Michel Géricault has spent his entire life searching for the chance to restore honor to his father's memory. But nothing could have prepared him for what the Fates had decreed—that his stolen bride, Jerusa Sparhawk, would become the thief of his heart.
Though Jerusa Sparhawk fair dazzled as a rose-crowned bride, her girlish dreams of marriage were not to be. A soul-transforming passion in the person of Michel Géricault had swept her away from the bridal bower, near drowning her in his legacy of danger...and desire.
I didn't like this book quite as much as Sparhawk's Lady, but I still found it an enjoyable read, with a lovely tortured hero.
Michel Géricault loves his mommy dearest, and will do whatever he can to make her happy (and love him). She wants him to ruin the Sparhawks, who she blames for everything that went wrong in her life, all stemming from the fact that Gabriel Sparhawk (the heroine's father) was responsible for the hero's father's death. Now, the hero's father was a creep, as evil and cruel a pirate as could be, but the hero doesn't seem to get this, believing only what his mother tells him- that his father was perfect.
Now, the heroine and her family have no knowledge whatsoever of the hero's existence, so it comes as quite a shock to them all when he kidnaps her right before her wedding. He leaves his father's symbol, so they have an idea of who to blame, but for the most part are mystified. It certainly doesn't help matters that the heroine's fiancé is an ass, and accuses her of jilting him. The family is not amused, but the rest of the community is happy to believe it.
Meanwhile, the hero and heroine are on their way south towards Martinique and the hero's maman, who's rather insane and wants to punish the heroine. On the way, the heroine makes a number of escape attempts, some of them rather stupid, but is rescued by the hero each time things go wrong. Eventually, she finds she even starts to like him, despite that whole kidnapping thing, and rescues him a couple times. All sorts of people seem to be interested in seducing/raping the heroine, but the hero managed to fend them all off.
And then the hero and heroine realize they're in love, but the hero is still sworn to vengeance, and refuses to give it up no matter how much he loves the heroine...
I liked the hero. He started out pretty broody, but gradually he started opening up and having quite long periods of lightheartedness. I had a problem with the his name, though. I suppose it's because I'm not French, but "Michel" sounds an awful lot like "Michelle", and that's what I kept reading it as.
This book was gifted to me and I quite enjoyed it. I loved the playful banter between the main characters. A kidnapping turned love story with a few twists I didn't see coming.
