A little witch named Wanda winds up at a school for fairies in this amusing "first day of school" story from English author/artist Mark Sperring, whose other picture-book outings include such titles as The Fairytale Cake and Mermaid Dreams . With her lunch of octopus sandwich and "lizard's breath lemonade" safely tucked away, Wanda finds her way to Miss Dewdrop's School, where her fellow pupils, from Tulip Fluffyglow to Willow Peachbreath, are just a little bit different from her, and the pink decor made her feel oddly out of place. When she spies a woggle of witchy pupils flying past her window, she realizes that she has come to the wrong school! Can she find her way to the right one, and more importantly, does she want to...?

Children who enjoy magical stories without much bite to them will appreciate this sweet story, which, though its resolution is something of a foregone conclusion, will still prove very entertaining. The illustrations by Kate and Liz Pope are full of fun, with Wanda sticking out like a sore thumb, amidst her pastel-clad peers. Recommended to young readers who like witchy tales, and to anyone looking for reassuring "first day of school" stories.

I did like this book because I think it teaches a great lesson, but it is not a five star book in my opinion, because the ending was very abrupt. It was not an ending I was expecting at all. Although I believe kids would love this book, I think they would feel a little lost due to the odd ending of the story.

Wonderful and fun illustrations. Story was alright. I expected Wanda to switch schools, but I liked the questions the teacher asked her and how Wanda enjoyed her first day and the friends she made.

Wanda does not always feel like she belongs. A feeling we all can relate to. She doesn't look the same as everyone else, she dresses differently, and she is not always able to excel in all the school assignments. Yet, everyone keeps telling her that she is special and that she belongs. Lovely story about acceptance and individuality.

I think that this book is great for a beginning of the year theme. Wanda- a witch is supposed to be going to her first day of witch school but when she gets there she notices that everyone is different than her and that there had been a mistake- she was accidentely sent to fairy school- it would be great for the beginning of the year because students nervous or anxious about differences and not finding fiends will be be relieved because despite her differences from the fairies she finds great friends at fairy school.

Wanda's First Day is a great book for early elementary students, or early childhood students. Teachers could read this book to the class at the very beginning of the year, such as the first week of school. A lot of kids are nervous starting a new routine, going to school for the first time, and making new friends. This book relates the way students are feeling to the fantasy story of Wanda the witch.

This is a fabulous book about Wanda the witch going to her first day of witch school. She is in for a surprise when she gets there. Nobody looks like her! What will she do? In the end Wanda feels good about who she is and the school that she is going to. This is a very fun book to read aloud (possibly in the first weeks of school).

wanda is a witch that does not fit in on her first day of school. all of the other girls at her school are fairies. she ended up making a lot of new friends and having a great first day of school. this book is directed more towards girls as well. it has no boys in it at all. it would be a good halloween type of book because it is about witches and fairies but does not mention halloween at all.
