First off, this book was far shorter than I realized. I ended up finishing it in about two hours. I did enjoy it obviously, but due to its lack of length I felt some aspects were quite rushed/underdeveloped.

One thing that was lacking was world building. All the descriptions were pretty nonspecific. Settings including the academy, the village, the forest etc. were never thoroughly described. Secondly, even though I am told that Adrianna and Keldrin have known each other for months, by the end of the book, it does not feel that way. Honestly it feels like they've known each other for days. Also, I can see why Adrianna would love Keldrin, because he is kind, caring, handsome etc. But I'm not entirely sure why Keldrin fell for Adrianna so quickly. But I guess the point is to have them play star-crossed lovers.

In terms of the Trio - Keldrin, Xander and Razen, I really hope we get to see more of them. I like the idea of them as a team. I would love to see them bond as a team.

One complaint I have about the trio's development in the story so far is, while Adrianna obviously has a connection with Keldrin and a more underdeveloped one with Razen, we did not get to see more interaction between Xander and Adrianna. Honestly, we know next to nothing about him. I think it would have a deeper impact if they all had some connection with their sworn enemy. Because it'll make it more interesting when they all inevitably have to confront each other. I am hoping the next few books expands on the secondary characters more. Because for me the better developed the characters the better the story. Because I can forgive quite a lot in terms of plot if I truly love the characters.

Just a fair warning that those who are highly opposed to insta-love probably will not like this one. Although it isn't blatantly stated nor do either of the characters act on their feelings right way, they clearly develop feelings for each other pretty quickly. I'm okay with that at this point, mainly because I'm interested enough by the story to check out the next book regardless of some of this book's shortcomings. Something I've noticed in quite a few books, that this book does as well, is that for some reason heroines think that the best way to protect those they love is completely leave them, with no explanation. Yeah let's stop this tend, it is not a good one.

Hopefully the future books build upon this base and only get stronger from here - more world building, character development and backstory.

This took me awhile to get into because I found the writing style quite stunted at the start. I'm glad I pushed through that bit because I ended up really enjoying this book.

It's a great start to the series and I can't wait to see what happens next. What is Adriana, where are her family, what will happen to her and Keldrin. So many questions!

I'm not going to do a long review because I don't want to spoil anything. If you like magic, demons and star crossed lovers, then read this book.

I received a copy of this book from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.
From the summary I was expecting a very different novel. It was less of Adriana hiding her true identity and more of her being controlled against her will and forgetting to escape when a pretty boy is nice to here. An interesting premise was completely ruined by the unfortunate 'insta-love' trope. I felt like the main character - Adriana - had her entire agency taken away and it was frustrating. I did finish the book but I won't be continuing the series.

Demons, and Mages, and Beasts, oh my!

I have to say I am pretty surprised by this short book. I didn't think it was going to be that great. I was pleasantly surprised! So much magical adventure was fit into this book. It was original, captivating, and kept my attention. It was never confusing, easy to follow, and I want more of Adriana and Keldrin!

Loved! This was amazing, I loved the concept of the mages and the summoned creatures. It was written well, the characters were fun. It was on the short side but it didn't lack depth. The Mage history would be interesting to learn more of with back stories and to learn more on the wise man, saviors blood and warrior.I can't wait for the sequel it ended all too soon. Mild cliff hanger. 4.5 rating

Thanks to Netgalley and Weapenry Co-Op for giving me this book to review.

I liked Demon Princess as it was an easy fun read and straight forward if a bit forgettable. I liked that there was not cliché love triangle as there could have been. This book needs more world building and the timeline should be clearer as it felt like days had passed not months. Characters needed to be more fleshed out so we got to know them better, especially Adriana’s brother and father.

Adriana is spoiled and sheltered, but also intelligent, observant and full of willpower. Keldrin is a kind and caring good guy who is considerate and helpful. Aldric is mean snivelling and ambitious to the extent that he does not care who he hurts.

I enjoyed Demon Princess and would recommend it to fans of Cassandra Clare.

I gave it 2.5 stars

I was able to get through DEMON PRINCESS but I there were problems. There wasn't much to the world building, everything was a bit vague. A few issues that came up in DEMON PRINCESS weren't resolved or even brought up again after they were mentioned. I also felt that the characters were lacking development.

After all was said and done I was left with way too many questions. I wasn't interested enough to read more.

Demon Princess was a really enjoyable read. I just couldn't make myself turn away from the pages. Too bad it was so short. While it lacks on plenty of details, it has a lot of potential to be more. I liked Adriana and the other characters, especially the love interest. I also liked the concept and the adventure which, by the way, would be super badass had this book been longer. As soon as I finished it I was craving for the sequel.

What an unusual and creative premise: a demon princess, who is about to become demon king (if the opposition doesn't interfere), gets magically dragged off by a young mage in training to be a "summon beast," which for all practical purposes makes her his pet and slave.

Demon Princess is definitely my kind of story – we get ripped right into the action of the story from the beginning and let the world-building happen along the way.

I find the main characters interesting:

Adriana is intriguing. Though she doesn't say much, we get to follow her thought process, which is quite different from what she displays externally.

Aldric acts like a jerk to Adriana -- but I get him. He's been preparing all life to summon a beast, who will help him in battle, who will stand by his side, be his friend, protect him… and he gets a girl (who he presumes incorrectly is defenseless).
Keldrin is a genuinely good guy. He just can’t help himself. That’s how he is. He cares about and helps perfect strangers, such as Adriana.

Even Princess Salvene is interesting to me (though her names sounds like a white wine or a former Yugoslav Republic ;) ). She’s haughty – from Adriana’s point of view – but I don’t write her off yet. She could develop into someone pivotal for the story.

Razen, the wiseman, seems pretty noble. Although he shoves Adriana off a roof-top, his intentions seem to be of a protective nature (protecting humans against demons). But Razen is willing to risk his life to go into Barren Land to save his phoenix egg's life – and that impressed me.

The Adrianna/Keldrin romance is soooo sweet. It's cute how Adriana's feelings for Keldrin keep surfacing ever so slightly before she aggressively shoves them back down where they belong. Here's this mega-powerful demon princess (albeit not in control at the moment) who has these fleeting feelings of joy when Keldrin does or says something to show he cares about her. It's super-sweet...

Still there are many questions left unanswered.

Why is Aldric of all people -- a rather talentless mage -- able to summon such a powerful demon? I suspect that Adriana is able to be summoned because she has fairy blood in her. Although she doesn't believe this to be true, I am interested to see, as the story unfolds in the next installment, whether she has some fairy ancestors she doesn't know about. We know now that Adriana’s father is Keldrin's archenemy, but we know nothing about Adriana's mother -- maybe she's part or all fairy?

Why does Razen bring together Adrianna and the trio that can defeat a demon king -- Savior Blood, Wiseman, and Warrior? Why and how can this trio defeat the demon king? We don't get any depth as to why this particular mix of people is so important or how this came to be. We just learn that that's the way it is (or has always been). The same goes with demon/human hostility: That's the way it has always been. Why? We don't really know.

I do think it's good, however, that this foursome (Future Demon King, Savior Blood, Wiseman, and Warrior) get to know each other -- and hopefully they will eventually befriend each other. That might make a human/demon armistice, or even peace possible... (oh, I am such the optimist... all I am saying is give peace a chance... :D).

I have to say: I loved this book.

The characters (both the main and supporting characters) are interesting and I had a stake in their well-being. I really cared what happened to them.

I have already picked up the next installment Demon King and I am very much looking forward to reading it.

I received an eARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I want to have a proud moment: this is the first book I've finished in one day! (I mean, it's really sad that I can only read a really short book in one day sigh).

This book was fantastic. It was such a quick read (and not just because it's short!), I couldn't stop putting it down! There wasn't a single boring bit. I'm kinda annoyed that it's so short, but then I'm also really happy that what could've been a long ass boring book was cut down to the brief important stuff. Amazing.

A bit problem I had with this book is that it's set over a couple of months, but it feels like days. Originally I thought the insta love was a problem, then I realised it's set over a longer length of time. I think this is because of the shortness of the book, we don't get enough time to connect and react properly.

There was also a lack of world building. I'm not gonna lie, I thought (for some ridiculous reason) that when Adriana gets summoned, that she comes through to present day. But this isn't the case. I was lost for a while as to how the setting is. (not knowing it's a fantasy) I went with medieval type because of the demons and magic, but the horse and carriage thing makes me think it's set a little later.

Okay okay okay so Adriana is this amazingly cool character. I wasn't sure what to think of her at first, but when you finally get to see what she's like, she's intelligent and cunning. But she's also extremely patient. So many YA protagonists lack this. Adriana will stop to watch what's going on around her instead before making a decision on what to do. She's also really easy to connect with and I felt for her when Aldric was such a doofus and a wanker. You know a good book when you want to defend a character and physically fight someone who isn't even real.

I also really like how she's only wanting the throne to keep other prick's away. She's keeping it for her brother or her father. I love this. So many protagonists/villains want it for themselves, and the power and wealth it represents, but Adriana has no interest.

I really loved Keldrin but I don't know what to say about him, so I'll leave this short paragraph confessing my love.

And Aldric's a dick.

I kinda really wanted to learn more about Xander. He's part of the trio, but we don't know anything about him. I'm wondering if this is something that'll come into play in later books? Because he's one of the trio, he can use the fact that Adriana doesn't know anything.

And this last little point, I wish to say thANK GOD THIS BOOK FOLLOWS A DEMON! The protagonist is the stereotypical bad guy rather than a "hero". I mean, Adriana has a lot of potential to be a hero, but she's perceived as a bad chick. I like how this book is different from other YA/fantasy books I've read.

A+ book right here, y'all better be going off to read it right now. I'm gonna read Demon King, the sequel, because I can't get enough.

Demon Princess is a young adult fantasy/ paranormal mash up and is the first in the Demon Kingdom Fairy Tales series by Kassandra Lynn. I am such a sucker for fantasy and paranormal story that deal with royalty in some way. I just love a royal family (they normally have some awesome drama.) and I also can't resist some good ole magic in a castle. So when I saw Demon Princess had not only paranormal royalty, but also the magic of a promising fantasy element, and a gorgeous cover, I knew I couldn't pass this one up. And while I found it to be a little on the short side, I thought this was a promising start to what seems to be a cool series. I can't wait for the next book.

Demon Princess has a really great cast of characters. In fact, they were my favorite part of the story. I thought Adrianna (the main character), Keldrin, Xander and Razen all added something unique to the story and I appreciated that they each had a very distinct personality. Demon Princess will appeal to character driven readers. I found the world building and plot to be good as well, but because the story is rather short, there are still things I want answers, and still areas of the story that I am hoping are more fully developed and explored in the installments of the series to come.

This was a story that built for me. I had a bit of a hard time becoming invested and I had to put this book down a few times, but once I got about 20% into the story, I found myself becoming more and more intrigued by the book. It is one that gets better as it goes on, in my opinion. And the romance is one of those star crossed/forbidden love tropes, which I always enjoy. I can't wait to see more on the romance front in the next book.

Bottom line: if you are a fan of fantasy and paranormal stories featuring demons, magic and a forbidden love, Demon Princess is a quick read that I think you will enjoy. The series is one that I am going to keep my eye on.

I'm not going to lie. My first impression of this book was based on my insta-love with that cover. Then, I read the synopsis and it reminded me a lot of a book I read a long time ago, I don't even remember the title but it stuck with me all this time, so I figured I may as well give Demon Princess a try. I mean, what's not to love, there's demons, magic, danger and maybe a little romance.

Demon princess Adriana finds herself in a bit of a pickle when she is summoned by a mage-in-training to be his summon beast. While she stuck in the human kingdom, the demon kingdom is left without a leader since both her father and brother have gone missing.

I really liked Adriana mainly because she started out as a weeping, spoiled girl and transforms to a determined bad ass. After she has a bit of a pity party, she pulls herself together and keeps trying to get herself out of her predicament. She's a powerful demon on a leash. She's going to shows the mages that it's always a bad idea to try to cage a lion.

The story line is very interesting and I can sense that this first book is only the beginning. Adriana is set to be the Demon King once she frees herself, and if he father and brother never come back. In history, the Demon King is always defeated by a trio of a warrior, a wiseman and a Savior blood, who she just so happens to team up with while she tries to escape. The whole time she's constantly trying to keep her identity a mystery.

Keldrin is a sweetheart and he sees Adriana as his damsel in distress. He's constantly trying to protect her and get the rest of the mage community to see her as a person and not a beast.
With a great plot line and likable characters, I'll definitely be looking for the next book.

Summarized Review: As soon as I read the synopsis for the book, I was hooked. A demon princess magically disappearing during her coronation? Sold! The reason for 4 stars is that some things are almost entirely untouched and the writing at the start of the book was a tad diminutive. Once Kassandra found her groove, I couldn't put it down.

The protagonist, Adriana, is an unlikely heroine I wasn’t sure I’d like, but soon found myself rooting for whole-heartedly. She was spoiled, yes, but I never felt that she looked down on others the way they looked down on her. I really like that it deals with mages and demons, which are definitely two aspects of this book that I’m eager to learn more about as series goes on. It's different from the faeries and witches that I'm used to reading about in series.

I’ll definitely be picking up the rest of the series! Kassandra Lynn has found herself a new reader in me. (:

A very quick fantasy read , more like a prequel than a first book in the series.
Adriana was supposed to be crowned the Demon King, but was summoned and enslaved by a mage instead. Humiliated and powerless against the binding magic, she falls in love with the one person who is kind to her and takes care - Keldrin. He is also willing to help her on her quest to get rid of the bond with her master Aldric, unaware of her true identity as a demon. Surrounded by enemies, Adriana must be especially careful to survive..
At first this story was really promising. A demon princess, supposedly with strong magic, now helpless and unable to channel her powers, forced to fight and not rely on her guard. I agree that Adriana has grown some backbone during the book, using her wits and kind heart to overcome being the pampered and sheltered princess she used to be. But forced to swallow her pride, she came out first like spoiled and weak child. Thankfully, that changed later a little, but I would like to see if this gets better in the next book. Actually the only character I was really fond of is Keldrin. Aldric is a weak mage, a coward, and needlessly cruel, and his motives are more than unclear, which makes him hard to understand. What I would also like to know is if the growing love between the main characters will turn into some serious love, or would come out as a superficial teenage crush in the end. Depends on the execution.
Plot development was okay, fast and with some twists, but in general it was quite summed up, which then came out as lacking some depth. And that means also providing more details about the world setup and precise establishment. The world building is very interesting, but still vague, and I would love to understand how things work in order to get fully into the story. I like the author's writing, and if she worked more on the background, I would give the book definitely a better rating.

This book surprised me, it was so fast to read and caught me up since the first pages. Adriana is the Demon Kingdom princess and was to be as Demon King until her father and brother appear again. But she was summoned as a beast but demons can't be summoned she has to find out how to scape and come back to her home. She met Keldrin a powerful (almost) Savior Blood and fall in love with him.
A completely page-turner book and of course I want to know how this story ends.

This book was provided to me from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. I swear on my bookshelf that this has not affected my opinion of the book.

Adriana's coronation day did not go exactly as planned. She is not even supposed to be the Demon King yet. But in the absence of both her father and her brother, she is forced to step up to the throne and take charge of the Demon Kingdom.

But before Adriana even has a chance to feel the crown on her head, she is summoned to a fledgling mage who has no idea the power that he just summoned. Now instead of wearing her crown and controlling the power of the Demon Kingdom, Adriana is forced to obey the will of a weakly mage who cannot even light a candle by himself.

If Adriana wants to keep her kingdom safe, she has to hide her identity from the mortals who trapped her and get back to her leaderless kingdom before it falls apart.

Review

Sometimes size does matter when it comes to books. Some books are too long and long-winded to capture by attention (The Secret History by Donna Tartt) or they are too short and lacking in detail for me to fully appreciate the story. Demon Princess falls short of my standard for world-building and character development.

For me, world-building and character development are two of the most important aspects of fantasy novels. Demon Princess struck out with me because, due to its short length, neither of those aspects were fully elaborated.

I really wish that I knew more about everything in this book. The story and the characters were interesting, but I finished the book and still felt as if I knew nothing about them.

The history of the world and the inner workings of the characters were mostly thrown aside for the romance. I would say that a good 3/4 of the book was romance and all of the world-building and fantasy was shoved into 1/4 of the book. Normally, I like these ratios to be flipped.

There were also long periods of time that were completely skipped over in the novel. This is to be expected since it is so short, but instead of enhancing the story, this time gap further disconnected me from the characters and the plot. Skipping large amounts of time is one of my pet peeves in novels. Time gaps always make me feel as if I missed something and leave me wondering what happened during the time without getting any answers.

Due to the unique nature of fantasy novels, I believe that the longer they are, the better. Now, this is not a steadfast rule, but the more detail and length that is put into the world-building and descriptions, there is a better chance that a fantasy book will impress me.

When I read the synopsis of this book, I did not expect romance to be the main focus. I wanted the culture and history of the new world that I was thrown into and some memorable characters for me to hate or love. In the end, I was just indifferent to everything since I did not know enough to really develop an opinion about most of the characters and the world.

The inklings of ideas that were introduced in this book were interesting, which I will give it credit for. There were some unique concepts in Demon Princess that I have not encountered in other YA fantasy books. This is rather hard to accomplish due to the massive amount of books that I read, especially fantasy novels. If those concepts were expanded and used more throughout the novel, my final rating would have been much higher.

Even though correlation does not always result in causation, I believe that more detail, events, and length in Demon Princess would have greatly improved the novel.

Recommendations

I would recommend Demon Princess to anyone who likes short and sweet fantasy novels heavy on the romance and light on the fantasy. I would also recommend it to people who like less descriptions and more romance.

I would not recommend Demon Princess if you are a fan of description-heavy and detailed fantasy novels.

I may have accidentally read the entire book in one sitting without even stopping for water because I needed to see what happened. And I am remarkably okay with that, except now I am ready for the next one and it is going to seem like a ridiculously long wait.

I won't say that this book touched me deeply, but I was definitely drawn in quickly and it was hard to stop reading. It was fun, which is sometimes more than I can say about books, even books I genuinely like, and there will always be a place for fun books in my reading.

Adriana, our titular "demon princess", is actually more of a character than simply that, which is refreshing. It is an unfortunate thing I have noticed in YA fiction where once a character is given a "thing" that (s)he is, the author feels like they are done and no longer have to bother fleshing the character out. This is not true here, and it made it much easier to get inside Adriana's head and stay there happily.

She does not do knee-jerk reactions to things, she's capable of being patient and thoughtful and actually clever, and she's willing to re-evaluate things that she's heard all her life without falling into either the trap of immediately tossing everything (herself and her opinions included) aside OR refusing to look at things that contradict her previous beliefs. Thank you, Kassandra Lynn, for a YA main character that doesn't act like a complete idiot.

Because of all of this, I am significantly more invested in the romance that eventually starts to develop, and I'm much more willing to go along for that particular ride. Bonus points for it being a generally non-creepy romance, of course--I've seen a few too many books where the romance is treated as the pinnacle of the characters lives and is also a deeply unhealthy relationship besides. This does not do that.

I feel like I've spent a lot talking about what this book is not, which is good in that all the things I've mentioned are things I don't want my books to be, but probably not the most helpful in explaining what the book actually is.

It is a good read, certainly, and filled with characters that are different. A few of them fall into the "overly villainous villain" category, but it's the first book in a series and is in Adriana's viewpoint, so that gets some slack. The rest of the crop are interesting, and if we don't get to hear as much about them as would be helpful in fleshing them out, they also seem to be characters that actually have something there to flesh out, so that is a hopeful sign for future books in the series.

I really liked the whole "Wise Man, Savior, Warrior" part of the world. It felt a little like an RPG, but in a good way (is there a bad way it can feel like that, though? Just me?). I'm interested to see where that is going, and what may come of it. I'm thinking prophecies in the next book, maybe? I do love me some prophecies.

I'll be picking up the next book and probably swallowing it whole, as I did with this one.

The End, there is no cliffhanger and our main girl achieves her goals. I felt like it was a good ending and something I can walk away from with closure. Though there are many, many unanswered questions I’m not sure if the curiosity is there to continue this series. I liked the characters okay but it seemed a bit too…oh I don’t know I can’t quite put my finger on it except to say why. Where are all the links and why were we not given more of a history. Although I’d like to know how it ends I don’t see myself rushing to the book store. If any of y’all know what happens tell me!!! LOL jk I’ll probably keep an eye out on all the installments and make my final decision later.

This book describes a very interesting world full of potential. With the clear tension between the mages and the demons, between the secrets and the lies… All of it was ‘entertaining’ in a way.

I’m glad this book stepped away from the “Oh, this guy summoned her and they’ll fall in love”. Let me tell you, Aldric is a huge dick and Adriana is very aware of it, and hooray for no love story happening there (as it would’ve been the obvious but wrong choice).

I truly did love the character of Adriana, especially since we were in her head most of the time and her being conflicted about her choices and what her people has done, is just very fascinating. It makes me believe that she as Demon King could truly change a lot of things for the better.

The best thing I could say about this book is that all the characters are plausible and interesting. The world where the story is set is new, appealing and intriguing, and so are the rules. The presence of magic and non-human creatures makes it all the more hooking.

I didn’t expect much about this book and I was kindly surprised, the plot is really interesting and a breath of fresh air considering the amount of books about vampires that flood the libraries lately. It took some time to reach the conflict and the climax, and it actually was shorter and faster than I expected, but it was good nonetheless.

It seems to me like this book was an introduction to what is coming up in the next volumes, it places us in what the main story is going to be and introduces the main characters, their motivations and it lets us see a bit of whom they are. I’m very intrigued to see how it continues and surely will be reading the second book sooner rather than later!

Demon Princess: Demon Kingdom Fairy Tales Book One by Kassandra Lynn

Demon Princess Adriana takes over the Throne becoming the Demon King, when her Brother goes missing and her Father is gone. Then summoned by Aldric (a Mage in training) to go to the human kingdom. Adriana is trapped in the human world, trying to hide her real identity and trying to escape her mortal enemies.

Adriana is very likable, she has a lot of responsibilities and finds herself in a bad situation. Aldric is likable as well. They story is fast paced, (with) well developed characters , an original (detailed) plot. There is drama, action , danger and mystical creatures throughout. I highly recommend Demon Princess to those who love a magical fantasy.

I liked the story because it was easy and fun to read, but also a quick read. I really liked the concept of demons and mages, and would have liked a little bit more of world building (it wasn't very specific or detailed) and background about the species and stuff but either way it still grabbed my attention from start to finish.

Is it weird that I want Adriana and Keldrin to end up together? I know it's almost impossible and forbidden but I am really rooting for them. I'm sort of hesitant to read the next book because the synopsis of the 3rd book makes it seem like she doesn't end up with Keldrin but with a guy named Sebastian and I'm not too sure how invested I want to get in the series if that happens… Plus the book comes out in April, like 2 months away, and it'll kill me to have to wait a few months to read it…

When I read the description for this book I thought it was going to be terrible and cheesy. Boy, was I wrong. This exciting tale follows the demon princess as she struggles to get free from captivity. It poses good questions about how we treat others. I was able to easily relate and react to this book.
Kassandra managed to write an exciting fantasy, with fabulous descriptions and not have that lingering unbelievable texture. There were a couple of parts that I wanted to skim over, but overall I really enjoyed this book. I was completely encased in the Demon Princes story and had to finish it. By the end, I was left wanting more. If you like fantasy, try this book, it is a great story and a fun read. It will be worth it.

I love this book, I have no idea why I've never heard about it before. The only thing that was disappointing is that it was too short. The characters are really lovable. Adriana has the worst luck in the world and she has a big heart because throughout the book she keeps helping her enemies, Keldrin is such a gentleman and he is really thoughtful, the only character that I hate is Aldric who was very selfish, mean, jealous and self-centered. The ending was really sad but her struggle is totally understandable. All in all I give this book 5 stars.

A charming, quick read
This book is a good example of why sometimes simpler is better. This was a fast and easy read that got to the point without having too many characters, side plots, background information, or minuscule details dragging us down. At the same time, it is not at all rushed. I highly respect an author who can pull off a fun read set by a good pace. A well-deserved five stars for this book.
