Kids will giggle, guffaw, and gasp with glee as they pore through the pages of this charming story. This favorite nursery rhyme has been transformed into a riotous picture book. Colorful and exuberant watercolors make six witty new verses dance with sunny humor. Sure to become a favorite of young and old alike.
Eagle presents the further adventures of our favorite snoring senior citizen. Join the elderly man, whose name we learn is Willy, as he travels rather clumsily through the year. It's easy to see why he doesn't want to get up in the morning.
2. Appropriate grade level(s): Kindergarten through second grade
3. Original 3-line summary: This book is a spin on the song most kids know about the rain and thunderstorms. It goes the song that is known, then adds on what else the old man does. It goes through the different seasons, discussing the activities the old man, and his wife, do.
4. Original 3-line review: I think this is a cute retelling of the song. The author turns the song into a story with characters and more activities that go on. The story is even able to explain the difference between seasons.
5. 2-3 possible in-class uses: • have students draw pictures and explain their favorite season, as what activities they like to do during it. • Make a collage type of class project where we take all the students work about each season and make a timeline of how the seasons go
I read this book today with my kiddos for Weather week and it is a great book/ nursery rhyme that has been in my household for a very long time. My mom used to sing this song to me in the car when I was younger when it would be raining so this was a great refresher to be able to read this to my kiddos and react how I did when I was younger. The illustrations located in this story is a story on its own, even without the words in the story the illustrations are so descriptive that you will be able to create your own story.
This charming rendition of the well-known, nonsensical children’s rhyme, complete with humorous, full-page illustrations, is perfect for parents and children to enjoy together. Young readers will enjoy following the old man’s delightful adventures as the story unfolds.
For the musically inclined, the entire song, with music, is included at the end of the story.
This book is about the tradition "It's raining. it's pouring" nursery rhyme. It tells the story with very great pictures. It would be a good book to read when learning about the weather and the rain.
1. n/a 2. PreK-2nd grade 3. This story is song/story about an old man on a rainy day. Then it incorporates different types of weather and settings in the story. This longer version of the original songs which gives a children a more detail about the story. 4. This is a classic nursery rhyme/song that has been sung to children all throughout history. I like how the author put extended some of the verses in the song. 5. This book could used on rainy days, like a weather themed day. It can also be sung as a class while sitting on the rug.
I liked the rhyming of the book but I really dont like the way the book is laid out. It seems like a lot is going on and it really doesnt teach much. I feel like this should have had some repetitivness so that children could remember what the story is about.
Activiy: I would have the children learn the song It's rainging, it's pouring and we would stand up and act out the song with movements. This would help children learn about rhyming, musically and physically engaging. They could even come up with their own movements and have us follow them. After we finished the song we would discuss weather, seasons and what they like most about the story and song and if they could change it what would they suggest??
Kin Eagle manages to take the classic rhyme "It's raining, it's pouring" and ruin it. Okay, I know that when you're doing a concept book based on a traditional rhyme you may have to reach a bit to make it work. However, I just can't find any redeeming value in the verse:
"It's gusty, it's windy. The old man's wife is Cindy. With ants in their pants they started to dance, and ended up doing the Lindy."
I have no idea what the Lindy is, and I'm over 20 years older than any child I'd even consider reading this to.
k-1 (read aloud) Eagle does a good job of using easy to read rhyme. Each stanza is 2-3 lines. The illustrations show exactly what is happening in the story. The old couples facial expressions are very realistic. I think young children would love looking at the illustrations they would find them very funny.
This book starts out with the verse "It's raining, it's pouring," as the title suggests, but unfortunately, the verse quality goes way down from there. It's quite bad. To be fair, though, my three-year-old son liked it well enough.
It was only ok. I like that the rhymes was so extended, but it was a little too long for me. And some of them verses seemed a little forced. But, I could imagine it working quite nicely for a preschool storytime with a weather theme.
This was a cute book to read for a Storytime theme of weather. I would agree with other reviewers that some of the rhymes were of poor quality and referenced pop culture that is way too old for when it was published (1994)
This is a fun book, with several weather and season-related verses of the classic nursery rhyme. The illustrations are fun, too; our girls really enjoyed reading and singing along with this book.
