Leonora has managed to save her pregnant sister from a vampire attack, but to insure the safety of her sister and niece, Leo is willing to pay with everything but her life. Covered in her own blood, she approaches the Mayor of Redbird City—who happens to be the local vampire king—and makes a deal. She will serve him as his assistant if he will keep her sister and niece from being torn apart. Matthias agrees willingly to take on a new assistant and sends his men out to keep her sister safe. It is the beginning of a partnership that will make her his apprentice, send her to negotiate for dragons, visit crime scenes and keep her doing his bidding while her sister’s attackers rally and prepare to try again. Leo picks up her baseball bat and gets ready for the fight of her life.
This is the fifth book in this series with the first three following a heroine and her three gentlemen but you don't have to have read the first books to enjoy this book.
The heroine is wonderfully loyal and capable. Maybe too much so as she lacks complexity but I like her a lot.
The hero is reserved and steadfast.
There is a fun cast of all kinds of paranormal beings and the action plot along with the world building is good.
So, this book takes place about the same time as the first Benny book. And Benny and the guys shows up as a background character later in the story. The heroine is committed to doing what she believes is right, doesn't feel sorry for herself, and takes action without reservation when someone she loves is at risk. While the early violence was a surprise, the tone was mostly light and there were some fun scenes. I enjoyed seeing Leo (another guy name) make her place with the Mayor, and in the supernatural society. She's definitely a force to be reckoned with.
I loved this story. Leo is sassy and fun to read about. I love how family was more important than things. The interactions between her and the other characters was entertaining. The storyline was captivating and enthralling.
I can't believe that I read the story in two days.. I really liked it AND finished soo fast. I believe ALL ages would enjoy the fast pace of the story. I DID .But I hope I get to read about Lenora , Matisse again..TOTALLY LOVED IT..
