Eternal Mates #11

Haunted by the King of Death

Rate this book
A ruthless vampire warrior, Grave Van der Garde rules the mercenary Preux Chevaliers with an iron fist, determined to retain his hard-won position as one of the most powerful men in Hell and his reputation as the heartless King of Death. But beneath the cold façade beats the heart of a vampire torn between love and hate, ripped in two directions by a single ethereally beautiful female—his fated phantom mate.

Driven by her phantom instincts, Isla used a spell to make her solid in order to deceive the vampire who killed her sister’s demon mate and have revenge on him, condemning him with a single kiss to become a phantom too. But her plan took an unexpected turn when she fell in love with him, and with her new life, and the night she betrayed him shattered both of their hearts. Now, he lives to make her suffer through their connection, one that is fading with them as they begin to slip into the phantom world, and she must face the monster she created if she is to save herself and the vampire she still loves.

With a demon from Grave’s past determined to destroy him and everything he holds dear, and the clock ticking down to their inevitable doom, can he and Isla overcome their past and their pride to work together to secure the future they both desire deep in their hearts? Or will death finally catch up with the vampire king and his phantom mate?

Well book eleven and I'm still absolutely amazed at this authors imaginative and indeed original ideas. Yes I've always been a fan of her world building but with this story quite frankly she has outdone herself because not only do we get a rough , tough hero who is matched by a heroine who is so in control of her formidable powers it's almost unreal but old favourites appear. If you have read the Vampire Erotic Theatre series then you are in for a treat but to say exactly why might spoil the fun although I just will add that these vampires truly have a savage nature that works out so well here.
So Grave, yes he is one very angry vampire but with good reason and from the start as a reader it's kind of hard not to empathise with him but you know there's always two sides to every story. The fact that Isla followed her phantom instincts in seeking revenge has left the couple facing huge repercussions and it's time for Isla to come clean if there's ever going to be a chance at saving either of them. Unfortunately in the realms revenge and violence seem to be inevitable and it turns out that Grave has an enemy who is powerful, cunning and not above hurting innocents . As the couple face their nemesis there's still the tricky problem of actually surviving and truth be told things are looking well, very grave indeed!
I liked seeing the dynamics of this unusual pairing. As previously mentioned from the first page Grave had my sympathy but I wasn't sure just how the author could make him likeable as he is after all a pretty bad ass mercenary. Isla was much easier to like because we instantly saw her softer more loyal side but boy is their relationship all kinds of screwed up! Mated for one hundred years yet separate , in love and did I mention Grave hates Isla? Yes the author really had her work cut out giving this couple a happy ending. Add in the trauma that occurs , not to mention fight scenes that are vividly described and this was another jaw dropping story. I loved the cameos that became integral to the story and of course the romance that has enough steam to start an engine ! Another entertaining book and I look forward to the next Eternal Mates story but please can we have Frey soon as he's so sad and I'm sure readers would love to give him some good loving!

Up until this point, Felicity Heaton’s ETERNAL MATES series has been all about her characters “finding” their one-true-pairing, but HAUNTED BY THE KING OF DEATH approached that goal a bit differently by featuring an already bonded couple that wants absolutely nothing to do with each other. Fate of course has other plans, and Grave & Isla are forced to work together or face deadly consequences.

Having not read the six VAMPIRE EROTIC THEATRE volumes, I wasn’t able to fully appreciate the cameo appearances however, it took me very little time to recognize the merits of the Vampirerotique walk-ons, and in doing so I added another stack of this author’s titles to my TBR pile. One secondary in particular caught my attention, and after researching his book it became apparent that I have my work cut out for me because his is the last VET installment. Such hardship! ;)

Grave Van der Garde is probably my second favourite protagonist after Bleu, and I loathe owning up to this, but I actually enjoyed his story more than POSSESSED BY A DARK PRINCE. Heroes with a chip on their shoulder make my girlie bits hum, and Heaton outdid herself with her latest vampire lead. As the head of Hell’s most renowned mercenary guild, and sporting the ultimate scorned lover tale, Grave is the undisputed badass of the EM world (and my heart).

Many authors use misunderstandings as a crutch to create drama, and in this duo’s case a whopper of a mix-up occurred, yet Grave & Isla’s situation is constructed in such a way that not only is it the driving force behind the plot line, but with over a century of history, it’s completely plausible. Their issues could not have been resolved by a simple conversation, so I never felt frustrated by communication hurdles nor the urge to smack them for ignoring the obvious.

Good things come to those who wait, even if you’re HAUNTED BY THE KING OF DEATH.

Unlike the previous couples in this series Isla and Grave are already mated but a series of misunderstandings and betrayals have turned them into bitter enemies and neither of them has any intention of forgiving the other. They have spent the last 100 years apart and that time has just allowed their resentment and anger to grow so it's fair to say that this couple have major issues to deal with. Unfortunately for them they can't avoid each other forever, there has been a nasty side effect to a spell that Isla placed on Grave and now if they don't work together to fix things it'll end up killing them both.

It's not easy to work with someone you can't trust, especially when that person is someone you loved who went on to betray you in the worst possible way. Grave has every reason to hate Isla and it was easy to see his point of view but at the same time Isla had very good reasons for doing what she did and she has regretted her actions for a long time now. I have to admit I found it a little frustrating that Isla was able to understand why Grave was so twisted up about their relationship one minute but then the next she expected him to put it all behind him like it was nothing and was angry when he didn't trust her. I wanted her to be a bit more apologetic for what had happened between them but that really was a minor irritation when I enjoyed so much more about the story.

One of the things I loved the most was the chance to catch up with some familiar faces from the Vampire Erotic Theatre series. I don't want to say too much about it but fans of the previous series will love the surprises in store for them. Haunted by the King of Death also introduces some great new characters and I really want stories about Isla's brother-in-law and Grave's brothers in the future. The story is full of action, has a great romance and has started to bring back old characters as well as new ones which is a trend I'm really hoping continues in the future.

Wow! Heartbreaking! Emotional!

Ms. Heaton never has a dull moment when it comes to her books and this one is no exception. Haunted by the King of Death will pull at your heartstrings and take you on an emotional journey.

Previously we have seen the “finding of mates”, but Haunted by the King of Death brings us a new element. Here we have a couple that is already mated, but it’s not the Happily Ever After.

I was taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride and I suggest having tissues handy. Their were several moments that I ended up with tears in my eyes. OMG, the emotions Gaven goes through will pull at your heart. Isla, WOW, what happens with her I didn’t see coming. Very sad. Gaven and Isla where not expecting to care so much about each other and the reasons for the separation, lets say I wasn’t happy about that situation, but they needed something to force them back together and confront the past. My god they have a lot of issues to work out; before they truly can find what they need in each other.

The action/battle scenes are as vivid as always. FHeaton knows how to pull an audience in.

I loved meeting Gaven’s family. I did’t realize who he was related too. Fans who have read the Vampire Erotic Theatre series will love the cameos from all those wonderful characters. I did! If you haven’t read the Vampire Erotic Theatre, no worries.

I will say I do miss the overall plot/theme which the series started out with. In the first three we have Archangel an organization in the human realm that captures, kills, and studies all the different supernaturals. Their was a lot of promise around that sinister organization. I never really did find out if they where good, bad, in-between, or if it was just certain people in the organization. Now the only consistent things are the realms.

I’m still very much in love with this series and their is always something new in each book that comes out. I highly recommend the Eternal Mates series and any of Ms. Heaton’s books.

It is quite a feat to carry a series to 11 books and keep it entertaining and engaging. Heaton has certainly accomplished that feat. Not only was Haunted by the King of Death entertaining but she managed to keep me captivated with Grave and Isla's story...so captivated I didn't miss my favorite characters from previous installments. That is something I didn't think possible!

Grave has always intrigued me. He's a vampire for one thing. But he's also an enigma. I've been eager for his story for awhile...and what a story! I enjoyed getting better acquainted with him, learning his story and finding that he's not simply a cold-hearted mercenary. In Isla, I learned about phantoms in this world - their nature and particular makeup. I warmed immediately to her and understood her earlier actions as well as felt for she's suffered because of those actions.

Their story - finding their way back to one another via a threat to them both as well as their families - was... well, I was enraptured. There was so much going on and Heaton wove in her masterfully choreographed fight scenes around solving a problem and protecting family and each other. I found it all utterly exciting!

Eternal Mates is one of my favorite series as Heaton keeps me engaged and entertained. I can't wait for the next in this series and, thanks to some of the characters I met here, I'm thinking I need to immerse myself in her Vampirerotique series as well. :D

Another great & FAN-FRICKING-TASTIC addition to the "Eternal Mates" series

I'm amazed at Heatons' imaginative and original ideas when it comes to her stories. She also manages to entwine characters of her from another series "Vampire Erotic Theatre" which I think I may have to start reading to get to know more of the characters in them.

Grave Van der Garde - Ruthless Vampire and head of the mercenary -Preux Chevaliers, this van is the definition of a wild, animalisitc, blood-lusted vampire that just so happens to have secretly mated with a phantom...yep, you heard me, Phantom as in Ghost-like, incorporeal.

Isla is the beautiful Phantom that has mated with the damned Vampire......was it a mutual mating...hell no

Driven by her nature Isla just wants revenge...revenge for her family, revenge for her and nothing will stop her from getting what she wants, by any means necessary.

Unfortunately in the realms they reside in revenge and violence seem to be inevitable and a new enemy who is powerful, cunning and not above hurting innocents takes residence within to cause as much pain and torture as they can.

As the couple face their nemesis there's still the tricky problem of surviving and truth be told things aren't looking to be in their favour.

Another entertaining book and I look forward to the next Eternal Mates story.

Vampire Grave Van der Garde has a reputation in Hell as the King of Death. He is in charge of a ruthless mercenary army. He has used his inherited blood lust gene to make him even more dangerous in battle. Unfortunately he is also suffering because a hundred years ago a female bonded with him but then left him. The side effects have been painful and annoying but now a much more serious one is starting. He is disappearing .
Isla is a phantom. She used a spell to trick the vampire who killed her sister's mate. Now she must find the cure for her actions before it kills them both.
This story has it all, laughter, tears, non stop action and Hot sexy scenes. It will pull you in on the first page and not let you escape. Our hero tries very hard to be an unfeeling monster, but in truth he just wants to be loved. That doesn't stop him from being a particularly vicious killer.
Our heroine has a tendency to act first and think later. Not a good idea. She is also a powerful warrior in her own right. Her most powerful weapon is the Kiss of Death.
Although this is part of a series it can easily read on it's own. It does allow you to meet some other family members who have found their mates in previous books. I have read nearly all of the series and it just gets better each time. Bring on the next one please.

Isla and Grave have a few issues they need to work out. More than a few, actually. There's the whole betrayal and doom thing. And the fact that they're both so caught up in what the other did that they don't have much time for talking amidst all the brooding and scowling. Oh, and then there's the demon determined to make both their lives a living hell because of what Grave did to him in the past.

BAGGAGE, THY NAME IS ISLA AND GRAVE!

All kidding aside, this is another kick-ass entry into the Eternal Mates series. Grave and Isla have their instincts and heartache working against them. Plus, the curse Isla placed on Grave is coming back to haunt her. Heh. The phantom is being haunted. NICE!

We got to head into Vampirerotique for a visit with some familiar faces and see how those characters are faring since their books (it feels like such a long time since we spent time with Snow and Antoine and all the others!). On top of the family reunion (of a sorts), we got some serious battling and plenty of blood spilled.

Because the romance between a phantom and a vampire wouldn't be complete without some bloodshed, amirite?!?!

REVIEW
I have enjoyed every book thus far in this series and wow what a story this one is.
Best one yet hands down.
We met this couple in a previous book but now they get their own. Isla did something she knew would eventually have dire consequences and now she has lost so much because of it. Grave is one mean vampire but he is now also so much more although he does not want it.
A Demon Prince seeking vengeance also is stalking him. Now Grave and his entire family what is left of them are all in danger add to that his mate whom he does not want.
Can this couple fight together or will they fade with everyone else?

Loved this book. It is well written, we get tons of action, and a whole lot of hot.

Another enchanting story that took me on a rollercoaster of emotions till the very end. I wish I had discovered this series sooner. It's absolutely amazing! I love the different characters and the struggles that are presented in each book for them to overcome. The journey that each character takes is unique and entertaining.
This book had it all for me the dark raw emotions, the nonstop action and the breathtaking romance. I can't wait to read more books in this series!

As to be expected, Ms. Heaton has done it again with Haunted by the King of Death. It’s never a dull moment when it comes to her books and in her latest entry, you have a ruthless vampire warrior and a phantom getting a second chance at love if their pasts don’t get to them first.

Oh Isla, what have you done! Getting revenge on the vampire who killed your sister’s mate seems to have backfired on you. You fell in love with him yet you made him a Phantom. Grave, you I give permission to be pissed at her for doing that. Okay, so the reason why is justifiable but still, that was messed up. Now don’t think Grave is an innocent because as mercenary, he has done some not so nice things for money. Expect his past to come back and haunt him – do not forget the tissues! Actually, both of them are paying the price for past actions. Now they are in a race to not only to come up with a solution before they both fade away but also to stop the Demon Prince before he stops them. Expect to read lots of heart pounding action, mixed with gut wrench sorrow, and steamy hot reunions before they finally get their HEA.

I may very well be in the minority here but I think I am pretty much done with reading the Eternal Mates series. There’s eleven books now and who knows how many more there will be but I won’t be reading them. In my series, I have to have some kind of carry-over, running theme, familiarity, something that ties all the books together. In the beginning, there was Archangel and there was so much promise around that sinister organization nary a word about it now. There’s hardly any previous characters so don’t go looking for them. I know mates struggling, finding each other and mating for life is the overall theme but I really need to have familiar faces. At this point, the only consistent things are the realms. I still do highly recommend this series and all of Ms. Felicity Heaton’s books. It’s just no longer enough for me so I’m saying good-bye to this series.

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine.

I've been eagerly awaiting this book. I've loved the books so far in this series and couldn't wait for this one. I wasn't disappointed and super enjoyed this.

This story follows Grave (Lord Van Der Garde), powerful vampire, cousin to Snow and Antoine from the V.E.T. series, and all around pretty dark character, and his destined mate, the phantom Isla. They have a pretty complicated past and they are both now suffering the consequences.

I loved reading their story and finding out more about them and what shaped them into who they were. They were both pretty complex characters, suffering from their own demons and flaws, but i could relate to them. I was invested with their story from the start. It was well written and the plot flowed well.

This book has plenty of action and romance with some twists too. I really enjoyed catching up with the characters from the V.E.T. series as they played a fairly big part in this.

You could read this as a standalone but the back story from the previous books adds an extra dimension that I feel shouldn't be really missed.

I enjoyed this a lot. I finished reading in one sitting. I like how this series is still full of fresh ideas and characters and has scope for much more ahead. Some series can get a little tired and repetitive but that is not the case here.

All in a great read that I would definitely recommend. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

This is the eleventh book in the Eternal Mates series. I loved it!

Isla is a likable character. She was first introduced to the reader in the ninth book, Possessed by a Dark Warrior as Queen Melia's advisor though she is her sister. She also happens to be a phantom who has taken a solid form in order to avenge the death of her sister's husband. However, it doesn't exactly go to plan and she ended up falling for Grave. After breaking her own heart she had her revenge, but things are not that easy and a century later, she finds that they are both fading. Now she needs to convince the vampire to help her stop it.

Grave Van der Garde is a strong alpha type character. I really liked him. He is a warrior and leader of the Preux Chevaliers, a mercenary group of vampires living in Hell who fight for the highest bidder. He fell in love with Isla but now he feels betrayal and hate towards her after she left him a century before. Unfortunately, he cannot forget her due to their bond. However, when danger threatens his family he reluctantly agrees to help Isla.

I absolutely love the Eternal Mates world. I started to read this book and I was quickly pulled in. It kept me riveted from beginning to end.

The story is told through the eyes of Grave and Isla, which gives the reader a chance to see and feel as they do. We also get to meet a few old faces from the Vampirerotique series, since Grave is a cousin to Snow (yum!) and Antoine. It was nice to see the whole lot of them again at the theatre to be honest. We are also introduced to Grave's brothers, Night and Bastian. As they only have cameo roles for the most part, I wonder if they will have their story told one day?

The heat between the main characters blazed white hot. There is a fine line between love and hate after all. Their chemistry is explosive and explicit. I must admit that I was surprised at Grave's reaction during one scene when he and Isla met the phantom mage, even though I could understand it. Nevertheless, I am glad he managed to see sense in the end.

I love the way the story swept me up and spit me out on a roller coaster ride of emotion. Hell is a dangerous place, and the characters living within it have a strength within them that helps them to survive. However, they also have flaws and fears, which makes them lifelike and relatable.

Felicity Heaton has written another fast paced, sexy paranormal romance that I thoroughly enjoyed! I love her fast paced writing style, which flows effortlessly from scene to scene. She is on top of my favourite author's list.

I do not recommend this book to younger readers due to the extremely HOT and explicit sexual scenes. However, I highly recommend this book (and series) if you love sexy paranormal romances full of vampires, elves, werewolves, cat shifters, succubi, incubi, angels, dragons, demons and demonesses. - Lynn Worton

I have been a fan of this awesome and engaging series from the start. I have enjoyed all the books thus far and this installment was no different. This is the eleventh book in the series, and it’s my belief that it has more to offer. There are other characters who I believe are clamouring to have their story told. If I were to choose which of the books were my favourite, I would have to say without a doubt that Haunted by the King of Death is my number one choice.

This installment took a different turn from the previous books.  From the outset, the series focused on the main characters finding their eternal mate. However, in this story, the main characters already knew that they were destined for each other. They had a history which resulted in them not wanting anything to do with each other in the present. However, unfortunate circumstances will re-unite them and they will find themselves in a battle for their lives against a common enemy.

One of my favourite things about this series is the unusual pairings of the main characters. Can you imagine a vampire mating with a phantom? Probably not, however, Ms. Heaton brought the concept across so convincingly that they ended up being my favourite couple of the series.

Isla and Grave are complex and intriguing characters. I was immediately drawn into their world. At first, Grave came off as a cold-hearted vampire. However, as the story progressed it was evident that this was not the case. He had a certain persona to maintain as a mercenary/assassin for hire. He could not allow his enemies to know that there was a softer side to him.  Isla was no walkover. She proved to be a formidable opponent and a loyal friend, sister, and mate.  The events of their past made for an interesting read and it helped me to appreciate them more.

Like all the previous books, Haunted by the King of Death is filled with action and lots of steamy intimate moments.  Once again Ms. Heaton has proven why she is my number one favourite when it comes to paranormal romance.  This is an addictive story that demonstrates that true love transcends time and space.  Genuine love does not fade with time. When you truly love someone, no matter the time apart or the distance from each other your feelings will not change.

This is such a great addition to the series. I can’t wait to see what next Ms. Heaton has in store for her fans.

I love this series..... Haunted by the King of Death is another great read (and what do you know.... after not being a fan of Grave I adored him as our hero - this was FH's writing and story-telling at its best!!!!)

We've met the dark, sullen vampire hero of this book previously in the series and while we knew he hated females we really had no idea of exactly why... Enter Isla, a phantom who is the mate of the King of Death except in this case, instead of being delighted that they are mated, neither party is happy and as the story unfolds, we find out exactly why this is the case.

This story was really well put together and pulled in characters from the Eternal Mates series as well as some of our favourites from the VET series.... Gods, I was over the moon when Grave turned up in London - I'll leave it to your imagination to ponder who he visited!! ;)

There was a lot of heartache and soul searching in this book by both leads. Even though they really didn't want anything to do with each other there was still a huge pull and they had to work together to save their lives.

We met up with a foe of Graves who really has it in for him (mind you, given his chosen profession and his attitude, I had kinda expected to meet more who hated him!!) we also had to watch Isla deal with a real creep of a character - gods, I hate his kind (you'll see what I mean when reading!) As ever, there was a lot of action, the story was full of suspense and some really bloody battles.
At points I was having trouble seeing a way forward for the couple and wasn't sure how Felicity was going to leave them... but as ever, she gave us an enthralling, exciting and entertaining read and another great addition to this fantastic series!

A 5* read for me!!!

What an amazing concept.... a phantom! I loved Isla and her sister's phantom abilities. It is a welcomed changed to the traditional paranormal types.

Isla makes a mistake - one she can't take back and I felt all her pain while desperately wanting her to find peace with herself and where her life was going. The author does an amazing job of infusing the reader with her pain as if it were their own.

Anger so much anger, the reader will be able to feel it rolling off Grave and it has the effect of added tension in this story keeping it from being just another paranormal. Grave's character is complex and the reader will be given glimpses to what made him the vampire he is today.

This story deals with revenge on both Isla and Grave's part and how it causes a chain of events that causes the loss of loved ones and opens up the dialog "Is revenge ever worth it?". Action packed and full of exciting antagonistic interaction between Isla and Grave this book will keep the reader spellbound till the last page. There are parts in this story that brought tears to my eyes and my heart hurt for Grave and Isla.

This story has an ending that will certainly have the reader attention. I give this 5 AMAZING STARS and want everyone one to read it!

Another installment in F Heatons Eternal Mates series - happy days.

This book is all about Grave, he has appeared in other books as the slightly grumpy vampire. Grave lives to fight, he has no other life since he was hurt by a woman, Isla.

Isla is a phantom, she should have no permanent form other than if she chooses to mate with someone a who is solid. Isla was solid but of late she's losing her form, that wouldn't be a problem but it appears she's in more danger than she first thought.

Grave and Isla make a great mating in my opinion, there story is full of drama with warm moments and not forgetting sexy scenes that heat up the book perfectly. We have a wait in them getting together physically, but there dreams/visions are very hot too.

I really liked Isla's story, it is no sunshine story, in fact it is quite sad - luckily she has a hot vamp on her side.

Grave, what's not to like his a dark and dangerous vampire, on the moody side but he has a warm heart and a yearning for his family, Isla didn't have a chance really - I think that's why she kept away!

If you love a happy ever after with action and some angst you will love this series.

Felicity's stories honestly blow my breath away. Her imagination and bringing these mystical creatures to life brings me just happiness. I am a huge pnr nerd and I have read Felicity's novels when she released her first novel in the Eternal Mates series. The storylines she comes up with are pure genius!

So in Haunted by the King Of Death we have Grave who is the leader of the Preux Chevaliers and did I mention a ruthless vampire! He ends up meeting a young women named Isla and falls madly in love. But the feelings aren't mutual, well yet anyway.

You see Isla has a plan, a revenge plot on who murdered her family. She wont stop until the job is done!

But just when she thinks she will finally go through with her revenge, she finds she needs help by the one person she can't stand. Non other than her mate Grave.

New enemies arise, feelings that neither want to acknowledge come into play at the worst possible time.

The question though is that will this mating between Vampire and Phantom end on a happy ending or will it die in flames?

Read to find out!

From the first book in this series to the now book eleven, Felicity Heaton shares her wonderful talent in story writing. Hunted by the King of Death no one has the control as the sexy no-nonsense Grave and for him it was all about the coin he gets for his services. He not only oozed sexiness but this darkness that stayed just near the surface.

Revenge they say is best-served cold, Isla knows all about love she’s seen it up close and she knows all about the pain of losing love. She plans her sweet revenge and through a kiss a fate unfolds. What’s the single most thing important to her? Is her family.

Now both male and female will have to get it together and fight the danger coming at them.

What a great adventure! Isla and Grave are great additions to the couples of Eternal Mates. I enjoyed both of their personalities. Their passion, the love and even their stubbornness. I love Snow and now will have to go back and read his book. A full-length novel that will keep you entertained and turning the pages come walk with us and enjoy the magic world the writer creates for us.

I didn’t like this as much as others in the series, BUT I did really enjoy it, and I especially enjoyed some new species.

This book had lots of drama, but there was also a bit of anguish, humour and I think it really worked. It was nice to see characters from other series (even when I only read one book in the series but I still knew who the main people were) and it was nice hat you didn’t really need to have read those books for this to all make sense.

I think the Demon Prince stuff was a little.. too much? Only because there was another bad guy and I would have preferred one or the other, but the battles were pretty cool and the little humour at the end was a great pick me up from such a full on scene.

I loved little pieces of this. Him seeing the sun, seeing someone become a different species (and I actually love phantoms so double win) and accept it so willingly and lastly how he’s always loved her really got me. Anyway, it was just a really nice read, I want more about these succubus people even if it’s just someone in their family etc because I need that in my life lol

Story continues with Grave & Isla

Part of their story was told in the last book, Possessed by a Dark Warrior aka Bleu’s book. But this where the meat of their story rests and finishes as these two resolve their ancient history. So much emotion but in a way confusion because Isla doesn’t state why she sought vengeance on Grave and she leaves Grave with anger, bitterness and heartache. Lots of anger. She has sentenced him to be a phantom only the real truth doesn’t hit her when they both start to fade. A phantom’s way of dying. All of these unexplained circumstances come to light as these two team up to fix their issues. Personally I found Isla a punk axx b*tch who was immature and adolescent in her thinking and behavior but the varied personality helps in character types. She does have a growing pain and I did like seeing this change. But that’s my personal thought. I don’t have to like the character to enjoy their story. It was long in some places but that too understandable for foundation. 4.5 stars

Romance:3.5
Steaminess:3.5
Action/suspense:3.5
Overall:4

I enjoyed it!

The world building in this book was great. I love paranormal romances but never have a I read a book that blended so many different species together so well. The writing was also very descriptive which I like. The romance was a little slow between Grave and Isla. And I would have liked it a little darker. I think their love story unfolded a little too easy. But it was interesting in the end.

The action plot line was exciting although I had no previous knowledge of the other characters on account of the fact, I haven't read the previous books. But the author dos an okay job in explaining them so I got the generally gist of things. The book was steamy but not as much as I'd have liked.

Overall, a really interesting book. The romance was a little slow but the world building kept me hook to it to the very end.

I usually really like these books but honestly I felt like this relationship was rushed. Im sure this is an unpopular opinion but it was waaay too easy to forgive and forget. Maybe if there was a chapter that showed their interaction back when they met and how they had acted, i would have liked it more. Also, Grave is a badass character and flawed, yet somehow in this book he is honorable and understanding and able to change immediately.... He was portrayed as a love sick puppy with a little bit of pride at the start. Additionally, I found it odd that the main heroine initially wanted to kill Grave because he killed her brother in-law, but then the villain of this book wants to kill those related to the ones who massacred his entire family and its absolutely not ok? Idk, this just wasnt the book for me

I absolutely loved this book. One of Felicity Heaton's best romance ever. I couldn't wait to read Grave's story ever since reading about him in Sable and Thorne's book. Some of the backstory that help in this book was so emotional I teared up. To understand why Isla did what she did and what happened as a result was heartbreaking. I read it and then read it again. I was truly captivated by everything happening in this book. I can't wait to read more.
Also it was great to catch up with everyone from the Vampire Romance Series. I especially loved to read about the new additions to Antione and Sera's family. Great to see Snow again too.

I took a bit of a break between book 10 and this one as I wanted to read the sort of prequel books (Vampire Erotique First) which took me while. I was also a little turned off by the betrayed and apart for a century story line as I don't really like books where the MCs are together then break up for whatever reason and then get back together. Anyways, I ended up loving this one, it was better than a few of the last books which I didn't rate as highly.

Mildly angsty and fast paced although a little forgettable too. This was a good story for a quickie read if you are pressed for time. Even though I'm uncertain if the main characters appeared in any previous books, their angsty separation and resentment of a century was easy enough to follow. The plot was simple, and the characters were only tormented by a misunderstanding and zero communication - as usual. Though for Heaton's books you will be guaranteed steamy hot scenes. 😉

Another great book!

This was another excellent addition of this well written and narrated series. Each book has had a action filled storyline. The characters are very well developed. I would recommend this book for an in depth escape, I feel you need to pay attention to the details to enjoy this authors complex stories. It was worth waiting for the audio version to release!

The opening scene was a disgusting disgrace to mates. No mate should be attracted or involved with another woman. And even worse was he was touching that woman and being disgusting because his mate could see it through the bond. He was despicable. I couldn’t read this. I honestly feel nauseated after reading that. Mates should be be capable of what you wrote.

Wow, great story, wasn't expecting that from Grave. He's been such a dick in most of the other books, I was expecting more of that in this one. I guess after a century you either become hard or wanting...we know now which it is. Isla's character is great as well, love the addition of her family and Graves' in the story.
