The year is 2781. Lieutenant Drago Tell Dramis is a newly trained fighter pilot heading out on his first mission. This is the moment he’s dreamed of for years, but his dream is turning into a nightmare. Drago’s team leader hates him, and it’s hard to focus on a routine mission when the whole team is anxiously waiting for news of something far more important. A comet is on a collision course with one of humanity’s oldest colony worlds. Today is the last chance to save the planet Hera from total destruction.

Overall: A novella in the finest tradition of Science Fiction. If Anne McCaffrey and Isaac Asimov had gotten together, they would have written something very much like this.

On 1st Reading: I love the work of Janet Edwards. This did not disappoint.

I'd been saving this one as a treat for myself - well after a hard week I picked it up and was treated to all the best of Science Fiction in one slim package.

If you like SF, you can't go wrong with Janet Edwards.

On 2nd Reading: I have to say that the first time I read this I was swept up by the adventure of the story and hit with a hefty dose of good old-fashioned sense of wonder. On my second reading I was able to pay a little more attention to the details and my respect for the author has grown even more. While there is a great action story going on, a major thread through this story centres on cultural traditions and misunderstandings - something I can totally empathise with after having mortally offended certain people without having the faintest idea I was doing so. This side of things is very well presented and I look forward to find out more about the complex societies in this setting.

On 3rd Reading: I reread this in preparation for the sequel story which is due to be released on Christmas Day 2020. Still great. If this story can withstand three readings I think it's pretty well certain that I like it! Janet Edwards is definitely my favorite author writing today!

On 4th Reading: The sequel short story didn't come out on Christmas Day 2020, instead it morphed into two novels, the first of which - Hestia 2781, came out in July 2021, hence this reread. After reading it four times I can confidently say that this is a darn good story and I am buzzing as I jump straight into the long awaited sequel.

I read this short story hoping it would be a good introduction to the main series. However, one of the characters described the first part of the book as; ”remarkably childish”, which seemed fairly apt , although moronic might have been closer to the mark.
I suppose it wasn’t that bad, but there is no way I could stand ‘Drago’ in a longer novel.

Like all the books about the Earth Girls series, once you start reading them you can't put them down and when you finish them you always want more. It was a great book like always.

This was a difficult and cringey short story… the author has some imaginary situation where horrific bullying and harassment by a superior officer is normal and acceptable - even by coworkers! - in a military situation. Worse, apparently brotherhood and tribalism makes it okay. Ugh.

It’s all dialogue and inner monologue without any actual SF at all. Thank goodness this rubbish was a really short story!

It was nice to learn more about Jaxon and about what actually happened during the Hera incident and why Drago won a medal.

Here's hoping for a Jaxon and Family short story in the future. First I want my Playdon story then I want this.

Also more Drago. Lots and lots of Drago.

This is such a great short story! It’s our first real look into Drago and it jumps right into the middle of the famed Hera comet blockade. The comet blockade was briefly referenced in the Earth Girl trilogy and now we get to experience the whole thrilling incident as the events unfold from Drago’s perspective. This short story takes place right at the beginning of Drago’s military career as he joins Jaxon’s fighter team fresh from the Military Academy.

It was so interesting getting this first look into the relationship between Drago and Jaxon. It was great seeing how the fighter team was at the very beginning. I loved seeing Drago is action as a pilot since we only gets hints of his flying ability in the trilogy. Drago really is a brilliant pilot, I wasn’t surprised to learn he had the best fighter pilot scores of anyone for the last decade. I loved seeing them in the thick of this tense situation and how they come together as a team.

I also liked getting some insight into Betan customs and the vital importance of Fidelis within Betan clans as well as the complexity of their punishment and redemption rituals. It does seem like plain bullying at first but as they go on to explain, it takes on much deeper meaning. This is a thrilling, action-packed short story that really did read like a novella despite the short length. It sets up perfectly for the Drago trilogy, another must read in the Earth Girl universe.

Oh man, I just love Drago!!!
He is such a delightfull character and I always enjoy reading about him. I really loved seeing his relationship with Jaxon evolve or better, being reinstated. And learning more about what happened between Drago and Gemelle was just sooo good.... just noticed, that Gemelle never has an appearence in the books (in person)... that's sad, but can't be changed (maybe in the future^^)
I enjoyed reading about what happened on Hera. I really wanted to know what happened there since it was casually mentioned in Earth Star... and I have to admit, it was different than I expected.

Now I really want and need a novella about the first meeting between Drago and Marlise!!

Even though I really enjoyed this novella and I love Drago so much, I can give this just 4.5 stars... The beginnig was a little bit confusing... but as it started rolling it got better!

Attempted reread December 2023

DNF - PG 19

Why?

I'm sorry. I know I liked this the first time I read it - and I still deeply adore the universe Edwards has created - but am I really supposed to like Drago?

Am I really supposed to read a story where the main character confesses his love to a girl, she turns him down because she isn't interested in him (and, in fact, is already dating someone else) and he bides his time a while before proposing marriage, she laughs at him and he responds by telling lies to break up her current relationship? Because that's what Drago does.

Really? I'm supposed to want to read a story where the main guy doesn't get that no means no?

Another fun glimpse into the background of one of Earth Girl's side characters. This one started a little slow as I like my Drago cool and confident and he was not here. But it came to a very satisfying climax that saw him regain some of his swagger.

Fun early story of Drago right out of military academy. As much as I like Drago, I enjoyed getting a better view of Jaxon's character and a glimpse of Gemelle (Jarra's brother and sister). Great characters is a big reason why I love this world.

Very short - and missed some vital discussion opportunities at the end, I think. But still, give me more Drago anytime!!
