Valerie Thomas is the author of the bestselling and much loved Winnie the Witch picture books, illustrated by Korky Paul.
Valerie was born in Australia and has lived there for most of her life. Although she doesn’t have a broomstick, she has traveled to most parts of the world, and she is now trying to organize her life so that she never has to experience another winter. She used to live with a big black cat exactly like Wilbur, but luckily her house was not black.
Winnie the Witch and her cat Wilbur are two of my favourite characters in children's literature and in this exciting story the pair of them have great fun with a magic flying carpet.
It all began with Winnie writing thank you letters for her birthday presents but one of them presented her with a problem. Her sisters Wilma, Wanda and Wendy had given her a flying carpet, something Winnie had always wanted. But this carpet had been a disaster.
When trying it out it, first of all got tangled in Winnie's washing line, then it tipped over when she was flying over a duck pond, SPLASH went Winnie and Wilbur. And after it had turned a corner too quickly and collided with a cyclist, Winnie decided that enough was enough and she rolled it up, tied it with string and put it in the broom cupboard and locked the door.
Even so, Winnie still wanted to write something complimentary in her thank you letter so to assist her she got the carpet out of the cupboard and spread it out on the armchair. Looking at it she decided that it was a beautiful carpet and that it was a pity not to use it. As she was wondering what to do, the door bell rang, DING DONG. Winnie rushed off to answer it and at the same moment Wilbur reentered the house, spotted the carpet and, as cats so often do, decided that it would make a nice place to sleep. He was soon snoring so he did not realise that the carpet waited only one minute and then rose gently into the air. As it flew round the room Wilbur was so fast asleep he did not wake up.
Next thing the carpet zoomed out of the window and Wilbur woke, MEEOOW!, he cried. Winnie, by then at the door, looked up just in time to spot the carpet flying by. She grabbed her magic wand and her broomstick and zoomed up into the sky after Wilbur and the carpet. Over a clock tower, under a bridge they went with Winnie calling, 'Hang on tight, Wilbur!' The only response was a loud MEEOOW!
The carpet next flew over a funfair, down the Roller Coaster Rocket and on the Terrible Twister the carpet went, enjoying itself all the time. Wilbur on the other hand was having a terrible time. Winnie feared she would never catch them until she decided to wave her magic wand and shout ABRACADABRA! Everything stopped, nothing whizzed or zoomed or shrieked or splashed and Winnie jumped onto the carpet as Wilbur responded with a PURR.
Winnie wanted to go home so she rolled up the carpet, waved her wand backwards, shouted ABRACADABRA! and everything started again. Whee! Zoom! Whizzzz! Vroom! they went on the broomstick and in no time at all they were back in Winnie's garden. Winnie wondered what to do with the carpet. She pondered and then had an idea and with a shout of ABRACADABRA! the carpet was magically tied to two trees in the form of a beautiful hammock. Winnie and Wilbur jumped on it as it rocked gently in the breeze.
'This is so comfortable, Wilbur,' said Winnie. But Wilbur did not hear her, he was already fast asleep.
Once again delightfully illustrated by Korky Paul, this is another exciting adventure in the life and times of Winnie the Witch and Wilbur. Not to be missed!
Picking up right where Happy Birthday, Winnie! - the previous entry in Australian author Valerie Thomas and British illustrator Korky Paul's series of picture-books devoted the adventures of Winnie the witch and her cat Wilbur - ended, this ninth title opens as our eponymous witch-heroine struggles to write an appropriate thank-you letter to her sisters Wilma, Wanda and Wendy. Although the flying carpet they gave her creates catastrophe every time it is used, Winnie wants to say something nice about it in her letter, deciding to give it one last try. Taking it out of the closet where it has been stored for safe-keeping, she is called away by the arrival of the postman, and doesn't see Wilbur climb onto it and fall asleep. She knows soon enough, of course, as the carpet takes off with a yowling Wilbur aboard, and Winnie must set out in hot pursuit. Will she catch the carpet in time to save her cat? If she does, what can be done with it...?
I enjoyed Winnie's Flying Carpet quite a bit - practically a foregone conclusion, given my fondness for 'witchy' tales, and my appreciation for previous forays into Thomas and Paul's magical world - and found both narrative and artwork immensely appealing. I appreciated Winnie's solution to the question of what to do with a carpet that doesn't want to stop moving, and thought that the incorporation of thank-you writing in the story, as a follow-up to the birthday tale that preceded it, provided a gentle, non-intrusive lesson for young readers on the importance of good manners. I mentioned in my review of Winnie's Magic Wand that the artwork in that title included various examples of Greek lettering, which I took to be a response to the fact that the story idea for that book came from a group of schoolchildren in Cyprus, but I have noticed the continued use of the Greek alphabet in subsequent titles, and think perhaps it is just a feature of Korky Paul's artwork. Apparently he spent some time working for a Greek publisher, on books intended for use in teaching English to Greek children, so perhaps his continued use of Greek lettering is a tribute to the children he met in that country? As someone who reads Greek (classical, not modern!), it's fun to pick out some of the little details, such as the names on Winnie's letters - one says 'Helen Mortimer' in the Greek alphabet - or beneath various portraits in her study. As always, there is a colourful, madcap zaniness to Paul's artwork, which is full of little details that children will enjoy studying. The tradition in which the endpapers for the books in this series are provided by child fans continues here, as an eleven-year-old girl and eight-year-old boy contributed the front and rear endpaper illustrations. All in all, another winner in the Winnie the Witch series, which I look forward to continuing. Hopefully at some point I'll also get to the Winnie chapter-books.
A really humorous tale of a wayward flying carpet that could give the carpet in Searching for Dragons a run for its money! Will Winnie and her cat Wilbur ever manage to get it working properly, or is it destined to become a proper gangsta style waistcoat for Wilbur or perhaps a new pair of shoes for Winnie? And will Winnie ever manage to find something good to write about it in her thank you letter? You'll just have to read it to find out!
I can't comment on the CD as this is a gift and I don't want to risk damaging it.
I don't usually like Halloween books however, Winnie won me over.
Winnie is very conscientious and sends out thank you notes for all her birthday presents, a wonderful demonstration on one way to be grateful.
One particular gift, a flying carpet, has proved to be a disappointment. Regardless, Winnie wants to find a way to say thank you for the gift AND to find a purpose for the rather 'unique' behaviour of the the flying carpet.
Light, good natured humour and sweet. An enjoyable read. I also enjoyed the chalk drawings on the inside covers!
Winnie's sisters, Wilma, Wanda, and Wendy, had given her a flying carpet. Winnie had always wanted a flying carpet. But this flying carpet had been a disappointment.
Actually, it had been a disaster.
More madcap capers with Winnie and her trusty sidekick, Wilbur the black cat. This time they have to contend with a magic carpet which seemingly has a mind of its own.
Whereas I ama fan of W's Amazing Pumpkin, I didn't like this story so well, the end didn't bind together with the beginning and the story was somehow sweaty :(
I found that this book had good use of problem solving, and very involved pictures. However, I'm not a huge fan of the illustration style, and I found the plot could have been just a little more involved.....
Cute little story to read around Halloween. Misbehaving flying carpet gives Winnie and her cat a bit of a hard time and produces a lovely tale to entertain the kiddos. Will be on the lookout for the other books from the Winnie Witch series.
