A dark presence had invaded the Jorgensens' house. On a spectacular bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, something evil is watching and waiting . . .
Tired of the cold winters in Washington, D.C. and disturbed by her increasingly obsessive boyfriend, Kailani Kanaka savors her move back to her native Big Island of Hawaii. She also finds a new job as personal chef for the Jorgensen family. The gentle caress of the Hawaiian trade winds, the soft sigh of the swaying palm trees, and the stunning blue waters of the Pacific lull her into a sense of calm at the House of Hanging Jade--an idyll that quickly fades as it becomes apparent that dark secrets lurk within her new home. Furtive whispers in the night, a terrifying shark attack, and the discovery of a dead body leave Kailani shaken and afraid. But it's the unexpected appearance of her ex-boyfriend, tracking her every move and demanding she return to him, that has her fearing for her life . . .

Getting tired of the cold winters in Washington D.C. and missing her family Kailani Kanaka wants nothing more than to return to Hawaii. Trying to get her resume out and a find a job before she makes the big move she receives a call offering her a job to be the personal chef for the Jorgensen family. Looking to get back home and away from the guy she had been seeing she accepts the job and packs for home.
Unfortunately for Kailani as much as she loves her new job she finds herself in the middle of secrets and lies and soon a dead body turns up. Everyone is a suspect and to make matters worse Kailani's ex boyfriend shows up on the island and won't take no for an answer and leave Kailani alone.
House of the Hanging Jade starts off feeling a bit like a nice little cozy mystery but I think what hooked me into enjoying this read was it turned more into a soap opera-ish type of drama read. Everyone in the book has a story and their lives are intertwined with not only each other but with the mystery going on.
One of the things I also loved the most about this read was the setting. I could honestly feel as if I were hanging out on the lanai watching the ocean waves along with everyone in the story. Hawaii is a beautiful place that I would love to go myself someday and it just felt as if the sun and surf just oozed right off the pages while reading, such a lovely place to set a story. Kailani also being a personal chef was constantly cooking up such lovely things that reminds one of being on an island which adds to the fun of the read, be careful not to read while hungry the book just may give you more cravings.
The characters in this read were sometimes over the top with their actions but the drama kept me hooked regardless. Affairs, lies, deceit, stalking, and a murder added into the mix all kept the pages turning to see how it would all turn out.
Overall, not necessarily the best mystery out there but I still found myself quite intrigued with the drama and enjoyed the setting.

"Something evil is watching and waiting..." What evil exactly?
House of the Hanging Jade, undeniably, has an intriguing premise, but what we got was a pseudo-suspense that was never tangible. The synopsis pretty much gives away the events within this novel, and that's precisely what the book is; a recounting of events with no story to tell, with the most basic telenovela plot.
There was no depth to the characters, no enticing backstory, only monotone people reacting to the day by day occurrences with unrealistic interactions. It tried and failed to portray complex and complicated characters in tangled situations; they ended up being dull and transparent.
Overall, House if the Hanging Jade was a tedious novel with no specific genre; what was it trying to tell the reader? Was this supposed to be a mystery? A study on infidelity? A cookbook?
This is the first book by Amy Reade that I have read but it definitely will not be the last.
Kailani Kanaka has had enough of the harsh winters in Washington D.C. so she decides to return home to Hawaii. She quickly finds a job working as a personal chef for the Jorgensens. Barbie Jorgensen wants her family to eat more healthy foods, while her husband Lars, and the kids, Marcus and Justine, love things like chips, hamburgers and pot roast. She grows close to the children as she teaches them about more healthy treats and teaches them a little cooking as well. She is so happy and feels at home.
But things are a little more cloudy in the household. Mom seems to be having an affair with a doctor living in the guest house, and Dad seems to know but Kailani tries to remain neutral and putsthe kids needs first. Then the man is founds dead in the pool and Kailani wonders if Lars got rid of his competition. As if there is not enough drama, her ex, Geoffrey, from Washington, shows up and is determined to win her back. She had no serious feelings for him when she left but apparently he did. She becomes unnerved when she finds him stalking her and demanding they get back together.
First of all the Hawaiian setting and the Jogensen’s home sounds absolutely fabulous. I hope someday to see the surf and sand myself. I don’t understand how anyone could ever leave the islands to live somewhere like D.C.
The characters Amy Reade brings to life in the pages are vibrant, complex, and real. Kailani has a good soul and tries to see the best in everyone. Her boyfriend goes from quirky to crazy in a hurry. Barbi Jorgensen seems to be into every man except for her husband. Lars is a good man, in a tough spot. The oldest son Marcus is having trouble adjusting to life in Hawaii. The family has recently moved from California. Justine is at a tender age so Kalani feels very protective of her. We also meet Kailani’s family and her friend, Liko, who becomes the children’s tutor.
The Jorgensen home is a house full of secrets and Kailani seems to be caught in the middle.
There are more than a few suspenseful moments in this book. One where Kailani gets up close and personal with a shark. I think I held my breathe the whole time I was reading about that adventure. But it was the final twist that had me almost hyperventilating. So good, so, so good!
This is a excellent piece of suspense fiction. I could easily see it made into a movie of the week.
This was an absolutely stunning thriller! With a captivating storyline, perfect dialogue and extremely complex characters, I was eagerly absorbed into reading this story late into the night. There were tons of twists and turns being revealed throughout the whole story, and it was a blast trying to figure out the culprit in the book. The author's knowledge and descriptions of all the different food also definitely had me devouring this book as quick as I could! I absolutely enjoyed reading this thrilling book and can't wait to see what else the author has written!
I always enjoy a lighter read when I travel, and this fit the bill. Great setting of Hawaii, yummy scenes about food, and enough mystery to keep me guessing. I enjoyed the fluent writing style and the wonderful descriptions, particularly of the Hawaiian landscape and the culinary delights. There are heavier themes of marital strife, adultery, and stalking though, so the book has ample literary heft. Made my plane ride fly by.
When chef Kailani Kanaka decides to leave the frigid temps in Washington D.C. to return to her roots on the big island of Hawaii, she looks forward to the warm weather activities and having her family close-by once again. A dream job as personal chef for the affluent Jorgensen family gives her a stunning venue to live and work in. All seems perfect at the House of Hanging Jade that overlooks the sea, but she soon finds that the family's personal issues and an ex-boyfriend's unwanted arrival on the island may tarnish her fresh start.
Secret relationships, a sudden death and a shark attack at sea put a strain on Kailani as she slowly bonds with the members of the family and lends a friendly ear to sort out some of the issues they face. Her ex is getting more aggressive as she tries to convince him to stay away, will he ever realize their relationship is over? Strange occurrences and another death bring the police in to investigate. Will they find the person(s) behind the violence?
Author Reade weaves a tale of mystery and intrigue in an idyllic, island setting. As the dangers escalate, you hold your breath, waiting to see what will happen next. This is a thriller that will delight the senses and keep you guessing time and time again. A tale of suspense and family dramas, highly recommended!
I loved every second of this book! The depth of the characters, the beautiful imagery of the island, and the shock of the mysteries kept me turning page after page. I couldn’t put it down! An easy 5 stars.
House of the Hanging Jade takes place in none other than Hawaii!!!! I know, I know, just hearing Hawaii makes you want to read it, right? I personally have never been to Hawaii, but while I was reading I felt as though I was right there. Amy has a way of drawing her readers right into the setting. She does this by describing the intricate details of the area. Every time she mentioned the hanging Jade, I could almost smell it. Of course, when I lived in Florida, I had some Jade around my house, so I know that glorious smell. Let’s talk about the food. Anybody who follows Amy already knows that she loves Hawaiian food. Me, well, I am not a lover of seafood, however, the descriptions of the foods and the use of these words throughout the meal preparation and shopping for ingredients made me think. Hmmm, all kinds of delightful spices, fresh seafood daily, and fresh fruits and vegetables. And not to mention, the Jorgensons have their own Personal Chef! Who wouldn’t want a part of this world?
Oh, but it’s not all glorious, Kailani (I nicknamed her “K” to keep it at one syllable) has to deal with an ex-boyfriend who decides he must have her and follows her to Hawaii. Geoffrey turns out to be a formidable character. No, I don’t like him! My friend “K”and a certain someone will deal with him! Barbie, huh, perfect name for the lady of the house.:-) She is quite the Barbie Doll for sure. I tried to dislike her, but there was something about her, that just made me feel sorry for her. I feel as though, she will never find happiness. I guess that is because she is looking in all the wrong places. Cliche, I know! Lars, well, he is easy to like. A very kind man who does his best to hold his family together. You have to love a man like that. Liko, Shame on you! I expected more from you! You should have listened to your friend “K”. Good Grief! Then there were the kids, Marcus, and Justine. They were typical rich kids who learned to fend for themselves since the parents were never around. Kind of sad, but at the same time intriguing. They learn to both love and hate “K” throughout the story. Oh, I almost forgot Akela, (her nickname is “AK”). Every story needs a family gossip. That is “AKs” role, and she does a really good job.As, if that wasn’t enough of a character list, Amy throws in K’s family, who just happen to own an amazing bakery. Yes, you heard right, a bakery! WOW!
Amy does a wonderful job of building all of these characters throughout the book. It is filled with page-turning events including all of the above and adding mystery, suspense and yes, murder! As I tried to figure out the killer, I was torn between two of the characters. I ended up leaning in the right direction and figured it out before the reveal. There are tons of twists and turns throughout the story, some surprises and some expected, but undoubtedly, this novel is definitely an attention grabber! In case you are wondering, I must give this novel a 5 Star! No doubt about it! I love a good mystery! And Amy does it well!
Before I end my review, I want to take a minute to discuss the cover. Imagine this, sitting on a lanai of a glorious beautiful home facing the Pacific Ocean and this is what you see! Wow, from pictures that I have seen of Hawaii, I would say that this cover does it all extremely well. It’s gorgeous.
Call me silly, but why would anyone want to move away from Hawaii?!?! Well, I'd go on vacation to Scotland from Hawaii, but that would be about it. But I can totally understand the homesickness Kailani experienced in DC.
The growing tension created by her ex-boyfriend showing up in Hawaii, (Kailani was done with him, but he...not so much) were like the incoming waves when the tide was rising, each a little bigger than the last. The first sighting was a surprise. The second was a shock. When he showed up outside the Jorgensen's house, it turned spooky. That wasn't the end of it.
And that wasn't the half of it (it being the troubles centered at the Jorgensen's house) either. The morning after a big house party, one of the guests is found face down in the pool. Apparently the husband is the last to know in this case, as the the 'lady of the house' had been having an affair with the dead guy.
Apparently the Mrs. would share her private time with just about anybody. Because there was a masseur at her spa with whom she was also sleeping. He was found dead later on the ocean side of the house, but I believe that was an accidental death, having to do with too much alcohol and really sharp lava rocks. And...Kailani suggested a friend of hers as tutor for the son, who was struggling in math. And HE took up with the Mrs. as well! It got so bad that it seemed like the only male in Hawaii that Mrs. Jorgensen did not sleep with was her husband!
I really don't know that I would have agreed to keep information like that confidential for a friend. Yes, you don't want something to happen to your friend, but there is loyalty owed to one's employer as well. You wouldn't let someone shoplift if you were working in retail. Someone working in a household should not be stealing from the family either.
Everything came to light in the end anyway. Mrs. turned up pregnant, and not by the Mr. But who was the father? Only the birth would tell.
And the 'last act' of the Kailani and her ex storyline was bite-your-nails, edge-of-your-seat suspenseful! It's hard to say whether I gasped or actually held my breath more! The dude was criminally insane. His physical, emotional and psychological abuse of Kailani was bad enough, but then he started stalking the Jorgensen children. Oh h-e-double-toothpicks NO!
There was so much going on in this story, it could have been a soap opera. But it was all believable to me. Sometimes it just hits the fan. And some lives get more of that than others. Sometimes, through no fault of your own, things don't go your way, or even seem to be actively going against you.
I've always wondered if a writer could set a novel in a place they have not lived, or to which they have not traveled. Ms. Reade lives in New Jersey, but her Hawaii was real to me (and I've been to Hawaii in real life, so I know). I'd like to read one of her other books (set in Thousand Islands, NY, Charleston, SC or the UK) just to see if it is consistent, but I have a feeling she'll do just as good a job with those locales. I definitely see more Reade books in my future.
(Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.)
This was another great book from Amy Reade. I have said it before and I will say it again, her writing reminds me so much of Phyllis Whitney. There is suspense in the story and there is also good relationship elements in the story as well. This one kept me on the edge of my seat. There was so much going on in this book, there was no way to get bored. Kailani was a very strong character and I really liked her. If you are looking for a edge of your seat, page-turner, that has strong writing and relationships in the book, then this is the book for you.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review.
House of the Hanging Jade is a suspenseful tale of murder and obsession, all taking place against a beautiful Hawaiian backdrop. Lush descriptions of both the scenery and the food prepared by the protagonist leave you wanting more. Fans of both gothic romance and mystery novels should enjoy this story.

“House of the Hanging Jade” by Amy Reade was a treat.
This book has a great setting (Hawaii), wonderful characters, twists and turns and a few surprises. My reading time is limited, but I couldn’t wait to pick this one up every day to see what would happen next.
Amy Reade puts the reader in a fantastic setting and a great mystery. I found myself wishing I were the main character . . . until stuff started happening to her, that is. Surprises and suspense will keep you reading this book. Recommended!

My Views: I was an easy book to read and the author told the story plainly and simply. Maybe a bit too simply. You knew exactly what the characters were and how they were going to react to the the present situations. Even though their actions and believes were a tad questionable...the "how could any sane person do something like that" thing...it somehow didn't distract from the telling. Kailani was a chef for the Jorgensen family and throughout the book we learned of the local dishes she created for the dinners, which was very interesting ...especially since she seemed to be able to do that at the drop of a hat:) The ending was a big surprise and not something I had even considered...but probably should have. Not great literature but a very entertaining little book.
House of the Hanging Jade is an enjoyable suspenseful mystery with the beautiful background of Hawaii and some tasty dishes made by the main protagonist, Kailani.
Kailani moves back to her home in Hawaii to enjoy the beauty and warm climate after being in the cold winter of Washington, DC. All she wants is to get back to cooking which she loves to do and spend time with her family. But after she finds a job as a chef for an affluent family, the Jorgensens, she realizes that her life is anything but tranquil when her former boyfriend follows her there. A murder on their doorstep and another body found nearby and a shark attack on Kailani threatens to destroy the family.
The author has created an enjoyable suspenseful mystery with plenty of twists and turns that kept this reader engrossed and eager to find out who was responsible. Would Kailani be safe from her insane ex-boyfriend? Will life ever return to normal for any of them?
Well, I guess you will have to read this book to find out. A engrossing read that will keep you on your toes and thinking. Also, I enjoyed the recipes with all kinds of Hawaiian fish by Kailani within the story.
I really enjoyed this mystery/suspense novel set against the backdrop of a luxurious, sprawling home in Hawaii. Main character Kailani returns from Washington, DC to her beautiful island home for a number of personal reasons. It seems like a great idea at first between the familiarity of the islands and the joy of being reunited with her family. When she quickly lands a job as a personal chef, things appear to be falling into place. But life starts going astray for Kailani in short order between an unsolved murder, a stalking ex-boyfriend, and a blatantly unfaithful employer. (And did I mention the shark?) The story unfolds into a fun and entertaining read, with extra points for the fabulous food aspect while Kailani works her stress away in the kitchen. High marks and recommendations for this suspenseful family-oriented mystery!

Not willing to cope with Washington’s brutal winters, Kailani makes the decision to break up with restaurant owner Geoffrey and leave her job to return home. Back to the warm weather and beauty that is Hawaii, black sand and the curling waves of the Pacific Ocean.
In preparation to return, Kailani searches for employment and secures a position as personal chef to Lars Jorgensen, owner of Kaimana Surf Company and his wife Dr. Barbara Merriweather, on the West Coast of the Big Island in the district of North Kohala.
When she gets there, The Jorgensen’s house is beautiful and this sous-chef is ill prepared for what awaits beyond the lush tropical gardens of palm trees, midnight jasmine, red ginger, and pergola laden with hanging Jade. As Kailani settles in, a series of events begin to unfold that question the stability of the Jorgensen household. First, Lars and Barbie doesn’t seem to like each other much, which could have something to do with Barbie’s roaming eye (and other body parts).
The children are not very fond of Kailani's healthy cooking although Barbie requires her to prepare more nutritional meals to curve her family's appetite for junk food. Still, this is not the extent to Kailani's problems. Things get weird when Geoffrey moves to Hawaii to be with her (even though she’s already told him its over), and a body is found on the Jorgensen’s property.
There are a few things I enjoyed about this book. Because Kailani is a chef, I enjoyed reading about the kinds of meals she would prepare for the family. (Especially when she started to get really creative to get the children to eat healthy.) It gave me a sense of the Hawaiian culture.
I also like how the plot pretty much focuses on this one family. To me that gives the story a TV show kind of feel. Meaning, every time I put my Kindle down I’d think about what I’d read in tomorrow’s episode of the House of the Hanging Jade. Speaking of episodes, there's plenty of drama to go around! Let's just say the Jorgensen's are off the chain.
There’s a lot going on in this house and I kept wondering why Kailani didn’t just quit her job. It becomes so dangerous for her that Lars has installed a new security system. Of all of this, what I love most about this book is the children! Marcus and Justine's presence in the house added the breath of fresh air and light that I needed as a reader in the midst of the family's raging storms
It is in fact the children’s well-being and state of mind that makes this book worthwhile. What’s really going on in the house with the hanging Jade?
"House of the Hanging Jade" by Amy M. Reade kept me turning the pages from beginning to end. The author did a fantastic job of drawing me into the main character's life and I had to find out how things turned out for Kailani. The book has an intriguing plot, full of surprises and suspense, a great cast of characters and a beautiful, exotic setting. A must read by Amy Reade!
House of the Hanging Jade is the latest mystery novel by Amy M. Reade. Kailani Kanaka is a chef that is currently living in Washington, D.C. Kailani is from Hawaii and is not enjoying a D.C. winter. Kailani decides to return home to Kona and her family. Geoffrey Corcoran is the owner of the restaurant where she works and her current boyfriend. They have only been dating for a short while, but Kailani knows he is not the one (too clingy). The Kanaka is happy for their daughter to return home and spread the word that she is looking for a position. Kailani receives a call from Dr. Barbara Merriweather-Jorgensen. Barbie (as she prefers to be called) is looking for a personal chef for her family (husband and two children). Kailani will live on the premises and she is asked to introduce more nutritional foods to the family. Kailani soon finds that there are secrets within the Jorgensen house and Kailani does her best to protect the children. Then Dr. Douglas Fitzgibbons, an associate of Barbie’s turns up dead at the house. The number one suspect is Lars Jorgensen, Barbie’s husband (turns out that Douglas was more than a work associate). Then Kailani’s ex-boyfriend turns up on the Big Island. Geoffrey cannot seem to take no for an answer. How far is Geoffrey willing to go to have Kailani as his girlfriend? Who killed Dr. Fitzgibbons? What happens when someone else turns up dead on the estate?
Overall, I enjoyed reading House of the Hanging Jade. I was immediately drawn into the book. I just wish the murder had been harder to solve (I could have told you who the killer was right after they found the body). There is also the expected romance (I could see it coming but I kept hoping the author would not do it). The book is peppered with native phrases (glossary at the end of the book). There is quite a bit of food talk in the book (she is a chef) and gorgeous descriptions of the scenery. Kailani’s reactions to the Geoffrey are odd. Kailani did not tell him to buzz off or go away (at first). She did not want to hurt his feelings (if a guy is being creepy you need to be firm). I give House of the Hanging Jade 3.75 out of 5 stars. The book had a good flow (no slow parts) that kept me reading. I will definitely read more books by Amy Reade.
I received a complimentary copy of House of the Hanging Jade from NetGalley in exchange for an honest evaluation of the novel.
Kailani, a sous chef in a snowbound Massachusetts decides to end her misery and go back home to the Big Island of Hawai'i. It'll also make it easy to break up with her boss. She's become disenchanted yet is too timid to break up with him outright.
Fast forward a bit and now she's settling in to her new job as a personal chef for a wealthy family up the coast from her own family. The parents are busy. The teenage boy is sulky. The younger teenaged girl is at the crossroads of figuring out how she should be now.
By the time the body is found, we have come to know Kailani as a mildly insecure person who doesn't like to think about conflicts. She's also very eager to please and thinks she can fix everything with food.
The story isn't working. Kailani is the kind of person who ends up being the useless person at a crime scene who doesn't know when it's time to get out of the way. She's the one gets killed next in the standard mystery thriller. How are we supposed to believe that she'll be the one to figure things out when she can't even find her own opinion about things?
There's also a couple of glaring things that bothered me. First one being her cat, Meli. Hawaii has a quarantine for all animals coming into the islands. There is no mention of this and when Kailani moves in within mere days of her arrival, Meli is there with her.
The other one goes way beyond fictional license. In this particular murder, the immediate most likely suspect is the father. Because the dead body is the wife's lover. Yet he is given permission to travel to the mainland on business.
He returns. A few pages later, he leaves again. This time on business to Peru.
I had to stop at that point. It was one thing to keep soldiering through the writing that was suitable for middle grade readers, but it's another to suspend that much disbelief. According to my Kindle, I was at 23%.
Maybe some people can accept that much fictional license but for me it was a "did not finish" yet I'll give it 2 stars because the setting was lovely and I had thought it'd end up being a 3 star very light beach read. Emphasis on the light.
Thank you to the publisher for giving me a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Kensington Books! When you think of Gothic fiction Hawaii is probably not the first setting that comes to mind. House of the Hanging Jade proves that an impressive mansion overlooking the Pacific Ocean can be as creepy as a castle in the middle of the night. Kailani takes on a job as a personal chef at the titular house and she soon discovers that not everything is as it seems. Bodies start piling up and violence spreads in this idyllic venue. Kailani's ex-boyfriend comes back into her life and seems to be stalking her. A sense of dread turns paradise into a nightmare. I found the story addictive and the characters intriguing, even if some of Kailani's reactions to her stalker strained belief (why not just say "go away" clearly from the beginning... not that a stalker will do just that, but spending energy in coming up with excuses not to hurt his feelings is absurd). I was also unconvinced when two of the characters reveal feelings for each other out of the blue - it read more as a plot contrivance than a real emotion. I enjoyed the rest of the twists and turns, even if the descriptions of all the food Kailani cooks made me perpetually hungry.
I received "House of the Hanging Jade" via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
When I first started reading this book I loved it. I love the native language that Amy M. Reade shared through the story and book. The main protagonist; Kailani Kanaka seems to be a strong and independent woman. She worked hard to become a chef. Preparing delightful food for others is a family tradition she carries on.
She leaves Washington, DC after growing more uncomfortable with her boss / restaurateur. A big career change, she heads back to Hawaii and her home place, landing a job as a private chef for a wealthy family.
I love mystery, strong female protagonists, and food.
I was eating this story up. I enjoy each morsel until my heroine Kailani became weak and unethical in one quick turn.
Several streams running through the story shook my confidence in the protagonist. I started to doubt Kailani's point of view.
I do not root for stalkers. I started to wonder about Kailani's story of her boss / boyfriend in Washington DC.
There is violence and suspense, and the writing is good. The three quarters of the book left a bad taste in my mouth, and I am sad that it turned out the way it did.
Huge thanks to Amy M. Reade, Kensington Books, Lyrical Underground and NetGalley for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really, really want to go to Hawaii now! The culture, the people, the food, the gorgeous views and weather and did I mention the food?!
The characters are fun and well described although some seem a little flat to me. The mystery wasn't the main story, the stalking was and both were wrapped up alright but I thought there should've been more about the stalking, previous behaviour etc. It ended too nicely, too cleanly for me but I did enjoy the story.
I really wanted to love this book because 1) it is set in Hawaii (sigh) and 2) it is a book with lots of descriptions for a foodie. But, there was something that I couldn't put my finger on that I didn't like about it until I read other reviews. Writing is very choppy. Plot is ok but nothing I would recommend to others. I hated the pairing at the end of the book.
Real characters, unreal situations. Enjoyed food descriptions. Beautiful settings. Sick villain. Would like to read more. Loved who finally got together.
