When Carly Reese’s beloved fashion boutique catches fire, she sees her dreams go up in smoke. The good news is that Carly was saved from the flames by a barking dog nearby. She soon discovers the heroic pooch is a trained K-9 who’s guarding his unconscious partner …a gorgeous firefighter who ends up in Carly’s arms.
Noah Glover and his K-9 are a fearless duo, and Noah has clearly met his match with the brave, beautiful Carly. Soon they team up to track down the arsonist behind the blast – a psychotic criminal who’s intent on framing Noah. Meanwhile, the sparks between Noah and and Carly could ignite a five-alarm fire. Should they smother their feelings in the name of justice…or fan the flames of passion?
D. D. Ayres is the author of the K-9 Rescue series which includes Primal Force and Force of Attraction. She loves men in uniforms and dogs, making the K-9 Rescue series with St. Martin's Press a dream come true. She currently lives in Texas where she's at work on her next novel.
Carly Harrington-Reese works late one night in her soon-to-be-opened boutique when she hears an animal whimpering from the next door unit. She discovers an unconscious Noah Glover and his service dog, Harley, and barely has time to rescue them before the place erupts in fire. Noah is an arson investigator but all evidence points in his direction this time as the perpetrator. And Carly is caught squarely in the middle.
I really liked the mystery/suspense angle of the story, especially the inclusion on the real arsonist's point of view (but we still have to guess his identity). I also appreciated the added diversity as Carly is a former super model who happens to be Black. Unfortunately, the "romance" between Carly and Noah was more a lust-fest and it was difficult to swallow their instant love after only knowing each other a few days. There was a missed opportunity here to develop this relationship, including Noah's role as a single parent.
As with the other books in the series, Harley is the real star of the show, displaying his exceptional skills as an explosives expert while also illustrating his relationship to his handler. I read the series primarily for that education and this book delivered. If that's your main interest and you like mystery and suspense, you'll still enjoy the story despite the flaws in the romance. I'm still a faithful fan and look forward to the next book. 3.5 stars
(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review)
Noah is an arson investigator with the Ft. Worth Fire Department. Carly is a former model who comes home after her addict husband dies of an overdose. Carly finds herself at the right place and the right time to save Noah from dying in a fire. Someone has set him up to take the fall for a destructive fire and killing himself in the process. But Noah does not start the fire, he survives and then starts his own investigation to clear his name.
There is good pacing and great sexual chemistry between Carly and Noah, but their relationship is dubious to me. It happens too fast and there is really nothing behind or under it; there is no foundation. It takes all of three days before Carly thinks she in love with him...um, no. I'm especially suspicious because Noah is very abrasive and harsh. I found it difficult to like him at first.
The upshot to the story is that although Noah is still sharp-edged, the more I get to know him, the more I like him. His love for his young son and his history with his previous marriage shows his soft heart and that takes the corners off for me. I wish the author could give us more of his story. With all the drama with his ex-wife, he all but shuts down and relegates himself to living an incomplete life.
I also like that D.D. Ayers includes the villain's perspective without revealing his/her identity. It keeps the mystery interesting.
Lastly, I am a little flummoxed at the Epilogue. This couple runs very hot. They interactions are combustable. If that is the case, why would it take two months for them to get back together after the end of the mystery? It just does not ring true for me.
Overall, I find this an uneven story with both great moments and unbelievable plot points. I'm conflicted about my rating, but there is enough good storyline to keep me interested to the end.
Explosive Forces is book five in the K-9 Rescue series by D.D. Ayres. This one stands on it’s own. The only connecting factor between Explosive Forces and the other books in this series is the kennel the K-9 was trained at, yet that’s just a mention.
Carly is sassy, fiery, and goes after what she wants. Noah is a single dad, good at his job, and all out sexy alpha male with his adorable K-9 partner Harley.
Explosive Forces starts off strong with our heroine, Carly, saving the life of our hero, Noah, and his K-9 partner, Harley. It’s a fiery and explosive encounter in more ways then one. Their is no slow burn for this couple. They pretty much take off from the get go even though they don’t know each other. Ones life and carrier is in danger and the others business is about to not get off the ground. There’s an intense plot, it's fast-paced, entertaining, and full of sweetness that only a K-9 can add too.
I’d classify their romance as insta-love/lust that somehow ended up working out pretty well. I wasn’t overly happy with how quickly these two got together and I will say I was a bit disappointed we didn’t get to see or spend time with Noah’s son. Though I understand why he was out of the picture. The man wants to keep his family safe while he tries to discover who’s out to kill him and his partner.
Explosive Forces was more suspenseful and lighter on the romance, but I enjoyed it. I liked watching these two try to figure out who was framing Noah. The suspense was nicely done. Keeping me on my toes and kept turning those pages to find out what would happen next.
Ayres has definitely climbed on my “must read” list with this phenomenal series. I’m relishing each and every novel in the K-9 Rescue series which gives us a touch of danger, loyal canine companions, fierce heroines, and tantalizing heroes.
This book had a slightly different slant to previous in the series but was still an enjoyable read. It quite literally starts with our heroine Carly saving the life of Arson Investigator Noah, and his trained explosives dog and partner Harley. It's a fiery encounter in more ways than one as this couple share a combustible chemistry that simply overtakes them. If you are looking for a slow burn romance than this is anything but! Yet there's an intense plot and an awful lot of misdirection to wade through but it's fast paced, entertaining and bursting with the kind of sweetness that only a loveable canine can add to the mixture. I felt sorry for Noah as he is a victim in more ways than one and getting anyone to believe his account of events is a thankless task. Now luckily Carly isn't the sort to shy away from danger and her strong independent vibes were very impressive. Plus she doesn't take rubbish from anyone so it was fun seeing her stand up to those who wanted to pigeon hole her at times . The villain felt a tad predictable unfortunately and I'd guessed who it was before the big reveal. However if it's romance you want then this couple hit the ground running and no mistake! Although it's the minute details that make this book such fun with the adorable Harley although if honest I did want to see a little bit more of that. I really enjoyed this book although it's not my favourite in the series but if you enjoy romance and particularly if you are a dog lover then this is well worth reading. This is a voluntary review of an advance reader copy
I didn't enjoy this novel as much as some of the others in the series. Harley was kind of incidental to the story (although having said that, he was fundamental to the start and end, so what I'm saying is that he didn't feature much in the middle).
Noah is an arson investigator, kind of a cross between a fireman and a policeman. Carly is a former model who is opening up an arts and crafts shop with exclusive designs. One night while finalising her display prior to opening she hears a dog whining. When she goes to investigate she finds a guy, Noah, unconscious in a deserted warehouse with a dog tied up beside him. Just as she tries to untie the dog the warehouse catches fire and she has to rescue both Noah and his dog, Harley.
Noah has no recollection of how he wound up in the warehouse but his boss and colleagues all received a suicide text, there is also damning evidence that Noah started the fire - on compulsory leave and under investigation Noah turns to Carly to understand what happened.
I liked this, heck I like all D.D. Ayres' novels, but TBH I have read this plot before. Arsonist tries to frame someone in retaliation for perceived slight. It also didn't help that I had reviewed another book within the same week which also had an arsonist. I'm not sure that Carly and Noah's shared experiences with previous lovers added much to the plot other than the feeling of massive coincidence, as if only they could understand how the other felt.
Nevertheless, if you haven't read a novel recently about an arsonist trying to frame an innocent man this is a taut, well-written suspense.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book overall, even though I struggled with it in the middle. The starting is really compelling, and different. The ending, well it ends with a sort of HEA. But in the middle I struggled with thisone. I think because, to me, there really was only one reasonable suspect but the middle of the book was really focused on the who-dunnit aspect and there was not real mystery there for me.
I liked Carly and Noah, but I never really felt like I got to know them. There wasn't as much of their couple as I wanted and too much focus on the mystery.
The writing was strong. The characters and dialog were also good, if a little underdeveloped. However, I do think this was the intent of the author, to focus on the story and make the romance more of a secondary part of the story.
I do recommend this book, but with the caveat that it is a little more of a suspense and mystery than a romance and the HEA is not obvious.
Noah is an Arson Investigator with a K9, Harley. He is a single dad. He wakes up in the hospital having lost all memory of the previous night.
Carly is a former model turned business woman. She speaks candidly. She has a bit of trauma in her past. She is working in her soon to open shop when she hears a dog bark. When she goes to investigate, she finds Noah knocked out with his dog glued to his side. When the building catches on fire, she and the dog drag him out.
Noah is set up to take the fall for multiple fires and a murder. Carly tries to help him out and gets caught in the crossfire.
I wanted more interaction between Carly and Noah. It was easy to figure out who the arsonist was but interesting to see how he’d be caught.
It took me longer than normal to get through this book. I’d pick it up for a little while, easily get distracted because the story wasn’t holding my attention, and put it down to do something else. The story seemed to drag a lot, and I just wasn’t invested in the characters. I skimmed some parts. I did love Harley.
This book just didn't do it for me. This series has been so good to this point--action-filled scenes, hot romances, all tied together with professional K-9 units. But this book didn't click. The main characters were annoying, mostly with their "I-can't-control-myself" sexual scenes. Hey, you're grown-ups and don't have to act like horny teenagers, especially when the consequences are so dire (meaning Noah could have been caught and accused of witness tampering). Not to mention the danger Noah was putting Carly in when he seemed to lead the bad guy right to her home. Sheesh. Yes, my interest was captured in finding out the identity of the arsonist, but the ending seemed a little too rushed and pat. Not my favorite, but I'll still continue with this series and this author. You can't have a hit every time.
Action packed, scorching hot, and cute canines to boot! I'm loving this series from DD Ayres.
So, Carly's life? It's just gone up in flames. Literally. Her store catches on fire and there's one man to blame...the one she rescued from the store next door. The one everyone thinks is behind that very fire. After meeting him, though, something's not adding up and she's quickly pulled into his life and search for the person trying to frame him for arson.
Carly's fiery, sassy, a vegetarian* (woohoo!) and goes after what she wants. She's also a new business owner and trying to help others get ahead in life. And the hero? Noah's all sexy alpha male with a canine partner-- who was so freaking cute! He's a single daddy, good at his job, and just all around yummy.
The chemistry between them was incredible. There was just something between them that set all their little lusty bits to blazing. lol It's pretty much an insta-love/lust/like but it somehow managed to not feel that way. Pretty impressive, I think.
Explosive Forces landed a bit more on the suspense side of things and was lighter on the romance but oh I enjoyed it and watching these to try to figure out who was being framing him for arson and attempted suicide. I do wish there'd been just a bit more of the two together romance-wise as well as him with his son (I love those single daddies) but it was a good time none the less and definitely had me invested. I read this sucker in less than 24 hours and lately it's been taking me 4-5 days for similar length books. So... Ayres definitely had me hooked and loving it.
**one note to authors writing vegetarians... McDonald's french fries aren't vegetarian friendly. Total sadness but, yeah, they're coated in meat broth. *sigh*
Carly Reese has given up her career as a supermodel to return to Fort Worth to open a boutique featuring hand made objects made by the women who got no credit for the fancy work they do on high fashion. She is prepping for her grand opening when she hears a dog in the empty story next door. While investigating she finds an unconscious man and a dog tied to a pillar. As she is trying to free the dog, a fire starts. Now it is up to Carly to save both the man and the dog.
Noah Glover and his K-9 Harley are arson investigators but someone is trying to make it look like he is a suicidal arsonist. Without Carly's intervention, the real arsonist would have succeeded. But now Noah has to clear his name and save his reputation. Since the fire ruined her boutique, Carly also has an incentive to track down the real arsonist.
The two of them are attracted but it isn't wise for a witness - Carly - to get involved with a suspect - Noah. Nonetheless, a romance begins. And the arsonist isn't willing to give up his plans to ruin Noah. Now that Carly is in the picture, he has another possible lever on Noah.
This story was fast-paced and had some really chilling moments before Carly and Noah got to their "happily ever after."
Ms Ayes always provides readers with captivating characters; intensely riveting plots and some of the most combustible romance money can buy. So is it any wonder that Explosive Forces ignites the flames of passion while telling a gripping and suspenseful tale of danger, mystery and evil intent!
Another fabulous book is sure to keep readers coming back for more of the fierce, Alpha men portrayed in each story and their trusty K-9 sidekicks.
++ Arc provided by the publisher, via NetGalley, for an honest review ++ I usually like plots like this one but I didn’t feel connected with these characters or the story, even though I’m not saying I didn’t like them. The suspense plot didn’t interest me and the sexual attraction between hero and heroine was too fast for my taste. But they’re interesting characters and who doesn’t enjoy a story with a dog like Harley or a little boy?
Even though Noah could be a grouchy man I fell in love with him, "...he folded his arms and stood his ground, looking imposing and unapologetic. “You got something to say? Or did you just come by to get a good look at my junk?” Noah is always up for a certain game, “we’ll see.” He waggled his brows at her. “Want to play Hide the Salami?” I enjoyed this book, Noah was just so sexy.
The video killed it for me. It more than proved that our hero couldn't have done what was said, and his own supervisor discounted it and said it was the DA's problem to solve...huh...no...you were the investigator. Too weak. Harley the wunderdog was what saved a star.
I received a copy of this book in my Fresh Fiction subscription box.
I read this book when I was between other reads, and it's my first book from this author. I don't have anything I glaringly disliked about the book-- it was a fast read and the suspense element was nice. But there also wasn't anything I glaringly loved about the book. The couple does run very hot very fast, and the sexual tension (while hot) was a little one-sided/too rushed for me.
Much like the last book in this series, I found this one to be very slow moving. The constant change of view point from chapter to chapter was annoying. I hated and skimmed over the chapters from the "other" person's view point as I found them confusing and unnecessary.
This book was just okay for me. Nothing great...but not horrible. I definitely wouldn't read it again though.
I am a huge fan of DD Ayres. I have loved every other book she has out in this series but this one.. it just didn't do it for me. I have started it, put it down and gone back to it multiple times since I first started in in November. I just can't get into it. That pains me to say, but it is what it is.
Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I really enjoy the K9 aspects of this series but there wasn't a lot of it in this story. The main guy, Noah is a single dad and a firefighter. Carly used to be a supermodel and has come home to form a dream boutique. They are strong characters with integrity. There is almost no connection to the other books in the K9-9 Rescue series. So this could definitely be read as a standalone, or out of order.
Noah gets tangled into a serious mess right away. Carly steps in to help and gets pulled into it also. Carly's business is fascinating. Both of them are good people who work to make things better for everyone. Noah's co-workers were not as supportive as I would expect though. Both of their families were great and added to the story overall with good supporting characters.
Noah and Carly have a quick attraction which goes way too fast. It's not very realistic with the romance and a few of Noah's other actions would not be smart professionally. I know, emotions were high in a dangerous situation. It was just too quick for me. Overall, Explosive Forces was fast, frightening with suspense and sexy. Narration: Jeffrey Kafer is one of those narrators I always enjoy. He handles everything well with appropriate voices and brings an emotional performance. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.
I have adored each book in the K9 series to date, and whilst I liked Explosive Forces, I didn't love it like I have the previous books.
It may be just me, but I didn't feel the connection between Noah and Carly. This may be because they didn't spend that much time together in the scheme of things. Don't get me wrong, the arson/firefighter part of the story was very interesting (I am a volo firefighter) but it took a bit away from our lovelies.
I am not going to lie though, I think Harley is by far my favourite of the K9s so far. I loved that he wasn't the perfect service/guard dog. He has a little bit of mischief in him, and I adored that. Made me feel a bit better about the way my dog behaves lol
I did like Explosive Forces but for me it just fell a little bit flat compared to the other books. But I am looking forward to whatever D.D Ayres brings us next.
Explosive Forces is the 5th book in the K-9 Rescue Series. I have read only one other book in the series and can attest to the fact that they can be read as stand-alone books. Explosive Forces was fun, intriguing and scorchingly hot, in more ways than one. It’s the story of Carly Harrington-Reese and Noah Glover. They meet under the worst of circumstances. Noah who just happens to be an arson investigator is found unconconscious in a burning building by model turned business owner Carly. The circumstances surrounding Noah’s situation lead to an investigation that points to Noah as a serial arsonist but there is much more to the story. In addition, Carly becomes the one person that he should stay away from if he wants to clear his name and find the real culprit.
After a funny and awkward confrontation in the hospital, Noah and Carly realize that they must satisfy their sexual hunger. That satisfaction creates a magnetic pull between the two of them that can’t be denied. They each have some baggage that they must toss aside to truly get themselves in a place where they can really explore their feelings for each other. Things get complicated as the real arsonist inserts himself into their lives and makes it difficult for Noah to know who to trust. D.D. Ayres does an excellent job of hiding the arsonist in plain sight. And although the subject of arson is serious, most of the book and the characters are actually rather funny. Noah and Carly have a refreshing honesty with each other that is hard to find amongst people these days.
I truly enjoyed this book. It was both suspenseful and entertaining. The chemistry between Noah and Carly was explosive and the mystery was thrilling throughout. Plus, there is even a cute explosives dog named Harley that will make you love dogs if you don’t love them already. I may have to revisit the other books in the series that I haven’t read.
**Received a copy from St. Martin’s Paperbacks and voluntarily reviewed the book.**
Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review.
At #5 in this series Explosive Forces just isn't up to the level of the previous books. Again we have a story of how dogs are used as service animals. In this case the K-9 is an explosives sniffing dog. Harley is wonderful in his part, but we don't see nearly enough of him. I wish I could say the same for his human counterparts in this story. They just don't bring a whole lot to the story. Well, it is also a big problem that the plot has holes big enough to drive a Mack truck through. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.
Carly is a former high fashion model who is soon to open a upscale boutique in Fort Worth, TX. Leaving late one night she hears a dog whining in the vacant shop next door. When she investigates, she find the dog tied up to a post and his "owner" passed out on the floor. Then she notices the smoke and fire and things get desperate real fast.
Noah comes to in the hospital and his boss is telling him he tried to commit suicide by fire. Not Noah, he is a former cop turned arson investigator, but there is evidence. Noah now needs to figure out who wants him, not only dead, but disgraced. His first step is to find Carly, retrieve Harley and get her to help him put all the pieces together.
This is the first book I have read by D.D. Ayres and while I liked the characters well enough nothing really caught my attention. The instra love has always bothered me in Romantic Suspense novels because I wonder if people in the real world would be able to make it last after everything slows down and they are able to think. I like that the author wrote little section with what was going thought the fire bugs head. Its easy to figure out who the fire bug is. The story starts off with a bang but soon slows down almost to a crawl and Slowly picks up again. I had to force myself to keep reading until it picked up again. The author add light moments with Carly feisty attitude and her Aunt. This is book 5 in the series and readers won't get lost it is a stand alone novel with a few tie in from the other books.
For the most part it was an ok romantic suspense novel with beautiful people falling inlove with each other. Grammar, Spelling and editing were fine. I think the editor could have helped with the pace of the book. However this might just be a personal choice.
Explosive Forces by D.D. Ayres was another winner in my opinion. The first chapter grabbed me and I didn't put it down until I had finished it.
Ms. Ayres writes such complex characters that I always get pulled into the story to get to know them better. The plot is fast paced; and although we meet the bad guy early in the book, there are enough twists that I had to keep turning the pages to see what he had planned next for Noah and Carly. Noah and Carly's connection was slow to develop but became combustible as they got to know each other. Noah's K9 partner, Harley, was adorable. Harley was trained to find explosives; but he also did a fantastic job of finding Carly when the time came.
Ms. Ayres never disappoints me. I can always count on a romantic suspense story that has action, passion, K9 partners and characters that I want to know more about. I can hardly wait for the next one in this series.
I received an ARC from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
One night, Carly hears something similar to a dog barking in the empty store next to hers. When she goes to investigate, she finds there really is a dog barking...Beside his obviously drunk and unconscious owner. When a fire erupts, Carly decides to save the unconscious man only to find out he was trying to commit suicide by fire...Or was he?
I don't know what happened. I simply couldn't get into the groove of the story. It felt like watching something through an opaque window. Or as if something was keeping me detached. Maybe it was the fact I felt nothing about the two leads or the fact the two had no chemistry whatsoever (even that last scene felt like an afterthought to tie the "romance" with a nice little bow). Or maybe it was the fact there was no "threat", no feeling of immigrant danger.
The entire story was lukewarm at best only showing stirrings of intensity from chapter 27 to 30. But by then it was too late.
Another K-9 romantic suspense story with great human and canine characters!
Carly Harrington-Reese saves the life of Noah Glover and his K-9 fire/explosive sniffing partner, Harley. She then gets caught up in solving the mystery of who tried to kill Noah and Harley and just why anyone would want to. With an arsonist on their heels, an arson investigator being fed erroneous clues and Carly’s business to get ready to open there is little time for Carly and Noah to spend exploring their attraction for one another…but they did find some and when they did…oh my! I think one of my favorite parts of the book had to do with kisses and the variety of them that exist in the world – might even want to google to see if there are more ;)
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC. This is my honest review.
I was lucky enough to have gotten a copy of the book through NetGalley in exchange for a review which I am happy to provide. This is not the first book by D.D. Ayres that I read and I was really looking forward to getting started. Now I liked the characters and the storyline but somehow I never connected to the book as much as I had with previous ones, I found myself wanting to skip ahead which is never a good sign. It did have mystery and suspense and of course I love the K-9 aspect and some steamy romance. Even if you are not familiar with the series you can still enjoy it without getting lost. Since I am a fan of the Author I will certainly look forward to any future books in the series.
I was really turned off by the main female character at the beginning -- she's very uppity and lacks empathy, and unfortunately the relationship wasn't developed beyond physical attraction. It was also really annoying how unintelligent and clueless the characters were. I love arson books and books with dogs, but this one was ultimately a slow trudge through.
An explosive novel with romance and suspense. Carly is a boutique owner and when on fire rescued by a K9 guarding a firefighter. Noah is a firefighter and is in trouble but he teams op with Carly to find an arsonist and find much more .
