It was a tragedy for the entire town: beloved high school principal Edith Potts collapsed and quickly died. For nurse Jill Cooper, it was a crushing loss--and the first of many shocks. Two former sweethearts have suddenly returned to town, reawakening all her youthful traumas, secrets and dreams. Then another death occurs. It appears accidental, but is it? Is everything a coincidence? Or could it all possibly be connected to another murder, three decades ago?
Before it's over, Jill will have to look hard at her troubled history, question her sanity, her faith... and face the deepest secrets in her heart.

Mel’s eyes bugged out like he’d just met a serial killer.
“Only temporarily, of course. I’m a writer, and I need one of my characters to be incapacitated.”
Mel regained his color, grinned, and gave me the needed information in graphic detail…I was only able to eat half a slice of pizza.
It was my introduction into the world of emergency medicine. It was Mel’s into fiction. We were both fascinated. A year and a half later we were married.
Thus began the partnership known as Hannah Alexander.*

Nice to find a Christian based series, reflecting their struggles and growth.
This is the seventh mystery in the Hideaway series, which refers to a small town in southwest Missouri populated by Jill Cooper and her sister, Noelle, the Christian psychic. The tragedy involves the sudden death of beloved Hideaway High School principal Edith Potts during a routine visit to the spa. Heart troubles are blamed for Edith's death, but the arrival of people from Jill's past including former town mayor Austin Barlow and Dr. Rex Fairfield, her former fiance, who is aiding Dr. Cheyenne Gideon at the clinic. Another death occurs and while it's chalked up to coincidence, there is the matter of an unsolved murder years ago, in which a teenage prank turned deadly.
Aiding Jill in solving the mystery around Edith's death are school friends, Sherry and Doris, who help her go through boxes of things that Edith left to her. This is one of the book's best scenes. However, in one instance, a box of old school records is unclaimed and brought to Jill simply because she used to be the school nurse. Privacy laws come to mind here; those records should have been destroyed and not handed to someone else simply because they worked at the school.
In this novel, the Christian message is much more in-your-face than in other series, which sometimes detracts from the mystery itself. However, the characters are very likable, including the stubborn Jill as well as the teenage Fawn, who left a life of prostitution in Las Vegas to flee to Hideaway and her friend/possible romantic interest Blaze, who works at a boy's ranch north of Hideaway. The authors do a good job of describing Missouri, the Ozarks, and Table Rock Lake. It makes me almost want to visit. I gave it three stars for the characters (like Jill) who are fun to read about, but I've definitely read better mysteries.
This novel was okay, and I rounded this up from 2.5 stars to a like. I gave 3 stars to the first book in this series and didn't read all of them, which didn't affect how I rated this one. I don't mind the number of characters, but I just wasn't riveted by this.
When Edith Potts' death is ruled an accident, Nurse Jill Cooper isn't convinced because her sister's "intuition" (what revelation is called in this book, and later it's mentioned it comes from God) says it's murder and her sister's institution has never been wrong. There are plenty of things going on as she investigates. Two old beaus, one her former fiancé, come to town, but to be fair, one of them was in the first book and is from there. There is a logical explanation for the other one as well. A few other people from the first book are important in this one (Jill wasn't there yet) plus some from books I haven't read came in.
The complex things don't bother me, but I wasn't blown away by the writing or the story and felt it could have been written and/or edited to make it tighter and read better.
When Edith, the school principal suddenly died there was much grief in the small town, but none were hurt more than Jill Cooper. Edith had been a second Mother to Jill when she lost her own Mother, and she was a very special friend. Things really started happening when Rex and Austin returned about this time, both being boyfriend and fiance if Jill. Jill had the feeling that Edith's death was not a heart attack and she asked they do an autopsy. No one really paid any attention to her. Then there was another death and it caught Red's attention. All this really got Jill's attention when she received some boxes Edith had left to her. Some of these boxes help student records from many years back. Jill started thinking and working to prove Edith had really been killed and her killing was linked to a mysterious death of a boy Jill went to school with. Read this book, it will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I definitely picked up a book that was in the middle of a series. But I had no idea I did until I had started reading it. Nowhere on the cover or anything did it indicate it was part of a series...much less book 7.\n\nIt was an okay book. I didn't have the mystery totally figured out until the end. It probably would have been a much better book had I read the previous 6. It kept referring back to past things and events that I had no idea about. So that made it less enjoyable than it could have been.
With each book in this series, I fall more and more in love with Hideaway. This story had a theme of second chances and I enjoyed seeing an old character return and have a chance of redemption. Jill and Rex were very relatable and I loved how Fawn shared so much of the story. Love the series, but I highly recommend reading all the books in order, as to understand all the characters better.
