This ambitious book, which incorporates recipes from all over the Southern region of the USA's Junior League, is more of a general cookbook with a Southern flair than a specifically Southern cookbook. While a few recipes have names like Easy Turkey Tetrazzini, most, like Shreveport Roast Wild Duck, "Dirty" Rice, or Sally Lunn rolls, are aimed at the home cook of moderate or greater experience. We recognized the Summer Squash Casserole (containing sour cream) as a favorite in many Southern homes, and we intend to make the gumbo that incorporates both seafood and chicken.
There is a copious chapter devoted to appetizers. We were disappointed to find that the one-and-only pecan pie recipe depends on white corn syrup and not Karo dark or molasses, but there are recipes for a nice Buttermilk Pecan Pie and that Southern staple, Chess Pie (which, like all good recipes of its kind, needs some cornmeal). Do not expect to find any recipes for Shrimp'n'Grits; at the time this book was published, it had not yet escaped the Coastal region of Georgia and South Carolina.
Among used copies, the Ballantine paperback version is cheaper and easier to find, the spiral-bound probably more practical for kitchen use.
A collection of recipes from various southern Junior League chapters. The recipes are straight forward and easy to follow. There are even some recipes for beverages.
