Sophie Newton is determined to prove herself to her father, who insists she could never run a successful business. She opens a beachside taco stand called The Sandy Tortilla and plans to make her own way, one burrito at a time.
When she loses her summer help, Sophie rushes to find somebody to help take orders. She finds that somebody in Montgomery Winters, a struggling actor from LA. Mont takes the job; the money's useful, though he finds that his curvy boss is what really keeps him around.
As Sophie and Mont work together, they discover an intense attraction between them. But when Mont's agent calls him about a career-making audition, he decides he must pursue the opportunity, even though he can't get Sophie out of his head. Now, Sophie must choose between chasing after the man she's falling in love with and the business she's fought so hard to build.
3-time USA Today bestselling author Elana Johnson writes adult contemporary beach romance. She is the author of over 130 books across two names, and there's nothing better than sun, sand, and swoon-worthy kisses! Unless it's a sweet-and-sexy cowboy - read those under her pen name of Liz Isaacson. Or an emotional, heartfelt women's fiction novel - read those under her pen name of Jessie Newton.
I have to get this off my chest: "The Sandy Tortilla" is not a good name for a taco stand. Every time it came up, I wanted to check my teeth for grit. Also, everything about that taco stand was stupid. Sophie has been nursing that thing along for years and years and just recently got a high-profile plug bringing the customers in and she still can't last through the winter without taking part-time work waitressing? Honey, it might have been fun for a while, but this is not a "dream" in any way, shape, or form. There's no career here and hanging on to this millstone is ruining your life.
So the first half of this story revolves around Sophie and Mont working together in the taco stand nightmare. Sophie shows her keen business sense by vastly overpaying him. And then "sticking to the deal" by refusing to pay him less once he develops a conscience. Sophie needs some remedial business courses, starting with "don't pay employees $50/hour". Taco quibble aside, this section kind of, sort of, worked. Mont is a good guy and he's totally into Sophie. Plus, his dream is as ridiculous as hers (trying to be an action movie star). So them working out how they could possibly make things work (while being tied to two different locations 12-hour drive apart) if/when they fell for each other was mildly intriguing.
And then things got silly. At one point I remember thinking "this is why you can't have nice relationships" when Sophie went completely immature and dragged her insecurities out beyond all reason. So very many of their problems could have been short-circuited if either one had bothered to sit down and talk to the other. Oh, and stop "surprising" each other with life-changing decisions!
This was a weak three stars until . And then the stupid ramped into the stratosphere. I'm keeping it at two stars out of fond memories when the taco stand was my biggest problem. I almost docked it to one, though, when
Sigh.
A note about Chaste: I debated this one. There's no on-screen explicit sex but these two are both all about noticing the hot body parts. And imagining the body parts. And they do eventually have the sex and Johnson just pulls back so we don't see it. So it's a questionable call.
A note about Missing Faith: At one point I could have sworn these were two virgins blushing over maybe having sex some day for all the hemming and hawing they were doing about "will we, won't we". Being all coy about sex in your mid-20s definitely needs explicit justification. But no, Sophie had a fiancé who lived with her and we know Mont's past relationship was sexual, too, based on events described (uh, not that way). So these two doing the timid virgin dance just came across as awkward and wrong.
I love food trucks, but haven't really thought about the work that goes into running one. Sophie's sounds amazing and I was salivating over tacos throughout the book. I was also longing to lounge on the beach with the ocean breezes tossing my hair while I ate that taco.
There was a simmering attraction between Sophie and Mont, yet they each had their secrets and reservations that held them back a bit. I loved watching them gradually peel those layers away, revealing strong and determined characters that a reader could relate to.
I was emotionally invested and really cared about how their story would end. I loved this story, with its slightly sad undertone and overall glimmers of hope and longing.
Content: mild-moderate romance elements (steamy clean chemistry, with some innuendo and kissing; a fade-to-black scene that stayed clean)
This book was perfect for the end of summer. Set in a cozy beach town, I could practically hear the waves breaking and smell the ocean in the air.
Sophie and Mont are two very strong characters. I just loved Sophie's determination and desire to make her taco stand a success. Mont is equally determined to succeed with his acting career. They were also so insecure in what they were doing- trying to prove themselves. It made them seem real and vulnerable.
Watching Sophie and Mont dance around the growing attraction between them was so entertaining. As they get to know each other, you could see and feel their minds shifting a bit to include the other person. Choices that were so obvious before didn't seem so clear anymore.
I thought this book was a lot of fun. I enjoyed it from beginning to end and I'll be on the watch for more from this author!
Content: Intimacy before marriage, no details- fade to black. Innuendo.
UNTIL SUMMER ENDS was an enjoyable romance with plenty of chemistry between the characters. It was full of small-town charm, friendships, and some sizzling romance. Recommended to readers who enjoy adult contemporary romance.
I really loved Sophie and Mont! They were such interesting characters and very different from each other - bringing a nice balance to their relationship. Sophie is so focused on her taco shack and keeping her heart safe. Mont was much more laid-back while taking a break from the LA crowd and waiting to see if he could land a larger role in the film industry. There were so many swoon-worthy and rather humorous moments as well as sweet ones between these two. I also really enjoyed quite a lot of the dialogue between them.
The story was engaging the whole way through and, as a reader, I definitely felt the sparks and chemistry jumping off the page. There was also enough tension created by the characters' different dreams and goals as well as their past baggage to keep things from being too smooth. I would have liked the secondary characters to be better fleshed out and for it to have been cleaner, but that would be it.
In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a fun read! Plenty of sizzle without it taking over and allowing for some depth to the story. I loved the main characters and the very sweet ending.
Content: Innuendo, one closed-door love scene, heavy making out. Source: Received a complimentary copy from the author, which did not affect my review in any way.

I love a good love story and this book fit that description. The book is basically about a woman, Sophie, who owns her own taco stand. Her stand is on the beach and caters to tourists. In need of hired help she turns to a man she finds on the beach. From the moment they meet, attraction and sparks fly between them.
I really liked the characters of Sophie and Mont. Both have insecurities from past relationships and their career path. Mont is a struggling actor looking for his big break and Sophie was told that she would not succeed in business. They are a perfect blend. They give each other strength and encouragement as friends until they allow themselves to move into something more. I liked the instant attraction and that the romance didn't feel rushed. I felt like it progressed at a good pace.
The book has a fade to black love scene. It also has them thinking and wishing for more intimacy. I felt fairly comfortable with the amount of steam. I would recommend this book to adults to read.
Favourite quotes: "I like lists," she said, her wall coming up, and fast. "And maps, and plans, and I don't know if I can do this without any of them."
"You can," he insisted. "Because you have me."
Oh, I fell in love with this book!! I loved the whole premise of the actor trying to make it big in Hollywood and the total opposite of that -a girl who owns and operates a taco stand! Such an original storyline! The romance was hot (a little steamer than what we're used to from this author but fade-to-black so I didn't feel I had to skip over anything or feel uncomfortable) as was Mont (oh my to meet him in real life!). Elana Johnson's writing just keeps getting better and better! I highly recommend this book. I'm excited to see that this is book 1 in what promises to be a series. I hope we will be reading about Lucy and Blaine's love story next...
This was a sweet romance it wasn’t hot and heavy with sex scenes, but it had tons of chemistry between the two protagonists, and I loved that. If there are no scenes with lots of chemistry between the main characters, then to me all is lost and the story just goes flat.
Don’t get me wrong, I love good sex scenes too, but I felt this story was more about the emotions, the chemistry, and the feelings involved between and within the two main characters. I think the sex scenes would have marred with all of the chemistry and feelings that needed to take place in order for the story to flow and the reader could better understand the characters and their drives and needs to be successful.
Sophie and Mont are two characters that just leapt off the pages for me. They both sparkled and shined for me and it wasn’t any one thing that grabbed my attention, it was the little things that did it for me.
I loved how Mont loved to see Sophie blush. I don’t mean blushing because she’s humiliated and crying hysterically. I mean she’s blushing because he said something sexual to her that made her blush, or he looked at her with heat in his gaze that made her blush. Those moments really meant a lot to me. I’m sure they meant a lot to Sophie and Mont as well.
I loved Sophie’s drive and determination to make her business thrive and be successful. I loved how passionate she was about her cooking and keeping her business a float on her own. I loved how Mont respected her drive and determination, but wanted to help her incorporate balance in her life so she wasn’t all work and no play.
I loved Mont’s desire to be successful. The reader got to see how painful the process can be when someone is chasing their dreams, and failure is a steady confidant during the process. The reader understands Mont’s desires, frustrations, fear of hoping too much, and yet not wanting to let go of hope because he just HAS to get his big break soon. I felt his fears and frustrations; I got a little teary,
I love, love, love the name of her business, The Sandy Tortilla. I just thought it was such a clever name for a beach side business. It’s an appealing name that makes me smile.
This was a great book with a lot of depth. It was funny, it was a light read and it was a fast read as well. I hope that any readers out there take a chance on this book. It was just so good.
These characters were SO much fun to read. I loved their romantic tension and the way they treated each other and also the way they worked so well together. She needs someone to help her run her dream taco stand on the beach and he is a struggling actor hoping to make it big, but 'until summer ends', he offers to help her in the stand. I liked that the characters were deep and had their own struggles and life events happening because it made them so real and likable.
Fun, quick read-perfect for reading at the beach! (I was just dreaming about the beach on a cold, rainy day....)
I don’t really want to review this book. I may be in a winter blues funk which makes me less likely to enjoy a book. I really couldnt get into this. I don’t understand Sophie or her personality and i found her insufferable. Rating it for what it is, I would say if you like Elana Johnson’s writings, you will probably like this. Its a sweet, closed door romance with a lot of drama and miscommunication. If that is up your alley, grab this book. Spice: closed door Language: none that i could remember Religion: low….1 page had a prayer maybe one or two other little things but no scripture quotes.
Oh this was so cute! I had a good time reading this, all of their banter and quirky remarks and sassy comments. The food things and their extended family and the whole setting made me feel homesick, or rather, hiraeth. It wad quite adorable! I enjoyed it!
The plot is good and intriguing, the characters were interesting and the end was perfect. But, i didn't like some things in this book, i will keep them to myself because it was a clean romance and those are not easy to find and still a progressing genre.
This is sweet easy read. It is well written, romantic and intriguing. the characters are interesting and well developed. This will keep your interest until the last page. I received this book as a gift and voluntarily give this review.
Loved this sweet, sexy but clean romance story. Can a book be sexy without sex scenes? Some how Elana does just that. This would be a wonderful summer read.
First off, I've always loved Johnson's easy to read writing style. She draws you in and lets your imagination create the pictures. There isn't any author intrusion to throw you out, and I appreciate that.
I could totally relate to Sophie and her little OCD neurosis. Seriously, there were so many things she did that I've done myself. Falling in love with someone you know won't be staying around is amazingly hard on someone who needs to feel like they are in control of their future. All those emotions and challenges are there, and Sophie works through them one by one. Working through the process with her was therapeutic.
Mont is also complex and fascinating. He's a giver. He's determined to make it big so he can help pay for his father's medical bills. Sure, he's doing what he loves, but when it comes down to the big chance or staying with Sophie, he has real reasons for the hard choice. I like that. It isn't some silly little thing that's pulling him away from what he wants.
In the end they both have to take chances and make a few changes.
I give Until Summer Ends a 4.5!
1-5 scale and what it means: 1: I couldn’t even finish it / just plain bad 2: I hope I didn’t pay for this / disappointing 3: I didn’t hate it, but it was still missing something / forgettable but inoffensive 3.5: On the line between good and ok / like, not love 4: Solid mind candy / worth reading 4.5: So very close to perfection! / must read 5: I could not put it down and I’m still thinking about it! / a true treasure
Let me start by saying I have a love/hate relationship with romance novels. I'm way too impatient, in the background yelling, "Kiss her already!" That being said this was a very sweet book. I enjoyed every moment of it and the impatient reader in me couldn't put it down wanting to get to that moment where they finally do kiss and fall in love and live happily ever after. I was into the dramatic moments and conflicts begging the characters not to let it ruin their potential romance. To me, that makes for a great book. I was invested in their story from the beginning.
I really liked Sophie and I completely understood her, her motivations and her fears. She was coming from heartbreak and nervous about stepping in a new situation but feeling the attraction to Mont. I've been there. And Mont was lovable from the beginning. I thought something more was up with him and the whole name thing. I felt there could have been more just to give him a little more depth but he was all and all a good guy. The perfect guy to meet following a heart break. I like that the story wasn't just about romance and love but following your dreams and how much you are willing to give up for the one you love.
This book is a perfect summer read. It is set on the beach and all I could think about was how great it would be to be on the beach reading this book enjoying the sun and the surf like the characters. Not to mention, I couldn't stop thinking about tacos.
**I was given an advanced copy of this book to review**
This book follows Sophie Newton whose running The Sandy Tortilla and finds herself in need of a assistant when her current worker breaks a leg and she searches the beach to find a handsome guy blowing up balloons and begs him to work for her offering ridiculous amounts of money to do so. Montgomery Winters the handsome balloon blower is taking a break from LA and waiting tables only to get lured into assisting Sophie who he finds an attraction to. Sophie and Montgomery both have deep secrets and aren't willing to let them go so quickly but they find something in each other.
I enjoyed watching as both Sophie and Mont grew within themselves and each other and didn't let past relationships deem their current relationship. Mont who was betrayed by his ex-girlfriend Amber who seemed more content hooking up with an old buddy of Mont's to Sophie dealing with her ex-fiance Clint who made Sophie feel she wasn't good enough cause she loved her taco stand.
Definitely a great book for those who love a good clean romance. This one kept me hoping these two would find their way to each other without loosing sight of what they wanted in life. Can't wait to see what is next in this series!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really liked the whole vibe of this book. It was kind of fun that Sophie is really a typical Type A, she's driven while running her own taco truck on the beach. But Mont is really your typical beach bum. He can't be on time to save his life and he really doesn't have a typical job to speak of. There is undeniable chemistry between the two for the whole book though.
I really liked the plot of this one. I liked the romance angle. It's a clean romance, although I didn't love the way that Mont thought about Sophie in his head. This one was a bit on the line of clean romance for me, it doesn't talk about having sex really, although you know that the characters do at one point. I did like that there wasn't swearing in it.
I liked the characters. They were really well written. I liked that Sophie was predictable, to a point, and then I didn't have any idea what was going to come next for her. Mont is a bit of a character throughout the whole book. You don't know his real name, or what he does for a living for a good chunk of the book. He freely admits that he's aspiring to be an actor but the rest of his life is kind of a mystery until he unfolds it.
This is a cute book that I really enjoyed reading.
I was sent an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was an enjoyable read, and it was clean too! Sophie is a woman with issues from her past that impede her present. While I know many people have a past and sometimes those issues cloud their judgement, I wanted to ask her what she was thinking about running away at various times throughout the book. We all have to deal with our past, but Sophie kept running away.
Mont is the hunky man in the picture, but don't be fooled, he has his own issues too including running from his past (including his name) and trying to find his path in life.
Despite the baggage they both bring to the table, I enjoyed their slower paced relationship with its ups and downs. It made them seem more down to earth and approachable. While Mont may be an actor seeking the role of a lifetime, he was no different than anyone else.
I thought the name of Sophie's food stand was ingenious - The Sandy Tortilla - because it was on the beach and served Mexican food. I'm always impressed by food trucks/stands and what they can accomplish in such a small space.
I loved this story about a food stand operator and an actor that really wants to make the big time. Both of them have been hurt in the past and aren't looking for anything in the relationship department. They meet on the beach and things begin to change. I loved the part the light house played in the story and the complicated mess that happens toward the end. Such sweet people and such a sweet ending! I highly recommend this to anyone who loves clean romance, good Mexican food and small town living.
Elana Johnson has given us another winner with realistic characters, a beautiful northern California beach setting, and all the elements of a great romance. Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down and wanted it to continue when I got to the end. I loved the chemistry, dynamic and repartee between Sophie Newton, owner of The Sandy Tortilla, a beach taco stand, and Montgomery Winters, an actor taking a break from LA. This is a perfect summer getaway read for fans of contemporary romance.
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A Sweet and Fun Loving Story. Sometimes a person has toblose one relationship to find the one that is truly supposed to be your happily ever after. And for Sophie that was Montgomery Winters. Such an adorable Couple. Please don't cheat yourselves and pick up a copy of this book.
This is a beautiful romance about second chances, and happily ever after. Elana vividly paints a picture of the main characters, Sophie and Monty with the twists and turns of their romance. I loved Redwood Bay and all the supporting characters. All of this brought the story together. If you like sweet, clean, and wholesome romances then this is the book for you. An advance review copy was given to me and my opinion is my own.
