71 books2 followersReverend George Fyler Townsend (1814 - 1900) was the translator of the standard English edition of Aesop's Fables.
Although there are more modern collections and translations, Townsend's volume of 350 fables introduced the practice of stating a succinct moral at the conclusion of each story, and continues to be influential. Several editions were published in his lifetime, and others since.
He also published numerous adaptations and versions of common children's stories, including Arabian Nights.

Most of the stories were quite entertaining, especially the tales of Sindbad the Sailor. A couple of the stories in the middle dragged a bit, but overall this reminded me of a variant on the traditional Western fairy tales, albeit usually with less magic/fantasy elements. Definitely worth checking out for anyone who is a fan of the Sindbad, Ali Baba, or similar genre stories.

3 months and I'm 25% into this. I'm reading this on the free kindle version. So far it's muchhh better than the fancy Barnes and Nobles print edition that's translated by Sir RIchard F. Burton. Apparently though, it's almost impossible to not get an abridged version of 1001 Nights in English?
