a certain way, but when Elsie voices her displeasure, it is Gabe that helps Alexis understand this project is just as much about helping Elsie as it is about getting a show on a TV channel.

This is a very good, very easy to read novela with just 240 smaller than average pages. I liked how the author described the settings in the story. It made me feel cold just reading about the winds blowing off Lake Michigan. I could almost feel the dust when Gabe and Alexis were in the barn. I could feel Gabe's pain when Alexis jumped to conclusions when she is called to pick him up from the jail. But I was not prepared for the ending to the story, that can only be viewed online after reading the book. I have never seen this before, so this was a little awkward. Without the internet to read the end of the story, it is left unfinished. This could be a negative for some people.

I chose to read this book as I have lived through several house renovations. Very seldom do things go as planned. Adjustments have to be made constantly, and this story does a good job of showing that as well. There is so much that goes wrong during the story, but with God's help things always work out.

I received a copy of this book from Worthy Publishing and First Look Tours. This is my honest review.

I am one of those people who count down the days till Christmas. Who can’t wait to find the perfect tree, decorate my home to the hilt, and watch Hallmark Christmas movies beginning in October. But even if you’re not a fanatic like me, I’m certain you’ll enjoy this inspiring and heart-hugging story.

Eight weeks until the final scene at Christmas. Eight weeks that had seemed so short earlier that morning now stretched light-years into her shaky future. ~excerpt, pg. 11

Restoring Christmas, by Cynthia Ruchti, is a sweet romantic story filled with heart, home, and hope. Without being cheesy or sappy, these pages made me laugh and cry. They pulled my heartstrings and then wrapped them securely into a shiny Christmas bow.

Alexis Blake travels to Algoma, Wisconsin to restore an old home in need of a little tender loving care—and a lot of updating. She must film the process, and submit it to the Heart-and-Home Channel by the end of December for a chance at a spot on next year’s Restoring Christmas television special. If the filmed audition goes well, she might land her own show. Because she will pay out-of-pocket for the entire cost of construction, decorating, and filming, both her career, and sanity, teeters on the next eight weeks being productive and going as planned.

Well, those plans go awry shortly after Alexis arrives in the “Old Country” town. Esteemed videographer, George Langley, suffers a medical setback, and sends Gabe, his witty, slightly irritating, unprofessional looking son in his stead. Though she finds the flannel-wearing man somewhat attractive, in a lumberjack kind of way, what could he possibly know about professional videography? She envisions her career plummeting as fast as her bank account. Why can’t her life go smoothly—for once?

This story is littered with unexpected twists and revelations, and overflows with heart. When things can’t go wrong, they do, and when opposites attract, the light of Christmas shines. I love this story, and I expect you will too.

4.25 stars - very mild pg13 (reference to drug addiction)

Very enjoyable. Sweet ending. Loved Gabe!!! I found parts of the story were warm and hilarious and some parts brought tears to my eyes; yet, I also found a few parts to be awkward and uncomfortable (the initial “meet-cute” was probably meant to be unique and funny, but I found it to be silly and childish and sort of turned me off the heroine right from the beginning). The author has a unique, quirky writing style - sometimes the descriptions were spot-on and other times it just felt odd. I had a hard time warming to Alexis – she seemed stiff and just didn’t click with me, and some things she did just made no sense. I also had a hard time understanding her faith, or lack thereof. It was never made clear, really, what any of them believed – it was all sort of vague – could have easily fit in the LDS book market instead of the Christian market, it seemed more inspirational than evangelical. There was a sweet, clean, good message about being restored and rooted in God, but even it was somewhat vague. “Restoration” is a great theme, but I don’t recall it ever being explained that that restoration comes through Christ alone; and looking back, (?) I’m not sure His name was even mentioned until the last paragraph of the author’s acknowledgments at the back pages of the book.

There were some lovely lines in this book -- some funny, some sweet and poignant. Here are a few of them:

”A waitress set a blue-green and chocolate brown pottery mug in front of the irritant. … He sipped his coffee drink and dabbed at the resulting foam mustache with the cloth napkin. It was still wrapped around his eating utensils.” < -- Hah! Alexis refers to Gabe as “the irritant”. (Also love the author’s descriptive words, I can totally picture the mug and then Gabe using his rolled up napkin.)

“God wasn’t commanding her to be at peace. He was offering it as a gift.”

”Within minutes, he stood at the base of the stairs, wielding a tree branch lopper, a garden rake, and a can of WD40. ‘You need help with your hair?’ “ < -- Oh, how I love Gabe!!!

“This. This is the kind of man I could let into my life. Flawed, but grateful for his restoration. … Rooted in God. …”

I'm a sucker for a sweet, feel-good Christmas story. Cynthia Ruchti's Restoring Christmas is every bit of that . . . but so much more. In fact, it is one of the most touching stories I've read in a long time.

Cynthia has such a gentle way with words, and she definitely worked her magic in this one. Alexis, Gabe, and Elsie -- as well as the other characters who show up -- are all very intriguing, both as individuals and as the unexpected, mismatched company they become. Cynthia packs so much into this short book, using her limited pages to fill in the back stories of her characters, stories so important in understanding their perspectives on Christmas and the all-important, heart-deep restoration needed by each one.

The book has laugh-out-loud moments and times when you will likely wipe away some tears. As the story reaches its resolution, there are beautiful elements which especially pull at the heartstrings. The only bad thing in the book was that I wasn't ready to see the end.

Restoring Christmas is a must read to help get your mind and heart ready for Christmas and beyond. Thanks to Cynthia for sharing a copy of her story. I am excited to share my thoughts with other readers.
