I don't really leave only five star reviews. I have just found so many great books. Laser-Sharp Focus. A No-Fluff Guide to Improved Concentration, Maximised Productivity and Fast-Track to Success by Joanna Jast is most definitely a book I need and falls under the category of a great book. It is easy and fast to read. Having written the book in a conversational manner, Dr. Jast leaves out all the fluff and technical jargon to guide the reader towards clearing away all distractions, setting up your work space to be optimal for productivity in easy to understand terms.

Following her guidelines, tips and suggestions will help you to focus on whatever task it is at hand, allowing you to get finished faster with better results, leaving you more time to do other things. You will learn how to decrease your stress and anxiety involved in having too much to do and not enough time to do it. Learning to focus is the key. I am happy to have found this book. I have far more to do and nowhere near enough time to do it. I am confident that this book will get me on the right track to get it all done, and done well. Get this book, follow her guidelines, get focused and get it all done.

At first, I've been a bit disappointed, because there is nothing new in this book or at least there is no magic solution. After a while I must admit that the book is nice summary of self-development topics and rules, combining knowledge about procrastination, prioritization, concentration techniques, time management (well, here's something new; author suggest to replace it with energy management) etc. I believe it may really help you in achieving that "laser-sharp focus".

Lots of great insights, pretty common-sensical (as the book itself states severally).

Well I must admit I procrastinated before reading this ebook. I have already read so much material on the subject that I thought what more was there to learn. But my initial reaction was wrong. This ebook brings the whole subject together in a structured and detailed but interesting manner and made me re-think about my own assumptions and approach. Of course I knew that creating an Environment where one can focus is critical. What I did not know is that Motivation is actually not so critical and that use of Energy rather of Time is. Now when I mention to my teenage daughters to Focus, I actually know what I am talking about. Better still give them this ebook for a Xmas present as they still don’t listen to Daddy.

Laser-Sharp focus is up to the point, and gives excellent points on how to deal with stress, emotions, and proper motivation to achieve perfect focus.

It doesn't delve deep into the science of what focuses our mind, which from a point of view makes it easier to grasp, though I'm sure the information can be easily obtained from additional literature. What this guide represents is a recount of the Joanna jast's experiences in being a creative writer and the methods that she has researched and used to help her gain control of her mind.

This focus system is simple, organized in three parts and 12 chapters, and each chapter has easily marked steps and important notes to memorize. It is written form the heart, and it's a book to come back to.

This was an easy to read book that really will help anyone improve their focus. It has many ideas that I can use on a day to day basis such as getting my workstation more ergonomic (something that has been on my list for a while but is now a priority) and using full screen mode when I am wanting to concentrate on my work. It also had some good tips on setting goals such as using the 'dumb smart' system and also listing 25 goals and then crossing out the bottom 20! I especially liked learning about intrinsic motivation and the power of emotions in productivity and learning. Many great takeaways. Highly recommended.

Another example of how I should write a book

- “emotions attract our attention. We pay attention to anything that’s emotional, negatively or positively: joy, happiness, or fear, anger.
- Emotions can hold sway over our ability to focus. ”
- “motivation is by nature fluctuating and hence cannot be relied on. It is much better to build a reliable, repeatable system that would propel you into that laser-sharp focus every time you want and need it.”
- “The Toyota Way and its 5S: Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardise and Sustain. ”

Pour ma part, ça me convenait. Les nombreux "disclaimers" médicaux présent au début des chapitres sont assez gossants, mais on arrive à les oublier.

An In-depth study of human behaviour!

I have been especially impressed with the Author's analysis of intrinsic and extrinsic motivators with relation to building focus. Fine detail of trigger points on Focus, Attention and Concentration make a lot of sense as well!
Great value for Readers keen on serious all-round improvement!!

I enjoyed this book because it wasn't just a "my approach fits all" book, but a set of tools to help you deal with your own barriers to focus. I immediately started keeping a distraction log after I finished that chapter.

I think this is a book I'll keep in my reference library to refer back to whenever I start drifting.

The book is full of very good guidelines and tips, it covers the main subject "getting focused" from different angles which is not easy to find in one single book.

You need some motivation for focus but motivation fluctuates and can be internally or externally driven.

To find your intrinsic motivation, seek how your current goals are connected with your deeper desires of mastering a skill or knowledge, of becoming autonomous or pursuing a noble goal, your personal mission.

Reward-driven motivators can work, but they often turn out to be short-lived and their impact wears out quickly.

Environment is extremely important to help you focus - try to minimise distractions including people distracting you.

Stresses importance of desk setup. Be sure to turn off notifications and only check emails a couple times a day,

If you try to squeeze too many tasks, meetings, and calls into every available minute of your day. Say yes to every potentially fantastic opportunity and cut back on sleep to find time to get it all done, you may accomplish a lot, briefly before it starts to crumble down and you feel burnt out.

Therefore be sure to manage your energy, not your time!

Use the Book to target specific areas

Jump ahead and read the sections that are relevant, the kind of issues you are facing that prevents focus. Reading from cover to cover, you may find that the book may be repetitive. On the whole, I picked up a few pointers that I will use on increasing my focus.

There is nothing groundbreaking in this book and some parts are repeated through out. However, most of advice seems solid and it's nice that the author acknowledges that all people are different and tries to account for that.

Great Ideas. Broken Links

Tried to find Joanna's bonuses without success. There are a few points I wanted clarification on. I was not able to get a response from her.

Style wise it's a clear and simple read, and comes across as very personal and anecdotal. It's got some good tips on focus and minimising distractions, but like with any self-help book, your mileage may vary. I've read several books over the course of many years so whilst some of what's presented here isn't new, it's worthwhile if you're dipping your toe in and starting out.

Nothing new. All the latest productivity tips compiled and written in blogging style (eg. like this, with lots of parentheses and 1-word sentences). Right. This is the way.

If this book is distilled to one simple sentence, it's 'just do it'. Quoting from James Clear, author of Atomic Habits (for bonus point if someone reads this by chance):

"You don't need more focus or time, just less distraction."

I just couldn't get through this. I was really hoping it would help, but maybe "self-help" books just aren't for me? It seemed way too straight forward and very dependent on a person's style. Just not mine.
