She debuted in 1987 with Natsufuku no Erii (Jap: 夏服のエリー) on the manga anthology Bessatsu Hana to Yume published by Hakusensha. She is best known for her gothic manga works, such as the Earl Cain series (Jap: 伯爵カイン, Hakushaku Cain) and Angel Sanctuary (Jap: 天使禁猟区, Tenshi Kinryōku)
Her work is typically serialized in one of Hakusensha's two shōjo manga anthologies, Bessatsu Hana to Yume and Hana to Yume. In 2010, Kaori Yuki was one of many manga artists whose work would appear in the new shōjo manga anthology Aria by the publisher Kodansha on July 28, 2010. Her doujinshi-ka name is MoonClock.
It has been a long time since I last visited Yuki-sama first manga! This collection of short stories still do not disappoint!
Certainly, this volume is not at the same level as Count Cain and Angel Sanctuary, but it is still an interesting read.
(1) Lovery artwork and gothic melodrama! If it is your thing please try!
(2) A forest of hanging corpses of young girls, hahaha.
(3) I like the countress who acted like a witch out of jealousy. LOL
(4) The last story is surprisingly good.
(5) I like the story 'Magician at the Backstage', it's not the best story out there but I like the Phantom of the Opera undertone and all the black magic melodrama. LOL
The artwork is nice and I quite liked the first story but overall, all of the fairytales feel a bit rushed, there's far too much spoken exposition and the stories don't really have the chance to "breathe" and develop naturally.
Since I’ve re-read Kaori Yuki‘s Ludwig Revolution series this year and finally got around to read the sequel, Ludwig Fantasy, I decided to re-read her other fairytale inspired Manga, Cruel Fairytales.
This is a collection of four short stories, published earlier in her career and before her big breakout with Angel Sanctuary.
The artwork is beautifully, but it definitely shows it’s an early work of hers. It is less polished and characters look less distinguished than later on.
I bought this Manga somewhere between collecting Ludwig Revolution, so it’s been at least a decade since I‘ve first read it and I admit, I didn’t remember a single thing about it. Now, that never seems like a good thing. I went into this not expecting much, because obviously it didn’t leave much of an impression the first time, but you know how things go, tastes change over the years.
The first story, titular Cruel Fairytales, easily the best of the volume. It is dark, creepy, atmospheric and feels like a real fairytale. Had it just been for this story, I would have enjoyed it more.
It’s the other stories that really bring it down for me, especially the lackluster last one. While they all have some form of supernatural or at least obscure elements, the fairytale aspect seems to be missing. The characters are not that engaging and the stories quite generic, which is really unusual for Yuki (though again, it’s an early work). I pretty remembered why I forgot about this. It starts well and then it quickly falls flat. It is an okay read, but unfortunately far from remarkable.
I love Kaori Yuki’s work, but jeez, this was horrible. There was so much potential and I was just left feeling extremely disappointed. The first story was the only decent one. The ending was a bit confusing and convoluted. However, that reveal was disturbing as hell. It seemed like she just went all out with that plotline. I was sitting there like, ‘oh my god they really went there’. From the mother’s background to the secrets the dollhouse was hiding, I was so into it.
I probably would have enjoyed this more if the rest of the manga had lived up that creep factor. The remaining stories were what dragged the compilation down. The different chapters didn’t seem to fit with the theme that the book had opened with. It was seriously like having a bunch of puzzle pieces to different puzzles. It was honestly really random. They were all so rushed and boring that I completely lost interest half way through.
