Full-color photos. Trace the history and lore of a favorite folk hero--from ancient Mongolian herdsmen to South American gauchos to good ol' American cowpokes. Photos of actual clothing worn by famous cowboys and outlaws are included.
I really liked this. I learned a lot. I have always been one of those who thinks of cowboys as part of the American West -- plus some vaqueros. Murdoch brought out "cowboys" from all different parts of the world. I thought it was really interesting how many of our words come because of the vaqueros teaching Americans a thing or two about cattle and how to be a cowboy. I didn't love the format of the book, but I got over that. It was a short, interesting read.
What?: This book is formatted in an encyclopedia style. There are numerous topics with an introduction, real-life photos, labeling, and a short description of each item. Topics include: hats, boots and spurs, dressing like a cowboy, life on a ranch, dangers on the trail, law and order, guns and gunslingers, and cowboys from around the world.
So what?: Students will be able to learn about all the facets of a cowboy through vivid photographs, expand vocabulary, and learn the history of some items.
Now what?: I will have the students select a topic and create a presentation with items to be displayed or worn. Another choice is to research a cowboy from another country and describe their life, history, and clothing unique to them.
If you have any age reader who needs to know more about cowboys and the time they lived in this is an excellent resource book for them! The photographs in this book are amazing. The author does a masterful job of explaining the different items a cowboy would have used in their daily routine. Horse lovers would enjoy this book too!
