My original Suicide Lake audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer. Renee has lost all hope, and considering all the things life had thrown at her, it was very easy to sympathize with her. But just when she decides to end it all at the local spot known as ‘Suicide Lake’, she discovers a woman’s body in the water, and soon Renee becomes deeply engrossed in a maze of betrayal and deceit. As a romance begins to blossom between Renee and deputy sheriff Cliff, Renee slowly starts to believe that perhaps there could be a more promising future ahead for her. But in a corrupt town full of secrets, Renee’s life is threatened once more, and she has to face up to her own problematic past. Suicide Lake was a suspenseful and very entertaining small town mystery with lots of unexpected twists and witty sarcasm. Although a relatively short story, the characters were fully fleshed out, and in particular, the protagonist, Renee, was characterized superbly. You couldn’t help but feel everything she was feeling. Ms. Fontainne managed to trick me once more as I was trusting the wrong character. I just love how you can never predict what it is going to happen in Ashley Fontainne’s stories. She gets me every time. Sara Morsey was a perfect fit for the narration of this audiobook. She embodied the character of Renee just right and kept all the other characters distinct with a range of different, suitable voices. She is just great at getting across the entire Southern flair, which makes the setting and the characters seem so real. There were no issues with the production. I would highly recommend Suicide Lake if you enjoy thrilling mysteries with a hint of romance and an intriguing small town setting where nothing is as it seems. Ashley Fontainne is a MUST READ bestselling author, to me, so…when Suicide Lake came up for grabs, I was all over it! I like a little romance with my murder, so Suicide Lake held all the must haves for me. Another hit not to be missed for all mystery/thriller readers.
Poor Renee.
Such a dark and dismal life. She has finally given up. As I read about her, I thought I might even be tempted to walk out on that beautiful dock, check out the heavily polluted water, think about all the suicides that have happened before…and dived in myself.
Ironic that a dead body would save her.
The small town must have a “dick” for a sheriff. Isn’t that mandatory? LOL
I get angry for her. It’s not like she doesn’t try. No education, bad situations and bad choices can take control of our lives, don’t you think? I am very suspicious when she is offered a job at the mayor’s office.
Ashley Fontainne has a way of stringing me along, letting me become complacent, thinking all is good…then BAM…she kicks my teeth in… my heart beats faster and fear and suspense build to an almost unmanageable level. Her endings are the cherry on top of the sundae.
My only complaint…I am so spoiled by her novels that start with action at a fever pitch and go from beginning to end, fell a little flat in Suicide Lake. The first half of the novel seemed a bit slow and not up to her usual standards. Could this be me? Could it be my mood at the time of reading? Does that ever happen to you?
Doesn’t matter, Ashley Fontainne and Suicide Lake rocked and I expected no less.
I received a copy of Suicide Lake from Ashley Fontainne in return for an honest review.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
2019 52 Book Challenge - 28) A Book That Discusses Mental Health
This book is so slow. The plot feels like it is in the background and is added to occassionally rather than being the driving force of the novel. Honestly, I just found it really boring.
Ashley Fontainne does it again! This book was such a rollercoaster and had so many twists and turns that you will get whiplash reading it ;)
Renee's life has been hell! At 13 her father left, never to be heard from again, her mother proceeded to become a drunk, Renee eventually married and divorced a man who made her life miserable, and who ended up in jail for murdering his second wife, she also lost a baby, which her husband blamed her for. She was penniless and had to move in with her mother in law! At her lowest, she takes some of her mother in laws pills with the intention of going to "Suicide" Lake. A once beautiful spot, now marred with waste dumping and being the spot where people come to end it all. Once there, she is just about to swallow her pills and enter the lake when she stumbles across a body. Unbeknownst to her, this will change her life forever!
Plot wise, this was such a suspenseful and gripping read that I listened to it in a day. This author never fails to grab your attention right from the start and doesn't let go till the very end! With plenty of twists, turns, and even a little romance, this is a must read for all!
For such a shortish book, the characters all go through so much but they also grow more for it. They are all well written and executed and there wasn't one that I didn't like.
In all, a brilliant and thrilling read and one I can't recommend enough. This author never fails to deliver with her books and I urge people to try them.
This isn't my first listen by Sara Morsey and won't be my last. She has such a comfortable voice that she immediately puts you at ease and in the mood for a good book. Her tones are varied and her accents were amazing. She really brought this book to life!
I always know I’m going to get a wild read with Ashley’s books. Her plots are so twisted. You follow false lead after false lead. And, just like with peeling an onion, when you think you’ve got it all figured out, you find another mystery, and peel back another layer.
Renee has had a crappy life. Seeing no bright future ahead, she goes to Bradford Lake to end it all. It used to be a place to take the family. Now it’s polluted, and many have ended their lives in it’s waters. The locals call it Suicide lake.
But Renee’s attempt is abruptly stopped when she discovers a body. Horrified, all thoughts turn to getting out of there. As she turns to go, she bumps into none other than an old beau, Deputy Cliff Simpson. This chance meeting changes everything as the two are now thrust into the middle of a murder investigation.
All of this takes place in the first chapter. And each page pulls you deeper into the mystery. I swear, I barely got over one thing before something else happened. The words flew by and I couldn’t believe some of the secrets that were revealed.
Saying this book is full of twists and turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat is just some of how it makes you feel. The plot is like a runaway train.
And when I did finally get my answers, I wondered how I missed the clues. So not what I expected.
This is a perfect fix for all of you mystery/thriller fans.

This is a dark mystery/ thriller. Journey along to find out "who done it." There are plenty of twists and turns that keep you guessing. Who will prevail? Listen on to find out.
The narration was well done. The characters were excellently portrayed.
What started as a woman, Renee, trying to end her pain and suffering turned into a ride on the bumper cars. Each time you thought something was finally staring to go her way, boom, something else who bump into her.
The story of Renee Thornton is heartbreaking. She’s an abuse survivor who has nothing. She been kicked out of her home, so she’s staying with her ex-husbands mother. She loses her job... she is at the end of her rope and decides tonight she’s just going to end it all.
Bradford lake, better known as, suicide lake, is the best place to do it. No one would find her for days, or at all. So many of her demons surround this place, it was fitting. It’s all too much to take. Just when she is about to make that final plunge... a dead body brushes her feet. Talk about a reality check.
That body turns the sleepy little town upside down and unravels a trail of lies and deception. A trail that Renee finds herself right in the middle of. Just when you think it’s over and all is well... an arse from the past shows up and it once again becomes a fight for life at Suicide Lake.
Question is.... is Renee strong enough to fight her demons, or will she just give up.
**The narrator for me was not a good fit for this book. She made it a struggle at times to listen and stay I grossed in the story. The story itself was a good one just a little slow in the beginning. But that a side like I said, it was a good story**
As a fan of mysteries and thrillers, Fontaine did not disappoint. This story is a great rainy afternoon listen. It is shorter than most offerings, but is jam packed with action and intrigue.
The heroine was well defined and grew from a mousy, unlikable character to a strong survivor. I found myself rooting for her in the end despite her own complicit acts. Her psychological metamorphosis unravels through the very end. Even with my experience with law enforcement, I did not suspect the twist surrounding the hero of the tale. The characterization in this tale reflects the reality of small town politics and has the listener wondering who the heroine should trust, if anyone - including herself.
With Suicide Lake, Fontaine offers a satisfying appetizer, encouraging listeners to find more of her offerings. I can hardly wait for my next course!
This was a really good book!I started it a time or two and finally it clicked.A woman decides to end it all in suicide lake.As she sits on the dock, she feels human remains under her.So who really killed the lady in the lake? She'd been missing for awhile. There are a lot of secrets under that water.Sara Morsey is a fine narrator for this book.I was provided this book by the author, narrator or publisher for review.
4.5 Stars! This is a great read. Fast. Seems simple until it's not. The main character is interesting and the supporting characters are well developed. The mysteries are well defined and multilayered within the story. I admittedly was shocked by a turn of events that I never imagined. I recommend this read.
Loved it! Excellent narration!!! I've already selected my next book narrated by Sara Morsey, loved her reading, she was the perfect selection for Ashley Fontainne's thrilling story, horrified & lol'ing at the same time WOW!
This was my first Ashley Fontainne book and loved it! Mystery, suspense and romance - this is sure to please. Sara Morsey was a terrific narrator and I look forward to listening to more of Ms. Fontainne's audiobooks. Two enthusiastic thumbs up and I would definitely recommend this.

( Format : Audiobook ). "Some things are meant to stay secret..." Renée's life has not been an easy one. The only daughter, her father, Raymond (I'm too redneck to have a middle name) Thornton left when she was 13, her mother was an alcoholic, the man she married beat her regularly only to later serve time for murdering his second wife, and her child died when still a baby. After years of mental problems, broke, jobless, hopeless and in constant pain, she can no longer face life and goes to the nearbye lake to end it. Instead, she finds the body of a woman.
Told from Renee's point of view, the town's guilty secrets are slowly revealed. The book is greatly enhanced by the superb reading of Sara Morsey, who, with a slow and beautifully accented voice tells, almost unemotionally, of event past and present. She really is Renee, with all of her self pity, resentments, hopes and ongoing fears. And the beginnings of love. It is the narration which makes this a powerfully engrossing book, well worth hearing: I am not sure that the written word would have gripped my attention in the same way.
I am new to the writings of Ashley Fontaine. I enjoyed the construction of this story, the rambling reminiscences of an unstable woman. Even the rare inconsistencies in the text could be ascribed, not to the auhor but to the character, herself. Would I read another of Fontaine's books? Most certainly if read by the same narrator. As a written text? Probably not.
My thanks to the rights holder for the gift of my copy of Suicide Lake, sent via Audiobook Boom. It was refreshingly different, a story I will revisit in my head for some time into the future.
I listened to this book on Audible. I am a huge mystery fan so jumped at the chance to read a new author (to me) and the blurb sounded just beyond creepy! Although I found the book good, it wasn't as creepy as I was hoping for. There was more romance than I usually read, though this is a minor part of the book still. Renee is a wounded character, after being bashed by her ex husband and life in general. She finds herself given the gift of a second chance when she comes across the body of the leading citizens of her little town, while in the midst of trying to end her own life! The mystery is a good one and kept me reading. I will say, I think I would have liked this book better if I had read it. The narrator's voice had that little quiver to it, along with the southern drawl, and I couldn't get the picture of an elderly Renee out of my head, when actually Renee is not yet 50 years old. Overall this is a good read/listen that kept me going to the very end.

SUICIDE LAKE By Ashley Fontainne 5 stars The wet grave of hell!
Bradford Lake used to be a popular spot for people to visit with their children, yet now, its reputation was tainted, and no one came to enjoy the secluded place. The lake had been the dumping ground for chemicals and waste products from local sawmills and farms. Access to the lake was closed in 1970 as the water was foul and full of all sorts of bacteria and garbage. People got sick swimming in it. Multiple suicides occurred throughout the years committed by people jumping off the edge of the dock, which changed everyone’s perception of the area. Locals nicknamed the place “Suicide Lake” and believed it to be haunted because of the jumpers, who were all women. They all had abusive husbands or boyfriends. Most of the residents of Whitten County feared the mountain lake was haunted from all the lonely souls who ended their time on earth with one Eleanor was the friend of Renee Michelle Thorton and mother of the young man Renee married. Eleanor’s son inflicted horrors on Renee and eventually he was sent to prison for killing his second wife. He got fifteen years, having beaten the poor woman to death with his bare hands. At age thirteen, Renee’s father disappeared from her life and her mother became a roaring drunk. Renee’s mother told her when she was drunk that she killed Cyndi and Renee’s father at Bradford Lake with a tire iron and then pushed them and the motorcycle into the lake. Eventually, Renee then married Eleanor’s son, and had a baby, which died, She couldn’t earn a decent living because of no education and after her mother died, she had to rely on Eleanor and moved in with her while the son was still in prison. She finally became so depressed she stole Eleanor’s Xanax, although she only took three pills while looking at Bradford lake, trying to decide when she was going to jump in. She was sitting on the edge of the lake when something bumped her foot, bright red and bloody. Clifton Simpson, an ex boyfriend and now a local cop, found her about the same time. The drowned woman was Martha Cayhill, the wife of the Mayor Peyton Cayhill . Martha had been missing sixteen months. Renee had osteoporosis in her back and couldn’t afford to get the surgery. The mayor had posted a reward of $10,000 for anyone finding his wife, so Renee got the reward and could get the surgery. The story is full of twists and turns. There is something mysterious about Mayor Cayhill’s actions, Martha’s past, and the mystery keeps building until the very end when Renee reveals something that the reader would never suspect. It startled me and I enjoyed every minutes while reading this book. I got a complimentary copy of the e-book for an honest review.
My rating system: ***** This book is being added to my "favorite reads" list, and I will recommend it to everyone **** This book is better than average in at least one area, and I highly recommend it *** This is a perfectly adequate book that I enjoyed, and recommend it ** This book did not meet my expectations in at least two or more areas, and I only would recommend with hesitation * This book did not appeal to me at all, and I would not recommend it
Just as Renee Thornton attempts to take her own life by jumping into Bradford Lake, known locally as the infamous "Suicide Lake", she discovers a body of a woman under the surface of the water. Will Renee be able to overcome her own personal demons as she struggles to survive in a town full of lies, deceit and mystery?
I enjoyed this audiobook because of the many twists and unexpected turns the plot takes, just as one conflict seems to be resolved, something unexpected happens that makes the reader reevaluate what will happen next. I would consider this a good choice for anyone who enjoys a short suspense thriller.
The story would have been better for me if the conflict with the mayor had not seemed so rushed in the beginning. It felt as though no rational background or reasoning was given for Renee's immediate trepidation and skepticism of him. As the story unfolds, it is discovered these fears were indeed rational, but there was not enough foreshadowing to justify her initial response toward him.
Potentially Offensive Content:
Sex - consensual intercourse between two unmarried people, threats of sexual violence, sexual activity involving a man with two women
Violence - domestic violence against women, multiple murders, suicide, woman is beaten by two men
Language - I did not keep a tally, but the there were many swear words and other potentially offensive language sprinkled throughout the entire book. The "F" word is used multiple times.
I especially enjoyed all of the twists and turns this plot takes, the story keeps the reader guessing until the very end. I also felt the book was very strong in the area of character development and growth regarding Renee, especially. At the end of the book, she is most definitely not the hopeless, suicidal, desperate woman she is at the beginning.
Sara Morley did a fantastic job narrating this audiobook. Her voice perfectly captured the age and tone I would have imagined Renee to possess.

Only Ashley Fontainne has the ability to make you laugh and cry, jump for joy and scream in terror, and love and hate all at the same time. She's one of the very few who can make you love the bad guys, hate the good guys and obscure all the boundaries between good and evil so that even the gray areas are different shades.
No matter what happens, no matter what they do or have done to them, there's not been one main character that Ashley has created that I didn't empathize with and come to love. "Suicide Lake" is no different. In this thrilling and suspenseful novel, you'll never see the twists and turns coming. Once again, this author has done an outstanding job.
We first meet Renee Thornton, the protagonist of Ashley Fontainne's newest thriller, "Suicide Lake," just as she's about to commit suicide. From this dubious opening, we are immediately thrust into another crazy, creepy, suspense-filled story that reveals new, and more surprising secrets, on just about every page. I almost couldn't turn the pages quickly enough as I tried to figure out what secrets everyone in town was hiding. As Renee tries to figure out the mystery of the body in Suicide Lake, she's also subjected to more and more revealing secrets hidden in her own past. Once again, Ashley Fontainne has penned a unique and mesmerizing thriller that will suck you into one of her compelling and totally original worlds, one that will leave you dazed and amazed.
Wow. Just wow. This book blew me away. It didn't take long for the book to hook me and I listened to it in one sitting. The narration was very well done. Sara Morsey does a very good job of creating multiple distinct character voices. Ashley Fontainne's writing (as with the previous books of hers I've read) was fantastic. The story is intricate and keeps you guessing. I was constantly on edge to figure out what happened next. There's even a little romance thrown into the chaos that has become Renee's life after finding a body in Bradford Lake as she was contemplating suicide. The entire situation is a mystery, and as the book progresses, Fontainne adds layers until we discover the mystery is actually a LOT bigger than what the characters (and the reader) thought at the beginning. The book really sucked me in to the point that it was evoking emotions in me throughout the book (a sign of great writing, in my opinion). There were times I could feel a hint of what the character must be feeling (such as terror). Some parts made me smile while others were darker and filled me with apprehension. Overall, this is an excellent book.
Actual rating 4.5 stars! Renee has had a rough life. Things just keep getting worse for her, and she is ready to end her life. However, she can't even accomplish that, as she is interrupted by a dead body floating up by her. As a reader, you can't help but feel the hopelessness that she has felt. I'm very impressed with this author, and her storytelling ability. The mystery was exciting, and I couldn't wait to find out what was really going on. There were several great twists included as well. The narrator of the audiobook was Sara Morsey, and she did a great job. Her voice was a little older sounding, and it fit really well with the main character. I really enjoyed this audiobook, and I am very interested in reading more of the author's work. **This book was provided in exchange for an honest review
Where does Suicide Lake rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far? I liked this book because the author actually put you into the minds the way real people think and talk.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Suicide Lake? When the main character went to the lake to take her life and she encounters a dead body. All hell breaks loose after that.
Which character – as performed by Sara Morsey – was your favorite? I liked the way she did Billy. Hard to do a man if you are a woman. LoL
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be? The Lake is not always what it seems.
This book had a decent storyline, but I really had a hard time connecting with it and the characters. My attention waned in parts, but I was engrossed in other parts. I listened to the Audible audio version of this book narrated by Sara Morsey, and I thought she did a good job with the narration. This book has action, mystery, and romance, but I didn't really enjoy the romance between Renee and Cliff - though Cliff was really sweet and romantic in the end, I had a hard time with how his and Renee's relationship got to that point (but I think I'm in the minority on that). Despite my complaints, I still enjoyed the book, but I probably wouldn't listen to it again.
All of the crazy plot twists and revenge driven antagonists I've come to expect from Fontainne! I literally had no idea what the outcome was going to be, until the very last minute! Morsey was the perfect choice for the narration. With her sweet southern charm meshes perfectly with the story. Loved it! I received a promotional copy in exchange for an honest review.
