Accidental Groupie

Rate this book
Ivy Thompson. Rock goddess. Notorious for leaving a string of broken hearts behind her tour bus.

Jessica always looked down on those brokenhearted girls. Silly groupies who loved a terrible band. She'd never do something crazy like that.

Until she did.

It was all a big accident. Jessica was dragged to their concert against her will. She had no idea the sexy girl she met before the concert was Ivy, and by the time she realized who Ivy really was it was too late.

She was in too deep.

Gorgeous. Smart. Sexy. Yeah, Ivy Thompson was the last thing Jessica needed in her life until she was the only thing she needed in her life. But can the reformed rock star and the accidental groupie, women from two very different worlds, get over those differences long enough to find true love?

I hated every moment of this book. The writing was either cheesy, repetitive, self-contradictory, or straight-up poor (including grammar). I predicted every major plot point. I felt genuinely relieved when I finally hit the halfway mark.

The book gradually got less painful and intolerable, either because the characters eventually started to have other thoughts beyond how "so fucking turned on" they were or because my brain learned how to deal with it. I honestly can't tell.

I truly cannot recommend this book. You may enjoy it if all you want is an extremely trashy romance novel, but if you're looking for any quality or substance, look elsewhere.

UPDATE 3/28: Alright, now that I've cooled off a bit, I figured maybe I should provide some more concrete examples of what I'm talking about when I say the writing just isn't good. Here are some excerpts from chapter 11 of 33 (narrated by Girl-Next-Door MC). Note that these are fully-clothed-yet-NSFW and could be considered spoilers:

She did one better than pressing against me though. Her other arm wrapped around me and then her entire body was pressing against me. I froze, unsure of what to do. Unsure that this was actually happening. Sure there was the whole pop star thing she had going for her and that was nice and all, but more than anything I was just a woman with a hot girl pressing against her, not quite believing my luck.

Only her breasts, her tight stomach, pressed against me were all too real.

I felt a fire raging in my pussy from our bodies connecting. She started not-so-subtly grinding against me. And why should she bother to be subtle? This was Ivy Thompson, we were backstage at a concert she'd just rocked judging by the women still screaming out there. She could have her pick of any girl out there and yet she was grinding against me.

Cue about 4 more pages of internal monologue which I'll summarize: "She's a rock star and I'm just a nobody, she's probably seduced tons of girls just like me, maybe she's just playing me, but SHE'S SO HOT I DON'T CARE"

And then Ivy starts to walk away and says:

"Are you coming?"

Oh hell those words could mean so many different things. And right now I knew exactly what it meant. My body was shivering and I felt an impossible pleasure between my legs. Holy shit. I really was in very real danger of coming just standing here thinking about what she'd just said!

Those are copy/pasted from my ebook and have not been altered at all.

There are multiple cliches, multiple cases of phrases repeated within the same page...

"What can I say? I heard that burger place is supposed to be one of the best in the country!"

Jessica reached out and playfully nudged me. A playful nudge that thrilled me. What can I say? Just about every touch from her thrilled me!

...and in general, the book suffers from the classic "tells without showing" hangup -- for all the many, many times where I'm told this girl is hot, there sure isn't an awful lot of physical description allowing me to visualize her (and make that assessment for myself). What sensory descriptions are given are cheesy as hell (perfect example: "I felt a fire raging in my pussy," quoted above).

I hope Mia Archer continues writing books. The world needs more lesbian fiction, but it's a sadly barren genre. I hope that while she writes, she learns and grows and further hones her skills. I saw some potential in this story, especially in its concept, and I can't wait to see what Archer can do when she combines her ideas with fully-polished writing.

4.5 stars.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have to admit to really enjoying Archer's style of writing. Anyone who has read and enjoyed any previous books of hers will readily enjoy this one as well. She has made an artform out of the initial stages of a relationship - that falling in love stage. It's exciting to read about the initial attraction, nervousness, and shy vulnerability inherent in the beginning of a relationship. The premise of this story is extremely amusing. A rock star, used to wowing any woman she talks to, decides to give a fan the thrill of a lifetime. Meanwhile, that "fan" dislikes the band, and the music, and is only going to the concert because her best friend blackmailed her into it. Instead of a thrilled scream and astonished face, Ivy gets a blank look because Jessica doesn't recognize her at all. The two seem to hit it off though, each thinking the other is pretty hot. What follows is a dream come true for any fan - Jessica gets pulled up on stage and sung to, backstage passes are slid into her back pocket, she gets to hang at the after-party, and gets taken back to Ivy's tour bus for a hot one-night stand. A typical groupie experience, she thinks. But Ivy has changed from the person she was during the band's heyday, and there's nothing typical about her response to Jessica. There's a big misunderstanding at the end of their initial time together, and Jessica decides that the relationship was all a lie and she's better off leaving Ivy to her fans.
This is where I get a bit lost as far as the storyline goes. A lot of Jessica's response is based on her own insecurities. I don't blame her; it would definitely be difficult for anyone not humongously arrogant and conceited not to have a bit of trepidation when entering into a relationship with someone famous. After all, she's famous and can have anybody she wants, so why would she want me? Jessica thinks this many times, and even asks Ivy that question. Ivy on the other hand, makes such a dumb mistake with her friend Gareth that it borders on self-destructive, which sounds like par for the course to be honest. In the end, there's a grand gesture from Ivy to apologize and get her girl back, which was pretty awesome. But I also thought Jessica needed to apologize a bit for her actions.
All in all, another exciting, fast-paced love story that kept me involved and cheering for the two lovers. Can't wait for the next book!

In return for an honest review...

Ok, I really enjoy Mia's writing style. The story is fun and pretty easy to get through in a single reading. I have enjoyed all of Ms. Archer's books to date, even since the move away from more elicit scenes of intimacy, but the hesitancy in the characters tended to be a bit more repetitive and more than once I was tempted to skip some of the internal debate and get to the point.

On a positive note, the build up between the characters is palpable, and I found I was getting excited right along with the pair. The downside is that right when they get to a point right before they get to anything close to foreplay, the next paragraph takes you to the post-intimate scene and you're left with something akin to a Gatorade shower without much to celebrate. You got all heated up and end up ice-bucketed.

In the end though, I don't really have much in the way of outstandingly negative or positive remarks. This one was kinda middle of the road for me in terms of other books by the same author.

DNF at 63% when the obvious happened.
I enjoyed the first part of the book, but then it just got ridiculous. Too much repetition from both characters' PoV. Jessica summed up: "I don't want to want her, but she's so hot" - at some point "but she's so hot" really doesn't fly with me. I need more substance. Also, who swoons? I really wasn't feeling Jessica.
Internally, Ivy is actually quite sweet. However, the way she speaks is tacky and pretty sleazy. Perhaps this is resolved further in the book; Ivy was certainly the reason I read as far as I did.
Too many exclamation marks made me feel like I could hear a hyper-active teen narrating.
It's a shame, because the premise is fun.
I won't rate this as it's not fair to give a low rating when I didn't finish.

Nice story about falling in love with the person

As a fan of Miami Archer I had to read Accidental Groupie and I really liked it. It's a story about the has been rocker Ivy and non-fan Jessica. The meeting of the two characters was really good and funny and their whirlwind romance was filled with misunderstanding and hesitation. I wish there was a little more interaction with Ivy's group members and less inner dialogue but overall it was an easy, well written romance that fans of Archer should definitely read

Cute story of how Jessica, who absolutely hated the pop group Sleepwalker, met and fell in love with Ivy, the group's lead singer. It's predictable, yes, but still quite charming. It's written from both Jessica and Ivy's perspective, so it can be confusing. The whole story takes place over a couple of days. Can 2 people really fall in love that quickly? Or, is it just a major case of lust, since both characters are repeatedly described as incredibly hot. But hey, it's fiction. The title is quite accurate, it's a sweet lesbian romance.

Another great hit!

Loved the story line of this book. It's always a great read when the main character is a little naive on what's going on around her. Can't wait for the next story.

This book not only kept my interest, I even thought about getting back to it when I wasn't reading it! I actually missed the characters and story and wanted to get back to it!

Loved the story

However there were a lot of errors and typos. An editor seemed to be needed. Additionally , the shifting POV was confusing. I kept getting lost on who was talking.

Awesome & adorable romance

Seriously, how incredible is a book that has a simplistically poetic yet still with such titillating complexities as a line like that—how could this book be anything but incredible!!!

An emotional & entertaining story with characters that become so authentic they truly become like real people in your mind & a riveting plot lines that draws you in so effortlessly & subtly without you even noticing.

A love story that didn't even need an explicit sex scene to feel the passion & heat between Jessica & Ivy—not to say I wasn't looking or hoping for it, but it wasn’t necessary (& on a literary basis, all good without it). Instead, the story relied on words, actions & responses not physical acts to express their intensity, passion & emotions for each other.

Interesting!

This well written book has well developed characters and an interesting storyline. Ivy is the lead singer in an internationally recognized band. Jessica never really was a very big fan of Sleepwalker, Ivy's band, but finds herself being dragged to a concert when her best friend wins exclusive tickets to their local concert venue. The rest, as they say, is history, albeit with plenty of hiccups along the way. This is a good book for your must read list.

Sweet & fun

Ivy is used to girls falling at her feet since she's the lead singer of a famous band. She bumps onto Jessica who got dragged to the concert of a band she's never paid attention to, so of course she has no idea who Ivy is. Eventually she figures it out & fear of being just another groupie to Ivy has Jessica running in the opposite direction. Of course love conquers all. Author breathes some new life into a well known storyline making it a fun read.

I loved the back-and-forth bickering and flirting between Jessica and Ivy, that was cute, but I felt that at some points in the story it was going to end and then it didn't end and then when it finally did come to the end it felt weird that they just made up because nobody can just make up after one finds out (not even from that person) that their love interest was not being completely truthful with them and didn't just explain to her what happened in the past.

I like Mia Archer's books but this was not one of her best, I was going to give less than 4 stars but the book was redeemed by the awesome final two or three chapters - do not DNF this book, the ending makes it worthwhile (and don't skip to the ending either, you need the backstory).

It's like a incomplete story. Once done with prolonged self oriented thoughts of both characters (Jessica and Ivy), all of a certain a skip button clicked from the most awaiting part.

- *2.5 stars* This book manages to have the same vibe as a fic for One Direction but make it GL and y/n have an actual personality (Does this make it better? Kinda, but not by a lot)
