John Ostrander is an American writer of comic books. He is best known for his work on Suicide Squad, Grimjack and Star Wars: Legacy, series he helped create.

Originally an actor in a Chicago theatre company, Ostrander moved into writing comics in 1983. His first published works were stories about the character "Sargon, Mistress of War", who appeared the First Comics series Warp!, based on a series of plays by that same Chicago theatre company. He is co-creator of the character Grimjack with Timothy Truman, who originally appeared in a back up story in the First Comics title, Starslayer, before going on to appear in his own book, again published by First Comics in the mid 1980s. First Comics ceased publication in 1991, by which time Ostrander was already doing work for other comics companies (his first scripts for DC Comics were published in 1986).

Prior to his career in comic books, Ostrander studied theology with the intent of becoming a Catholic priest, but now describes himself as an agnostic. His in-depth explorations of morality were later used in his work writing The Spectre, a DC Comics series about the manifestation of the wrath of God. His focus on the character's human aspect, a dead police detective from the 1930s named Jim Corrigan, and his exploration of moral and theological themes brought new life to a character often thought of as impossible to write. He has also worked on Firestorm, Justice League, Martian Manhunter, Manhunter, Suicide Squad, and Wasteland for DC.

I expected a lot more from this series. One issue is left in the "force storm" series, and it feels like little has happened, like the story is only just getting off the ground. I'm only new to comic books, so maybe this is normal, and there's nothing to complain about.

The art in this issue was really good.

A lot of context added to Xesh's character, by way of flashbacks.

There was no immature back and forth between the jedi.

"Really liked it." - 4 out of 5 star rating.

What can I say... I am a sucker for these Rakatan Infinite Empire comics based pre-The Old Republic. I took a step left in the timeline for this series, but that's okay. I get more Xesh, more Trill, more Predor action, and more Tho Yor deep dive/backstory.

The grand conclusion is coming up next, which I believe will be the last Xesh comic I'll touch for quite some time, since I read these in reverse order and I am essentially reading the 'Prequel' now for this arc, already having finished the comics to the right of this.

Looking forward to #5 and closing out September 2025 as my last comic book read for the Q3 of 2025!

I love this and I love what the Rift and specifically the Abyss of Ruh are doing to the Je’daii. At this point, they do not turn from the dark side but rather use it in balance with the light. But the Force has become unbalanced with the crashed Rakatan ship. It is brilliant and thrilling. I loved the parallel between Xesh in the arena and Xesh in the Rift. He’s such a fascinating character and I think I might be in love with him.

[Original review December 21, 2016]

The fourth issue of the Force Storm arc shows a darker side to each of the characters as they try to stay balanced in the dangerous abyss. Xesh also struggles to stay alive in the abyss, and tries to regain his lost memories. Je'daii Rangers Hawk Ryo and Rori Fenn follow the young Journeyer's trail. Another excellent edition to the Force Storm comics.
