Another masterpiece written by Carrie, taking place during my favorite historical period to read, the Civil War/ I loved the rich historical detail in the book. What a beautiful story of overcoming. I truly felt as though I was at Shirley Plantation observing all that took place. A smoothly flowing story. I do wish it had been a full length book though. I recommend to all.

Carrie Fancett Pagels has written a wonderful historical romance set during the Civil War. This story takes place at Shirley Plantation in Charles City, Virginia. I have heard great things about Shirley Plantation and reading this novella was like I was finally arriving there and getting to see it with my own eyes.
I think the author nicely described the layout of the plantation—clearly she must have been there, and while walking the grounds of Shirley Plantation she must have fantasized about the stories that could have taken place there.

I loved reading about Angelina and Matthew—how they met at Shirley Plantation and how the first sparks of chemistry filled the air. But this is not only a love story—it is war and there are secrets and a mystery to unravel.

This novella was a great historical read that gave me a glimpse into the world from long ago. I’d like to applaud the author with this beautifully written story with endearing characters, rich historical detail, and a good Christian message. Well done, Carrie!

I'm generally not a novella reader, but I'm glad I made an exception in this case.

Lately I've been interested in Civil War historical fiction. We're visiting historical sites in the east this summer, and what better way to take in history, but by enjoying it within a fiction book?

I didn't believe I could get much out of a novella since they tend to cram a larger story into a smaller one with big chunks having to be left out for the sake of brevity. However, I can't say that for this gem. Return to Shirley Plantation packs a lot in a "small" book, nicely leaving out all nonessential page fillers that most people want to bypass anyway.

Others have described the book's plot, so I don't need to be repetitive. My review comes from a mechanical stand point. Ms. Pagels makes the most of the amount of space she can, as she weaves a story within an amazing amount of history. She develops her characters in such a way that the reader gets a full sense (rather than an abbreviated one) of who they were and why the reader does or does not like them. This book (the first, I believe, in this collection of historical novellas on the Civil War) was fascinating and thought provoking.

Uppermost in my joy while reading this book was that Ms. Pagels respects the readers intelligence by not explaining every different term, yet she allows the reader discovery on their own (sign of a good teacher, by the way). For example, I didn't know what a Copperhead was (and I don't mean a snake), and I had a great time "Googling" it. This further caused me to look up a number of words and topics relating to the plot to get a broader understanding and enjoy the book even more.

I love when an author gives the reader a sense of the setting of a story, not just in describing what it looks like, but also bringing in real historical people and real landmarks that still exist today.

The week of Hurricane Ian.

We headed north for a mini vacation in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. Since we were this far north and this close to such ripe history we went a tad further to visit the Shirley Plantation, a bit south of Richmond. It saddened me that this book was put away in a drawer in the gift shop because it was fiction rather than completely factual. Um, hello, it’s fiction. The main characters are fictitious, but the history surrounding the estate was well done.

What I didn’t realize is even today the home is still occupied by descendants of the Carter family who’ve owned and passed it down for generations and generations. The couple and their young twin children occupy the upper story. What a grand place; original beautiful unique staircase (not allowed to take pictures of interior🙁), brickwork and floors installed in the early 1700s! All original!

What I also didn’t realize was there's not one or two plantations over this region, but many! From Richmond all the way to Williamsburg it seemed as though there was a plantation every few miles. So we visited another plantation called Berkeley. Also fascinating, but the history was greatly from 1619 through the Revolutionary War. Several presidents (Harrisons) lived in this estate and welcomed other presidents for visits and balls. Also worth a visit.

I recommend these tours and of course this book.

Oh, another edit. As we were leaving the tour I remarked about the key she used to get in. It was the old skeleton type. I told her I had never seen anybody actually use that kind of key before. And then I remembered the cover of this book. It is the actual view through that very keyhole!!! I looked!

A CIVIL WAR LOVE STORY

A love story and the Civil War—two of my favorite things in novels! Add truly rich historical research, a wonderful plot twist, and the clean and crisp pen of Carrie Fancett Pagels, and you have a tender tale of love amidst the clash of the blue and the gray.

I was stunned that in the few pages of a novella, I found myself swept away into the fascinating background of the Shirley Plantation, the oldest plantation in Virginia, where the author paints a lush canvas of love and heartbreak among the ruins of war.

Volume 1 in Murray Pura’s American Civil War Series, The Cry of Freedom, Miss Fancett Pagel’s Return to Shirley Plantation: A Civil War Romance, is the perfect beginning to whet your appetite for what is sure to be a truly outstanding series.

It is 1862 and the Civil war is raging. The Carter family and others at Shirley Plantation in Virginia are already fearful knowing the armies are moving in their direction. It is a time of great unrest and angst with reports reaching them of numerous fierce battles and a voluminous number of deaths. The troubling knowledge that loved ones are fighting in this brutal conflict and may never come home is an added cause of distress for this family.

Angelina Rose, a seamstress who was a former slave and is one-eighth African, is staying at the Old House on the plantation with her sister’s orphaned children who were not yet freed. When one day she hears the sound of marching men and looks out the window, she is chilled to see the expansive lawns covered with hundreds of Union soldiers pitching tents and laying bedrolls. The army had taken over Shirley Plantation as a field hospital and the sounds of unearthly moans and groans of rows and rows of injured soldiers filled her ears. What will all this mean to this beautiful young woman? Could she possibly get safe passage back with the Union soldiers for her and the children? And will she be safe in the meantime having to help take care of these soldiers?

Matthew Scott was the owner of the Theatrical Troupe in Ohio and was elated that his company had just been booked for the next three months, when he was effectively taken and conscripted by the Confederate army as he exited the building. He finds himself on the battlefield and experiencing what he could only describe as hell. He falls when wounded with the thundering noises of war reverberating around him as he passes out. Matthew is then found and taken by the Union army with other wounded to Shirley Plantation.

While Angelina tends to the needs and wounds of the soldier’s, Matthew and Angelina are drawn to one another. However, she is a woman with secrets and is masquerading as a widow in mourning and guarding closely the secret of her heritage. Will Matthew and the army be a means of freedom for her and the children? And will he understand when he discovers her deception?
Matthew, having been forced to fight for the Confederates, and with his father being a Copperhead, is still at risk along with Angelina. Can they ever find freedom and safety?

This is a fascinating and intricately woven story. It is hugely satisfying to see the pieces fit together with the mysteries and circumstances surrounding both Matthew and Angelina.

Return to Shirley Plantation is steeped in history and written with such authenticity, it truly is a step back in time to a place that is synonymous with much tragedy, but also one that represents many stories of faith, romance, hope and triumph in the face of the horrors of war. This story also conveys the pivotal message of listening to and obeying God.
As Carrie Fancett Pagels debut novel, this is a commanding and brilliant story! Well done Carrie!

As a historical novelist, Carrie Fancett Pagels has a voice you can trust. Woven into the story are rich historical details and cultural nuances that enriched the story and deepened the characters. I was delighted to find that this novella takes place during the ill-fated (for the North, anyway) Peninsula Campaign of 1862, and love the fact that the hero was part of a theatrical troupe! The novella's length makes it a pleasurable read that can be enjoyed in one or two days, yet still leaves the reader feeling satisfied at the end.

I'm a Civil War buff and have read many novels in this era. Return to Shirley Plantation has many twists and turns I've never read in a Civil War novel before. And definitely didn't see coming. This shows how creative Carrie's writing is. Making the story so refreshing to read and and I enjoyed it. I will be looking forward to more of this series and of Carrie's writing in the future. Highly recommended.

Matthew Scott is a theater owner conscripted into the Confederate army against his will. Angelina Rose is a former slave with skin as white as that of the mistress of Shirley Plantation. Both Matt and Angie seek God’s plan for their lives but find it difficult to discern in the turmoil of the Civil War. When their paths collide, will their patience and trust in God keep them safe from harm? Will Matt’s mysterious past hinder them from tasting the blossoms of love?

I was hooked by the first line with the beautiful writing. The story itself quickly reeled me in with the conflicts of its two, endearing, main characters. Carrie makes history come alive with her words and brings her southern setting to life so that I felt I was right there on a gorgeous Virginia plantation in the midst of the Civil War.

It is 1862 and thespian Matthew Scott is abducted from Ohio and the theater troupe he manages. He is conscripted against his will into serving with the Confederate army because of his father’s political leanings. He is not a soldier and feels lost and out of place as he follows the troops to Shirley Plantation in Virginia. There he meets the lovely Angelina Rose and begins to feel some hope and the stirrings of love. With her fair skin, Matt does not know Angie is a freed slave of mixed race. She was given an opportunity to leave the south and start a new life for herself, but she did not take it because she has been working as a seamstress to earn the freedom of her deceased sister’s illegitimate twins. Matt knows nothing of this. He only knows that he is falling in love with a mysterious woman, and there is something very suspicious about his father’s claims of having no family.

A lot of story is packed into this beautiful, redemptive novella. It was a pure joy to read and reminded me of why I love reading historical romance novels!

~ Return to Shirley Plantation by Carrie Fancett Pagels ~

I thought that when I set out to read a Civil War novella that I wouldn't get into them, as I am not a war type person, but I love history and historical fiction. I just love the Heroin Angelina and her love for others, for family and for those she is loyal to work for, as well as her care for those wounded. As I came to the end of this story I was so wanting another book to read that continued on and on and on... Does it have to end ? I think I may reread it ! I feel that Murray Pura did well in choosing Carrie Fancett Pagels to write this novella for the Civil War Series... I have not been disappointed one bit with any of the authors he has chosen. I had to keep the tissues handy for this one at times. It is full of love, suspense and so much detail to its historical content and you can feel and see the scenes as you are reading them. This is one Civil War novella you will not want to miss ! Awesome ! Carrie, just awesome !

Carrie Fancett Pagels has written a wonderfully detailed account of life for southerners in the Civil War. I was particularly interested in this story as I am a native Virginian and Shirley Plantation is set in Virginia. I admired the courage and strength shown by Angelina and Matthew. This story made me think about my own heritage and family history and the skeletons in the closet. We all have secrets kept by our families and this story will reveal some shocking ones to the characters. Wonderful work, Carrie!

This is a wonderful novella Civil War Romance. I read the book a good while back but this time I listened to the audio. The narrator was great and pleasant to the ears. I enjoyed the story as much the second time as I did the first time. Even though this was a novella I enjoyed the characters and the plot. I loved Angelina with her sweet spirit but she held firm in what she thought the Lord bid her to do. She gave up her chance to go North to complete freedom because she didn’t want to leave her niece and nephew and that made me really like her. I was so glad when she met Matthew with his kind personality. Lots of historical details are some of what I enjoy about Historical Fiction. This story had some true things to happen and the place is real. My kind of book.
I recommend this book if you like Historical Romance.

This short novella is an introduction to the Civil War Series co-written with Murray Pura. Typical of most novellas it was hard to see character depth in a story this short. I did like both Matthew and Angelina and felt sad for them as they each had a hidden past that kept them from reaching their full potentials in this time and place. As usual, Pagels historical detail was well researched and added depth and interest to the story line. As this is the introduction for this series, it does accomplish its purpose of encouraging the reader to continue on.

Civil War Romantic Drama! 5 Stars!
I read this on the fifth anniversary of its first publication. It is a very good Civil war romantic drama. I loved the beautiful details of the Shirley Plantation. While horrors of war and the stench of death were ever present in this captivating story, I thoroughly enjoyed the connections Matthew developed with other characters. Angelina was my favorite. She showed such strength in following God's guidance.
I highly recommend this book!

Carrie Fancett Pagels has spun gold in her tale about a real and beautiful place and time, with elements of romance and fiction told by a master story teller. This debut novella, part of the Civil War collection by Murray Pura, depicts the story of a Copperhead senator's son from Ohio who is conscripted by the Confederate army. Matthew Scott is a thespian whose theater troupe makes loose ties to John Wilkes Booth. Before he knows it, Matthew finds himself serving on the front lines in Virginia, and among the wounded transported to Shirley Plantation near Harrison's Landing.
Angelina Rose is a 1/8 black former slave woman who would have gone North except for two things, her commitment to her niece and nephew still in slavery's grip, and a strong impression from the Lord to wait. When Matthew arrives as one of the wounded, they catch one another's eye.
How will a Union man escape forced conscription into an army he does not sympathize with? Matthew faces this dilemma and others, wondering why the Lord has led him here. Could it be that God's leading could bring love, answers to long-standing questions of his past, and a new family he never imagined?
This novella is a big story wrapped in a short package. A heart stealing cast of characters and a lovely, authentic, and well researched setting will delight every fan of historical fiction, and the sweet and satisfying romance will make you wish this book could go on forever.
A great new voice from debut author Carrie Fancett Pagels will surely make you put her on your watch list of new talent.

Return To Shirley Plantation by Carrie Fancett Pagels is a Christian historical novella set in 1862 during the American Civil War.
There are several themes within the novella including that of trusting in God and in His timing. Angelina, a free slave trusts God. She listened to His whispers. She could have gone North but obeyed God and stayed put. It is always important to obey when one hears His voice.
Carrie Fancett Pagels has delightfully drawn Angelina's niece and nephew. As a reader I could 'see' them clearly. They reminded me of the children in the 1942 film Holiday Inn.
War is always futile but civil war seems even more of a waste. So many men get injured or lose their lives. There are no winners in war. It seems like all families are affected. The burden to cope falls on the women. Carrie Fancett Pagels has drawn strong women who have to keep Shirley Plantation going. They also have to face the soldiers who take over their home. The women must be resourceful and stick together in order to survive.
The theme of slavery is present in the novel. Slavery is wrong. God created all men free. Many characters in the novel believe in the emancipation of slaves.
I enjoyed Return To Shirley Plantation, learning about the civil war as I relaxed on my sofa. The characters were well drawn and I could empathise with Angelina. I always enjoy Carrie Fancett Pagels stories and urge you to download one today.

What I Loved

Matthew is torn from his theatrical troupe and forced to fight. Angelina gave up a new beginning for the sake of those who need her most. Both have encountered hardship, but now they face an even greater conflict--the Civil War.

I really liked this view into a time that is easy to pass over with a shake of the head. Pagels provides an intriguing look into a Southern home where all is not as it seems and facades are precious. I enjoyed the fact that Matthew and Angelina are sweet with each other from the beginning (seems like the trend in historical fiction is a hero and heroine who start out annoyed with each other...though that can be hilarious to read, it was nice to read this adorable couple's interchanges and see them being nice!).

I also liked the level of intrigue the author supported from the beginning. Secrets are everywhere! A mystery is unraveled in the end--and a twister I did not see coming certainly threw me for quite the loop!

What I Didn't Like As Much

Because there was a bit of intrigue going on in the background, I was confused at a couple key passages. Also, the abundance of characters was a bit much for my taste for the length of this story. However, everything balanced out in the end, and I really enjoyed this book!

Looking for a dip into American history? With fine writing? And characters whose hearts prove stronger than their struggles? Check out Carrie Fancett Pagels fiction debut, Return to Shirley Plantation.

"Murray Pura's Cry of Freedom - Volume 1 - Return To Shirley Plantation (Murray Pura's American Civil War Series - Cry of Freedom)" by Carrie Fancett Pagels gets 5 stars from me. I was going to wait till these volumes came out as a complete book but I can honestly say I am glad I didn't but now I will be in line ( I know no lines for an ebook, but you all know what I mean) with all those others that are eagerly waiting for the next installment of these great stories. If you haven't brought short novells and wanted to try and see what the new big thing in ebook was this is the series to try if you like history and romance in the same story!
Matthew Scott was owner of Scott's Theatrical Troupe and he was abduction into the army to be a Confederate solider. Angelina Rose was a freed slave but was a servant in the Carter's household when the Army takes over Shirley Plantation. Angelina pretends to be a widow but the attraction is instant between Matthew and Angelina. There is a secret that Matthew doesn't know and when he does find out the reader learns the reason for the title to this story. This story is both heartwarming as well as heartbreaking like moments in wartime are. Does the war allow Matthew and Angelina to be together and will Angelina's dream of going to Ohio finally happened? I recommend this series to everyone!

I have often read Carrie's blogs and have really enjoyed her book reviews. So I was very interested to learn that she had written a novella. This story takes place during the Civil War and we start out right in the middle of the action. Mathew our hero, who is from Ohio and runs a theater group, has been knocked out and conscripted into the Confederate army. Angelina our heroine is a freed woman (only 1/8 black) staying on Shirley Plantation to take care of and eventually have freedom for her niece and nephew. Different regiments of both armies bring their wounded and camp out at the plantation. We also get to know the side characters a bit as well, who from the notes are not all fictitious characters. We meet evil men and good men on all sides of the war. Plus, there are secrets revealed through one family tree. There is also the romance that is threaded through the story. It was sad to read about the prejudices people had against each other for even one drop of blood of another race. Not quite fitting in with one race or the other. But, like one character realized, they are a child of God and that is all that matters. I look forward to reading more of Carrie's work. She packed a punch in this one, I can only imagine what she could do in a full length novel. I received this from bookfun.org for my honest opinion.

I was sent a copy of this book from www.bookfun.org in exchange for my honest review.

What a wonderful book, I enjoyed it very much.

Matthew Scott was kidnapped from his Theatrical Troupe and sent to war.

Angelina Rose is a slave on Shirley Plantation who became free and was working to become a seamstress to pay for the freedom of her niece and nephew. Angelina is part black and part white.

The Union Army took over the entire lawn of the Shirley Plantation. And they set up a hospital which Angelina, her niece and nephew helped with the wounded.

Angelina pretended to be part of the Carter family since she didn't look black and could pass as a family member.

Angelina and Matthew start spending time together and Matthew finds out that Angelina is not part of the family but a free slave who stayed to help her family.

There was an older slave that everyone called Granny who turns out to be Matthew's great grandmother.

Matthew and Angelina end up falling in love and are getting married as soon as they can.

At the end of the book President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation became law, so Angelina's niece and nephew became free and they ask along with Matthew if they can go with the Army wounded north to freedom which the General agreed to.

Matthew Scott is the owner of a theatrical troupe, who finds himself conscripted into the Confederate Army against his will because of his father's political leanings.

Angelina is a free woman, taking care of her sister's children who are slaves at Shirley Plantation.

But when the war brings Matthew and Angelina together, mysteries are uncovered and friendships are forged.

Well written and researched, with a steady pace that made for a quick read, Return to Shirley Plantation was a sweet novella with snapshots of life on Shirley Planation during the Civil War.

I immediately liked and sympathized with the main characters Angelina and Matthew, from the start. They both were not in the most ideal situations but had to depend on God, and trust that they were where they were supposed to be.

Overall a great novella, that I enjoyed and wished was longer so I could find out what happened to them next. I guess the only thing is that I wished there were more scenes in the book between Angelina and Matthew so I could see how their relationship grew. This was a great novella, well worth the read.

What a great story! I’m not a fan of historical fiction, but I found myself eager to see what happened to the characters in this charming enovella. Matthew Scott is conscripted into the Confederate army with only the experience of owning a theatrical group to sustain him among the other soldiers. He carefully observes those around him, offers any help that is required while the soldiers occupy Shirley Plantation, and watches Angelina Rose, resident seamstress and guardian of her nephew and niece since her sister’s death. Even though Angelina is free, she is confident of the need to stay and watch her niece and nephew until President Lincoln passes the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves.

I truly enjoyed how Pagels brings history to life with the setting, characters, and dynamics at Shirley Plantation. The reader gets to experience the controversy, politics, and faith of these characters had to go through while waiting on God to bring about true freedom for all. You will understand the urgency of their situations while watching Matthew and Angelina enjoy romance and hope as they realize the future God had intended for them all along.

What a soul searching novel or novella. Well written, with plenty of vivid imagery to bring the characters to life. Carrie has written this first piece of the Cry of Freedom with enough drama and suspense that I as a reader was kept turning pages rapidly (or in this case, as it is an ebook, sliding from page to page) to find out what was happening next. Learn first hand through her writing what life was like in the deep south during the civil war...secrets kept not for the sake of keeping secrets, but because lives actually depended on it. Would I be willing to do what Angelina, a freed slave working as a seamstress in slave country did? Matthew too is keeping secrets, and his family kept secrets from him. How sad that sometimes we think we are doing others a benefit by not telling them something, and even more devastating to know that racism is still being practiced today.
I was immediately drawn into Carrie's story, and was disappointed when it came to a close. I want to know what happens to the family and will be watching for a sequel.

I just enjoyed this book so much. What a great story and what a wonderful author Murry Pura is. He takes you into the story and brings it
to life. You feel you are there.

The main character is Angelina who is a free woman. She is at the plantation working to free her sisters children. She had to chance to leave and work up north as a seamstress but could not leave with the children. She felt that God wanted her to stay.

We find her a woman of deep faith and her trust in God is strong. Angelina feels God has something in store for her. She is not sure what this maybe but she feels she will know when it is time. The northern army has taken over the plantain she is on and set up a hospital there.

The women of this plantain have been instructed to help and have been given protection. The Northern General thinks Angelina is part of the family and a widow.

Angelina meets Matt Scott who was captured by the Northern Army and brought with the wounded to the plantain. They have feels for each other but will the war mix things up for them. Will they marry when the war is over. Is this why God has kept Angelina there.

The story held me right from the beginning to the end.

Matthew is the owner of a theatrical company and is conscripted into the rebel army as he's leaving the theater one night. I really loved his character. He is a gallant and noble man. His feelings for Angelina run deep and he has ample opportunity to offer her protection.

Angelina is committed to caring for her orphaned niece and nephew no matter the personal sacrifice, even when circumstances are favorable to escape from her life of slavery. How many people would give up an opportunity like that in order to care for children? I think it shows she holds life in high esteem and it displays her exceptional character.

There is no doubt as you read along that the author has done an outstanding job researching the history surrounding Shirley Plantation. With exceptional word craftsmanship, God's providence is shown in the most spectacular way. When I finished this novella I was quite surprised by the twist near the end. It is brilliant!

I was a beta reader for the author but in no way did that influence how much I enjoyed this debut novella! I received no compensation for this review.

Murray Pura’s American Civil War Series, Cry of Freedom Vol 1 The Return to Shirley Plantation : A civil war Romance Story written by Carrie Fancett Pagele.
Story takes place at the Shirley Plantation at Charles City, Virginia. The home of the Carter Family. Mary and two of her daughter in-laws are having tea. With them is Angelina a freed woman. During the time of tea they are reading scriptures from the Bible. All that really is in Angelina’s mind is freeing the kids.
The confederates are now there and have taken over the plantation. Lots of wounded soldiers. Some are kept for trade to get back their officers. One Sergeant has his eyes on Angelina to take advantage of her. Angelina has fallen for Matt Scott. Will the war end, will she marry Matt these are questions I’m leaving you with get the short story. I’m sure you will enjoy it. I fully enjoyed the story looking forward to part 2.
I was given this book to read for my own personal review.

Return to Shirley Plantation shows us that although we may not understand why we are in a certain situation; there is a reason for everything. When we trust in the Lord, he will lead us in the direction he wants us to go. Matthew Scott is a testimony to this fact. His father landed himself in his present circumstance. For starters, his father tried to mold him into someone he is not which led Matthew to start a theatrical troop. His seamstress failed to show up when agreed and he found himself thrown into the Confederate Army because of his father’s political views. Matthew’s father has also kept his family history a secret. However, as circumstances befall Matthew, he finds himself full circle at Shirley Plantation where he learns about his family history, finds his missing seamstress, and love. Matthew’s story is not the only one you will find at Shirley Plantation. Come along to Shirley Plantation and meet everyone.

Angelina Rose is a freed slave who chose to stay in Virginia until she could save enough money to pay the owners of her niece and nephew for their freedom, then she would move north. She had a job lined up as a seamstress up north but declined so she could be with her sisters kids.

Matthew Scott was abducted against his will and conscripted into the Confederate army because of his Copperhead father’s political leaning but his mother was a strong abolitionist. He ended up on Shirley Plantation as a wounded soldier.

What I thought would be a war story turned out to be more of a personal story and thoroughly enjoyable to read. Carrie did a wonderful job of holding my interest in this short story and made it a very quick read for me. I've read some books that take place during the civil war and I prefer this kind, more about the people and what they went through.
