In a flash of agony, Adrea knew her Aunt Neadra was dead. Waking in hospital was strange enough, but having her colouring changed to that of her dead relative was a little hard to take. Adrea called the authorities to let them know her aunt had been murdered and made the three-hour trip to get to her aunt’s home. Shockingly, things get out of control from there. She is arrested, questioned and released back to Ritual Space, where she has to seal the breach in the wards with her own blood. Officer Hyl Luning is assigned to watch her, but he had better be quick, because she has an agenda that even she isn’t sure of.
I am a big fan of Viola Grace. I read most everything she writes. It is a bit like a warm cup of tea for me with a drop of honey.
However, I like this writer when I could adore her. I don't mind the length as some do. I respect her need to make a good living and am happy she does so.
There are recurring annoyances in the books that I wish weren't there though.
The heroes need more backstory and development. The romances need more couple time and falling in love. There is a good deal of falling in like.
These are issue is this book.
The heroine is grand, as usual. The world building good. There is an exploration of grief and family. And there are bunnies. Yes!
The heroine of this story is the great niece of a friend of Benny's family. She is a lovely person who lives several hours away when suddenly she experiences severe pain and wakes in the hospital with her parents hovering. It turns out they know what happened, and aren't happy that she was the beneficiary.
As she goes to investigate, she finds that the Mage Guild is rather rule and hide bound and mostly unwilling to pay attention to important realities. As she is getting used to her new situation and life, she realizes how little she knows. Also, there is an unusual man who is assigned to guard her. He seems more interested in her than is warranted by his job. Fortunately, she finds him attractive, and he sees her as she really is, rather than with the limiting expectations of the Mage Guild police.
Adrea does get to meet Benny and the guys. She also meets another crew who seem fun and interesting. Then she has to solve a murder, which she does, though it is a bit sad. I had figured out who done it pretty early in the story, so there was little suspense.
While Grace's books are not deep character studies, I found this one to be less so than others. That was particularly the case with the romantic element. I didn't have an issue with the couple, it just seemed like we skipped over some aspects of their getting together. I am glad that there will be more books in this world, and that we'll get o spend more time with some of the supporting characters from the first few books.
Loved the story. The storyline was captivating, I couldn't put it down. The characters were engaging and it was great to see characters from the first books mingling with Ritual Space. Need to read the next story.
Yet another amazing book in this series. Full of twists and turns. Very unpredictable and towards the end a total tearjerker. Can't wait to read the next book in this series
There was no romantic heat in this story and the relationship was bland. The concept and plot were imaginative but it didn't flow smoothly. Something was missing and it seemed like another story to the Nexus series as opposed to a more unique world. Sorry, didn't work for me. Though I read a lot of fantasy, I prefer Scfi. (As a side note, I hope VG has a Scfi replacement for Terran Times which is my favorite series. Everyone seems to be writing fantasy but very few have the talent to create Scfi worlds like VG has done with Terran Times.) I hope the next book in the Obscure Magic series is better, loved the previous ones.
I really enjoy Viola Grace's stuff (and her AKA Zenina Masters). It is an automatic buy when I see a new one out. Some are less beloved than others but, with over 400 out, that should not be surprising. However, some 'separated by a common language' problems. Ms. Grace uses 'treatise' when a US person would use 'treaty'. She also uses 'ratify' to mean (for me) rectify or solve. There are some other typo style problems that I overlook for the fun of her stories. I am checking Amazon daily for her new stories and have reread all of her old ones several times. That's how addicted I am. With fondest regards to one of my favorites. mike
In this book we learn more about the area called ritual space, how it was formed and why and the importance of it to the supernatural community. This is not a typical love story however we do see Benny and her men as well as her parents and meet some very interesting characters that I hope we see in future books in this series. This Canadian author did not disappoint and I love the way her mind constantly amazes me. Another great read and can't wait for the next book.
I loved RITUAL SPACE, it was totally unlike any other book I've ever read. But had me on the edge of my seat until I from the Very start. Not many stories can do that.. And it held me there until I finished it three hours Later. Ohh my.!!! I can't Wait until the next book.Hopefully it will last longer !!
And yet again, another great story from Viola Grace! A sad way for Adrea to inherit her powers from her aunt but I thought she adapted very well and to find a love interest/ bodyguard even lovelier. Can't wait for the next installment.
