Mila was living a quiet life. Too old to join the Volunteer program, she was resigned to her position in the middle of nowhere.
When a recruiter comes to her and orders her to join she says no. When he explains that due to her genetic heritage she has no choice, she reluctantly enters a pact to gain an education in return for her genes.
As her assigned Familiar isn’t interested in her, Mila is left on an alien world looking for someone to take on her training. Who could possibly want to take her on, body, mind and soul?
I enjoyed this book as the heroine was perceptive and drawn to the opportunity to learn. I also liked how she challenged the mold in more than one way, especially through her Familiar switch.
As others have mentioned, the author has lost her interest in this series and it shows. She's not having fun, it's a job now, and life issues are draining her. This is all showing in her work.
Sadly for me I have not lost interest in reading stories in this universe. I have accepted that these last books are not as cheerfully crafted as the earlier ones. She's got it down to a formula and this one gets a C+ as it broke the formula a little but still just barely hit all the steps.
Formula: Woman with interesting ability or reason for aliens to want her. Check. Woman undergoes dramatic transformation. Check Woman immediately meets man who will be her true love. Half check -- he was actually the second available guy she was "paired"with. With next to zero romance building, woman and man are in love. Check Happily ever after. Check.
I'll keep reading to the bitter end. I hope she rediscovers her writing passion and originality in her new series.
I have read all of her books. Except for the reindeer books . I liked the fact that the heroine was older and she deserves someone special, how does one of the elders sound..This book took longer because it was more in depth than some of her other books but it was enjoyable seeing a couples romance begin
Giving us a glimpse of next generation at the end was a cool touch at the end. I look forward to reading it in the future. Another great book. Can't wait for the next installment of this series.
