The classic "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" comes to life through amazing pop-ups and fun illustrations. Join Captain Nemo's underwater adventure -- but keep your eyes peeled! 8 pages.
Really weird book. I think it only makes sense to those who have read the original. I don’t think a kid will get it. But paper engineering is sensational!
For the sake of making this tale suitable for a short pop-up book, the author/artist had to severely reduce the original tale's length. Thus, what you get in this book is a dramatically abrupt story: major events in the original story are truncated to the point of barely making any sense, so as to fit within a double page spread. The prose itself is ridiculously simplistic, to the point where a lot of the dialogue doesn't flow well, and I was often confused as to what was actually happening and how much time had passed between panels and pages. Additionally, as others have said, the drawings themselves are quite childish, which also added to the confusion as it was sometimes difficult to understand what was happening in some of the panels... All that said, however, the actual papercraft (the pop-up element) is really, really cool and extremely well done - which salvaged several stars in this book's overall review. And so: the story itself, as it is presented here, only gets 1/2 a star; however, the pop-up elements are just so well-done, they raise the book's overall score to 3.5 stars.
Graphic Novel Ita, Sam. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: A Pop-Up Book In this pop-up, graphic novel version of 20,00 Leagues Under the Sea the reader will be without breath at the sight of the amazing pop-ups. The story is of course shortened, but all the major details are included. The story takes us through Captain Nemo's adventures on the Nautilus. With monsters and mysterious secrets this book is sure to capture the interest of children and those who have read the book. (ages 10+)
The pop-ups in this book were very impressive, unfortunately, the quality of the art was poor, even juvenile. It diminished the overall quality of the book.
The pop ups are amazingly intricate, and it was fun exploring how the folded bits operated! The story of Captain Nemo is severely truncated and a bit incoherent, so this would not be a good introductory text. But for those already familiar with the original, this makes a lovely few minutes of amusement.
