“We didn't say anything because there was such an awful lot to say, and no language to say it in.”
Cute book with witty dialogues, a believable sense of sentimentality and a protagonist with a bubbly personality. I adore books with serious topics told from a child's viewpoint. It's not as powerful as it could've been, but it's a light and fun read that tries to take a positive aspect on life and growing up. I loved every page of it.
Actually, this is more a collection of short stories rather than a novel. Each chapter tells us of the adventure Aram had either with one of his friends or with a family member. His family is Armenian, and they are farming people. Each story has its own life lesson that you don't have necessarily to agree with.
“I stared first at my cousin and then at the horse. There was a pious stillness and humor in each of them which on the one hand delighted me and on the other frightened me.”
This is the part of the first story and it's profoundly hilarious. Aram is forever ready to participate in any kind of prank or stunt. Also, he'll be a part of any type of stupidity if it makes the person he cares about happy. He's so fun to be around and he cares deeply. He's growing to be a wonderful human being.
Saroyan's style is conversational, straightforward, and plain. The stories don't have much of a plot or action, even character development, but they are easy to read. Basically, it's as easy to put the book down as it is to open it again. The storytelling is lovely, humorous, innocent, and with a scent of melancholy. Saroyan tells us about poor Armenian immigrants in California but it's never depressing because of his mix of colorfulness, warm humor, and disappointment.
Aram is a sweet protagonist, but the best moments in the book are when he's in interaction with other characters. The supporting characters are more interesting than Aram and they make the book so dynamic and cheerful. This is a story about his childhood, but not necessarily about him growing up.

I have six titles planned, five written by him and one biography. I decided to begin with this reread, and will update again here when I am finished.

This little book, originally published in 1940, has 14 short stories based on the author's youth in 1920's California. The narrator of the tales, a young Armenian-American named Aram, is a boy of nine when we first meet him in The Summer Of The Beautiful White Horse. Aram's cousin Mourad wakes him up at 4am one morning, urging Aram to come out and ride the white horse Mourad is sitting on. I liked the description of Mourad, who ". . .enjoyed being alive more than anybody else who had ever fallen into the world by mistake".
Another favorite was The Pomegranate Trees, where Uncle Melik may have been the worst farmer ever, but he dreamed big, and tried. When he buys 640 acres of desert scrubland and wants to create orchards, Aram helps and I think learns the value of having a dream and at least trying to make it a reality. Plus, I thought the entire scene with the horned toad, a creature Uncle Melik had never seen before, was priceless.
The book is filled with wonderful people, love for family and friends, humor and even some wisdom here and there. There are lots of boy's adventures (ditching school to go to the circus, swimming in the river one April) and some lovely writing throughout. Here is a description of that April river water:
" The first water down the mountains and the hills was cold, swift, and frightening. It was too cold and busy to invite the naked body of a boy. . . . It wasn't simply that the water was cold. It was more that it had no time for boys. The springtime water was as unfriendly as anything could be."
I think that was my favorite story, titled The Three Swimmers And The Educated Grocer. For that perfect description of the river, and for the interesting exchange with the man who runs the grocery. After the boys stop proving to each other that they are tough, they arrive at the store to buy beans and bread to eat. 'Aram' admits that 20 years later he still thought of that grocer and the conversation the four of them had.
To me the most moving story was called The Poor And Burning Arab. The phrase 'poor and burning' was used by Aram's Uncle Khosrove ("a man of furious energy and uncommon sorrow") to describe any person or situation that he felt was incredibly sad. Aram says the phrase is hard to translate from the original Armenian. Uncle Khosrove had a friend, a sad and very quiet Arab man. They never spoke more than a few words when they were together, but they understood each other perfectly. And I think maybe when Aram learned the reason for the Arab's sorrow, perhaps he also understood the reason for his silence, as well as how important it is for people to learn to listen to all that is said when someone does not speak.
This was my first book by Saroyan, but I would like very much to read more of his work, so I will be keeping an eye out for other titles.

bayıldım bayıldım. öyle garip bir kitap ki sierra nevada dağlarından, salt lake city’den, çöl topraklarından, kaktüslerden, packard model arabalardan, presbiteryen kilisesinden filan bahseden anadoluluların arasında olduğunuzu hayal edin… işte o kadar garip geliyor öyküler insana.
ben amerikanın güneyini zaten edebi anlamda çok severim ama gayet de benim dedeme, ananeme benzeyen dikranlar, aramlar, maryamlar, muradlar olunca ortalıkta insan neye sevineceğini şaşırıyor. hani gurbette türkçe bir cümle duymuşsunuz gibi. ki saroyan ingilizce yazıyor, amerika’da doğmuş büyümüş ama kökleriyle öyle bir bağı var ki işte bunu nasıl yedirmiş bürün öykülere.
ergenlik çağı erkek çocuğu öyküleri çoğu. aram öyle en azından. aram’ın, büyükbabasının, kuzenlerinin, amcalarının başından geçenler oldukça mizahi bir dille anlatılıyor. gözlemler, detaylar, aradaki ermenice türkçe sözcükler nefis. saroyan’ın ilk öykülerinde belliymiş nasıl da parlayacağı. ve elbette kendisi de aram gibi okuldan kaça kaça, yazarların peşine düşe düşe yapmış bunu.
özellikle “hanford’a yolculuk”, “nar ağaçları” (müthiş kültürel detaylar ve farklar var öyküde), “hatip kuzenim dikran”, “presbiteryen koristler” ve kitabın gözleri yaşartan tek öyküsü “zavallı bağrı yanık arap” isimli öykülere bayıldım.

Две момчета яздят снежнобял кон в притихналото утро. Наивен ентусиаст сади нарове в пустинята, опитвайки се да я превърне в райска градина. Патриархът на голям арменски род се опитва да поучи мързеливия си син. Индианец на име Локомотив 38 се появява в малко градче. Арменец и арабин водят дълги беседи без да разменят нито една дума.
Такива са героите на Сароян - колоритни и крехки, ентусиазирани и разсеяни, избухливи и плахи, арменци от Америка през 20-те години на ХХ век, носещи полъха на старата родина. А срещите с малкия Арам и многобройните му роднини са, както винаги, подвеждащо простички и докато се усетиш - вече са прелетели край теб като многцветен фенер в ясна нощ.

- Във всичко. Всичко което се сетиш, ляво, дясно, свер, изток, юг, запад, нагоре, надолу, наоколо, вътре, вън, видимо, невидимо, добро, зло, нито едното, нито другото и двете едновременно. Това е тайната.

- Обикновено не ни трябват особено. През повечето време те само прикриват това, което искаш да кажеш или което не искаш да знаеш.

How often can one say they read a book with their name in the title especially when their name is Aram? I have read this book many times and love it. There is a simple joy and kindness in Saroyan's words and it comes through on each page. I have to admit that, growing up, I was much like the Aram in the book and it is fun to remember those times.

A collection of linked short-stories published in 1940. Having heard many negative things about Saroyan and his writing ability, I avoided him for years; but when I began reading the first story in this book I realised that I was destined to become a fan.
His work is realistic and tells of poor Armenian immigrants in California but his style is upbeat and colourful, never depressing; and although his treatment of even the most sombre themes is unashamedly sentimental, it isn't maudlin. Saroyan's language is pared down and simple but his rhythms are delightful and infused with a warm humour.
The writer he most closely resembles to my mind is Ray Bradbury, but without the fantastical element. Imagine a straighter version of *Dandelion Wine* with tighter poetry and that's what *My Name is Aram* is like. I definitely intend to seek out more of Saroyan's work.

О, арменци мили: наивни и обичливи, мързеливи и дръзки; недодялани и открити; неудачници и живото-любиви.
О, ‘Арам’– майстор на разказа: класически чист, пряко-говорещ, сърце-достигащ; живото-черпещ. (Хареса ми, че Арам все е там, няма нужда да се прави на друг.)
„Преди двайсет години арменците в долината Сан Хоакин смятаха ораторството за най-великото, най-благородното, най-важното, даже едва ли не за единственото изкуство. Според наличните данни близо деветдесет и два процента от лозарите около Фресно смятаха всеки, способен да говори пред публика, за образован човек.“
Какви разкази — просто се наслаждаваш и след време сигурно ще искаш още топло-горчиви-живи американско-имигрантски (обикновено момчетийски) истории (първия съм го чела другаде – магичния като корицата „Лятото на красивия бял кон“; „Наровете“ ми напомни на Марковалдо на Калвино). Добре че повечето герои са деца и сборникът не е отявлено носталгичен. Но предните поколения? Автентични образи от различни родини.
„Когато се обадеше, гласът му като че ли идваше не от него, а от родината.“
Като останаха няколко разказа, започна да ми се „свиди“, че свършват. Плюс предвкусването, че пак предстои нещо интересно със заглавие като „Локомотив 38 от племето оджибуей“, точно след единия от любимите ми разкази с неговия финал – „Тримата плувци и ученият продавач“. И финалът на сборника е велик. Не е за религии. А къде са жените? Освен учителките. Нервират ли се майките и съпругите; или нямат думата… Към края разбрах – май са спокойни за децата си.
„Достатъчно беше да разберем, че циркът е поел към града, и ние с Джоуи започвахме да се питаме каква е ползата от образованието. […] Циркът беше всичко онова, което всичко останало не беше.“
Сароян е писател, който може да вземе всичко трудно и смешно от собствения си чудноват живот и род, да си позволи заглавие на разказ като „Хубава любовна история като от едно време със стихове и всичко останало“. Заобиколени сме от сложност, аз тук се отдадох на простотата, на свежия въздух, на смеха.
„Дръж си езика! – отвърна госпожица Дафни и макар да бях възмутен от отношението ѝ, аз веднага изплезих език и го хванах с два пръста, а малките мексиканчета, япончета, арменчета, гърчета, италианчета, португалчета и обикновени американчета в класа, които винаги разчитаха на мен да ги разсмея, се запревиваха по чиновете.“

И финалът на сборника е велик. Не е за религии. А къде са жените? Освен учителките. Нервират ли се майките и съпругите; или нямат думата… Към края разбрах – май са спокойни за децата си.
„Достатъчно беше да разберем, че циркът е поел към града, и ние с Джоуи започвахме да се питаме каква е ползата от образованието. […] Циркът беше всичко онова, което всичко останало не беше.“
Сароян е писател, който може да вземе всичко трудно и смешно от собствения си чудноват живот и род, да си позволи заглавие на разказ като „Хубава любовна история като от едно време със стихове и всичко останало“. Заобиколени сме от сложност, аз тук се отдадох на простотата, на свежия въздух, на смеха.
„Дръж си езика! – отвърна госпожица Дафни и макар да бях възмутен от отношението ѝ, аз веднага изплезих език и го хванах с два пръста, а малките мексиканчета, япончета, арменчета, гърчета, италианчета, португалчета и обикновени американчета в класа, които винаги разчитаха на мен да ги разсмея, се запревиваха по чиновете.“

یکی از جذابترین بخشهای سفر، بخصوص اگر شهر مورد نظر نسبتا کوچک باشد، بازدید از کتابفروشی و زیر و رو کردن کتابیهای آنجاست. این کتاب هم ماحصل یکی از همین گشت و گذارهاست. تا پیش از این نام سارویان در یکی دو مقاله و شعری از بوکوفسکی (شعر تباهی) به چشمم خورده بود و شناخت چندانی از آثار این نویسنده آمریکایی ارمنیتبار نداشتم. معذلک کتاب را صرفا بخاطر همین شعر بوکوفسکی خریدم. با خواندن چند سطر از کتاب به وجه طنزآمیز بودنش پی بردم و چون معمولا از داستانهایی با درونمایه طنز لذتی نمی برم، خواندن چند داستان ابتدایی کتاب با دلزدگی و پیشداوری همراه بود. اما در ادامهی کار، طنز داستانها با آن اتمسفر روستایی و شخصیت راوی کودکش بسیار تاثیر گذار و نافذ از کار درآمد. آنقدر که گهگاهی با صدای بلند می خندیدم و بعد از خواندن هر داستان مدتی را در آن حال و هوا سپری می کردم

"Лятото на красивия бял кон" е малък, но въздействащ сборник разкази от Уилям Сароян. Още в началото ми направи впечатление, че оригиналното заглавие е "My name is Aram" и всъщност лайтмотива на разказите е, че те всички са малки и наглед обикновени фрагменти от живота на Арам Гарогланян и неговите сякаш безкрайни братовчеди и роднини. Историите са ярки, картинни и много топли, сякаш е събрано най-хубавото от летата на живота и детството, по-един красив и небанален начин, с чувство за хумор и мъничко тъга. И точно затова съм очарована от избора на заглавието, още от самото начало една сутрин дойде красивия бял кон, изкушаващ и необуздан и зададе чудесна рамка на разказите, приключения, примесени с невинност и безгрижност, а колоритните роднини са представени с лек хумор, в тях прозира една родина, която героят не е виждал, но е пренесена от неговите близки в цялото им разнообразие. Родината се прокрадва в някои от разказите като идея, нещо далечно и загубено или непознато, без да е натоварена с централна роля и без да са нужни толкова много думи, понякога в мълчанието хората си казват достатъчно. А често и няма думи, които да изразят онова, което героите изпитват, но читателят го усеща.
"Арабинът умря. Умря като сирак в чужда земя на десет хиляди километра от дома. Искаше да се върне у дома. Искаше да види отново синовете си."
Възрастните в тези истории също като децата са идеалисти и мечтатели, понякога хитри, понякога малко мързеливи, наслаждаващи се на живота, понякога сблъскващи се с разочарованията. Обикновени и неподправени, искрени и директни, те бързо печелят симпатиите на читателя във всяка ситуация.
"Чичо Мелик навярно бе най-калпавият фермер в историята на човечеството. Той копнееше за красота. Искаше да я посади и да я гледа как расте..... Започнахме с нарове"
Почти всички разкази ми станаха много любими. Красота в обикновените делнични моменти, изживени и споделени дори и с непознати:
"Старият продавач определено беше голям чешит. Двайсет години по-късно реших, че е бил поет и държал магазина в малкото западнало селце не заради мижавата печалба, а заради царящата там непринудена поезия."
"Локомотив 38 беше просто един отегчен до смърт млад мъж, който беше използвал възможността да се забавлява със също толкова отегчен хлапак от малък град."
В тези моменти, в които хората случайно се срещат и всеки за себе си изживява нещо различно и вълнуващо, има нещо вълшебно. Те нарушават ежедневието и оставят своя отпечатък. Животът е низ от обичайни и необикновени моменти, толкова красиво разказани от Сароян.

Πολύ ωραία και εξαιρετικά καλογραμμένη συλλογή διηγημάτων, από τον Αρμένικης καταγωγής Αμερικάνο συγγραφέα Γουίλιαμ Σαρόγιαν. Το μικρό και συμπαθητικό αυτό βιβλίο περιέχει δεκατέσσερις ιστορίες με πρωταγωνιστή και αφηγητή τον Αράμ, ένα παιδί που ζει με την τρελή οικογένειά του στο Φρέσνο της Καλιφόρνιας.
Ουσιαστικά πρόκειται για μερικές από τις παιδικές αναμνήσεις του ίδιου του συγγραφέα, που ξεκινάνε από την ηλικία των εφτά χρόνων το μακρινό 1915 και τελειώνουν στην ηλικία των δεκαεφτά το 1925. Ο μικρός Αράμ είναι ένα καλό μα και σκανταλιάρικο παιδί και μας περιγράφει τον κόσμο γύρω του. Γνωρίζουμε μερικά από τα μέλη της ιδιόρρυθμης οικογένειάς του, βλέπουμε το μικρό χωριό στο οποίο μεγαλώνει, παρακολουθούμε μερικές στιγμές από την καθημερινότητά του και μαθαίνουμε πως ήταν η ζωή εκείνη την μακρινή εποχή. Και όλα αυτά από την οπτική γωνία ενός παιδιού.
Προσωπικά κάτι τέτοια βιβλία μου αρέσουν πολύ, με κάνουν να ταξιδεύω και να ξεχνιέμαι, και αυτό είναι τόσο καλογραμμένο, ευκολοδιάβαστο και ευχάριστο, που σίγουρα με ικανοποίησε και μου έφτιαξε λιγάκι το κέφι. Στην βιβλιοθήκη μου έχω ένα ακόμα βιβλίο του συγγραφέα, το μυθιστόρημα "Ανθρώπινη κωμωδία", που είναι και το πιο γνωστό του.

لطالما أحببت تلك الموهبة التي تتجلى في قدرة المؤلف الكتابة بنفس طفولي في هذا النص هناك كائنات لذيذة فيها حماس طفولي ونصوص إنسانية ذات اتصال مباشر مع القارىء لا تظنوا أن آرام يختلف عنكم عن أطفالكم فآرام لا يحب الذهاب إلى المدرسة وآرام يحب المقالب المضحكة ، ويتمنى لو يكون أكثر شجاعة مما هو عليه حقا أمام أصدقائه !
في النص حنين واضح للبلد الأم مغلف بحس النكتة مع محاولات للاندماج و نماذج تحاول أن تحقق التجانس في بيئة مختلفة ، الكتاب عبارة عن قصص قصيرة بطلها آرام يعيش في بيئة فقيرة ويقوم بمغامرات في محيط عائلته لتتسع وتشمل الأعمام وأبناء العمومة والأجداد والمعلمين وهكذا كما يحدث في أغلب العائلات القادمة من الشرق .. يستطيع أن يبقيك أرام على خط متوازي مع الدهشة تلك الدهشة التي تأتي من البراءة البراءة التي تكون قادرة على إحداث مفاجأة المفاجأة التي تجلب الابتسامة الساخرة
هناك براءة تنتشر في النص وهناك سحر غير مرئي ..

William Saroyan has a very unique writing style. I’m not really sure how to describe it, but I like it. Earlier this year I read his book The Human Comedy and it was probably the best book I have read this year. I enjoyed My Name is Aram almost as much as I enjoyed The Human Comedy.
As I said, Saroyan has a very unique way of writing his novels. This book is structured in a way so that it seems more like a series of short stories. Each chapter tells of an adventure that Aram and one of his friends of family members had. Each story teaches its own little life lesson, and Saroyan is not shy about flatly telling the reader what the moral of the story is. For example, at the end of one chapter that dealt with religion Saroyan writes “like most Americans, my faith consists in believing in every religion, including my own, but without any ill-will toward anybody, no matter what he believes or disbelieves, just so his personality is good.” As you can see, the morals can sound kind of cheesy, but they are kind of beautiful at the same time.
The character Aram isn’t a terribly compelling character on his own. However, most of the best moments in the book are when Aram is interacting with the supporting characters. The supporting characters in the story are almost more interesting the Arm himself. I love his uncle Melik who is so fascinated by a horned toad that Aram shows him and continuously asks “are you sure they don’t mind being picked up.”
Each story that My Name is Aram tells is a thing of beauty, despite the fact that they can be a bit heavy-handed. It’s like the book is a photo album, with each chapter being a lovely snapshot of life.

So simple, so infantile, so ironic, so fluent, but so profoundly wise. Can a work be all these things together? It can if it is written by William Saroyan. The offspring of the Old World who has lived, loved and absorbed with all his pores the New World, blends in a beautiful and colorful mosaic all the pieces of his Old and New essences. If you want the oriental wisdom, read My name is Aram, if you want to remember your foolish and crazy childhood read it equally, if you want to discover a part of the old armenian people, uprooted from their beloved homeland and thrown into an unfriendly country, start knowing the big Garoghlanian family, their past and their present. It's simply funny!

My Name Is Aram is a collection of stories about Aram's childhood as a first generation American boy born to Armenian parents. The setting is the early 20th century. I did not expect this frankly. I read it nonetheless and enjoyed some parts of it. Overall I do not understand why this book is praised so highly. My favorite story was about the poor burning Arab; I felt it had the most depth and substance of all. I would love to read for other Armenian writers.

خب این فقط یک معنا داشت،اینکه با چشمان باز سعی کنم از آنها جلو بزنم و مسابقه را ببرم.پس سعی کردم همینکار را بکنم ولی آنها علیرغم میل من،همانطور به طرز باورنکردنیای میرفتند.این بود که حسابی از کوره در رفتم و تصمیم گرفتم بخاطر این گستاخی،آنها را سرجایشان میخکوب کنم.پس شروع کردم به آزاد کردن نیروی حیاتی پنهانیام که در درونم بود.ولی،نمیدانم چرا این کار هم کارساز نشد و حتی یک وجب هم به آنها نزدیکترم نکرد و آنوقت این احساس به من دست داد که به شکل مرموزی رودست خوردهام.فکر کردم حالا که اینطور است،باید با بردن مسابقه،کسی را که به من رودست زده شرمسار کنم.پس،با نیرو توانی مضاعف به دویدن ادامه دادم.هنوز فاصله چندان زیاد نشده بود، و میدانستم که میتوانم خودم را برسانم.ولی بعد فهمیدم که نمیتوانم.
📝 برای من کتابهایی که از زبان کودکان نوشته میشه خیلی جالبه و خیلی ازشون لذت میبرم.این کتاب هم شامل ۱۴ داستان کوتاه از زبان پسر بچهای ۱۲ ساله و بازیگوش و باهوش به نام آرام گاروقلانیان است.او در خانوادهای مردسالار در کالیفورنیا زندگی میکند و داستانهایش در مورد اعضای دیگر خانواده که بهرهی هوشی چندانی هم ندارند بیان شده.که همین باعث جالب شدن داستانها شده.ویلیام سارویان نویسندهای امریکایی_ارمنی تبار است و نامهای استفاده شده در کتاب اکثرا اسمهای فارسی بودند.

E in realtà lo era. Le sue ultime parole furono:
"Ognuno deve morire, è vero, ma io ho sempre pensato che sarebbe stata fatta un'eccezione nel mio caso."
Io dico che
Uno scrittore deve sapere quello che vuole. Deve sapere come dirlo.
E non deve girarci troppo intorno.
No tentennamenti, No insicurezza.
Saroyan in questo è maestro.
Non ha fronzoli, niente proposizioni che si fanno la corte e si spogliano lentamente.
È uno scrittore di sostanza.
Protetto dal suo giubbotto di ego corazzato, scrive del mondo tutto con piglio solenne.
È poderoso.
Dominante.
E quando vuole
e quando serve,
molto divertente.

I grew up in Fresno in the early 60s, and I recall my Armenian friends, their families by that time well established in the city’s fabric. These stories of young Aram and his large family and all his relatives in Fresno and surrounding areas of the San Joaquin valley in the 1920s were a treat to read, both for their straight-forward, fun-loving exuberance, but also for the glimpses into the city and region’s history. These stories have the aspect of folk tales: exaggerated, with tricksters and wisemen, all propelled by simple motivations and simple desires. These stories’ earnest good heartedness have the ability to make one smile or laugh, and at the same time they inspire a vision of universal good will.
Some time soon I will read Saroyan’s longer work The Human Comedy.
