Tony Parsons (born 6 November 1953) is a British journalist broadcaster and author. He began his career as a music journalist on the NME, writing about punk music. Later, he wrote for The Daily Telegraph, before going on to write his current column for the Daily Mirror. Parsons was for a time a regular guest on the BBC Two arts review programme The Late Show, and still appears infrequently on the successor Newsnight Review; he also briefly hosted a series on Channel 4 called Big Mouth.

In the sequel to The Murder Bag must DC Max Wolf hunt down a serial killer who have killed an entirely family except the youngest son who the killer has kidnapped.
I found the first book brutal this book is even worse. If there is something I have a hard time reading about is it cases where children are involved. Gone, Baby Gone, by Dennis Lehane is an excellent example of a book that I had a hard time reading. This one was also very hard to read.
Tony Parsons has once again written an excellent crime novel. Max, his five year old daughter Scout and their dog Stan are back and to be perfectly honest, part of the appeal of the book for me is what a wonderful father Max is, yes there are moments when he is a bit lost, like when his daughter needs a princess dress, but besides situations like that he is a man trying his best to take care of his daughter and that is why this case becomes so personal for him. Somewhere out there is a missing four-year-old boy almost the same age as his daughter.
There were some moments I thought were a bit peculiar, namely when the cops went into places without backup. They got a tip, they have an address and they barge in without waiting for backup and everything goes haywire. That Max does things that get him hurt I can understand, he's a bit of a loose cannon sometimes. But here we have him and some colleagues and his superior just barging in. Before that, they had done the same thing, in a camp with romanies and gotten into a problem. Besides that, the book was really good, almost as good as the first one. But as I said before I don't like cases with children involved and I would rather not read that kind of book.

I think I am going to be the lone voice of dissent on this one, but I really didn’t enjoy this read at all. Four members of a family are wiped out in one night in a brutal slaying and the murderer has abducted the four year old son of the family. It is up to DC Max and his fellow CID team members to investigate. Now the plot itself is pretty good, it kept me interested to know how it would turn out, but there are things I really didn’t like about this book. Max is a detective constable, not at the top of the pecking order of CID, but it really bugged me the way his superior officers seemed to defer to him all the time, almost as if he was the lead detective. There is a lot of action in this story, some of it quite bloody and Tony Parsons seems to take no prisoners with his characters, but a lot of that action comes about because of the, some might call maverick and some might call stupid decisions of Max and his team. Going constantly into potentially dangerous situations with just two or three officers pretty soon became a signal that someone was about to get badly hurt. You just knew it was going to go wrong.
I didn’t read the last Max Wolfe but I have read some of the author’s earlier work, which I really liked, and it seemed at times that he couldn’t quite get away from that “lads lit” genre. Every so often Max took a sentimental turn for the worse which just didn’t quite gel with the rest of the story. I can’t finish off without mentioning the fact that Max and his young daughter live in a loft apartment near Smithfield Market – on a detective constable’s salary.

'Fame comes and goes. Infamy lasts forever.'
There is something very cold and dark about The Slaughter Man. Something that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. But don't let that stop you reading this book. If you do, you will have missed out on one hell of a read.
Twisty and twisted, The Slaughter Man reinvokes an old crime, one that has been paid for. Can the perpetrator of that original crime, now aged and dying, somehow be responsible for this new slaughter?
An excellent and thrilling read.

Όσον αφορά την εξέλιξη της υπόθεσης, χωρίς να έχω διαβάσει πολλά αστυνομικά, έχω κάποιες ενστάσεις.
Έως τη 250η σελίδα, ο Parsons χτίζει μία υπόθεση φαινομενικά προβλεπόμενη, χωρίς όμως να έχει δώσει κανένα άλλο στοιχείο ότι το πράγμα δεν είναι έτσι όπως φαίνεται, πέρα από τις εναπομείναντες 100 σελίδες για να υποψιάσει τον αναγνώστη. Έπειτα, μέσα σε αυτές τις 100 σελίδες στριμώχνει ένα σημαντικό για την εξέλιξη storyline το οποίο παρουσιάζει με συνοπτικές διαδικασίες, χωρίς να έχει αφήσει νωρίτερα σημάδια που να προμηνύουν αυτήν την εξέλιξη. Δε λείπουν φυσικά οι ευτυχείς συμπτώσεις, όπως:

I’ve got a big list of authors I want to try and Tony Parsons is one of them and this book didn’t disappoint. After reading a few other books that have been quite disappointing it was great to get back to a good old fashion police murder mystery and I finished this in one day.
I was actually surprised that Max is a DC. I imagined with the story being around him and the events he is involved in that he would be higher up the hierarchy of the police force. This being the first introduction for me of this detective I didn’t know his background and found it interesting to read about him being a single father and how he copes with work and childcare. I spent several years as single mum and I thought this was done really well and quite realistic.
The story itself is quite brutal, it pulls no punches with abducted children, paedophile parties, riots, police being injured, killed and maimed for life. It’s definitely not Midsummer Murders! However I liked again the realism and grittiness of the story.
It’s fast paced even though it takes place over 3 months. The action rarely stops to give the reader breathing space. It’s just an altogether enjoyable read. I can’t wait to go back and read the rest of the series.

This is the second novel featuring DC Max Wolfe, single parent to daughter Scout, who first appeared in, “The Murder Bag.” I enjoyed his first outing, but this is really a huge step up from the first in the series – a really gripping and exciting crime novel, with a fast paced plot and great characters. It is New Years Eve when a family are horrifically killed in a gated community in Highgate, London. The gates are meant to keep the bad people out, but when Max Wolfe confronts the carnage the murderer has left behind, even he is shocked. The mother of the family was an ex-sportswoman, whose beauty, fame and happiness have left behind an online trail of resentment and spite. To complicate matters more, the couples youngest son – just four years old – seems to have been abducted by the killer. Now, Max has to work against the clock to try to locate the missing child, while there is a chance that he is still alive.
The way the family were killed leads Max to a man, nicknamed, “the Slaughter Man,” who is now out of prison after doing his time for wiping out another family more than twenty years before. He is a traveller and the community he lives with are not at all keen to talk to the police, let alone help them. As well as Max Wolfe, there are other characters in the team who we met in the previous book; among them DC Edie Wren and DI Curtis Gane , as well as a whole cast of new characters, including the family of the murdered family and those in the travelling community.
In “The Murder Bag,” I felt that the author concentrated far too much on Max Wolfe’s home life. Here, he gets the balance just right. He humanises Wolfe with his concerns about his daughter, but he concentrates on the crimes, and does so brilliantly. From Highgate cemetery, to travellers camps, through the smug and self-satisfied wealth of the Bishops Avenue and the arrogance of the rich, he takes us on a journey where crimes cast long shadows and not everything is clear cut. I live in North London and recognised many of the places Parsons writes about, which made this novel even more enjoyable. I was thrilled to see that there is a further novel planned featuring Max Wolfe and I look forward to reading it. If you enjoy intelligent, well written crime fiction, then add Max Wolfe to your reading list. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

A gripping, well written book, especially the lovely relationship between Max Wolfe and his daughter Scout. Great police information and knowledge
Sadly did not know that this was the second in the series, so will now read the first.
Why a four star not five, well just sometimes a little far fetched re Max Wolfe position in the police and his survival rate, cannot say more, you will understand if you have read it.

“The Slaughter Man” by Tony Parsons is the sequel to “The Murder Bag” and the next instalment in the series. I read The Murder Bag and the short story “Dead Time”, A DCI Max Wolfe Short Story (Max Wolfe #1.5).
In The Slaughter Man, DC Max Wolfe, in London on New Year’s Day is investigating the gruesome murder of a very well off family and the disappearance of the four year old son. This crime thriller/police procedural weaves a story that is exciting and gripping from page one, but at the heart of this novel, it all about what you would do to protect the ones you hold most dearest to you in a world that can be cruel.

I really enjoyed this novel, the characters and drama, and look forward to the next in series “The Hanging Club” in 2016.

Κι αν και δεν έχω διαβάσει το πρώτο βιβλίο της σειράς -πράγμα που σκοπεύω να κάνω πολύ, πολύ άμεσα-, αντιλαμβάνομαι όλους εκείνους τους λόγους που ο Parsons θεωρείται ένα από τα πιο δυνατά χαρτιά των ημερών μας στο χώρο της αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας, όπως και τους λόγους που οι περιπέτειες του Μαξ Γουλφ έχουν αγαπηθεί τόσο πολύ κερδίζοντας τις καρδιές του αναγνωστικού κοινού, παρά την σκληρότητα που τις χαρακτηρίζει.
Μια ευκατάστατη οικογένεια, οι δύο γονείς και τα δύο μεγαλύτερα παιδιά τους, βρίσκονται δολοφονημένοι στο σπίτι τους, ξημερώματα Πρωτοχρονιάς, ενώ ο μικρότερος γιος της οικογένειας -μόλις τεσσάρων ετών- έχει εξαφανιστεί και όλα μαρτυρούν πως έχει απαχθεί από τον δολοφόνο της οικογένειάς του. Την υπόθεση αναλαμβάνει ο Μαξ Γουλφ, και τα πράγματα γίνονται εξαιρετικά περίπλοκα για εκείνον όταν το όπλο του φόνου τον οδηγεί σε έναν κατά συρροήν δολοφόνο που είχε γίνει γνωστός με το όνομα "Χασάπης", πριν από τριάντα χρόνια, και που σήμερα είναι ετοιμοθάνατος και, θεωρητικά, πολύ μακριά από την φυσική κατάσταση που θα του επέτρεπε να έχει επιστρέψει στη δολοφονική του δράση. Κάτω από το βάρος της πίεσης που του ασκούν η οικογένεια των θυμάτων αλλά και ο Τύπος, ο Μαξ πρέπει να παλέψει ενάντια στο χρόνο για να μπορέσει να εμποδίσει τον δολοφόνο να βλάψει το αγόρι αλλά και να φτάσει στη δικιά του πόρτα απειλώντας τη ζωή του με τρόπους που ούτε καν θα ήθελε να φανταστεί.
Ο τελευταίος ενάμισης χρόνος έφερε στην ελληνική αγορά πολλά μεταφρασμένα βιβλία που είχαν ως κεντρικό τους άξονα κακοποιήσεις ή δολοφονίες παιδιών. Πολλές οι συζητήσεις που προκάλεσαν, πολλά τα σχόλια που ακούστηκαν, άλλοι φανέρωσαν μεγαλύτερη ευαισθησία απέναντι στο θέμα κι άλλοι μικρότερη, όμως ένα είναι το βέβαιο σε κάθε περίπτωση. Πρέπει να έχεις πολύ γερό στομάχι για να μπορέσεις να διαβάσεις μια ιστορία που εμπεριέχει τέτοια στοιχεία, μα πρέπει να έχει ακόμα μεγαλύτερη ικανότητα, ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας, να χειριστεί το θέμα του με τέτοιο τρόπο που δεν θα το ωραιοποιήσει, με κίνδυνο να το γελοιοποιήσει, αλλά ούτε και να πάει στο απέναντι άκρο έτσι ώστε με επιτηδευμένο τρόπο να οδηγήσει τον αναγνώστη σε μια περιγραφική διαδρομή ακροτήτων που θα τον σοκάρουν απλά για να τον σοκάρουν. Εδώ ακριβώς, λοιπόν, εντοπίζει κανείς τη "μαγκιά" του Parsons. Στο ότι καταφέρνει να είναι σκληρός και ρεαλιστής χωρίς, όμως, να σοκάρει απλά για να σοκάρει, μα περισσότερο για να εντείνει το σασπένς, σε ένα πρώτο επίπεδο, και να μας κάνει να προβληματιστούμε σε ένα δεύτερο.
Η ιστορία αυτή καθεαυτή δεν έχει κάτι το πρωτότυπο, ούτε κάτι εξεζητημένο. Η συνταγή της κεντρικής ιδέας είναι κάτι πολυχρησιμοποιημένο που δεν μας εντυπωσιάζει. Όμως, όπως έχουμε πει πολλές φορές, σημασία δεν έχει μόνο η πρωτοτυπία μιας ιδέας, αλλά κατά πόσο μπορείς να την αξιοποιήσεις έτσι ώστε να την κάνεις δικιά σου, προσδίδοντάς της το απαραίτητο ενδιαφέρον που θα κεντρίσει τον αναγνώστη. Ο "Τιμωρός", λοιπόν, έχει όλα όσα απαιτούνται υπό τις συνθήκες αυτές, αφού η πλοκή είναι εξαιρετικά καλογραμμένο και προσεγμένη στις λεπτομέρειες, η αφήγηση διατηρεί έναν δυναμικό και γεμάτο ένταση ρυθμό καθ' όλη της την διάρκεια, υπάρχει πληθώρα ανατροπών κι εκπλήξεων που κορυφώνουν την αγωνία αλλά και συμβάλλουν στην ενίσχυση της δράσης, χωρίς όλα ν' αποκλείουν τις μικρές εκείνες στιγμές όπου το χιούμορ ή και η τρυφερότητα, δοσμένη αρκετές φορές μέσα από τα μάτια ενός αθώου παιδιού, κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους, όχι μόνο για ν' αποφορτίσουν το κλίμα, αλλά και για να μας θυμίσουν πως η ζωή δεν είναι τόσο μαύρη.
Ωστόσο, και παρά τα όσα ειπώθηκαν παραπάνω, το μεγαλύτερο επίτευγμα του Parsons δεν είναι άλλο από το ότι έχει καταφέρει να διατηρήσει μια απίστευτη ισορροπία, στο σύνολο του μυθιστορήματός τους, από τους πολύ καλά δομημένους και αναπτυγμένους χαρακτήρες, μέχρι την σκληρή αποτύπωση της βίας που περιέχει η ιστορία αυτή, αλλά και τα σκοτεινά κίνητρα πίσω από την δολοφονική δράση του δράστη, με όλα αυτά να συνδέονται μαζί τους με τρόπο όχι απλά άρτιο, αλλά εντυπωσιακό. Ο συγγραφέας, με εξαιρετική μαεστρία, μάς παρουσιάζει τα δύο πρόσωπα του Μαξ, εκείνα του επιθεωρητή και του πατέρα που, αν και είναι εκ διαμέτρου αντίθετα, συνυπάρχουν όσο πιο αρμονικά γίνεται και που μας επιτρέπουν να γίνουμε κοινωνοί, τόσο της ψυχρής επαγγελματικής προσωπικότητας του Μαξ, όσο και της ευαίσθητης και τρυφερής πλευράς του. Όσον αφορά τη βία, αυτή αποτυπώνεται με ωμότητα που κάνει το στομάχι σου να σφίγγεται, με την περιγραφικότητα του Parsons να κάνει τις εικόνες αυτές να εντυπώνονται στην καρδιά και στο μυαλό σου σκοτεινιάζοντας την ψυχή σου, διατηρώντας, όμως, την απαραίτητη ευαισθησία με την οποία οφείλει ο καθένας ν' αντιμετωπίσει ένα θέμα σαν κι αυτό.
Εν κατακλείδι, αν μου ζητούσε κάποιος να βρω ένα ψεγάδι στο βιβλίο αυτό, θ' αδυνατούσα να το κάνω. Όσο κι αν το σκέφτομαι, δεν μπορώ να βρω κάτι που να μην μου άρεσε, ούτε όμως και κάτι που να ήταν αταίριαστο με την πλοκή και την ροή αυτής, ή που να μην ήταν όσο καλά δουλεμένο θα έπρεπε. Αντίθετα, ήταν άκρως σκοτεινό, κάνοντας την καρδιά σου να ραγίζει σε πολλά σημεία, με έντονη δράση που κάνει να κυλά λίγο πιο γρήγορα στις φλέβες σου, με ανατροπές που σου κόβουν την ανάσα, μα και προκαλώντας σου μια εσωτερική ανασφάλεια για το τι θα συμβεί τελικά και για το πως θα εξελιχθούν τα πράγματα, όχι μόνο από άποψη αφήγησης, αλλά και της ηθικής συνείδησης που συνοδεύει αυτήν σε όλες της τις προεκτάσεις. Αν δεν έχετε γνωρίσει, λοιπόν, μέχρι σήμερα τον Μαξ Γουλφ, τώρα είναι η καταλληλότερη στιγμή να το κάνετε. Και, πιστέψτε με, δεν θα χάσετε, παρά μονάχα θα βγείτε κερδισμένοι.

A return to DCI Max Wolfe single parent with a daughter Scout and his dog Stan. They are the backbone of the character in this books that is about parental love and a different kind of love. But more info would be spoilers.
A family gets killed in a most brutal way, except for the youngest one who gets kidnapped. The method of the murder points to another killer named "the slaughter man". He did kill some people in exact the same way. So the trail clearly leads that way. We find our hero in trouble with the travelers world, the world of pedophiles and the upper class.
While this story looks a straight forward story it bends and wriggles in a rather brutal way and at the end the damage wrecked on Wolfe's outfit is unbelievable. The story never really gives a hint of the direction it is going to take. Until the very end.
While it an easy to read and well written book it leaves some strings floating around or the writer chooses to leave it at that. The Traveler side of the story leaves something more.
An enjoyable visit but I have read better thrillers.

Nachdem mir der erste Teil der Max Wolfe Reihe nicht so gut gefallen hatte, war ich beim zweiten Teil ein wenig skeptisch. Aber bereits der Prolog hat mir sehr gut gefallen und ich bin deutlich besser in das Buch gestartet als erwartet.
Im Vergleich zum ersten Buch fand ich den Fall deutlich interessanter und insgesamt auch spannender gelöst. Erst zum Ende hin war mir einiges zu offensichtlich und hat meine Begeisterung ein wenig gebremst.
Max Wolfe finde ich immer noch eine sehr interessante Figur und ich mag hier vor allem seine private Seite und den Umgang mit seiner Tochter.
Da ich gehört habe, dass es in Teil 3 nochmal eine Steigerung gibt, bin ich nun sehr gespannt auf den nächsten Fall von max Wolfe.

Πέρυσι τον Απρίλιο διάβασα το πρώτο βιβλίο της σειράς με ήρωα τον Μαξ Γουλφ και μπορώ να πω ότι έμεινα ικανοποιημένος (συμπάθησα τον κεντρικό χαρακτήρα και η πλοκή μου φάνηκε πειστική), χωρίς βέβαια να ένιωσα ότι διάβασα κάτι το διαφορετικό στο είδος. Ένα θρίλερ σαν όλα τα υπόλοιπα που κυκλοφορούν εκεί έξω μου φάνηκε (ίσως λιγάκι καλύτερο από πολλά εξ αυτών). Γι'αυτό ίσως και δεν έτρεξα αμέσως να αγοράσω με το που κυκλοφόρησε στα ελληνικά το "Τιμωρός", το δεύτερο βιβλίο της σειράς, αλλά στάθηκα τυχερός και το βρήκα σε άριστη κατάσταση στο Μοναστηράκι σε χαμηλή τιμή λίγους μήνες μετά. Λοιπόν, μπορώ να πω ότι γενικά μου φάνηκε κατώτερο σε σχέση με το πρώτο βιβλίο.
Η περίληψη λέει τα εξής: Μια οικογένεια δολοφονημένη: Ξημερώματα Πρωτοχρονιάς μια πλούσια οικογένεια πέφτει θύμα δολοφονίας μες στο σπίτι της σ’ έναν καγκελόφραχτο πολυτελή οικισμό. Ο μικρότερος γιος τους έχει εξαφανιστεί. Ένας ετοιμοθάνατος σίριαλ κίλερ: Το όπλο του φόνου οδηγεί τον επιθεωρητή Μαξ Γουλφ σε έναν δολοφόνο που πριν από τριάντα χρόνια έγινε γνωστός ως ο Χασάπης. Όμως ο Χασάπης είναι πλέον μεγάλης ηλικίας και ετοιμοθάνατος; Μπορεί στ’ αλήθεια να ξαναμπήκε στο παιχνίδι; Ένα αγόρι αγνοούμενο: Το μόνο που γνωρίζει με σιγουριά ο Μαξ είναι ότι πρέπει να βρει το παιδί και να σταματήσει τον δολοφόνο πριν καταστρέψει άλλη μια αθώα οικογένεια ή πριν φτάσει στην πόρτα του…
Τι με ενόχλησε στο βιβλίο: Γενικά δεν έχω πρόβλημα με την βία και την κακία σ'ένα βιβλίο, αρκεί όμως να υπάρχει λόγος ή να είναι πειστικά τα κίνητρα των χαρακτήρων ή να υπάρχει ένας κάποιος ρεαλισμός ρε παιδάκι μου. Εδώ πολλές σκηνές, πολλά κίνητρα δεν με έπεισαν ούτε στο ελάχιστο. Επίσης κούνησα με απόγνωση το κεφάλι κάμποσες φορές με την αντιμετώπιση των αστυνομικών απέναντι σε υπόπτους ή και δολοφόνους. Καλά, πάτε άοπλοι να συλλάβετε έναν δολοφόνο; (ή ύποπτο, έστω!). Και σε γκέτο; Πως θα τον συλλάβετε, με την δύναμη της πειθούς; Ένα κάρο ξύλο έφαγαν οι καημένοι οι αστυνομικοί. Πείτε μου ότι δεν είναι έτσι τα πράγματα στην Αγγλία (εδώ στην Ελλάδα τροχονόμος είναι ο άλλος και έχει όπλο, τι λέμε τώρα). Αυτά ήταν πράγματα που μ'έκαναν να δυσανασχετήσω με το βιβλίο, γιατί μου φάνηκαν σαν εργαλεία για να δείξει πόσο κακός μπορεί να γίνει ο συγγραφέας με τους χαρακτήρες του ή πόσο βίαιη ιστορία μπορεί να γράψει ή πόσο ακραία μπορεί να φτάσει τα πράγματα. Κατά τ'άλλα η γραφή είναι καλή, εθιστική και ευκολοδιάβαστη, είναι της ίδιας σχολής και λογικής με πολλά άλλα αστυνομικά θρίλερ που μας έχουν κατακλύσει τελευταία.

Τι με ενόχλησε στο βιβλίο: Γενικά δεν έχω πρόβλημα με την βία και την κακία σ'ένα βιβλίο, αρκεί όμως να υπάρχει λόγος ή να είναι πειστικά τα κίνητρα των χαρακτήρων ή να υπάρχει ένας κάποιος ρεαλισμός ρε παιδάκι μου. Εδώ πολλές σκηνές, πολλά κίνητρα δεν με έπεισαν ούτε στο ελάχιστο. Επίσης κούνησα με απόγνωση το κεφάλι κάμποσες φορές με την αντιμετώπιση των αστυνομικών απέναντι σε υπόπτους ή και δολοφόνους. Καλά, πάτε άοπλοι να συλλάβετε έναν δολοφόνο; (ή ύποπτο, έστω!). Και σε γκέτο; Πως θα τον συλλάβετε, με την δύναμη της πειθούς; Ένα κάρο ξύλο έφαγαν οι καημένοι οι αστυνομικοί. Πείτε μου ότι δεν είναι έτσι τα πράγματα στην Αγγλία (εδώ στην Ελλάδα τροχονόμος είναι ο άλλος και έχει όπλο, τι λέμε τώρα). Αυτά ήταν πράγματα που μ'έκαναν να δυσανασχετήσω με το βιβλίο, γιατί μου φάνηκαν σαν εργαλεία για να δείξει πόσο κακός μπορεί να γίνει ο συγγραφέας με τους χαρακτήρες του ή πόσο βίαιη ιστορία μπορεί να γράψει ή πόσο ακραία μπορεί να φτάσει τα πράγματα. Κατά τ'άλλα η γραφή είναι καλή, εθιστική και ευκολοδιάβαστη, είναι της ίδιας σχολής και λογικής με πολλά άλλα αστυνομικά θρίλερ που μας έχουν κατακλύσει τελευταία.

Το δεύτερο βιβλίο του Tony Parsons ήρθε να μου ξαναθυμίσει γιατί αγαπάω τόσο τη γραφή του,τον ήρωά του και την αστυνομική λογοτεχνία ως είδος,γενικότερα. Ο άνθρωπος έχει αποδείξει πως ξέρει να γράφει ΚΑΙ αστυνομικό. Ξέρει να παίρνει μια αρχική ιδέα που δεν είναι τίποτα εξαιρετικά πρωτότυπο (ξεκλήρισμα οικογένειας από ψυχάκια δολοφόνο με σκοτεινά κίνητρα) και να το μετατρέπει σε μια πλοκή τόσο γεμάτη κι ανατρεπτική,που συναρπάζει όποιον το διαβάσει!

Λάτρεψα λοιπόν κυριολεκτικά τις αναλυτικότατες περιγραφές του Parsons - λεπτομερείς,αγωνιώδεις,ωμά ρεαλιστικές,γλαφυρές. Ακόμα κι ένας ερασιτέχνης συγγραφέας του είδους (εσύ,εγώ,κάποιος γνωστός,ο Τάδε...) θα μπορούσε να εμπνευστεί από αυτές και να αρχίσει να κρατάει σημειώσεις για το δικό του βιβλίο!
Δεύτερον,κάτι που μου έκανε πραγματικά μεγάλη εντύπωση σε ό,τι αφορά τις αστυνομικές επιχειρήσεις/εφόδους της ομάδας του Μαξ. Χωρίς να θέλω να θίξω τη γραφή και τις ιδέες του Parsons,απλά ως εξέλιξη στη δράση,δεν μπορώ να μη σχολιάσω ότι Δεν θέλω να πιστέψω πως ο συγγραφέας δεν το σκέφτηκε καλά όλο αυτό - ολόκληρο το βιβλίο είναι πολύ προσεγμένο για να του ξεφύγει κάτι τόσο οφθαλμοφανές. Θα το αποδώσω καθαρά στην ροή της πλοκής και τις εξελίξεις που ακολούθησαν ή θα ακολουθήσουν στο επόμενο βιβλίο,απλά δεν μπορούσα να το παραβλέψω εντελώς και να μην το σχολιάσω καθόλου!
Το βιβλίο αυτό το περίμενα εδώ και καιρό και δεν απογοητεύτηκα. Με κάλυψε από κάθε άποψη. Είναι ένας απίστευτος συνδυασμός ωμής αστυνομικής δράσης και απίστευτου συναισθηματισμού. Εκεί που διαβάζεις αποτρόπαιες σκηνές ενός εγκλήματος και ψάχνεις πιθανούς δράστες, έρχεται μια σκηνή του Μαξ με την μικρή του κόρη,μια γλυκιά κι ανθρώπινη εικόνα καθημερινότητας,και σε κερδίζει εξίσου. Απόλυτη ισορροπία σε μια πληθώρα συναισθημάτων,που κυμαίνονται από την αγωνία έως τη συγκίνηση.
Συνιστάται ανεπιφύλακτα! :)

Rubbish, really rubbish, I'm afraid. I'm trying to be generous with the 2 stars because I read it quickly, but I fear that was more out of incredulity and the unfounded hope it _must_ get better.
Wooden dialogue, creaking characters, too much shoehorned exposition (though, fortunately, it was less painful this time as he put less of it into awkward dialogue, and more just in the narrative - phew), cliche after cliche. Hmmm... The whole thing about the boy being taken and not killed was never explained - merely served as a dodgy plot device to bizarrely bump off some characters, add some gore and lever in a pointless love interest.
They shoved a short story in at the end which I haven't bothered with - tbh, I was just relieved it meant the book ended quicker than I first thought

After just two books I have come to actively dislike good old Max Wolfe. He’s beginning to remind me of Alex Cross: good thing he’s pretty much indestructible, because he sure is stupid. And there are just too many logic gaps in the narrative for me. I find I don’t really care what, if anything, happens next.

I adored Tony parson’s first crime novel, ‘The Murder Bag’ and so was very excited that it would be the first of a series… and the second instalment did not disappoint. It stepped up to another level completely and is probably one of the most fast paced and riveting crime novels I’ve read.
The hero of the series, single Dad Max Wolfe is a great central character and over the two first books of the series the picture of him is so well developed I feel like I know him and his daughter personally. Parson’s writes his central characters in such a way that you cannot help but develop an affection for them.
This particular instalment is one of the most horrifying and gritty dramas I’ve ever read, so much so that I doubt it would ever be made into a TV of film drama which is unfortunate as the first book leant itself really well to being the start of a hit series – but who knows someone might pick it up and dumb it down a little. I really hope so!
As with the last novel, this one opens with a truly horrific murder. A whole family truly ‘slaughtered’ in their home in the most terrible way. What follows takes us into the lives of a traveller settlement and digs up the memory of a similar murder many years ago but someone then named ‘The Slaughter Man’. Could he have struck again?
These books are primarily crime/detective fiction but also cross into the realms of thriller, horror and family drama. There are police procedural elements as expected with any crime novel but you don’t feel bogged down in them as these are much more character driven stories. Parsons has obviously done heaps of research too or just has a fantastic general knowledge about the MET as the stories are also chock full of really interesting information and true London history that make you stop and think, ‘Wow that was really interesting’.
Can’t say much more other than I can’t wait to read the next instalment. A top read and definite 5/5 from me.

This was the first Tony Parsons novel I had read. It is a grim piece of crime fiction. A family of four is butchered on New Year's Eve in a gated community in London. And a four-year-old boy is abducted.
Detective Max Wolfe, featured in the previous novel The Murder Bag, is assigned the case along with many colleagues. They discover that the massacre was carried out with the kind of stun gun used in the slaughter of animals. Wolfe looks for previous cases where such a weapon was used. There are a few but only one offers up a possible killer in this case. Twenty years previously a young man who became infamous as The Slaughter Man had murdered a father and his sons who had tried to castrate him because he was involved with the daughter/sister. They ended up killed with a stun gun similar to that used in this latest slaughter.
Max learns that The Slaughter Man has served his time and has been released. He is living with his brother and niece in a traveler settlement near London. After discovering photos of the slain beauty all over the The Slaughter Man's room, the evidence begins to point to him as the likely killer in this latest brutality. But as Detective Max continues to investigate he realizes that some things just don't seem to make sense. As he pokes and probes further he discovers that Peter The Slaughter Man has been framed. The architect of these murders we would not suspected until Max fits the pieces together.

This is the second novel in the DC Max Wolfe series and I have enjoyed it as much as I did the first. The book is set in London where a family has been murdered and the youngest child, a 4 yr old, has been kidnapped. I really like the character Max. It's really hard not to when you see how he wants to be a good father to his 5 year old daughter after his wife left him and the girl for another man. Maybe its because of this that I find it hard to understand why he would jeopardize his safety and go directly toward danger and go to the person who he knows is the murderer without any backup but I guess that was done to create action and drama.

I read The Murder Bag when it was released and really enjoyed it so I was delighted when The Slaughter Man was released! I started it thinking I'll read a few pages, a few turned into a third of the book in one go! Once I started this I couldn't put it down! I found the story really interesting, and I love it when Wolfe visits the Black Museum! It was a really fast paced book, with a few things happening that I wasn't expecting! I would highly recommend this book!

I did not realise this was 2nd in series until I finished.
This did not detract anything from story , as this was really very good.It centres around DC Max Wolfe and trying to find out how a family have been murdered and the youngest being kidnapped.Brilliant storyline and well written, I felt I was part of the scenery as it was really well thought out, especially London Streets.
As I have read this series back to front so far , I will have to e-read Murder Bag now, to be brought up to speed.

London: Unbegreifliche Geräusche durchschneiden die eiskalte Nacht in einer geschlossenen Wohnanlage, als die Geschwister Wood gewaltgeschwängerte Schreie der Eltern hören. „Ich will, dass du zusiehst“, brüllt die fremde, männliche Stimme!

Finished just in time to complete my Goodreads challenge!!
This one has taken more over a week to finish and after the fast pace of the first book in this series the second certainly drags. A lot of drama, drama, drama, that I felt was extremely over the top and the fascination with boxing certainly got a little tiresome. While I love to see the other side of these detectives sometimes less is more. With people getting shot left right and centre and detectives dropping like flies I wouldn't want to work on this police force.
I will read the next one and hope this was just a blip, because the first book was a great read.
