"The five years I allotted you your freedom have been hell for me and dangerous to anyone I came into contact with. I am very close to turning, and it is too late for me to seek the dawn. It was necessary for the safety of all concerned that I come for you now." -Gregori

"And just for the record, your mind needs to be washed out with soap! Half the things you think we're going to do are never going to happen. I could never look at you again."-Savannah

Dark Magic the 4th book in the Dark Series by Christine Feehan is my favorite book of the whole series, by far!! I am totally in love with this book. In books there are some couples you like, some you hate, and some you love. Some that feel like just a story, some that make you excited, and then there are the couples that feel so real and tangible that they come to life for you. They are like a friend, they live inside you. Burnt in your memories for all times. They have so much chemistry that you feel it as deep as they do, and they make you long for that kind of love. That is this couple for me!! Damn even after 4 times of reading this book I still find it amazing. I still get all giddy with butterflies and try to savor every moment of the read.

"You are part of me. I cannot hurt you. Touch my mind with yours. I want you more than I have ever wanted anything in my entire existence." -Gregori

"I was being childish, Gregori, when I made such an accusation," she said softly, her eyes meeting his squarely. "I wanted my own life, with no one to answer to. It was thoughtless and wrong of me. And I was afraid. But I'm not now, and I ask your forgiveness - "-Savannah

My Savannah:

You will show some respect, Gregori ordered. Savannah burst out laughing, then reached up to caress his shadowed jaw. "Keep hoping, my love, and perhaps someday someone will obey you." Aidan's mouth twitched, the golden eyes sliding over Gregori in amusement. "She inherited something besides her mother's good looks, did she not?" Gregori sighed heavily. "She is impossible."-Gregori, Savannah, and Aidan

Savannah started off in this book running for her freedom. She was naive and didn't understand how her actions effected Gregori. She was scared of him because he was so powerful. He brought out such deep feelings, that she was afraid that he would take over her life. But Savannah grows up quickly when she almost loses Gregori to the darkness. She realizes how selfish she was and she becomes a truly wonderful lifemate to Gregori. Loving, supportive and giving. She brought out a much softer side of Gregori. She got him to let go and live. Made him smile, laugh, and she loved and accepts him unconditionally. Savannah had a very mischievous playful personality. What I loved most about Savannah was she knew what an amazing man her lifemate was. She wanted to learn how to be a partner to Gregori, she wanted to help this great man of power, take some of his burden, and be a team. She wanted to be worthy of such a great lifemate. And she was!

"When an old geezer marries a young chick, he has to learn to get back into the swing of things. Party time. Night life. Does it ring a bell, or has it been too long?" she teased. Gregori bunched her hair in his hand and tugged. "Show some respect, bebe, or I might have to turn you over my knee." "Kinky." One delicate shoulder rose and fell in a sexy little shrug. "I'm willing to try anything once."-Savannah and Gregori

My Gregori:

 photo 65f7703545b4d1511af3757ec2c919e1_zps4vtkdfu2.jpg

"Savannah? Were you trying to hit me?" "I did hit you - twice, you scum. You didn't even notice the first time." She sounded very irritated with him. For some reason it made him want to smile. "I apologize, mon amour. Next time, I promise I will notice when you strike me." The hard edge to his mouth softened into a semblance of a smile. "I will even go so far as to pretend that it hurts, if you wish it."-Gregori and Savannah

Oh my Gregori. My yummy, sexy, bossy, dark Gregori, how I love you! Gregori was perfect, amazing, and I fucking loved him! Just sayin'. Gregori has been alone a long time. Shunned by the very people that depend on him for protection and healing. He is the boogie man of the Carpathian people. Gregori feels he is dark, a monster. Killing countless vampires some who were close friends and family has taken it's toll on his soul. Gregori is so close to turning because he gave Savannah five years of freedom that he was almost lost to the darkness when he claimed Savannah. Gregori was super protective. He battled with giving Savannah the freedom she wanted and keeping her safe. He was very old fashion when it came to his views of a woman's role in a relationship, listen to her lifemate and stay safe. But Savannah shows him quickly that women today don't play that game! Gregori truly wanted Savannah to be happy, so he did soften and learned to compromise with Savannah for the most part, but he was still Gregori, and he never changed when it came to her safety. Gregori was perfect! I would change nothing about him.

Look at your hero now. See what I really am. I kill without thought. Without effort. Without remorse. Without mercy. I am the monster you named me, and I am without equal. Someday I will pay the ultimate price. Savannah's soft laughter whispered over his skin. It was a gentle, cleansing breeze drifting through his mind. And who is stronger than my lifemate? No one can kill you. -Gregori and Savannah

 photo 90d9531a04a0fddf78301fbc460c60ae_zpsytzdfoyh.jpg

"I love you, Gregori," she whispered softly against his throat. "I really love you. The real you. Do you understand?"-Savannah

Everything about this couple cried out to me. I felt extremely connected to them. Their love was explosive, wild, deep and very moving. I can't give words to how much I love Savannah and Gregori. Gregori in all his kickass glory, and Savannah given him all kinds of hell. I loved watching Gregori eat his words about how to handle women, it was too funny. And the way Savannah wrapped Gregori around her finger was so cute. It was great seeing their love grow to something unbreakable and beautiful. It was fun getting to see Aidan again. And to make a perfect book even more unforgettable we meet Gary Jansen in this book. God I love me some sweet, nerdy , Gary Jansen! I truly loved this book from start to finish, and never wanted it to end! This book is awesome and amazing and if you like paranormal and have not read this book you should try it.

"You are my world, ma petite, my very existence. You are what makes living bearable. You are my light, the very air I breathe." His mouth brushed her pulse, her earlobe. "You are not meant to walk in death. You never were." "If you walk in death, Gregori, then that is where you will find me. Right beside you. I belong where you are. I am your lifemate. There is no other. I am your lifemate." -Gregori and Savannah

Gregori is the Ultimate Alpha Male!!

He gets 2.5 "Arrogant Alpha Stars"

d

Gregori is a hunter of rogue vampires. He is all powerful and known among his people as "The Dark One". He serves nothing but justice to Carpathian males that have turned evil. The only thing that prevents Carpathian males from turning rogue, is a Lifemate. Their Lifemate becomes their anchor and keeps them sane.

For years Gregori has known that he is losing touch with his humanity. He no longer sees the world in color, but in black and white. Life has no joy and his desires to feed are becoming more intense. He knows that he needs a lifemate soon or will risk turning rogue...so he does the un-imaginable!!

d

“You are my world,ma petite, my very existence. You are what makes living bearable. You are my light, the very air I breathe."

Savannah Dubrinsky is the daughter of the Dark Prince. She wants her independence and isn't interested in answering to an ancient, bossy, control freak vampire that is claiming to be her life mate. Savannah is young and somewhat naive, but she has spunk and refuses to do Gregori's bidding without a fight.

Gregori would just put Savannah into a deep sleep whenever she refused to do his bidding. I found this very disrespectful and annoying at first. Then it just became comical that the hero would be so arrogant and dismissive of his life mate.

d

This is a bit of a dark read with elements I would expect to find in a bodice ripper. Please do not read spoiler if you plan to read this book.Leave it to Christine Feehan to create a dark, controlling hero that is sexy as hell. I don't mind a good bodice ripper, so I had no problems with this book.

Imagine waiting long centuries for your mate, on the very edge of madness. That is the fate of Gregori. I really loved his character. I loved that he was an incredible hero but also a destroyer of their enemy, the Carpathians that lose their soul and become evil, soulless killers. Gregori might be too much for some romance fans. He is an intense guy and he is obsessed with Savannah in a way that might be scary in a real live guy. But it worked for this book. If you don't like uber-possessive, aka stalkerific heroes, you won't like Gregori. I do so I was cool with him. The Carpathians live in a different reality where the rules of real life man and women interactions don't apply. You have to leave those expectations at the door when you read this book. Provided you have done that, I think you could handle Gregori.

Again, Feehan's storytelling seduced me. She does tend to use the same phrases a lot. Another Goodreads friend aptly coined them 'Feehanisms.' She is so right. Despite that, I can't get enough of her writing. The Carpathians take the vampire story in a different direction that utterly compelling and unforgettable. I was so glad to read Gregori's story after meeting him in Dark Desire. The good news is I get introduced to even more yummy, intense men in these books.

I liked Savannah. She was independent, intelligent, but also loving. She fought the lifemate bond initially, but then she came to realize that she was just as compelled to love Gregori, and she helped him get over his guilt about 'manipulating their connection' while she was in the womb. I really liked the communication Gregori had with Savannah when he saved her and her mother Raven's life. It made me want to read their book.

Okay I know Gregori is ages older than Savannah, but it really wasn't creepy. It felt right. I am a sucker for the idea of a love that is destined, so it really appealed to me that Gregori had waited so long for Savannah.

Again, the action is fierce and the violence is not shied away from. But if you like a good supernatural adventure book, you will love this book. Also it's paired with a fantastic love story. I'd really like to give this book 4.5 stars.

Gregori (the Dark One) and Savannah Dubrinsky

The night was alive with the heartbeats of countless people. He walked among them, unseen, undetected, moving with the fluid grace of a jungle predator. Their scents were strong in his nostrils. Cloying perfume. Sweat. Shampoos. Soaps. Alcohol. Drugs. AIDS. The sweet, insidious smell of blood. There were so many in this city. Cattle. Sheep. Prey. The city was the perfect hunting ground.

Gregory, the dark one, saved Savannah when she was still inside her mother's womb. He knew since then that she was his (see book 2 Dark Desire) and that his best friend’s only daughter will be his only salvation in order not to turn and become an evil vampire.

Savannah will grow up, leave the Carpathian mountains and she will become one of the world's greatest magicians. Nobody will know that what they see is real and her magic is real.
Savannah tries to postpone the unavertable, but soon Gregory will come in New Orleans to collect his lifemate before the horrible vampires steal her away from him.

"How did you find me?"
"I always know where you are, every moment. Five years ago you said you needed time, and I gave it to you. But I've never left you. I never will."

Gregory is very controlling and very old. Savannah is very naive and very young. But somehow they fit like the two sides of the same coin.

My favourite story among the first four.

How phenomenal, savage and compelling "Dark Magic" is in the 4:th instalment in the "Dark Carpathian"-series.I have missed Christine Feehan`s passionate writing so much that my eyes was glued to the pages and her world of the Carpathian creatures just enthranced me.She always know what her readers wants and never shies away from trying something new.In "Dark Desire" Raven and Mikhail got a daughter that almost died if the most powerful Carpathian male Gregori The Dark One hadn`t saved her,and that born daughter turns out to be his lifemate Savannah Dubrinsky.A Carpathian can`t live without his lifemate or else turns into a renegade vampire and i so badly wanted his empty soul to get a heart. So when the time comes for him to claim Savannah she begs for five years of freedom and despite his gnawing hunger for her he gives her that time.Savannah in her fear and naivity runs away from him and leaves the Carpathian Mountains and becomes a world famous Magician. So when Gregori finds her to finally claim her she tries to fight the vehement sexual tension between them to no use,and in mids of all this there is a Master Vampire itching to get his claws on Savannah.

Savannah Dubrinsky is one hell of a heroine-and had to be for being the lifemate of Gregori and daughter to Raven and Mikhail (MCs from "Dark Prince").She has a fun sense of humor, great pride and compassion and indeed a strong temper and i could definitely understand her need of independence and freedom. But in running away from Gregori she was only running away from herself. She failed to understand at the start how connected she and Gregori`s souls and mind truly are. They did everything as one ever since she was born. Its such a beautiful way for a romance to develop and i loved when Savannah understood how truly selfish she was being in rejecting Gregori. After all those centuries of holding out, he had risked the damnation of his soul for her five years of freedom. That broke my heart as it did to Savannah, she could no longer after that turn her back on Gregori.

Gregori The Dark One is a legend, the most powerful healer and the most ruthless warrior.Gregori was one of the ancients and a true wild Carpathian male with a code of honor and a iron will stronger than a mountain. He had been living a isolated life for centuries holding out for the hope of finding his lifemate and he had been so dead inside that nothing could bring an ounce of feeling in him.In the eyes of others a heartless demon and a monster and sentenced to a lonely existence if it weren`t for Savannah. This man brought tears to my eyes and his shattering pain was so raw that my heart broke so many times.Like Savannah i also thought "Who could possibly live year after year in such an empty void and survive with his soul intact?".His love for Savannah was larger than life and the world and while he always knew they belonged together he always feared for her safety and that someone would take her away from him.His magnificent and passionate way of loving Savannah brought tears to my eyes,i am so happy he finally got his happy ending.

As a couple they are light and darkness blended together.Savannah is the only soul to ever stand up against Gregori and its so fun watching how she has him around her little finger.Every time Gregori said i love you in french i just swooned more and more and their every scene JUST MADE ME FALL IN LOVE so much that i consider Gregori and Savannah one of my top favourite couples of all time!Savannah with the beauty of her nature turned Gregori inside out and melted his coldness and frigid existence. They know each other the best and strives to make each other the happiest.I also found their new human friend Gary Janson a entertaining nerdy character and i also know he has a niece that will be a heroine to one of the Carpathian males in the future. Also Julian Savage got mentioned a lot and a mysterious singer with the name Desari which makes me so excited to read their book next!!

UUUUGH. Ok, this is the worst. I had seen this series floating around, SO popular, and I decided to give it a whirl, got 2 books. I try not to be critical but these Carpathian dudes are too much to tolerate. I mean, Alpha is one thing, but they're controlling, condescending and borderline abusive. NOT FOR ME. Ugh. She writes a pretty good racy scene and that's the best I can say about it.
I wanted to punch the dudes in these books!

At last, we get Gregori's book. Most readers who started the Carpathian series at the beginning with Dark Prince , have been waiting for our ancient warrior to get his happily ever after --and with Dark Magic, the wait is over. We only had to wait four books. And for me, the wait was worth it.

Gregori is one of the oldest and the deadliest of Carpathian men. As with all the men of his kind, he lost the ability to feel emotions and see in color when he turned 200. He's nearly a thousand now. And he is dangerously close to losing his honor and becoming the evil vampire he hunts. All vampires were Carpathians to begin with: they all drink blood; can use telepathy; shapeshift; and must avoid the sun. But Carpathian men who give up hope of salvation, of finding their lifemate, embrace evil and become the beast that is the vampire.

Gregori has found his lifemate. She is Savannah, daughter to his best friend, Mikhail. She is a magician who has left the Carpathian Mountains of Romania to seek her independence. Gregori had come to her when she was 18, but she was not ready to be with him. She begged him for time and he gave her 5 years. These years have been very difficult for him. So difficult, that when they are finally reunited, he is almost more beast than man. He spirits her away to his lair and "claims" her. Savannah is very attracted to Gregori, but the act between them is far from gentle. She thinks him a monster, until she allows herself to use the telepathy of her people and see inside his mind.

Gregori is a tortured soul. He believes himself to be the monster she has branded him. But he loves her; he needs her. He doesn't think he deserves her; especially because he thinks he tampered with nature and somehow forced her to become his lifemate while her mother carried her in the womb. Savannah begins to soften toward Gregori as she sees the ways he is fragile. And she realizes that despite his strengths and dominating ways, she has much power, simply because of his feelings for her.

The pair leave San Fransisco and head to New Orleans, where they take up residence. They quickly run into trouble with a ring of vampire hunters who are, ironically, led by a vampire. While raiding a safe house for the hunters, they find Gary Jansen, a scientist and true-believer, who they quickly befriend. He becomes Gregori's first human friend, and goes on to become a reoccurring character in the series.

Gregori is very old and has some old ideas. He is stubborn and overbearing. But he is also very sympathetic. He loves Savannah so completely. And their love scenes are very, very hot.

Like all of these books, there is a little repetition with the language. We get several reminders that Gregori is "the Dark One." And our standard reminder that he is "sensual with a hint of cruelty." But it's just a tiny annoyance in what is a really good book. It's one of my favorite in the series and one that Carpathian fans cannot miss. 4 1/2 stars.

4.5 stars: This was on the sensual side, without being graphic

LORDT 🥵 Gregori feeling terrible for taking Savannah roughly was everything I needed
Because he uses his mouth to soothe her… in ALL WAYS🥵🔥
Gaaaahhh. And the way he never met another male touch her was absolutely scrumptious 🤣
Giving a man severe allergies so he couldn’t kiss her? 🤣🤡
Turning into a huge Rottweiler that was foaming at the mouth and chasing another one up a tree??
RUTHLESS 🤣💀💀💀
That’s his mate 🤷‍♀️ he’s been WAITING (yes. He’s been celibate since he knew she came into existence), so he’s gotta do what he’s gotta do 👏😅🤣🤣🤣
Sigh. The entire claiming scene and the way Gregori makes it up to Savannah was soooooo worth it 🥵💦🔥🫠😉

2022 review
Even the first "claiming" (coughcough *noncon* coughcough) scene was sensual ish. And, this was my first book by Christine Feehan (that I can remember- I like to pretend that the books I read in the early 2000s didn't exist... sometimes, it was on the questionable side🤣).

Gregori is a legendary Carpathian male who's ready for his mate to become his. What's a Carpathian you ask? Isn't it just like a vampire? Well, kind of- vampires are beings that go to the dark side and can never go back, whereas Carpathians are killers and enforcers of the undead. Do they drink blood? Yes, but they're good guys. They have some limitations like direct sunlight can weaken them as well as not having blood, but for the most part, they're immortal. Gregori is over 1000 years old. 23 years ago, he found his mate- but she was still cooking in her Carpathian-mom's belly, and now he's ready for her.

Savannah's (23) has been living her life for the past 5 years. 5 years ago, Gregori approached her, ready to claim her as his, but she wasn't ready. She asked him to give her 5 years to live her life, and he did. She's been working as a mistress of illusion, using her Carpathian power to work as a magician. When Gregori finally finds her, I loved how jealous and possessive he gets😈. She's his and only his; he's been celibate for years, waiting for her to grow up, and he's staking his claim, and oh does he stake his claim😉.

This book is SENSUALLLLLLL🥵🥵🥵! Oh, dear Lord, and it was written in 2000? Man... I wouldn't have minded to have read this back in my teenage days! LOL. It's not GRAPHIC or RAUNCHY like we're used to reading these days, but dayummm... it's very smexxxxy🔥🔥🔥!!! Suuure, the first time Gregori takes Savannah is a little... um... noncony lol😅, but it's her fault for asking him to wait🤷🏻‍♀️. How dare she do that to the poor man😑!? Gregori- you have the patience of a SAINT! Although it got a little... um... ANIMALISTIC💦, Gregori felt remorseful afterwards and Savannah understood lol.

Their intimate scenes go beyond a normal connection- their chemistry is visceral😅, which means their smexxy times are primal, raw, and passionate🥵. Even though they weren't overly graphic, I was still feeling faint while reading 😳lol. I can't only imagine how much juicier those scenes would be if this was written now👀.

Although this book is mostly about their connection and life together, there are a lot of things going on. Gregori gets taken so that they can experiment on him, since he's a "vampire", and there are people that aren't necessarily good out there trying to research them in unethical ways. We get introduced to a few good characters, one of them a normal human, that don't want to cause harm. Even though Gregori is immortal, he can still get hurt, and Savannah feels it all since she's his mate.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. If it ever goes on sale, I'll definitely buy it. I was able to listen to is on Scribd and read it for free through Hoopla (borrowing books has taken on a whole new meaning lol).

⚠️safety squad⚠️
-no cheating/sharing/omd/owd
-noncon ish first claiming scene/maybe dubcob ish
-some mild violence/bloodshed (not extremely graphic)
-virgin h/celibate since she was in the womb H
-HEA/no epilogue (this was written like in 2000 🤣)

Another book I have re-read a zillion times!

Gregori is the quintessential alpha male and then some! While he is a bit of an a-hole for some of the book, if you have read the first 2 books (and you should before reading this one for sure!), he has solid reasons. He has been alone for a thousand years and has been the prince's right hand for most of that time. He is the most skilled hunter and healer, and he takes both duties beyond seriously. The more a Carpathian male who does not have a lifemate kills (hunters are tasked with killing vampires who were once Carpathian males), the more likely he is to turn vampire, and Gregori has been on that edge for centuries by now.

Savannah is the only daughter of the prince and his lifemate (a human who was converted to Carpathian in book 1), and her mother raised her to be an independent woman. As such, Savannah is very high spirited and resents the idea of becoming a broodmare for her race as she has yet to live a quarter of a century. She knows Gregori is her lifemate, and though he sets her passions on fire, she is also terrified of him. Gregori.... The Dark One... The Boogyman of Carpathians He is the one everyone whispers about and no one wants to be close to. Savannah doesn't want to be tied to such a man, and she insisted on being given freedom longer than a young Carpathian woman is typically allowed. Though it almost killed him, Gregori gave her 5 more years, but he can wait no longer because if he does, he may turn, and then no one (human or Carpathian) will be safe. But as a human collation of people who do not differentiate between Carpathian and vampire descend upon them with murderous intent, will Gregori be too late to save Savannah, and ultimately, himself?

HOT HOT HOT!

I’m 20 years late to this series which yes could make a huge difference. I may have enjoyed this more had I read it when it first came out. But I didn’t and I’ve struggled. I’ve found the books boring and repetitive.

Why not just quit?

In a word Gregori.
He was the one bright spot from the first book. I’ve been waiting for his book. Because I knew it would be different. Savannah is the daughter of Mikhail and Raven. She’s the daughter of the Prince of the Carpathians. So I wouldn’t have to suffer pages and pages of denial and distress.

Or so I thought.

Now some people will complain about Gregori. Yes he’s overbearing, arrogant, controlling and manipulative. All the Carpathian males are but I’ve accepted that. Especially when you consider what’s at stake.

Early on it was Savannah that disappointed me. She’s knows the score. Knows he’s close to going rogue and doesn’t seem to care. He gave her an extra 5 years at great personal cost to himself.

This isn’t a very feminist view I know. But I’ve suffered through 3 boring repetitive books. All to read Gregori’s and it’s more of the same.

I nearly threw the book across the room in disgust. It’s safe to say I wasn’t a happy bunny. But this was Gregori’s book. And I’d suffered through 3 long seemingly never ending books to get here. Books full of long flowing velvet hair, velvet skin, tiny waists, shapely breasts etc etc etc so I wasn’t going to quit now.

The rest of the book was better. And I’m glad I continued on. But thankfully I’m done with this series. It’s boring, repetitive and each book is interchangeable with the next.

I wish romance authors took a page out of isekai for once

There's a genre of anime called isekai, it literally translates to 'different world'. The archetype involves an ordinary looking guy being reincarnated into a world where he's the most powerful being ever to exist (and gets a harem of women, but that's not the point I want to make)

───〃⟡ ⋅ My own thing (you can skip this if you want)

People complain that the heroes being overpowered makes the fighting scene lose tension. Which is true, but if you want tension in fighting scenes then you really should've be reading/watching isekai anime.

Me, on the other hand, have desperately been looking for such a hero in romance. I want to read about a hot One Punch Man-type hero. One that actually comes back unscathed when he tells the worried heroine that he'll be fine. One that laughs when she wrings her hands at the danger because he knows that absolutely nothing can even scratch him.

The hero in this book was hyped as such a person when introduced in book 1. A being so powerful, he's a legend among his own kind. A Carpathian so indestructible, that even the king of the Carpathian, the oldest and most powerful of his kind, isn't certain he would be able to win against him.

"This is it," I thought, "I found my isekai hero at last!"

But I didn't.

He's very powerful, possibly the most powerful being in this series and he doesn't lose or anything. But during the final battle, he doesn't win by a huge margin either... He doesn't just stand stoically as the NPCs go at him while his energy doesn't decrease (yet I just made an SAO reference, I'm that old)

It's nitpicky thing, yes, but I feel like some of it is justified based on the hype from book 1.

───〃⟡ ⋅ The romance

Apart from that, I think the romance was okay. He's as obsessed as heroes are supposed to be about their fated mates and she doesn't fight the pull for that long either.

I think if the book had actually given them time to just have fun and get to know one another in a more visible way it would've made it better.

However, 90% of their progress comes from the fact their mating makes their minds merge and they can just slip in and out of each other's thoughts.

She gets to know him better and realizes how much of a non-monster he is (lol, I apologize for my butchering of the language) more by seeing his memories and reading his feelings than by actually talking to him.

The best moments of the book were the heroine teasing him and trying to sunshine his grumpy ass. But any sort of levity or romantic progress always get interrupted. There's never a nice conclusion to the romantic scenes. They gets trampled and overshadowed by steam or action.

───〃⟡ ⋅ Final thoughts

So, I didn't get my romance version of Ainz Ooal Gown but that's a me thing.

The rating is mostly based on the good actions scenes, the mostly good steam and the disappointing romantic progression.

4.5 stars. I was so excited to read Grigori's book but worried it would be a let down. I am happy to report that I was not let down. I loved watching Grigori fall head over heals for Savannah and do exactly the things he often mocked Mikail and Aidan over with their women. Their first sexual experience did not go well. Thank goodness Savannah did not turn completely crazy and he managed to make up for it. I loved Savannah. She was independent and fierce. Yet once she got over her short lived meltdown over her loss of independence, she handled Grigori with care and he really needed that. I loved that she challenged him but supported him in all ways. Nothing in his past got to her and when he was depressed over his part in making her his life mate - she called BS on it and basically steamrolled him into moving on. She just seemed to always do or say what he needed. Grigori is tortured but watching him find the light through her was beautiful. This was by far the sweetest book in the series.

Of course, Grigori likes to give orders and he commanded her against her will too often for her safety. This could have gone much worse if it were not for Savannah's character. He is sad and tortured, unfeeling, a monster. Yet with her, he is none of those things. You see hope, laughter, empathy and excitement over the future.

The book dragged a little in the last 30% for me. Which is shocking because of the action scenes. It may have been be have I am tired! I like Gary, but I am not into picking up strays as a plot device. Hopefully he will be useful later. I like the heads up we got on Julian's story. Made me want to continue for at least one more right now so I can read Dark Challenge.

My only real complaint is the lack of continuity to previous stories. Bluntly, I want to see little Carpathian babies!!!! I would think Raven would have more. Plus now we have Jacques, Aidan and Grigori.. Let's see some kids! This is totally safe. No cheating or OW.

I thought the first book was bad. Nothing compared to the forth one. Rape, pedophiles, domination (and not in bed) choose your pick. And all of it boring to death (yes, sex too. sigh)

I know I prefer heroines who kick, rather than kiss, ass. Still I enjoy pararomance and their domineering males. I may appreciate soulmates, but not lifemates when this means no choice whatsoever, a woman turned into a slave forced even in her mind. nope, no way.

This book is so good! I loved it! It is very well written, interesting, and the reader really gets to know the characters. Gregori is an awesome hero. He was so sweet in his own way. He started out gruff and cold, but it wasn't long until he was joking, laughing and being tender. Savannah was a spitfire. I understood how she felt, but I didn't like that she hurt Gregori's feelings when she kept saying she wanted to live on her own. I liked her a lot more when she went all in with him and became the lifemate he deserved. They were a great couple and I loved how they interacted with each other. Gregori definitely goes on my top heroes list :)

My review is based mostly on the series itself and not 2 much on Dark Magic.I have read the first five books in Feehan's Dark Series. Once u've read one of these books u have read them all. They are EXTREMELY repetitive. Everything is described as being velvet. All the women are the same; long hair (velvet hair mind you) past their hips, narrow ribcages and small waist which empahsize their full breast. They are all petite and fragile...same characteristics/personalities.. u name it. The only thing Feehan does is change their names, hair colours and professions. The men are all dark and brooding and bossy beyond belief. The storylines are the same, more about the women complaining aout losing their 'free will' and the men fearing 'the beast within'. After awhile the incessant declarations of undying and eternal love becomes annoying. Dark Magic is no different from the others. If it is the 1st Dark series book u've read u may like it because u have not yet endured the repetition. I suggest that if it is ur 1st, dont buy anymore, believe me ur not missing a thing.

I tried, I really did. This is book 4 in a long series. Read book 1, enjoyed it. Read book 2, thought it was ok. Skipped book 3 because I didn't care about the main character...what I was really interested in was Gregori, the hero of this story.

Christine Feehan created a very enigmatic character in Gregori and I really wanted this story to redeem the series for me, but I quit reading on page 21. I can't take it anymore.

Feehan is a gifted story teller, but I grow tired of the following:

Characters are always shoving their hands through their hair to get it out of their faces, making me want to jump into the book and start clamping all these luxurious manes down with hair clips.

The women are always described as having a "narrow rib cage" or "tucked in waist". They're all teeny tiny Tinkerbells, I get it...not really something I can relate to. :-)

The Carpathian's dialogue is wooden. "Will not" instead of "won't"..."cannot" instead of "can't"..."let us" instead of "let's". I know it's supposed to seem Old World, but it's annoying.

And the term "lifemate", after 2 books, is just grating on me.

I'm really disappointed. I wanted to see Gregori find happiness, but I can't read anymore. I'll just rewind the 21 pages I just read and make up another happy ending for Gregori and Savannah - one where perhaps Savannah has corrective surgery on that "narrow rib cage" so she can have a damn sandwich like a regular chick. :-)

This is the fourth book in the series, and I have to say it's wearing a little thin. Well, I don't expect great things from it, and they're enjoyable for what they are, but Feehan's writing is very unimpressive and starts to get annoying pretty quickly.

This is Gregori's story. One of the ancients, the second-oldest Carpathian alive*, he is revered and feared among his own kind for the ruthless hunter that he is. No Carpathian is more powerful or more knowledgable. If he turns, nothing will be able to stop him.

But he has ensured that Raven and Mikhail's daughter, Savannah, will be his lifemate and save him. He doesn't reckon on the strong emotions she stirs in him, nor the guilt he feels for manipulating nature - or so he believes.

After resisting his domineering ways and getting over her fear of him, Savannah reaches out to him and teaches him that he is not the monster he believes himself to be.

I want to like these books more than I do, but it's simply Feehan's writing style that bugs the hell out of me. The characters and story-lines are a bit repetitive, but that's ok, it is paranormal romance after all. But her descriptions never change, and she uses them over and over again in the same book, in all the books I've read so far.

* Later books in the series introduce much older Carpathians.

This was difficult to rate (more my reaction than a review).

The first 30% was somewhat disturbing. I worry how Savannah's response to the dubious consensual scene could be upsetting/triggering to some even though it made sense in the context of the Dark Carpathian culture in which neither lifemate party really has a choice.

I did like how Savannah quickly came to accept her lot (quickly compared to heroines in previous books) and worked her way almost into a side-kick role by the end of the story. She is the strongest heroine yet.

The action-adventure in the final 30% was tons of fun. So I am going with the average - 3 stars.

Wow. I have never wanted to set fire to a book faster than this one in my entire life.

description

Ahh, the early 2000's: when kidnapping and rape were acceptable in vampire books and even deemed ROMANTIC and TRAGIC. Jfc.

So yeh, if you haven't guessed by now, the hero kidnaps the heroine, ignores her continued pleas to let her be and live her life as she chooses (cause, you know, she's a fucking PERSON not a teacup poodle for him to torture with ugly sweaters and pedigree dog food), and then subsequently rapes her.

description

I had started this book, wondering why it'd been nearly 5 years since i've read a Feehan novel and this reminded me why.

I also vaguely remember reading this book when i was fourteen and thinking how romantic and self sacrificing the heroine was being. Unfortunately, not knowing in my adolescent brain that she was a fucking VICTIM not some god damn matyr for Christ's sake.

This wasn't a romance, this was Stockholm Syndrome.

The reason I like "dark romance" is because the "villian" or "anti-hero" love interest is usually very aware and cognizant of his/her wrongdoing and just accepts it as who they are- maybe even proudly flaunts it!- but MOST IMPORTANTLY their partner either 1) reluctantly comes around to their side of things because they LOVE THEM SO MUCH or 2) right from the beginning embraces them for all their messy, bloody faults. The MAIN THING I LIKE about "dark romance" is the realization that "this person is fucked up... i still like them/i like them anyway, i am deciding to be with them despite (or because of) this fucked up part of themselves". There's a thread of fucking CONSENT in there, somewhere. This was not the case for Dark Magic.

This was a rape fantasy, plain and simple.

In this book, not only does the heroine NOT GET A FUCKING SAY AT ALL WITH WHOM SHE ENDS UP WITH OR ANY DECISION AT ALL RELATED TO HER OR HER PERSON- but she also ends up with a "hero" who is just a sexist, asshole that goes raping virgins cause "it's not me, it's the beast". His vampiric side is used as a crutch, an excuse, for the shitty way he acts. He doesn't own up to any of his bad behavior or terrible actions, he puts all the blame on the HEROINE, the VICTIM in all this, and focuses all of it ON HER. He whines and bitches about how horrible he is and how he can't "help himself", which is just... the opposite of what I like about dark heroes. It's making them sympathetic and pitiable... when they shouldn't be???

"You make me crazy, you make me feel like this, without you I'd be a MONSTER."

He whines and plays the victim, which on its own is annoying and unattractive, but he also does all this while he tries to guilt-trip the heroine into staying with him or flat out forcing her against her will. The red flags and early warning signs of abuse is so prevalent in this book it's mind-boggling why this isn't used as a textbook example of guilting victims into staying with abusive spouses and even trying to make the ABUSER seem like the unfortunate one. "He can't help but smack you around when all you do is nag at him, Joanne, why can't you be more agreeable!! He works SO HARD for you to have nice things! Think of the poor guy suffering!!" Barf.

description

To put it simply, i hated him. If I wanted a misogynistic love story about a guy, stalking, forcing and guilt-tripping a woman into being with him and dubious consent on the heroine's part... i'd watch the news.

Oh and did i forget to mention that the hero knew about her birth and was essentially waiting for her to "come of age" EEEWWWWWW

But at the end of the day, this review is about 15 years too late to actually matter so i'll just sit in this corner and wonder what in the fuck people were thinking 15 years ago.

Okay, I'm addicted to this world despite all the repetition in the writing and overuse of phrases. I think part of it is the actually interesting world-building that's going on. A lot of paranormal romance doesn't bother much with that. It's ALL about the romance/sex and the surrounding myths and supporting rules of the world are skimmed over. This is heavily skewed toward the romance, but there is also world building as well.

Obviously I'm a fan of romance, but I'm also a big horror novel fan and know Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural canon to a frankly disturbing extent. So, this appeals to me on several levels.

This one was, so far, the darkest of the novels when it comes to the H/h's relationship. While all Carpathian males are controlling and overbearing, Gregori takes the prize.

As I've mentioned in previous reviews, you have to be able to go in with the mindset that this is a different species with a different set of rules when it comes to relationships. These guys really do need their "life mate" to save them.

Once a male Carpathian turns 200 he loses the ability to feel emotion and even to see color if he hasn't already found his life mate. There are much fewer females than males in this race, so a lot of the men get stuck with no life mate or have to wait centuries for one.

Their law forbids them to kill a human in the process of feeding. They don't take enough blood to kill and they also mesmerize their "dinner" so that he/she has no memory of the event and is not afraid while being bitten.

However, if the Carpathian allows himself to feed off a human who hasn't been mesmerized to feel no fear and then kills that human, they get a high off the adrenaline filled blood and the power of killing. This is a big lure for those older Carpathians without a life mate, because it provides a temporary fix of feeling (kinda like what I've read about serial killers). Once they start down that path they lose their soul and become a true vampire and are under the sentence of death by Carpathian law.

Gregori is ~ 1000 years old and has no life mate. It's been a long time since he's felt anything.

The daughter of the Capathian prince happens to be his life mate (they only have one) but he is not allowed to "marry" her until she's 18. However, she refuses him and asks for time. She wants to go out on her own and have a life and Gregori scares her, even though she feels the pull of their life mate chemistry.

Trigger warning for rape

Oh, this one was outstanding! I'd been anxious for Gregori's story, and it didn't disappoint. He's the ultimate "bad boy" and, though it isn't very P.C. of me, I loved the depth of Gregori's love for his lifemate, his passion, his extreme protectiveness and even his jealousy! The unexpected touches of humor and the humans you will come to know are just icing on this delicious cake. Now, I'm looking ahead to Julian...

If you've read any of this woman's supernatural romance, then you know how this book reads. I lost count how many times she used the word velvet. I'm really not a romance reader, so by the end of the book I was skipping the sex scenes skimming the repetitive bits about how perfect they were for each other, yadda yadda yadda, and was trying to finish reading the bits with some actual plot in it.

I think what really bothered me were the inacuracies about NOLA. I've never lived there myself, but I've visited enough times that all my trips are starting to blur together and I can't recall just how many times I've been to that city.

1) When sitting in Cafe du Monde, there is no possible way that the riverbank could be "calling" to anyone. I doubt most people know that the river is so close. Plus there is not riverbank, but a boardwalk full of gutterpunks and homeless during the night.

2) I don't recall there being many trees along the boardwalk, and I guaranty that there aren't any fraking snakes sleeping in them.

3) From the swamp tour I took a few months ago I learned that, yes people used to stuff their furniture and mattresses with the moss that grows on the trees. However that was about a hundred years ago and they stopped doing it because they never could get all the bugs out and their beds would always be full of biting insects. I really doubt the fellow in the book is that old.

4) And further more, there isn't a single cemetery in the Quarter. You see the first settlers figured out real quick that they couldn't bury their dead under ground, so they put all their cemeteries well away from where they lived. The closest cemetery to the Quarter would be in the Garden district where the newer, more naive, settlers from New England moved. They didn't have a clue, until it was too late, how much it would stink to have decomposing corpses above ground in their neighborhood. Thus the planted a lot of gardens to cover the smell as best they could. In any case the Garden District is a few miles away from the French Quarter, and not a fast walk for anyone much less a skeleton.

I read this book when it was 1st released. This was the book that stopped me from reading CF for years because I hated the H. I thought he was a jackass. He basically . I thought he was cold to the h.

Years later I re read & liked it more. Lol I liked the H but the h annoyed me. On the 2nd read I understood & emphasized with the H about the above spoiler. He literally was losing his soul & had no idea what was happening. He was remorseful. At times I wish he was warmer in certain scenes.

I thought the h was TSTL. She wanted to hunt the vampire w/ the H when she has no experience. Also I'm not a fan of spitfire h's who try to act tough when they are clueless.

Not a favorite by CF but it was decent. The writing felt jerky at times. The flow was off.

Definitely the best out of the series so far! It's hard not to love Gregori ❤
I love how all the books connect too, even though each book is a specific characters story 😊
I love that something small in this book, only a few lines, leads you into the next book!
Christine Feehan is a fabulous writer!!

Summary
Savannah Dubrinsky, is the daughter of Raven and Mikhail, the prince of the Carpathian people. When she learns that Gregori, the infamous “Dark One” is her intented lifemate, known as the boogie man of their people, the most respected and feared of their kind, she knows at eighteen years old she is not ready to tie herself to such a creature. So she pleads for time, five years in the states. Gregori has lived for centuries, one of the oldest of their kind, he knows he will not be a easy mate, so he gives her that time, despite the fact that he isn’t sure he can wait five years for her. Savannah has now had her precious five years, and while on her last stop on her tour in San Francisco, her closest friend is killed by a vampire, and Gregori saves her. She knows that this day would come, but she also knew she would never be ready to be his lifemate. She is overcome with grief over her closest friend, and being tied to a dark and dangerous man, but they decide to head to New Orleans, for the jazz music festival, and soon they will be facing hunters from the human society out to destroy their kind, and a master vampire and only working together will they be able to survive.

The Hero
Gregori “The Dark One” is the healer of his people, and second in command to the prince, who also happens to be his best friend. Gregori has defended his people and protected them and killed vampires left and right. He has studied and learned everything he can to be the most knowledgable and cunning. He has few friends, many enemies, and has searched for his lifemate for centuries. When Mikhail and Raven conceived a girl, he knew she was his lifemate, and he must stay strong for her. She is his only hope. Gregori can be a hard hero to like. He is very rough around the edges, believes women should be protected in a cacoon and away from any and all danger. He is very “alpha male” and he is possessive. But Gregori is also very easy to connect with. As soon as you see the real Gregori, who has lived a life of killing and darkness, we see a man that only wants to be loved and needed.

The Heroine
Savannah Dubrinsky, she is the daughter of the prince. She has her own special gifts and abilities. She is powerful in her own right despite being a fledging. She grew up with only her parents, and a wolf as her companion. She now resides in the states, doing magic shows and is infamous for it. But Savannah has one fear, her lifemate. She knows that she will have to be binded forever with Gregori, but she fears him more than any other. She knows he will be hard to live with, and she is very independent like her mother. I really liked Savannah, but at times she could have used a bit spine, especially in the beginning. I understand why she feels the way she does, but at times she could be a bit selfish. But what I really liked about her character, was how she stands up to Gregori, and doesn’t back down.

Plot and Story Line
This is a re read or “re listen” for me. Every now and then I get in the mood to listen to the earlier books in the carpathian series, since I own them all on audiobook. I realized I had yet to review Dark Magic. So I decided now would be a good time to do so. The first half of the book isn’t always easy to listen to. We see the relationship between Gregori and Savannah have a bit of a rocky start. One of the reasons for this, is that Gregori has waited to long to claim Savannah, and if he doesn’t he will become a vampire. And no one will be able to destroy him. We see how his control is slipping away, and Savannah at first doesn’t realize how bad it truly is. They have a bit of a unsteady beginning with plenty of miscommunication and mistrusts, but then we see a turning point in their relationship. A turning point that makes Gregori despise himself, and Savannah reads his mind and memories, and learns who he really is, and a trust begins to form. We also get a side character that I hope one day gets his own story (Gary). We see him in future books too, which is fun and you see a hint of a story that could happen. There is some quick witted humor that is delightful, and the narrator is amazing. She has done most of the books from book 1 to book 10 I believe apart from Rebecca Cook who has done a couple. But I adore her inflections and I fell in love with her in Dark Challenge, so its always a delight to listen to her again. What I also liked was seeing their relationship develop more and you see a hint of playfulness enter the relationship, and Gregori softens towards Savannah, We see the romance between them really blossom especially once they get to New Orleans. There is some suspense elements as well from two different factors. Now this is a story that will either be you love it or you hate it, I love it because of seeing Gregori in previous books, and even though this isn’t my favorite book of the series, I always have fun with it. But I will warn you in the first part of the story, it is not easy to read, there are some darker elements, but the later half is more playful and light and fun.

The Cover
This isn’t my favorite cover for the series. I do like the foggy background, but there is something non realistic about this cover, but I love the colors and the wolves at the bottom.

Overall View
Dark Magic is a highly sensual and dark romance at times, but has witty humor, intrigue and danger, a story of redeeming love and passion.
